Meet Outlander: An ATV Trike designed to dominate on the rough, red terrain of Mars

On Mars, every vehicle’s an off-roader…

Say hello to Outlander, the red planet’s first “MTV”, or Mars Terrain Veloce. Designed by Seongho Kim, the Outlander aims at being the one definitive vehicle to help you conquer the red planet’s inhospitable terrain. The three-wheeled format gives the Outlander a great balance between maneuverability and weight, and a 3D-printed metal chassis, coupled with CO2 blasters and airless tires allows the rider to effortlessly navigate Mars’ undulating surface without any hiccups whatsoever.

Designer: Seongho Kim

It’s entirely conceivable that we’re probably going to see a manned mission to Mars in our lifetime, and if we intend on inhabiting the planet, we need to be able to explore it too. That’s where the Outlander comes in, helping you effectively do a ground mission on the planet’s uneven surface without requiring any complex vehicular assistance. The Outlander is practically the ATV’s distant cousin, optimized for a foreign environment.

The single-seater trike combines a compact and lightweight structure with a capable design that maximizes fun and minimizes failure. The two tires on the front are perfect for being able to adeptly navigate undulating land, while LiDAR sensor between them helps the Outlander understand the road ahead. A set of CO2 canisters right underneath the rider fire when the ‘MTV’ needs vertical lift, giving the vehicle an upward push to help it climb and jump higher. Meanwhile, cleverly engineered airless tires absorb any sort of rough impact without bursting or crumbling like conventional tires and wheels.

The entire trike has an otherwise skeletal design from head to wheel. Carbon fiber and 3D-printed metal parts help give the trike its sturdiness and lightweight structure, and a cargo unit right between the rider’s legs lets them carry important equipment from A to B. Under the cargo hatch sits the Outlander’s battery unit, which supplies power to the rear-wheel motor.

Cake’s Autonomous ATV for farms and ranches keeps the delicate ecosystem unperturbed

We are slowly heading into a future where sustainable and responsible farming will be vital. Avenues of farming balance crucially on the biodiversity, and regenerative ranches. Keeping multi-crop fields requires avid supervision and the CAKE Kibb autonomous mobility solution aids in regenerative agriculture in already depleting soil resources.

The all-terrain ATV is designed with a priority on using natural resources wherever possible and has environmental protection etched in its DNA since it can plant and harvest crops responsibly on its own or in semi-autonomous mode. Traditionally, the machinery used on fields and farms is driven by fossil fuels which juxtaposes with the vision of taking care of the animals and surroundings without affecting the ecology of the area. This has prompted the designer to create Kibb which doesn’t impact the biodiversity of the region or damage the surroundings – rather it aids the farmers like never before.

Designer: Fanny Jonsson

Kibb in itself means, Ox in Gutniska dialect of the Swedish island Gotland. This is a representation of the strength of the vehicle while having the gentleness of the animal when it comes to nature. Driven by an electric motor, the ATV moves tenderly around the farm, and that too autonomously. Modularity is one key feature of Kibb, as the components can be swapped around to cater to the tasks required at the ranch or farm. This prevents obsolescence cycles as the parts can be updated over time.

The powerful vehicle is designed in a way to have the least possible impact without compromising the inherent capability. A holistic approach of ATV is centered on the material choices for the components. For instance, the tires are crafted from dandelions which are in plenty in the Scandinavian landscape, or the plastic used in the body is made from locally available linseed plants grown in Sweden. The frame and other vital components are made from aluminum which is a sustainable material as compared to other industrial materials – it is highly recyclable without any major material degradation.

According to the designer, the main beneficiaries of this project are the animals and the bugs living in the soil. The diverse ecosystem of all the organisms helps rejuvenate the soil’s quality over time. The electric-driven Kibb plays a vital role in this as it keeps the environment around the farm and animals untouched from any physical or chemical interference.

Tesla’s Kid-Size Cyberquad ATV: For Your Mini Musk

Released just in time for Christmas (but not guaranteed for Christmas delivery), Tesla is selling a child-sized version of the Cyberquad it introduced alongside the Cybertruck’s November 2019 unveiling. You know, because why should adults get to have all the fun? Wait – I’m supposed to be having fun? Something has gone horribly wrong.

Built by Radio Flyer for Tesla, the pint-sized ATV costs $1,900 and features a full steel frame, cushioned seat, adjustable suspension with rear disk brakes, and LED light bars. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the Cyberquad has a 15-mile range at speeds up to 10 MPH or restricted to 5 MPH if you don’t trust your kids like me. I swear, I can’t turn my back for one second without another fire getting started.

Unfortunately for anybody hoping to catch a ride on their kid’s new Cyberquad, the max weight capacity is 150 lbs., meaning my kids won’t be getting one, just like I never got the Power Wheels Jeep I always wanted growing up. Which, just for the record, wasn’t the character-building exercise my dad led me to believe it would be.

Cybertruck-inspired Rover concept was designed to explore the terrain on Mars

The Pandemax Concept by Radek Štěpán is unconventional, to say the least. It has a distinct Star Wars-inspired aesthetic and those all-terrain tires and that high ground clearance really implies the car could easily work on the roughest of alien terrain. Designed to be a sort of explorer vehicle or manned rover, the Pandemax comes with two seats that are at the absolute front of the vehicle, with a panoramic windshield that lets the explorers get a full view of the terrain and landscape ahead of them. Sure, there are a few questions that come to mind too, especially regarding driver safety and also the center-of-gravity, given that the drivers are sitting outside the car’s wheelbase. However, it’s a neat aesthetic exploration of an interplanetary vehicle if you ask us. I’m especially loving the Cybertruck vibe, and I’m sure the driver gets a hell of a view! Just hope that windshield glass is sturdier than the Cybertruck’s…

A look at the car’s unusual placement of the cockpit. The passenger cabin overhangs off the front, giving the car a distinctly different aesthetic altogether. I guess we could just chalk it up to conceptual creative freedom. As the cockpit door opens upwards, the base descends downwards too, giving you a stepping surface as you climb into the vehicle. When the cockpit door and floor finally close together, you’re left with a car that has surprisingly large ground clearance, making it perfect for rough terrain.

The headlights and taillights on the Pandemax are rather ‘Cybertruckian’ too, with the LED strip design present on the front and back, as well as the top. Its boot at the back has a shutter-style cover too, almost perfectly mimicking the one found on Tesla’s Cybertruck.
