This futuristic-looking phone controller puts a literal spin on shooting videos

Many of us today use our smartphones not only to take pictures but also to record videos. Some even use their mobile devices to play games that require them to point their phones’ cameras at certain things or people. In fact, some think that this kind of augmented reality or AR experience could become more commonplace in the future. Holding our phones in our hands for these seems like the most natural way to use them, but they might not be the most efficient nor the safest. Monopods, a.k.a. the notorious selfie sticks, at one point became so popular exactly because of that, while phone gimbals also started popping to give budding filmmakers a hand. AR gamers, however, don’t neatly fit these groups, so this concept of a gun-shaped phone controller tries to envision what their future could look like, presuming this type of gaming actually takes off.

Designer: Gihawoo Design (UGLY.DUCKLING)

Tech companies, especially one particular social network giant, would have us believe in a future where augmented reality is the way we experience the world around us. Without comfortable and “normal” AR glasses, however, that future might still be a long time coming. In the meantime, there are already ways to experience a bit of that augmented reality, particularly through our smartphones. Games like Pokemon GO and navigation apps are just the tip of the iceberg, and there might still be a few other AR applications and experiences coming in the near future.

Holding a phone while using such AR apps might not be the most ideal. Sure, it’s fine for a casual game like Pokemon GO, but anything more intensive might require a more stable grip, not to mention more flexible controls. Telegun is a concept that delivers exactly that in a form that may make more sense considering its primary gaming application. It’s pretty much like a phone gimbal in the shape of a toy gun. Compared to a wand that you have to hold upright, pointing with this accessory feels almost like second nature, especially if you’re playing an AR game that involves shooting virtual objects overlaid on top of the real world.

Telegun’s use, however, extends beyond AR gaming, and it can also serve as a normal phone holder for shooting videos. A phone can be mounted either horizontally or vertically, and the joints make it easy to keep the phone stable at an angle rather than relying on your shaking arm. It also has its own built-in camera, so you can record videos even without a phone, though it might look more awkward that way, not to mention concerning for bystanders.

This phone controller is definitely a unique way to mount a phone, whether for gaming or recording videos. Its minimalist gun-shaped design almost makes it look like a prop from a sci-fi show. It’s arguable whether basing it off a gun is a smart or safe choice, but compared to a typical phone gimbal or monopod, it’s definitely a more ergonomic and convenient form.

This odd-looking robot concept is a live streamer’s dream crew

It wasn’t too long ago when YouTubers and live streamers were treated almost on the same level as Hollywood celebrities. Some are still stars, but that market has exploded in the past few years to the point that almost anyone and everyone is trying to make it big, especially when the lure of fame and fortune is just too strong. This is supposedly in the DNA of the so-called Gen Z, whose aptitude for recording even the most mundane parts of life has become legendary. After all, all you need is a smartphone, right? While that might be true to some extent, this dog-eat-dog “VTuber” market relies on getting every aspect of the shot right, from the lighting to the angle to the audio. Often, you’ll need half a dozen disparate tools for the job, but this stick-like robot brings all of that to you, literally.

Designers: Gabin Park, Byeonggwan Kim, Ramen Kim, Seokhyun Han

Calling this machine a “robot” probably requires a little stretch of the imagination. To some extent, it’s like a Roomba that grew a rod and a circle at the top. It can roll here and there, as well as rotate its “head” and the rod that acts as its arm, all controlled by a cylindrical remote. As far as being a robot is concerned, that’s pretty much it, but where it really shines for content creators is all the functions it houses in that cramped body.

1

That large circle at the top, for example, might be mistaken for just being that popular ring light, but it is definitely a lot more than that. It has a touch screen, for example, that acts both as a monitor when recording as well as a typical display for watching content. That circular shape might seem odd at first, even considering the ring light, but the choice was intentional to create a sense of flow and rhythm, adding a bit of dynamism to what would otherwise be a drab box.

The “arm” is actually a modular container for different parts you’ll need to stream or record videos. That includes a camera, of course, as well as a mic, more lights, and even a smartphone holder. Depending on what you may already have, you might need some or all of these, hence their modularity. Both the arm and the head can rotate and move to desired angles, giving creators the flexibility and freedom they need.

Despite all these features, the concept design named “LG Only i” retains a visual simplicity that is intended to put the minds of these creative individuals at ease. The choice of basic shapes, like a circle and two lines, was made to convey images of calmness and minimalism. Whether such a device can actually be made is a tough question, but it will definitely be an all-in-one recording studio dream come true for Gen Z and any other generation of content creators and consumers.

