HTC One VX review: AT&T’s latest mid-range smartphone is worth a closer look

HTC One VX review AT&T's latest midrange smartphone is worth a closer look

A basic grade school education teaches us that two is better than one, but it doesn't always work the same way when you add letters to phone names. In the case of HTC, the mid-range One VX is more of an average: it seems to take various aspects of the One X, One S and One V and jumbles them together into a $50 AT&T device (on contract). But does that mean this 4.5-inch qHD smartphone and its middle-of-the-road components offer an average experience? Not necessarily. Stay tuned below as we learn if the whole phone is greater than the sum of its parts.

DNP BLU Products unlocked Vivo 465 HD available in January for $300

Arguably the straight to DVD release of the smartphone world, BLU Product's Vivo 4.3 is getting a second act in the form of the Vivo 4.65 HD. Aside from the 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display it's named after, this up-and-comer ships with Android 4.0, a 1.2GHz A9 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. If you can get past less than stellar specs -- and resist waiting for the Nexus 4 to be back in stock -- BLU's future flagship can be yours outright for $300 sometime in January.

HTC One SV coming to UK with LTE, 4.3-inch Super LCD 2 display, Snapdragon S4 and microSD slot

HTC One SV coming to UK with LTE, Snapdragon S4, microSD slot

Another addition to HTC's familia One, a new 4.3-inch Android phone will pay a visit to the UK (with LTE) in the next few weeks. The One SV, which is already set to arrive in Asia and Australia, has a decent list of specifications, with Beats Audio, burst photography and dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor in attendance. It'll be running Android 4.0, with a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.0 lens able to record up to 1080p video -- it's certainly no Droid DNA for the old continent. A pleasant surprise, however, is the addition of a microSD card slot, which can expand internal storage up to 32GB, while NFC is built into this particular S, something that wasn't in the original One S. It's a completely different looking slab compared to the MAO-treated original, while a Super LCD 2 screen (WVGA, 480 x 800) now supplanting what was once AMOLED. The One SV will be landing in blue and white editions in the coming weeks and although no carriers have been specified yet, the mention of LTE suggests that EE is likely to offer the device.

Update: BestBoyz in Germany has already got to grips with HTC's newest, noting a replaceable 1,800mAh battery. There's a collection of hands-on photos over at the more coverage link.

Samsung’s SCH-W2013 is a quad-core, dual-screen flip phone, designed for Jackie Chan

Samsung's quadcore, dualscreen flip phone SCHW2013 designed for Jackie Chan

It's been almost a year since the ridiculously expensive SCH-W999 launched on China Telecom, so it's about time for Samsung to come up with yet another dual-screen flip phone to lure folks with too much money. Launched in conjunction with a big charity concert (again) earlier today is the SCH-W2013, a 1.4GHz quad-core (likely an Exynos 4412) device with Android 4.0 and dual-3.7-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED touchscreens. On top of that there's 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD expansion of up to 64GB, 1,850mAh of battery juice, an eight-megapixel main imager plus a whopping 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera. As with many flagship devices on China Telecom, the W2013 comes with dual-SIM support: one for CDMA2000 800/1900 and the other for GSM 900/1800/1900. The damage? Well, there's nothing official yet, but it's believed to be somewhere between ¥18,000 ($2,900) and ¥20,000 ($3,210). After all, it ain't cheap to hire Jackie Chan (and he was also given a W2013 at the concert).

Oppo’s Ulike 2 boasts 5MP front camera, clearly made for self-portrait addicts like you

Image

Hold up! Oppo's not quite done with teasing just yet for the day. The company's Sina Weibo account has quietly announced the Ulike 2, a white 4.5-inch phone designed with ladies in mind: not only does it have a common eight-megapixel main camera on the back, but there's also a staggering five-megapixel front-facing imager with beautification features (like face slimming, skin whitening, skin smoothing and more) to keep the self-portrait addicts busy. Other specs include a gapless 960 x 540 LCD (with 2.2mm-thick bezel), 1GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, micro-SIM slot, a 2,020mAh battery, and TD-SCDMA radio for China Mobile's network. There's no telling how much this Android 4.0 phone will hurt your wallet, nor is there any official information on the underlying processor, but we shall find out when it hits the Chinese market on December 19th, if not at the Find 5's launch event on the 12th.

Motorola’s RAZR i MT788 announced with 2GHz Intel chip, heading to China Mobile next month

Motorola

Motorola created quite some buzz with its first "Intel inside" Android phone, the RAZR i, back in September, so it's only natural to see the company tapping into the Chinese market with a localized variant. Dubbed the RAZR i MT788, this China Mobile device bears much similarity to its Western sibling on paper: 2GHz Intel Atom Z2480, 4.3-inch 960 x 540 AMOLED display (with Gorilla Glass), eight-megapixel camera, microSD expansion (up to 32GB) and Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The difference? Well, the chassis is the most obvious one: instead of using the same design as the original RAZR i, the new MT788 looks identical to the MSM8625-powered dual-SIM XT788 on China Telecom. On top of that, the battery is rated at just 1,735mAh instead of the RAZR i's 2,000mAh, and there's just 4GB of built-in memory instead 16GB; but the front-facing camera's bumped up from 0.3 megapixels to 1.3. There's no price just yet, but interested buyers can pick one up in China starting in mid-December. Will the world's largest carrier help Intel take a significant bite out of the mobile phone market? Only time will tell.

Hisense jumps into 4K TVs with the XT880, promises Android 4.0 and a sane size

Hisense jumps into 4K TVs with the XT880, promises Android 40 and a sane TV size

The current crop of 4K TVs from LG and Sony are large enough that some of us would need to knock out a wall to get them inside. Enter a surprise early challenger from Hisense: its upcoming XT880 line's 50-, 58- and 65-inch sizes deliver that 3,840 x 2,160 picture at dimensions built for mere mortal living rooms. We're also promised a full-fledged, 3D-capable smart TV based around Android 4.0 with WiFi internet access, a remote with voice commands and a removable camera for gesture control or Skype chats. Hisense yet hasn't committed to launch details for the XT880 line besides a presence on the CES show floor; however, it's safe to say that the smaller sizes will bring the price of Ultra HD down from the stratosphere.

Matrix One gets delayed at customs, manufacturer suspends new orders of $90 tablet

Matrix One gets delayed at customs, manufacturer suspends new orders of $90 tablet

In early August, we reported that the Matrix One $90 tablet was finally available for sale, but it now seems that the celebration was a bit pre-mature. Anyone who might've ordered the bargain bin slate must now wait for the company to move through a mess of red tape, as Matrix One has revealed that all of its shipments have been delayed at customs. While the company hasn't given any specific reason for the holdup, it's since suspended the ordering process as it waits for the current shipments to clear. For its part, Matrix One states that it's diligently working toward a resolution and promises to provide further updates as they become available. If you're concerned about your order, feel free to hit up the company directly. You'll find everything you need in Matrix One's full statement after the break.

[Thanks, Michael]
