This Retro Flip Clock Looks Like an Old TV Set

These days, lots of people are replacing their bedside clocks with smartphones or other mobile gadgets which keep time. But there’s something about being able to just open an eyeball in the middle of the night and glance at the time that makes me still prefer a standalone clock. I always loved those mechanical flip clocks from the 1970s too, so this looks like a fun option.

Midclock’s TV clock combines two different old school devices in one: a retro flip clock, and a retro television set. Unlike the flip clocks of yore, Midclock says theirs operates silently, so it won’t wake you up ticking away. Plus it’s got a built-in night light which makes reading the time easier, and adds a gentle glow.

It runs on two AA batteries, so you can take it with you when traveling too. The only bummer about this clock is that it doesn’t have an alarm built in, so that’s a bit of a fail. Still, it’s a cool design for fans of retro tech, and you can grab one over at Amazon today.

Go Back to the Arcade with the Pong-inspired OriginX Cabinet

Back in the day, most of the games in arcades were stand-up cabinets, but a few were sit down table style games. I don’t remember ever seeing wall mounted arcade games back in the day, but there are a handful of them available these days. Industrial designer Love Hulten is showing off a slick wall-mounted arcade machine that looks like it was transported from the early days of video games.

The OriginX looks like it came straight out of the arcade days because it’s an obvious homage to the original Pong cabinet from 1972. Inside the cabinet is a modern computer that has all the old games you might want to play, thanks to MAME. It can be customized to run the original JAMMA board of your choice though if you prefer to run with original hardware.

It has a 19-inch 4:3 LCD and a custom barrel distortion filter to mimic CRT monitors from the arcades of yore. The cabinet can be customized to your color desires and only 50 units will be made.  This thing is far from cheap, selling in Europe for €2,899 or about $3,400 (USD). There is no word on availability outside of Europe, but hopefully you’ll be able to buy one of these stateside if you’ve got deep enough pockets.

Retro TV Smartphone Magnifier: iBoobTube

Transform your smartphone into an old school television set with this whimsical gadget from Firebox. The Smartphone Magnifier holds your phone inside of a faux wood television cabinet, and makes it look like your grandparent’s old boob tube.

It magnifier is designed specifically to distort the image on its 8″ screen. You’ll just need to find an app that can superimpose scan lines on your videos to complete the retro effect. I love how the smartphone holder looks like an old VHS tape.

The only downside to this thing is that it appears to be constructed from cardboard. For $26, I was hoping it might be made from something more durable. Maybe someone on Etsy or Instructables will make a version from wood and plastic.

The Banana Stereo Record Player is Bananas

Only in the 1970s could you find such a fruity stereo. Wait. Bananas are a fruit right? Or are they an herb? I have no idea now. I just know that this stereo is bananas.

This portable record player is shaped like a banana and what is even more bananas is that it could be played in any position. Even upside down. And look at the pic. Look how portable and easy to carry this thing was. That was some serious technological innovation.

It was apparently inspired by Andy Warhol’s banana painting that served as an album cover for the rock band Velvet Underground. Crazy. Sadly, this vintage record player was recently sold on Etsy, so you can’t have it.

Yes, This Is an HDTV

If there’s one thing that today’s flat-screen TVs have led to is a lack of the sort of unique designs that CRTs used to offer. I suppose this is a good thing, as HDTVs are designed to focus our attention on the image itself. That said, if you’re looking for a TV that looks different than all the others, check out this retro-style set from Seiki.

The bright red Seiki Digital SE22FR01 set is a full 1080p, 22-inch display, but it looks like an old TV from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The set offers all the modern conveniences, including inputs for HDMI, component, composite and VGA devices, and a remote control. And since the display has a chubby case, it’s got room inside for a better speaker than typical small HDTVs, with a built in 20-watt Yamaha subwoofer. Naturally, it’s got an old-school power switch and a volume dial.

You can get your hands on the Seiki retro-style HDTV from Amazon for $199.98(USD).

