I always find myself in the eternal struggle between fluffing my couch pillows and artfully arranging them for aesthetic value versus placing them to fill the gaps in my spine. I totally love arranging my pillows or changing covers to give a new feel, but I wish my couch had an ‘auto straighten’ functionality. While they invent a smart sofa, the designers at Bogdanova Bureau have a simple solution that is easy to implement without becoming an eyesore.

The Bandage Sofa is quite self-explanatory in its approach. The sofa uses a bandage in either the same color or a contrasting hue to hold your cushions in place – whether you choose to arrange for comfort or style! When members of the Bogdanova Bureau team started to design this sofa, they first thought about comfort. The first thing you imagine when you think about the couch is a dozen uncomfortable pillows, moving from side to side and making your rest miserable. With Bandage Sofa, your cushions stay just the way you want them to! The clean lines, muted yet modern tones, and sleek design makes it a perfect match for every interior setting.

In today’s world of pretty-looking homes popping up from different Instagram Users, this couch is the easy way to keep your living room sorted. So whenever the opportunity strikes, this couch is one less thing you need to clean up before taking that natural light shot!

This no-screws Dougong Table assembles like Lego and looks like art

Alright, who is ready for a table that looks like art and does not come with a frustrating IKEA assembly guide? Because Boston-based designer Mian Wei has created this beautiful piece of furniture that marries minimal aesthetic with cultural heritage. The Dougong blocks from ancient Chinese architecture play a central role in the build and concept of the grid table – think of it as an advanced Lego challenge! Mian Wei won the Silver A’Design Award for this grid table in the homeware and furniture category, showcasing his exceptional skills as a multimedia artist who brings to life ideas that blend industrial design and emotions seamlessly.

This is a no screws assembly – yes – there is no need to keep a track of the different screw sizes and the tiny anvil! The grid table relies on the ages-old Dougong method of interlocking blocks so effectively that it not only distributes weight evenly but also lays a strong foundation while experiencing history. The supporting structure (Dougong) is made of modular parts that can be easily disassembled and reassembled in need of storage and moving. The bracket connectors (Gong) slide easily into the beams (Dou) to form the weight-bearing structure and retain structural integrity when the table is being lifted. It is made of ash, maple, and plywood which brings tone and texture ‘to the table’ (I just had to take that opportunity!).

“This project, on the one hand, tries to go back to the root to reinvestigate the practicality and scalability and bring new life to the ancient tradition. On the other hand, the project seeks to explore new aesthetic possibilities of the structure with modern forms and production techniques” says Mian Wei. The grid table gives form to the visual of wisdom and can be a stand-alone accent piece in the room (while also holding your tea and books!) without being too bold. The table is minimal yet so intricate in what can only be described as ‘engineered art’. As the owner builds the table, the complexity fades away, and the sensible nature reveals itself – the complete opposite of what I have ever felt while assembling the simplest chest of drawers in my home.

A’ Design Awards & Competition 2013 – Last Call for Entries

Hope you are settled into the week and enjoying Valentine’s Day! Here’s just another friendly reminder that the 2013 A’ Design Awards & Competition will be closing their submissions on February 28, 2013. Make most of this upcoming weekend and submit your projects to any of these categories: Product Design, Transportation Design, Lighting, Digital Devices, Packaging Design Category; the complete list of categories is here.

Amongst the various benefits of participating in the A’ Design Awards, the key ones that come to my mind are the exclusive exhibition, entry in the yearbook, comprehensive PR and Publicity, world design rankings inclusion and the gala-night for networking!

Timelines:

  • Deadline for submission is February 28, 2013.
  • Winners will get early communication on March 7, 2013.
  • Results will be announced to public on April 15, 2013 when the award winners’ exhibition starts.
  • Results will be posted on Yanko Design on April 15, 2013.

A’ Design Awards Exhibition Details:

A’ Design Award Winners’ Exhibition at MOOD will be held at Como, Italy. Dates: 15-27 Apr 2013.

  • 751 m2 Space is provided for winners to exhibit their works. Winners who cannot join by physical works will be provided free poster printing and preparation service, therefore every designers’ works get exhibited.

A’ Winners’ Exhibition at About Design will be held at Gdansk, Poland. Dates: 10-12 May 2013.

  • 112 m2 Space is provided for winners to exhibit their works. A’ Design Award will carry small pieces, and provide poster preparation and printing free of charge to all winners.
