ASUS ROG Phone 8 design takes a very different direction

Almost every smartphone these days can play games, especially the expensive high-end ones, but there are a few that definitely take the cake. They’re labeled gaming phones not just because of some special feature, such as a tiny fan spinning inside, but also because of the gamer aesthetics that they embrace. For years now, the ASUS ROG Phone has held the crown of having the most gamer-friendly design, but it seems that it’s finally willing to let that title go next year. Based on its own teasers, the next Republic of Gamers smartphone might be embracing a more mainstream design in exchange for what might finally be more capable cameras as well.

To be fair, there is no guidebook on how to apply a gamer aesthetic to products, but you can bet it will have plenty of RGB lighting and lines going in multiple directions that suggest the presence of machine panels. Indeed, the previous ROG Phones have employed those design elements, sometimes even going as far as using small LED screens for more dynamic accents. Of course, none of these are essential to the actual gaming experience, but they do add a nice touch that marks the product as something truly designed with gamers in mind.

Given its history, it’s a bit surprising that the ASUS ROG Phone 8 might do away with those design elements almost entirely. Although nothing’s set in stone yet, the brand’s official teaser suggests that it might be adopting a more minimalist and subdued design, one that eschews the lines and RGB colors. What we see instead is a clean dual-tone composition that, given the gray colors, looks more industrial than futuristic. There could still be some lighting underneath the ROG logo, but could very well be the only place it shows up.

Perhaps more curious is the camera bump design, a thick pentagon laid on top of a square. For generations, the ROG Phones have carried mediocre cameras, so a switch to a triple camera system could be big news for fans of the brand. It’s not a clear win yet, of course, but it’s commendable that ASUS is willing to shake things up to improve its performance.

To its credit, the ROG Phones have slowly been moving towards more conventional and less spectacular designs, but the ROG Phone 8 could have the most drastic changes if the teasers are to be taken at face value. On the one hand, it does help make the ROG Phones more acceptable in “regular” scenarios and won’t stand out as much. On the other hand, if you want a more conventional-looking smartphone that can handle mobile games, there are already plenty of those in the market, making the ROG Phone 8 redundant.

ASUS ZenBeam L2 projector is a must-have for a fun movie festival in your backyard

Before, mobile projectors were not of the highest quality so it’s not a device that you would want to use for home movie nights. They were good enough for some presentations if you need something that can be portable and easily accessible. But in terms of video and projection quality, it left a lot to be desired. But lately, LED projector makers have been upping the ante, courting the market that would rather use projectors to watch movies and TV shows rather than using a smart TV or laptop.

Designer: ASUS

ASUS in particular has come up with pretty decent portable projectors with its ZenBeam line. The latest one is the ZenBeam 1080p LED projector which you can use for your TV show marathon sessions or a drive-in movie festival in your background. It can even serve as your own gallery of sorts with a Light Wall feature that lets you project images onto your wall to fit the ambience of your home or of the moment and you can of course change the “painting” as often as you want.

The projector has 400 ANSI lumens which is perfect for night time viewing outdoors. It has a mercury-free RGBB LED light source with a Full HD resolution with a 1:2:1 ratio and can project visuals between 40 and 120 diagonal inches. It comes with Android TV so you can download any app or video streaming service that is compatible with the platform. Sound quality should also be pretty okay since it uses Harman Kardon sound.

The ZenBeam L2 projector looks like it can roam around the moon as the design seems to be that of a small robot or rover. It has a 3.5 hour battery life so it should be enough for a movie or a couple of episodes before you would need to plug it in. I wouldn’t mind having one that I can pull out if I need to project something on a surface. I mean I would still prefer my TV or my tablet but for group viewing somewhere that doesn’t have that, then this would be the next best thing.

ASUS ROG Phone 7 carries a simpler design that belies its power

Gaming smartphones are a bit of an oddity in the mobile market. While all high-end phones are technically capable of running mobile games, these devices pull out all the stops to squeeze out everything they can from the hardware. Most of them also carry designs that are a bit over the top in order to appeal to gamers’ aesthetics and their love for glowing RGB lights. That, however, might have just been the youthful phase of this niche market. After six yearly iterations, it seems that ASUS’ Republic of Gamers brand, or ROG, has started to dial down its designs, pushing forward a ROG Phone 7 Series that hides over-the-top features behind a more moderate appearance.

Designer: ASUS

The ASUS ROG Phone 7 definitely has all the makings of a top-of-the-line gaming phone, starting with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, a large 6.78-inch FHD+ screen, and an extra generous 6,000mAh battery. Like other ROG phones before it, it has gaming-specific features as well, such as touch-sensitive AirTriggers on the phone’s frame as well as a second charging port so that you can keep the phone plugged in comfortably while gaming.