First Clip from Ashton Kutcher’s Steve Jobs Movie Plants Some Apple Seeds

When Steve Jobs passed away, two movie projects were announced not long after his untimely death. One of the films is a big-budget production from Sony with Aaron Sorkin writing the screenplay. The other is a low-budget independent production with Ashton Kutcher playing the visionary founder of Apple, simply entitled jOBS.

I thought Kutcher was a bad choice the first time I heard about the film, but after seeing him in character, I’ve changed my mind. Kutcher and a young Steve Jobs are eerily similar in looks. We learned not too long ago that the movie would be debuting on the closing night of the Sundance Film Festival this week. We also learned that the official launch date for the movie would coincide with the 37th anniversary of Apple this April 19.

The movie is set in the 1970s, and some scenes were filmed in the actual garage where Apple Computer was founded. The first clip from the movie has now hit the Internet, featuring Kutcher as Jobs in a conversation with uber-geek Steve Wozniak (played by Josh Gad) about the Woz’s new project “Operating System.”

Check out the clip below to help you decide if you want to pay good money to see the film when it hits theaters this spring.

Men’s Fish Tank Platform Shoes: Pimp My Heels

People are coming up with all sorts of weird shoes lately, but these men’s platform shoes with aquariums in the heels might actually be the most wacky of them all. Clearly inspired by I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, they’re definitely not something you’ll be wearing to work, unless the street is your office, that is.

The style itself looks like it came straight from the seventies with the wide heels and the laces. And while they look sort-of cool (again, in a bizarre way), I’m pretty sure only a handful of guys can actually wear these shoes and manage not to look like a fool.

They’d be great for disco-themed costume parties and pimp-cosplay, though.

They’re available over on Amazon for $44 to $88(USD) a pair, depending on the pattern and size. Not recommended for actual fish.

Complete Copy of Atari 2600 Air Raid for Sale: Duck and Cover Your Wallet

If a vintage video game is rare enough, it can sell for huge money. Back in 2010, a copy of the Atari 2600 game Air Raid sold for $31,600. The reason is because it was the only known copy with a box. Now another copy of Air Raid has shown up with both the box and instruction manual. That makes this the only known complete copy in existence. As of now it is up to nearly $18,000 on an online auction.

air raid

This complete copy of Air Raid was discovered by a family in Southern California. Their father was given the game by a sales rep for the company Men-A-Vision while he tended to a game retail space in a local drug store.

After the store closed he was given the video game stock and the Atari display kiosk, where these games have been stored for about thirty years.

They read about the selling price of the first one and of course liked what they heard. I wonder how high it will go before the auction ends on November 4th.

CB Handset on ThinkGeek: 10-4 LULZ

Remember the CB radio handset for mobile phones? The first time we saw them it seemed as if they were only available in Japan. Well, bring out your trucker hats, because ThinkGeek just got some in stock.

cb radio phone handset

The handset plugs into the 3.5mm jack of mobile phones and has a built-in mic on the cord, along with a on/off and volume dial and a mute button. You can also use it as a speaker, but why do that when you can use it to pretend you’re a detective or a member of the Resistance?

ThinkGeek is the M20, bring $20 (USD). Over and out. 10-11. 12-13. Copy-paste.

Rare Fisheye Nikkor Lens for Sale… Just $160,000

SLR camera lenses can be pretty expensive, but this has got to be some sort of a record. A rare fisheye Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 lens, which is supposed to offer the world’s most extreme wide-angle, has gone on sale at Gray’s of Westminster in London, UK for the low, low price of $160,000 (USD), give or take a few dollars after currency conversion.

nikon nikkor fisheye 1970 lens

The lens was first introduced in 1970 and offers an angle of view of 220º, making it quite wide indeed. Production was started in March of 1972 and it was only available on special order. It was located overseas and it took Tony Hurst and Gray Levett over six months to find one. The lens is in mint condition and uses 12 glass elements in nine groups, and weighs in at a staggering 11.46 pounds! Its minimum focusing distance is 25cm.

You’ll have to spend at least £100,000 (~$160,000 USD) to buy this lens. At least it comes with with a lens cap as well as rugged carrying case for that price.