Sandmarc’s clip-on polarizing filter for the iPhone camera helps reduce glare to make your photos pop

Have you ever tried taking a photo of fish in a pond only to realize that your camera is catching the reflections on top of the water instead of the fish IN the water? Or how about trying to take a photo from your airplane window at night, but struggling with the fact that your phone’s reflection keeps coming in the photo? Reflections can sometimes really enhance a photo, but at other times, they’re just a hindrance. Think back to the time when you tried taking a selfie while wearing spectacles and all you got were reflections of things around you instead of the camera capturing your eyes… The way you eliminate those reflections is by using what’s called a polarizing filter – a special piece of glass that can selectively block out reflections and allow certain wavelengths of light to pass through. Designed to do precisely that, Sandmarc’s Drama Polarizer Filter comes with a clip-on feature that lets you easily attach it to iPhone cameras or practically any other smartphone camera. The Drama Polarizer Filter covers all three lenses on the iPhone camera and can be rotated to help you allow certain wavelengths to pass through to your camera. The Drama Polarizer Filter is perhaps the easiest, quickest hack to better photography. You can use it to cut reflections, accentuate colors, and even boost contrast to create photos that just look better because you’ve now got control over the light that makes it into your camera’s lens!

Designer: Sandmarc

The filter either clips onto the back of your phone, or if you’re using a Sandmarc iPhone case, it screws into the special mounting system built into the case’s camera cutout. To use the filter, just fire your camera app, compose your shot, and rotate the filter to choose what wavelengths to let through. Rotating the filter changes what wavelengths the filter allows, and just the way you’d turn the ring on a camera lens to focus on an object, you turn the polarizer filter to focus on a wavelength. Once you notice a difference and when you feel the composition looks good, click away! Or hey, you could record videos too…

Designed as a part of Sandmarc’s existing line of smartphone camera filters, the Drama Polarizer Filter fits directly onto other Sandmarc lenses, like their Telephoto, Anamorphic and Wide Lenses.

The filter does a variety of things, although cutting glare is probably one of its prime functions. Whether you’re taking photos of someone through a glass window, or of a friend (or yourself) wearing spectacles or sunglasses, or even of a lovely lake or pond, you can now use the filter to eliminate reflections entirely to allow for crystal clear photos with zero glare and great detail.

Sometimes multiple wavelengths of light clash with one another, creating a ‘haze’ of colors. With the Drama Polarizing Filter, you can cut down on unwanted wavelengths to get better color reproduction and higher dynamic range. You could take photos of brilliant blue skies by eliminating all the non-blue frequencies, or take incredible green landscapes by focusing on the green wavelength. The lens does much more than just eliminate glare, it eliminates wavelengths you don’t need either, allowing your camera to capture just the right photo by accentuating and focusing on certain colors and wavelengths… so you can take some truly beautiful photos that look like they were shot on camera, but essentially, they were shot on your smartphone!

Huawei Mate 50 Pro delivers an elegant and powerful tool for content creators

Smartphones today are more than just gadgets reserved for more tech-savvy people. They have now become lifestyle choices and tools for making social connections. As the perception of these devices change, so do the appreciation of their designs or lack thereof. Going beyond mere utility or ergonomics, many smartphones have started to boldly embrace aesthetics as an important part of their DNA. It’s still a work in progress, though, with very few notable brands and models making that courageous leap. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is the latest to join that growing roster, leading the way with an advanced flagship that looks exquisite as it is powerful, offering a content creation powerhouse that will match a designer’s aesthetic tastes.

Designer: Huawei

It is only recently that design and aesthetics have become important selling points for a smartphone. While it is always possible to embellish a phone with cases, stickers, and accessories, its innate design speaks volumes about a company’s attention to detail and dedication to a holistic user experience. More often than not, a smartphone that looks good also comes with the hardware to match.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is definitely an example of that. In stark contrast to the common trend of smartphones today, Huawei opted for a symmetrical design throughout the phone. In particular, the large camera array is placed in the middle, with four circles arranged in a uniform 2×2 grid. These cameras are enclosed in a Space Ring with an embossed Clous de Paris pattern, similar to what you’d find on luxury watches. Rather than obnoxiously calling attention to itself, this balanced camera design brings a touch of elegance and class to the smartphone.

