This medical boot sneaker (sans any fractures or sprain) is the footwear to show-off

Wait, what? Is that a guy with broken feet or sprained ankles? It’s actually a pair of sneakers meant to look like a medical boot!

Meet the AC1 boot by Brooklyn-based mischief-makers MSCHF created to explore the lighter side of hopping around in walking boots meant for rehabilitation from a foot injury.

Designer: MSCHF

As good as the sneaker design seems for the Gen-Z, the inspiration story is equally interesting. In 2015 CEO Lukas Bentel saw a person waking in medical boots down Prince Street in New York. He thought it to be the “most interestingly designed object,” especially the function-over-fashion character. According to him pondering over objects that aren’t intended to be aesthetic and given the least attention when it comes to design, can end up “looking really interesting and out-there.”

The result, AC.1 plastic Aircast boots by the art collective mirroring the look of an orthopedic show with complete details like Velcro straps and holes. There’s even the removable water-resistant inner neoprene sock liner to keep the realism going. What distinguishes this flexible molded rubber Aircast boot from a real medical boot that’s meant for slow excruciating walks, is the presence of the branding logo on all sides. To keep the hip-hop shoe comfortable for all-day use, MSCHF has loaded it with the patented Wowcomfy tech cushions for the underfoot and high-traction outsole.

Just for the record, the maker has explicitly mentioned that the sneaker is not meant for injured foot support. The MSCHF AC-1 will be available on October 19 with a price tag of $450 USD, so if you want to own an out-of-the-box boot, this is the one to burn money on. Apparently, you can get a couple of real medical boots for the same price!

This leg brace promises improved health for patients with its mindful, sole-friendly design that reduces pain

Whether you’ve had an injury or unfortunately suffer from a chronic medical problem – choosing the right braces for your legs, ankle or feet is vital. Wearing one that is not ergonomically built for your comfort and convenience can hamper day-to-day activities, and also create other problems like excessive heat in the feet which leads to bad smell and itching. The latter can result in allergies if not taken care of in time. Keeping the ergonomic needs of its people in mind, design studio Valkiria has mindfully thought of leg braces (designed for Mercur) that users would actually love to use.

The design studio has put a lot of time and research into creating the blueprint, and final product of the Mercur Immobilizer Boot M1 leg braces with consultation from existing users of other such braces and health experts who conveyed the problem and the intended solution they would want. In the end, Valkiria managed to come up with a product that is safe, stays consistent in its shape with use, and intended for long-term usage if the rehabilitation period is extended. The form and function of the Boot M1 facilitate the user with both feet fit as it is bilateral – in both longer and shorter versions depending on the need. Also, there are the anatomical plastic nails that reduce the pressure on the calf, and for easy opening and closing, there is the Velcro fastening system. To address the smelling issue, the design studio chooses a breathable material to annihilate the growth of bacteria and keep the heat down.

One thing that’s utterly frustrating with leg braces is the fatigue it causes to the knee and the hip muscles. Boot M1 has the luxury of anatomical insole and sole that makes sure these issues are no longer there. Most of all it doesn’t in any way hamper mobility or is uncomfortable for extended use.

Nike’s 2021 flagship football shoe is here and it draws inspiration from the swiftness of a dragonfly!

Dragonflies are ultra agile with the ability to propel themselves in any direction accelerating at 4 G linearly and 9 G – making sharp turns without loss of balance. That ability is attributed to the wing design of the insect with the flight muscles attached to the wing bases, making it hover in slow flight if need be. Nike Football Footwear Designer, Jeongwoo Lee took this natural structure of the dragonfly’s wings as inspiration for creating a lightweight Mercurial that football players have always dreamt of. On paper, the concept seems not as intriguing but the end result justifies the designer’s vision in a flurry of neon and metallic hues. A radical upgrade from 2019 Mercurial 360, this new boot design is the epitome of efficiency and lightweight aesthetics as the unnecessary elements have been shaved off for swift moves on the field.

The perfect example of Nike’s ideology “better is temporary ethos,” the new Mercurial Vapor 14 boot (a.k.a. Nike Mercurial Vapor/Superfly Dragonfly) is centered around four key areas – fit, touch, traction, and style. As Jeongwoo says, “We sought to create that same lightweight expression (of a dragonfly) with strategically placed materials for the new Mercurial. We think this is the future of speed and the kind of feel players have been asking for.” Adapting the unique design of dragonfly wings, the boot’s natural touch and upper feels just like the extension of the foot for swift acceleration and braking in any direction without loss in body balance. That’s attributed to the Nike Aerotrak plate for a springy feel. As Lee further exclaimed, “We’ve defined a brand-new kind of boot-to-ball touch. It’s tactile and grippy for control at high speeds, while also bringing flexibility at the same time”.

The Nike Mercurial Vapor 14 shoe has a premium lining where it’s needed, along with the Flyknit on top of the foot keeps you comfortable even after a long grueling match on the pitch. Combine that with the Vaporposite upper having a grippy lightweight mesh and you are all set for supreme control when the ball lands on your feet for the sublime touches. Nike has not shirked away from making this pair of soccer shoes to be absolutely flamboyant. To top it off, the shoes have the digital psychedelic palette drawing inspiration from the computer motherboards and become a way to celebrate the iconic Mercurials for the past 23 years!
