These iPhone wallpapers automatically change to reflect your phone’s battery level!

Using a clever technique hidden within Apple Shortcuts, Ben Vessey’s dynamic wallpapers for the Apple iPhone have the quirky ability to reflect your phone’s battery level. For now, the wallpapers have three stages – Full Battery, Low Battery, and Charging.

You may remember Vessey’s work from a while ago when he debuted the retro iOS icon collection that turned your state-of-the-art smartphone into the ultimate Apple throwback machine. Having worked with Shortcuts before, Vessey’s latest experiment turns your wallpaper into a massive battery indicator. With beautifully designed artworks, these wallpapers alter as the battery level changes, telling you when it’s time to juice up.

The Dynamo packs (which are available on Vessey’s website for £3.99) come in two styles with 3 wallpapers each – one containing Apple-inspired artwork, and another with quirky cartoon faces. You can easily install them using Apple Shortcuts (no jailbreak required) on iPhones 6S and beyond. Once installed, the dynamic wallpapers aren’t just about being a quirky little easter-egg… they even help you know when to plug your charger in and when not to. The low-battery wallpaper kicks in when your battery’s at 20%, reminding you that it’s a good time to charge. Now if only there was a dynamic wallpaper that helped me know whether I’m connected to a WiFi network or whether my phone’s running on carrier data!

Retro iOS icon collection gives your iPhone a classic Apple Macintosh vibe!

It doesn’t get more Apple Fanboy than this… (In a good way!)

You can now turn your new, bleeding-edge iPhone into a beautiful throwback machine with this retro icon set by digital designer Ben Vessey. Titled the iOS (Old School), this handmade set of over 100 icons gives your iPhone a beautifully vintage ’84 Apple Macintosh vibe with its pixelated style. Available in both regular and dark mode variants, Vessey’s lovingly and painstakingly designed icons for virtually every commonplace app, and made them available on Gumroad for an extremely reasonable price of £3.99 ($5.53).

The icons make use of an Apple iOS 14 feature called Shortcuts, which lets you create custom thumbnails for apps (MKBHD shows you how in this video). Vessey’s app-pack comes with more than 110 beautifully vintage-styled icons and both black and white backgrounds that you can use to turn your modern smartphone into a retro-inspired, clean, minimalist device that would probably impress Jobs! Does it also increase battery life? I doubt it, although the dark mode should consume lesser power, theoretically!

Mac OS Old School Desktop Would Look Smashing on Retina MacBook Pro

There have been other throwback GUIs in the past, but this one created by the Amsterdam-based art director Ben Vessey looks pretty cool. You can retrofy your modern Mac OS machine thanks to this set of icons and wallpapers.

Ben Vessey was sick with the current trend of making icons shiny, thanks to the overuse of shadows and gradients, so he decided to make his own. He started out making a minimalistic design, but then went into full retro mode by using the style of the original Mac Finder, circa 1984. Then, he made some wallpaper to replicate the original OS ’84 backgrounds.