All that power will naturally generate a lot of heat, and this is one area that gaming phones tend to go to extremes to address. In the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate’s case, the extra cooling help comes from the new AeroActive Cooler 7 that latches onto the back of the phone. This accessory introduces a thermoelectric Peltier system to really drag down the temperatures when necessary. This external fan works in tandem with the ROG Phone 7’s AeroActive Portal, which is basically a set of air inlets that direct the cooler’s air onto the phone’s vapor chamber.

Amusingly, that same AeroActive Cooler 7 accessory also brings a feature that’s unheard of on smartphones. The attachment houses a five-magnet super-linear subwoofer that complements the phone’s built-in stereo speakers, though that requires the cooler to be attached. Whether that makes a significant difference, especially when playing out in the open, remains to be heard.

Unlike its predecessors, the design of the ROG Phone 7, both the regular and the Ultimate models, are more low-key. The Ultimate still has that strip of LCD that lets you display symbols and icons as you wish, but the distinct lines that divide the back into separate areas are now gone. The non-Ultimate models have a distinct dual-tone color scheme, with the upper half of the phone using a translucent material. Compared to previous ROG Phones, this year’s generation looks a bit more minimalist, perhaps suggesting that the gaming smartphone market is finally coming of age.

Special Edition Asus tablet designed by ACRONYM is functional and striking work of art

Asus likes to experiment with unique collaborations with creative outfits, and more often than not, the results are excellent. Back in 2020, they joined forces with Berlin-based ACRONYM to create the ROG ZEPHYRUS G14-ACRNM laptop and now the two camps have again collaborated for a limited-edition tablet.

ACRONYM co-founded in 1994 by Errolson Hugh, a pioneer in the technical-apparel industry, has struck partnerships with the likes of Nike in the past, and now they developed the functional and stylish ROG Flow Z13 ACRNM RMT02 tablet for Asus.

Designer: ACRONYM and Asus

The gaming tablet’s industrial chassis is very artistic, which is obvious since Hugh leveraged the design prowess of Phil Saunders who designed the Iron Man suit. Ideation for this cool-looking machine propped up to go with the existing line-up of ACRONYM jackets, and project head, Rod Chong (LA-based creative director) delivered exactly what was needed. Both camps worked for almost a year on this design and the results are stunning. The package comes with an integrated strap in the body, rubber holds for improved grip and reinforced corners for protection from bump damage. The keyboard and screensaver on this edition have been visually ramped up for that extra flair. All of this while being ultra-functional and looking stunning with any modern outfit.

According to Hugh, Republic of Gamers was the perfect partner for their next big creation since ROG has a very open-minded approach. “Its engineers were willing to go into unknown territory, and they had the know-how and the competence to deliver those ideas.” For Shawn Yen, ROG Vice President of the Gaming Business Unit, their collaboration with ACRONYM opened their perspective towards looking at things “from a different angle.”

Based on the Asus ROG Flow Z13, the one designed by ACRONYM also gets a bump up in specifications for ultimate performance. While the vanilla version has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 graphics card, the special edition gets an RTX 4070 instead. The same goes for LPDDR5 RAM as well, there’s 16GB on the normal one and 32GB on the ACRONYM edition. Other than that, the 13.4-inch IPS QHD+ (16:10) screen having 165Hz refresh rate, the 13th-gen Intel Core i9-13900H processor, 1TB of M.2 SSD storage and the 56Wh battery with 130W charging are identical.

According to Asus, only 14 limited edition versions of the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 ACRONYM will be available to purchase. The price for all the added perks and exclusivity will be a mind-numbing $2,500, so one should better stick to the Surface Pro, iPad Pro, or Galaxy Tab S6!

ASUS debuts the ProArt Mouse, a creator-focused mouse with a StudioBook-style dedicated Dial

With six buttons and three scroll-based inputs, the ASUS ProArt MD300 mouse is a nifty wireless gadget designed for digital creators, giving them control over their software. The mouse builds on the success of ASUS’ ProArt series of creator-focused machines spanning laptops, desktops, and displays. The mouse is a relatively new addition, along with other ProArt-branded accessories like a mousepad and even a backpack.

A key highlight of the mouse’s design is that ASUS Dial, located right underneath where you’d normally rest your thumb. Borrowing from the ASUS Dial seen on the ASUS ProArt StudioBook, the ProArt Mouse comes with a similar input that’s customizable through the Armoury Crate software that lets you program the Dial’s controls based on the application it’s running. Alongside the ASUS Dial, you’ve got two scroll wheels and three buttons with professional-grade Omron switches that provide tactile mouse clicks.