Huawei’s choice of materials also points to the company’s design acumen. In addition to the classic Silver and Black glass finishes, the Mate 50 Pro also comes in an orange vegan leather that adds a unique identity to the phone. It is inspired by the orange rays of the sun, which seems appropriate for the Space Ring design of the camera at its center. And despite its luxurious looks, the smartphone isn’t a delicate snowflake. A new Kunlun Glass material protects the phone’s screen from drops ten times better, according to the company. In addition to its IP68 dust and water resistance rating, owners will be assured that their faithful companions will survive the test of time and accidents.

The Huawei Mate 50 Pro isn’t just a pretty face, though. In addition to some of the best hardware available to smartphones today, it boasts one of the most advanced camera systems in the market. The 50MP Ultra Aperture XMAGE camera, in particular, offers ten different aperture sizes ranging from F1.4 to F4.0, putting you in control of your blurs and depths of field. Together with the large and fast 6.74-inch 120Hz display, the Mate 50 Pro offers mobile photographers, videographers, vloggers, and designers one of the most powerful tools in their digital arsenal.

With the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, Huawei is proving that advanced technology doesn’t have to look cold and impersonal. Combining elegant design and high-end hardware, it offers digital creatives a tool that not only meets their needs but also matches their lifestyles as well.

Vlog 1 concept is an all-in-one, portable tool for vloggers to help you be the next influencer!

A lot of people now, especially the younger ones, have at one point or another tried or wanted to try vlogging. I myself have considered it for both professional and personal reasons. But one thing that has stopped me from going all out is that there is just so much to think about equipment-wise. When it comes to content or planning or promoting, I have no problems. But just thinking about the shooting and editing part is enough to make me just put it off indefinitely.

Designer: Stang .id

The designer thought about this problem that vloggers face: choosing the right equipment, setting it up, carrying all the equipment around, etc. He came up with a product concept that current and future vloggers will probably want to come true eventually. The Vlog 1 is a concept that combines a camera, a built-in gimbal for stability, a built-in microphone, space for a bigger battery, and all in a portable and sturdy package. There are no attachments or things to plug in so you can just go ahead and shoot and record whatever you want.

If you’re used to using a traditional camera, the button controls here will seem very familiar. It uses an old-school knob to switch modes so you won’t have to panic (or is that just me?) when you need to do something else while shooting. It has a built-in gimbal so you can shoot steady and the joystick lets you have control over the gyro movement when panning or tracking. And while you’re shooting your video, there’s a quick access button that will let you take pictures when needed.

The Vlog 1 also has a built-in flashlight that gives a similar effect to what the ubiquitous ring lights bring. This means you don’t need to carry around extra lights while you’re shooting. It also has a built-in mic that can shut out unwanted noise because of its padding. The battery should also last you longer, at least in theory. The best thing about this concept is that the device is pretty portable so you can carry it anywhere without spending minutes on setting everything up.

The device looks like a mini-robot or a character that will fit in Wall-E. Hopefully, if it becomes an actual product, the video and sound quality will also be great as those are probably the two most important things a vlogger needs.

DJI Osmo Action 3 camera boasts stabilized 4K/120fps recording with unique dual screen setup

Compact action cameras are becoming ever so popular due to their quick nature of use and carrying aesthetics. GoPro has been the undisputed king in this product line, although DJI has not been far behind with the Action 2 modular camera. Now, the brand wants to attract a big chunk of users with a revamped design and fresh name.

Dubbed the Osmo Action 3, the action camera is more inclined towards a design language similar to the first model released in 2019 – the DJI Osmo Action. The look and design are going back to the roots of tried and tested realms of the action camera world for good.

Designer: DJI

Call it a coincidence or a measured move, but the DJI’s camera is announced at the same time as the GoPro’s Hero 11 action cams. For now, we zoom-in the focus on the DJI action cam only, since it has got some major revamps. The vlogging camera gets a beefed-up battery life, dual touchscreens (to access settings from front and back) and an optimized vertical shooting mode for content creators.

The action cam gets a 1/1.7-inch imaging system with shooting capability in a 155-degree field of view at 4K resolution (120fps). There’s the DJI PockSteady 3.0 image stabilization option even at 4K/120 fps settings which is a good option. DJI has brought the HorizonSteady option to keep the footage stable even with intense bumping or abrupt 360-degree rotation for people who are into dynamic adventure sports like surfing or skateboarding. The sweet spot between these two options is the HorizonBalancing feature for things like obstacle course runs.

DJI Osmo Action has a beefy 1770mAh Extreme battery that takes 50 minutes to charge and facilitates around 160 minutes of recording time. DJI has given precedence to heat management (the predecessor has overheating issues) with the resilience of temperatures as low as -4 degrees F. The 4x digital zoom-capable action cam also gets horizontal and vertical mounting to hook onto things like a helmet or handles.

