BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 is a skateboard-inspired stylized urban e-bike for Generation Z!

I have a hard time breaking it to the average millennial, but your time is over. The BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 bike is aimed at the Generation Z crowd and this design encapsulates that futuristic feel in an instant!

With the backing of some exceptional concepts in the past, the German manufacturer is now turning its attention towards stylish electric vehicles, and this one is the perfect beginning. BMW Motorrad has announced the mini-bike ahead of its debut at IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich next week!

Being more than just a mere cool toy, this electric two-wheeler is a futuristic yet simple solution for urban mobility, focusing on city tours to be precise. According to the head of vehicle design, BMW Motorrad, the bike is a skateboard on wheels, developed for anyone who likes to be mobile and independent. The Concept CE 02 has a very minimalist footprint and a low center of gravity – in line with the company’s aspiration to bring a level of design innovation honed by the emotional element, and most of all, the riding fun.

The CE 02 ebike comes with an 11kW belt-driven motor that hurls the two-wheeler to a maximum speed of 56 miles per hour and a range of 90 kilometers on a single charge. According to BMW Group, the bike weighs 265 pounds in total which is lightweight and maneuverable for city riding fun.  The seat on this one is designed to give the rider the freedom to drive it in an upright or leaning forward position. In between the free space between the seat and the frame is space to keep small things secured by elastic bands. Also, the bracket under the batteries stores a skateboard and doubles as a footrest.

To display all the vital telemetry like speed or remaining battery life, the bike has a colored screen on the handlebars. To keep the minimalist theme, BMW Group chooses small black colored headlights having four LED lighting elements for enough illumination during the nighttime.

Among all this, we have to remember, this is still a concept electric bike and when it will actually be commercialized into production is not known yet. If it does, will it look like what we are seeing is also uncertain. Nonetheless, the BMW CE 02 is an urban commuter worth every rider’s time.

BMW Rival Rig gaming chair comes with Adaptive Seating, Micro Climate Control and even massage functions!

Designworks, the design innovation studio for the BMW Group has unveiled their concept for an advanced gaming chair designed to bring an immersive physical experience for the gamers, at the first-ever BMW Esports Boost event. Called the Rival Rig gaming chair, it is the perfect bridge between the physical world and the virtual world – giving the users a functional sensory input while being utterly comfortable. A perfect proposition for streamers and Esports professionals indeed. The idea is to analyze the movements of the player, and with time adapt to their sitting position for a weightless feeling sans any physical stress during long hours of casual or professional gaming. This leads to sustained performance of the player not limited by physical or mental stress.

Rival Rig is embedded with sensors that detect the rise in body temperature and then beam cool air to the particular area. They call it the Microclimate Control System. Likewise, if there is too much pressure on the arms, the armrests lower automatically to eliminate any pressure points – a feature dubbed as the Adaptive Seating made possible with the embedded pneumatic air pads and electro-mechanical actuators. Designworks worked with gamers and athletes to understand body posture and the different actions and moods they are going through during gaming. This resulted in different modes like ease mode for relaxed posture or the boost mode which brings the chair forward and the table lowered and angled for immersive gameplay. The chair also has the massage function to release any stress build-up in the muscles with extended gaming stints. All this in conjunction with the AI-enabled algorithm brings automated control to the chair allowing players to concentrate on their gameplay.

According to Holger Hampf, President of Designworks, the team’s goal was to “create the most comfortable seating, hand posture, and head movement situation, that allow the gamer to fully immerse.” Inspiration for the project came from fields where split-second decisions have to be made – like in spacecraft and Formula 1. Holger Hampf added that they adapted learning from these fields to the microscopic level and it was all about millimeters rather than centimeters,” in design perfection. The led lighting of the chair adapts to the environment of the in-game action for the perfect immersive environment. How the rig is articulating also allows the audience (online and live) to be part of the action – for good bonding between the gaming athletes and spectators.

The gaming chair will be open source for adding new features and also allowing game studios to tailor the in-game experience. It will also aid in collaboration with the right partners to access the health and sports data to design ergonomic chairs of the future. Rival Rig is truly the onset of immersion via the power of design!

YD JOB ALERT: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is looking for an Industrial Design Intern

rr_phantom_2018_1

Standing at the very pinnacle of automotive design is Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, a company that manufactures arguably the best luxury automobiles money can buy. A company first started by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce at the beginning of the 20th century, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is now a wholly owned subsidiary of German group BMW. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is looking for a bright young Industrial Design Intern for their Bespoke Internship for a 6-month period beginning September 2019.

THE OPPORTUNITY

A GOOD INTERNSHIP IS NEVER HANDS-OFF

Share your passion for getting hands-on with us.

We believe in creating an environment where our interns really can learn by doing during their time with us and where they are given their own areas of responsibilities from the start. That’s why our experts treat you as part of the team from day one, encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table – and give you the opportunity to really show what you can do.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is part of the BMW Group and its Goodwood manufacturing plant sits in the heart of the West Sussex countryside.

