Top 10 Camping Essentials You’ll Wish You Packed

It can be stressful to prepare for a camping trip, especially with a large family, and may result in forgetting some essential items. To ensure a successful and highly adventurous trip, make sure to prepare and follow a checklist so that you can stay organized and not skip or miss some of the necessary items. While one usually tends to remember the tents, sleeping bags, and food, it’s the smaller things that can cause panic and create chaos in the overall camping experience. Hence here is our list of the top ten commonly forgotten camping items.

1. Portable chairs

After a long and tiring day of hiking or walking, it can become uncomfortable to sit on the ground. That’s where one realizes the importance of portable chairs as they can offer a brilliant and comfortable seating option during camping.

Designer: Trippy Outdoor

The Tripster is an innovative portable chair by Trippy Outdoor as it is convenient, easy to use, compact, and can be easily stored. The chair’s design features a smart assembly mechanism that transforms it from a comfortable high-back outdoor chair into two numbers of wooden pieces for easy storage. Its design focuses on essential elements like the seat and the backrest. This lightweight and sturdy chair offers a stable seating option.

2. Extra Towels

Do not forget to bring extra towels for your camping trip as one can never anticipate the weather conditions that one may face in the campground. While one may remember to pack one towel for each family member, there can be unpredictable scenarios like constant rain that may make the existing towels difficult to dry.

Designer: Taisei

Japarcana Imabari towels are inspired by Japanese culture and design principles and are crafted using time-tested weaving techniques with high-quality cotton, and they adhere to strict quality standards. They provide excellent water absorption, and soft texture, and are highly durable. Japarcana towels are available in two varieties namely Yudono which is a light and durable option and Omiyage which is a thicker and more luxurious choice made with Superior Pima Cotton.

3. Gloves

Gloves form an essential part of a camping trip so that one does not wake up shivering during a camping trip. Even if it is summertime, the early mornings can be cold and chilly, making gloves one of the most valuable items that can help you keep warm.

Designer: Adrien Beyk of Quanta Vici

With climate change and unpredictable weather patterns, it is important to look out for flexible and smart winter clothing. Quanta Vici’s thermal clothing lineup offers various options for staying warm. Not only their gloves but also their jackets and vests provide the freedom to select the desired level of warmth. This can be achieved through a smartphone app or its built-in thermostat. Note that despite the tech-driven features, the apparel is fashionable and recycled polyester is used to create these animal-free vegan-friendly leather gloves and jackets.

4. Extra Pair of Shoes

Many people forget to pack an extra pair of camping shoes which is important considering the uncertainty about the conditions that one may encounter at the campground. For instance, the soil can be muddy leaving the shoes wet and dirty.

Designer: Terrein

Hiking trails are fun but they often pose the risk of ankle twisting or spraining, making durable boots with excellent traction essential. Terrein, a German start-up, has developed the Terrein Ascent boot with Betterguards’ adaptive ankle protection technology. This high-ankle boot reduces the risk of injuries and offers constant ankle support. It comes with a hydraulic ankle protection system, featuring a piston and Velcro strap that safeguards against twisting.

5. A Complete First-Aid Kit

Prioritizing safety is a must; hence it is crucial to pack a well-equipped first-aid kit before embarking on any camping trip. Make sure to pack a complete and up-to-date first-aid kit for every camping excursion and make it a point to include your prescription medications.

Designer: Jason Lee

For easy access to your first aid supplies, use an organized first aid box where all the medicines are easy to access. Consider a box with clear slots that allow you to see the location of each item and are easy to refill.

6. Headlamp

Never forget to pack a headlamp before embarking on your enjoyable trip as it comes into play as an essential survival tool after sunset.

Designer: Mpowerd

The Luci Beam by Mpowerd is a 2-in-1 solar-powered headlamp and flashlight which is solar-powered, it has a water-resistant body and can withstand and function in various external weather conditions. The product provides around 300 lumens of brightness and is perfect for illuminating paths and trails. The best part of this device is that it can easily switch from handheld to headlamp, enables hands-free operation, and can be solar-powered or charged via a USB.

7. Bug Spray

The bug spray is one of the most important products that is required while camping and it should be strong enough to repel bugs and mosquitoes throughout outdoor activities such as hiking, sleeping, camp setup, and cooking, just to name a few.

Designer: VIBIS Design

Instead of a bug spray, one can also repel mosquitoes effortlessly with VesperGuard. It is a compact device that can create a 30 ft protective bubble around you simply at the flip of a switch for nearly 16 hours. Its portable design makes it perfect for indoor or outdoor use and it is convenient to use with USB-C charging.