For better audio recording control, the Osmo Action 3 cam has a three-mic stereo recording setup for eliminating wind noise, and voice controls for different scenarios. It also supports direct USB-C connections and external microphones too. Although modularity is no longer a feature now, the action cam has attachments and accessories like a waterproof case for shooting underwater, different mounts and a protective lens cover. The camera itself is waterproof to a depth of 52 feet without the casing.

The pricing for the DJI Osmo Action 3 camera starts at $329 for the Standard combo which comes with things like an extreme battery, horizontal-vertical protective mounting frame, quick-release adapter mount and adhesive base. Compared to the GoPro Hero 11 at $499 it is a cheaper option, and if can live up to its claim, users will fancy the DJI’s action cam!

Pagani’s intricately designed analogue camera brings a retro feel for photographers

Automotive alchemist Horacio Pagani is engrossed deep in the art of car making, and he also appreciates the art of analouge photography. Taking the passion for intricate car designs and the subtle craft of analouge photograph developing to the next extreme, is this latest project by Pagani.

The inspiration for crafting the most unique analouge camera on the planet came after closely observing the Gibellini film camera given to him. At that instance, Pagani realized the importance of enjoying the pleasure of taking real photographs, compared to clicking countless photos on mobile devices. This led to a collaboration with Gibellini for an analouge camera design that resonates with the intricacies of his hypercars.

Designer: Pagani and Gibellini

This timeless camera christened “Gibellini GP810HP” is machined from a single block of aluminum and the tripod has a leather-covered carbon fiber enclosure. According to Horacio this project is tailored for demanding customers who appreciate the beauty in everything. There’s a lot of work put into the making and it’s an object “created for a precise purpose: to evoke an emotion.” Of course, current Pagani owners can customize this analouge camera to match their car.

The camera is meant for purists as it brings the complexities like a total of eight axes of adjustment across two planes. Everything on the Gibellini GP810HP is there to be managed by the photographer – right from the large format genre and focal-plane alignment to the bellows length and basics including the focus adjustment, shutter speed, and aperture settings.

The technical details on the camera are as interesting as the magnetic design of the exterior – there’s a huge 8×10-inch plate that captures the film images via the bellows. The optical and focal planes can be adjusted by eight degrees which makes the thing good for artsy tilt-shift method of taking photos and also architectural photography.

As it is customary with Pagani, the Gibellini GP810HP camera can only be bought via the official Automobili channels or ordered from Pagani dealers worldwide. The initial batch of 30 cameras will be exclusive to current Pagani owners only. In total there will be 75 units of the analouge camera priced at around $109,530. So, as I said – only for purists with a ton of money to spare for their passion for manual photography on a limited edition Pagani camera.

This Leica-inspired camera is a minimal + eco-friendly device with an old-school charm

There was a point in time when DSLRs reigned supreme, and when carrying a camera by your side was a matter of pride rather than an inconvenience. Nowadays, with smartphone photography rapidly taking over the world, the need to carry or own even a camera has heavily subsided. However, the simplicity and beauty of those good old days is something technology can never replace. If you’re someone who loves taking a trip down memory lane, and still maintains a soft spot for cameras in your heart – then the Paper Shoot camera could be the one for you.

Designer: Paper Shoot

Inspired by the Leica camera, the Paper Shoot is a delicate gadget with a card-like exterior, and a thin digital camera running down its center. The pocket-sized camera is built from eco-friendly materials, making the product a pretty sustainable one. It has only one button – which functions as the On/Off, and shutter button, allowing the camera to maintain a minimal and uncomplicated form. It features a 16MP sensor and has been amped with automatic exposure compensation, and white balance.

The adorable device can record 1080p videos for up to 10 seconds. It even has four color filters for you to get creative with! So, you can click pictures in black and white, sepia, as well as a blue tone, besides your normal colored effect. It also supports Standard and WiFi SD cards up to 32GB.

Much like its aesthetics, the features of the Paper Shoot Camera are pretty simple and sweet, however, the true star of the camera are its old-school charm and delicate beauty. It’s a great option to capture your favorite moments on, especially when you’re taking a break from your smartphone. It’s a smart and fun way to reduce your screen time and dampen your reliance on your smartphone.

These Canon EOS R5 cameras are notorious Transformers in disguise

Of all things intangible, you won’t expect a DSLR camera to change shape into a sneaky Transformer. However that’s the case with the latest creation by Japanese company Takara Tomy specializing in creating Transformers toys, and Canon that needs no introduction.