Designer: ASUS

The ProArt Mouse sports an ergonomic design that’s made for comfortable use over long periods of time. An elevated thumb rest gives users a relaxed mouse usage experience, while the ProArt’s abundance of inputs makes it a versatile little peripheral to your workstation. The dedicated Dial button pairs with a variety of creativity apps like Adobe’s visual suite as well as your browser, while also providing a tap input alongside the rotary input. The two other scrollers come with scrolling and tapping inputs too, allowing you to preview elements/links or switch between apps. The mouse also has a dedicated middle button located between the left and right clickers (and behind the main scroll wheel) for CAD applications that require a middle button input. You can additionally control the ProArt Mouse’s inputs and settings via ASUS’ Armoury Crate software.

A winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award, the ProArt Mouse MD300 is powered by a high-performance sensor that tracks at up to 4200 dpi with a polling rate of 1000Hz, working efficiently even on glass surfaces. It supports both Bluetooth as well as RF 2.4GHz connectivity, with the latter offering a more seamless, lag-free experience. The mouse can even work with up to 3 devices collectively via Bluetooth fast pairing technology and switch between them by pressing the pair button. A built-in battery gives the ProArt Mouse up to 150 days of use on a full charge, and a USB-C port on the front lets you fast-charge your mouse, giving you 8 hours of use on just a single minute of charge. The Asus ProArt Mouse MD300 comes in ‘Storm Black’, and is available in just India for a price of Rs. 8,499 or $103.3 USD.

ROG Raikiri Pro with built-in customizable OLED screen expands gaming HUD for more options

Asus has surprised nerds at this year’s CES with an officially licensed Xbox gaming controller that has a dedicated 1.3-inch mini OLED display to beam custom animations, display favorite wallpaper, microphone status, battery status, or the active controller profile.

The 128×40 resolution screen is placed right where you’d find the Xbox home button, and I’m not complaining one bit. Dubbed ROG Raikiri Pro, the controller derives its name from Naruto’s special attack.

Designer: Asus

Raikiri Pro is the first ever Xbox-licensed controller having tri-mode connectivity, wherein it has Bluetooth, a low-latency 2.4GHz RF mode, and wired USB-C. The controller is well suited for PC connectivity with all the pro features on offer. Asus officially mentions the controller to have Xbox Series X/S console compatibility only, so PlayStation 5 is left high and dry for now. The controller has four left and right rear buttons with a textured finish for slippery fingers. These buttons double as hotkeys for game commands, or even adjusting the game sensitivity.

Asus gives gamers the option to switch profiles in-game via the two buttons at the top. Further customization is possible with the four programmable rear buttons, circular D-pad and trigger locks for options beyond the known Xbox layout. The button remapping, joystick sensitivity, dead zones and trigger modes are also customizable using the Asus Armoury Crate PC app. To take game immersion even further the controller has a built-in ESS DAC for premium sound from the 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is no word on the pricing of the Raikiri Pro Xbox controller as of now, but one thing is certain, it will demand a price slightly above the normal options. Agonizingly there is no word either on the availability of the attractive controller, however, common sense suggests a Q1 release might be imminent.

Ultra-versatile ROG Destrier Ergo Gaming Chair cocoons mobile gamers in distraction-free ergonomic comfort

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) had a stellar lineup at the virtual launch event for CES 2023 and a gaming chair for mobile gamers is one accessory everyone wanted to see.

Mobile gaming is on the rise in the last couple of years and is estimated to grow given the focus on developing gaming phones capable of running console-quality AAA titles. The ROG Destrier Ergo Gaming Chair slots in perfectly as mobile gamers tend to keep searching for that ergonomic comfort zone that gives them the tactical edge in competitive or even casual gaming with buddies.

Designer: Asus

In a world filled with dedicated gaming chairs like the Razer Enki. Herman Miller X Logitech G Embody, Secretlab Omega or Cougar Explore S; the ROG’s new mobile gaming chair wants to plug in the gap left by others. One thing is not surprising though; the chair has a dual head, dual lumbar, and padded arm support for long sessions of gaming without making the user feel tired. To ensure you give 100% attention to the in-game action and nothing else, the chair has a detachable acoustic panel to shield gamers from any visual distractions. It also provides active noise reduction by creating an acoustic barrier.

Asus ROG has opted for a cyborg-styled exoskeletal design for that Cyberpunk appeal. The function is also primal here, as the armrest can be raised by up to 14 cm to have maximum flexibility when it comes to positioning the arms optimally for FPS, racing or strategy games. Add to that the ability to rotate the armrest 360 degrees, and you’re set to gain a lasting advantage. Predictably the aluminum frame chair has a versatile seat adjustment option, breathable mesh and premium PU foam for no-frills support and comfort.

ROG Destrier Ergo Gaming Chair weighing 25 kg is capable of cocooning a person weighing up to 150kg in total immersion for uninterrupted gaming frenzy. Whether that amount of mobile gaming is good for you is still a question for another day though. For now, those who like the idea of a dedicated mobile gaming chair already need to keep an eye on this one in the next couple of months. There’s no word on the price or availability as of now but the gaming chair should be up for grabs soon.