As the epitome of exclusive super luxury, a Rolls-Royce delivers unmatched quality, style and performance. Behind the legendary brand is a team of passionate and highly talented people who do their utmost to satisfy the wishes of clients who commission a Rolls-Royce. Each year we offer a number of internship opportunities and are keen to hear from you if you are currently studying an undergraduate degree and are looking to complete a 6 or 12-month placement.

The maxim of Sir Henry Royce – ‘take the best that exists and make it better’ permeates everything we do at Rolls-Royce. As a student, you will have hands-on experience from day one, while gaining practical insight into the corporate operations of a world-class automotive manufacturer.

Bespoke Design

The Bespoke Design Intern creates and steers desirable and profitable design features as part of existing and new model developments in line with Bespoke project and brand requirements. Working from within the Rolls-Royce Design team the design work is coordinated and managed by the Bespoke Project Team who steer the bespoke business. Design work can be modifications to existing features or from a blank sheet of paper and can derive from customer requests or be pro-actively offered as individual features or part of a Collection Car. Compelling theme development creates a strong framework of desirability for customer and collection cars and there is a need for both 2D graphical and 3D product design skills. Whilst there are specific Colour and Trim Designers within the team an appreciation of color and materials is expected.

Very strong creativity and presentation skills are required using both traditional sketching skills as well as digital techniques (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). Self-management skills are needed to work towards practical solutions with demanding deadlines and also to coordinate inputs from others and steer them effectively where necessary. An awareness of differing international cultures is helpful.

Good interpersonal skills (both verbal and written) are required in order to pursue design solutions and ‘sell’ ideas both internally and externally. The Design Intern needs the ability to juggle different demands, sometimes conflicting, whilst delivering attractive and customer focussed design solutions in a timely fashion. There is a need to appreciate technical and packaging issues and concepts must have a high level of practicality as designs move from concept to reality in a short and at times demanding timeframe.

The Intern role will join the team to work on developing design themes for customer cars and new Bespoke features using a combination of sketched images and retouched images from the Rolls-Royce Configurator. There will be further opportunities to be involved in concept feature development and a personally driven project.

BENEFITS

We offer a competitive salary of £17,500 per annum and a range of benefits including a pension scheme, generous holiday allowance and a subsidized on-site restaurant. As well as being surrounded by many fellow interns throughout your internship you will be supported by our experts in your chosen field.

REQUIREMENTS

Working towards a B.A or M.A. in Industrial Design or Automotive Design or equivalent with proven skills by way of portfolio and CV – please attach a portfolio of recent work to your application (PDF recommended max size 10Mb).
Some previous relevant work experience is helpful in a related field. Technical understanding and acumen to work on practical solutions within short time frames and manage time effectively. Some understanding of different manufacturing methods is helpful and an appreciation of regional markets. The Intern should be able to display knowledge of luxury trends (both current and emerging innovations).

• Strong personal presentation skills
• Strong visual imagery to sell ideas – sketching techniques plus Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
• Experience of 3D modeling and visualization tools is an advantage
• Very good English language skills required – German language skills may be useful
• Driving licence may be an advantage

BMW Z4 – A sinewy beast

While we were ogling at dragons on popular TV shows, the people at BMW built their own beast. The Z4 Roadster concept, launched only yesterday at BMW’s annual Monterey Car Week, features a sharper and more dynamic aesthetic, with practically perfect bilateral symmetry on the outside from front to back. The car’s design explores a relatively slimmer dual kidney grill on the front, but makes up for it with massive air intakes on the lower bumper. The headlights are designed to be extremely streamlined (giving it the aggressive demeanor), and taillights, even more so. Pair this with the car’s sculpted design and wedge-shaped silhouette, it truly looks like a crouching beast, ready to pounce!

While the outside celebrates sheer symmetry, the inside reflects another story, with the seats being colored differently. The driver gets a black leather seat, while the passenger traveling shotgun has a seat coated with brown leather. Even the dashboard is divided based on this color scheme. Personally, I think it’s kitschy, fun, and gives one something to talk about.

The Z4 debuted yesterday still remains within the concept domain, although BMW indicates a production model reveal early next year, hopefully at the Geneva Motor Show next year!

A BMW Tribute to Turbo

hommage_00

BMW 2002 Hommage celebrates the birth of the turbocharged car. Though it’s a tribute to the 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo, it’s based on the current BMW M2 sports coupe.

Like most of BMW’s Hommage concepts, it’s all about styling over hardware and the flashy 2002 has plenty in the form of custom wheels and stock M2 treatments.

The “Turbomeister” concept sports a colorful skin inspired by the Jagermeister-sponsored racing cars of the 1970s – but instead of the booze brand’s signature buck, there’s a more refined Turbomeister crest.

Designer: BMW Group

It sits extremely low against the road which is only exaggerated by the flared bodywork comprised largely of carbon fiber, long wheelbase, short overhangs and a prominent “shark nose”.

hommage_03

The most literal reference to the original 2002, the 2002 Hommage features a unifying “waterline” that connects many of the car’s formal elements. This unbroken carbon fiber line physically wraps around the car from front to rear, while also creating a horizontal distinction between upper and lower body surfaces.