Canon has been known to create nifty little replicas of its own products in the past and this time around too they’ve surprised the community with this cool gadget. It’s no coincidence that two of the most iconic products of these two giants have been fused into one product. Yes, I’m talking about the EOS and mighty ol’ Transformers.

Designer:  Takara Tomy

If you thought the alternate form of Optimus Prime was only a badass truck, think again as this small little toy proves it wrong. The 80 percent scale model of the Canon EOS R5 camera swiftly turns into a Transformer with little articulation, and boy, that Lens cap turning into a shield for the Optimus Prime R5 (that’s what this Autobot is christened) is the coolest thing you’ll see all day long. The maker adds a bit of spice to this transforming creation as the Decepticon gets its own miniature camera in the hand.

The real-looking Canon mirrorless camera even gets another version, wherein the resulting Transformer is a Decepticon Refraktor. Although it is not as detailed as the blue and red Autobots leader, still, a cool piece to show off on your desk setup. The Refraktor gets a Quantum Dial and the ability to split into three. So, you get A Spector, Spyglass, and Viewfinder in the seminal animation.

Attention to detail of these two Transformer models is worth appreciating. You can press the shutter button, rotate the dial, or peek inside the viewfinder. The lens can be removed like an interchangeable lens to expose the 35mm sensor and the trademark L lens red ring adds an element of realism.

Both these Transformers/cameras are slated for a February 25th, 2023 release in Japan, with pre-orders for the Optimus Prime version starting now until September 28th. The Decepticon Reflektor model will only be a Takara Tomy mall exclusive buyable though. They’ll be priced at 19,500 yen (approximately $147) and given the iconic appeal they should sell like hot cakes!

MECA 3-in-1 webcam addresses the biggest pains in video meetings

Video meetings, virtual conferences, and online classes have become pretty normal these days, even as the world tries to return to its usual patterns. But while apps and programs have been upgraded to adapt to these new standards of remote communication, hardware has inched very little over the past two years. Camera and microphone quality have improved, of course, but everything else seems to have remained the same. In the rush to prepare for work from home settings, many people have resigned themselves to webcams that came with their laptops or cheap accessories they could easily get their hands on. Many of these could be considered passable or even decent, but this multi-functional webcam goes the extra mile to solve one of the biggest problems with video chats: making eye contact.

Designer: Jeremy Qin

Click Here to Buy Now: $119 $149 (21% off). Hurry, only 12 left!

When the first webcams were designed, their purpose was significantly simpler than what we need today. It didn’t matter much which part of your face other people were seeing, mostly because video chats and meetings were uncommon until recently. But with these meetings becoming more regular and “Zoom fatigue” becoming a thing, people have realized the psychological impacts of seeing people without actually being near them. And in particular, they have realized how eye contact is just as important in conveying respect and confidence in a virtual chat as it is in face-to-face meetings.

Unfortunately, not all webcams are actually designed to put your eyes front and center, which is where MECA comes in. Right off the bat, this accessory that you can clip on top of any monitor is an all-in-one solution to video conferencing so that you won’t need anything else other than your computer. Although it’s formally called a webcam, it also has a built-in mic to handle your voice, as well as an adjustable lamp light to put yourself in the best light.

You can select the brightness or warmth of the light using a single button on the left side of the main body. The right side has a button for turning the mic on or off, and it comes with an indicator to show which state it’s in. MECA is actually very privacy-friendly in this way, offering clear cues when particular hardware is in use. The camera, for example, also has a small light when it’s actively recording, reminding users when they need to turn off the camera later on.

MECA’s real pull, however, is how the camera isn’t actually part of the webcam’s clip-on base. You can pull it down so that it is level with your eyes so that you won’t have to adjust your face just to make it look like you’re staring straight at other participants in the call. The camera has a non-slip pad on its back to make sure it doesn’t slide on your monitor, but to be doubly sure that it stays put, MECA comes with double-sided tapes you can use to stick it to your screen. These tapes are also guaranteed not to leave any residue or damage the screen when you take them off. For laptop users, there’s a magnetic attachment you place behind the screen to keep the camera in place without using adhesives.

MECA’s simple design makes it easy to carry around and clip onto any kind of screen, including curved monitors. A Full HD camera, three light temperatures, and easy-to-use controls help to make you look and sound good, reducing the stress of these meetings. For just $119, you’re not only getting a complete video conferencing solution in a single package; you’re also getting the confidence boost you need to look sharp and professional in any meeting.