8. Binoculars

Outdoor camping is the perfect time and opportunity to establish your connection with the natural ecosystem. So, invest in a reliable pair of binoculars that can offer optimum views.

Designer: karnswork

Use your binoculars for watching birds, stars, wildlife, and nature, and have a fulfilling outdoor camping experience. Although binoculars have gradually improved in magnification and quality, the Zoomers Binoculars are a step ahead because of their sleek, unified appearance complemented with advanced features.

9. Umbrella

It’s better to be prepared for rain as one may have to step out of their tent even if it rains. So, make sure to pack umbrellas as they are convenient to use for short walks, to the campsite’s facilities, or your vehicle.

Designer: Mabu

The Umbrella Lantern is one of the best rainy-day companions that combines an umbrella with built-in LED lights. Its lights can be switched on with a simple button and it can function as a useful tool for illuminating poorly lit areas and preventing a potential fall or slip in the rain.

10. Thermos

Your camping trip will be incomplete without sipping cold water or enjoying a cup of tea or coffee on your own or with friends and family. So, purchase the ideal thermos, and do not forget to carry it along.

Designer: Ringo

The Ringo Bottle is a brilliant invention that combines a water bottle with a built-in MagSafe-compatible iPhone stand. The bottle comes with a ring-shaped element on the top that doubly functions as a handle and also allows one to attach the phone magnetically. The best part is that it provides a stable stand for filming videos or making FaceTime calls with family and friends during camping.

Use these tips to improve the efficiency of your camping experience. Additionally, check online checklists and do not carry unnecessary items like excessive clothing, electronics, and other bulky belongings that may take up valuable space.

This portable electric pot was designed to cook soup while camping!

This portable electric pot is conceptualized for cooking soups and stews while camping.

You don’t normally think ‘soup’ when it comes to camping food, but it sure sounds like the move. Cozying up in front of the fire pit with a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup on a cold, windy evening sounds a lot more satisfying than being next to the fire on the same night with a hot dog in hand.

Designer: Yunsoo Choi

Since camping restricts many of the different modes of cooking typically available to us, the menu is usually pretty limited too. Hoping to expand the culinary experience of camping, industrial designer Yunsoo Choi conceptualized an electric pot for camping that can even be used to make soup.

Characterized by its triangular shape, Choi’s electric pot takes on the same form as tripods and table lamps that have similar silhouettes. While its shape is familiar, its operation slightly differs to be suitable for cooking stews and soups. Camping accessories and cookware keep a compact build to assume ultimate portability and Choi’s electric pot is no different. Through a telescopic layering system, the different modules of Choi’s electric pot can fit into one another and be carried by a raised, removable handlebar.

When cooking soup, campers can use the appliance’s main basin to combine all of their ingredients. Just around the basin’s front panel, a timer and temperature control interface allows users to adjust the cooking conditions of each stew and soup according to its recipe. An additional light attachment is also integrated into the build of Choi’s electric pot, allowing for late-night cooking to soothe those munchies.

This hybrid camping accessory combines a handheld flashlight with a multi-port power bank!

The M-flashlight is an EDC camping accessory that fuses the function of a flashlight with a rectangular power bank to light your way from waypoint to waypoint, never losing power along the way.

When camping, multifunctional appliances are key to thriving in nature. Nonelectric accessories like multi-tools and hatchets help users prepare for and build fires, pitch tents and chop wood during camping trips. Then, gas-powered and battery-operated appliances help finish the jobs like cooking meals and brewing coffee.

The M-Flashlight from designer Wenhua Xu combines the most practical aspects of camping supplies to create a portable, handheld flashlight that doubles as a power bank to charge up any device that might need some extra power.

Equipped with a 10000mAh high-capacity battery, the M-Flashlight is comprised of a round, miniature flashlight that fuses with a rectangular power bank to charge up devices like smartphones and other electronic appliances. Located at the top of the flashlight, a sliding dial turns the appliance on and off. Then, around the back, users will find the ports for USB, HDMI, and Type C cables.

During camping trips, we might need our smartphones during hiking or road trips to find our location or our next route of action. Considering this, our smartphones must have enough charge to get us there. The M-flashlight ensures the camper in each of us that we’ll never be without direction or light to bring us to our next destination.

Designer: Wenhua Xu

Handheld by design, the M-Flashlight is an EDC camping accessory.

The rectangular power bank gives the M-flashlight an unconventional shape.

A sliding toggle operates the power switch.

Conceptualized in two different colors, the M-Flashlight comes in purple and orange tones.

This outdoor sleeping bag and its packaging are made of 100% natural materials!

This sleeping bag is made of 100% natural, from the packaging to the last button. Thanks to our patented, innovative insulation made of RDS-certified down and wool, DownWool, we achieve the best sleeping climate. Down is light and has excellent insulation properties. Wool is insensitive to moisture and regulates the sleeping climate. In DownWool we combine the good properties of down and wool. All individual parts on the sleeping bag are OEKOTEX certified. At the end of its long life, the sleeping bag can be completely composted.

Back to nature. Grüezi bag wanted to create a sleeping bag made from 100% natural materials – from the packaging down to the last button: and they did it! You will be amazed at the sleeping conditions and the sense of well-being you get in the sleeping bag. Once you’ve slept in it, you’ll never want to come out!

Thanks to its natural materials, it feels pleasantly soft and its innovative DownWool filling, a mixture of down and wool, creates an outstanding sleep climate. The down ensures cozy insulation, the wool works like natural air-conditioning. Thanks to its overlapping design, the Nature can be opened entirely; this means that it is easier to get into the sleeping bag.

For extra comfort, its width can also be adjusted if you require more space. The pillow pocket is also great. Just insert a jacket or pullover here and you already have a non-shifting pillow. Have a fantastic sleep with the Nature in nature.

DownWool is an innovative high-end filling composed of 70% down and 30% wool. Down has a very high insulation capacity and a low weight. However, down only provides insulation as long as it is dry. With increasing humidity, the insulating effect of down is significantly reduced. The characteristic of wool is that it provides insulation and absorbs moisture. In this way, the down will stay dry and thus keeps its very high insulation capacity. With the unique mix of DownWool we achieve optimal insulation and a perfect dry sleeping climate with a low weight. The sleeping climate is decisive for sleep quality. The deeper and more relaxed your sleep, the more rested you will be the next morning.

Love coffee? Protect it with this military-grade coffee kit designed for camping!

If there was an emergency, I would instantly protect my dog and my coffee. So if you are anything like me then the BruTrek Expedition Coffee Kit is essential for you! Planetary Design has created one of the world’s most rugged, portable, coffee brewing kits for modern-day explorers who need more than just a french press. This coffee kit has a full range of accessories and looks like it is ready to be air-dropped into a war zone and I just know it will survive with the 29-L Zarges case that protects it.

The brewing range comes in a sturdy, custom foam cushioned, lightweight German aluminum box which is popular for overlanding and can be neatly stacked over other similar-sized Zarges boxes or strapped to the outside of a vehicle if needed. It is designed to keep dust and moisture out, and it is also IGBC-certified bear-resistant according to Zarges USA – so no aggressive grizzlies will be stealing your coffee although, before coffee, some of us might be like angry bears ourselves! The kit includes a large 32-oz (946-ml) BruTrek French press with a more group-friendly option feauturing a handle and a spout. The french press comes with all the gear needed to store and pour the perfect cup outdoors – four 8-oz cups, an 8-oz Airscape air-lockout coffee canister, a small “CarGo Can” container for sugar and a coffee scoop!

Of course, you’ll need to bring along the actual coffee and water, as well as a pot and stove to heat that water up. Those who prefer to grind their own fresh beans every morning might also want to carry something like the VSSL Java.

With an MSRP of US$500, the BruTrek Expedition Coffee Kit will very likely price out many a casual camper, and it’s definitely more than we’ll be spending for Father’s Day this year (sorry, Dad). Still, it’s clearly one of the most rugged, neatly packaged go-anywhere coffee solutions out there, and that Zarges case alone retails for just over $260, so we certainly won’t be surprised to see overland adventurers strapping these kits to their six-figure expedition rigs in short order. A good cup of fresh coffee in the middle of nowhere can prove rather priceless, after all.

Those looking for something similar for a fraction of the cost might consider the basic BruTrek Camp Coffee Kit, which packages together the French press, two cups, Airscape canister and scoop in a soft carry bag for a $213 MSRP (on sale for $154 as of publishing). Or, they could just throw their existing inexpensive coffee gear and outdoor mugs into a Rubbermaid box and call it a day.

Glamping gets a sustainable upgrade with what designers call ‘architectural ecotourism’!

The O’Reilly’s campground is nestled in Queensland’s lush Lamington National Park and is an example of how glamping can be eco-friendly if we make the right design choices! The project shines a light on architecture-inspired ecotourism with a fully functioning campsite equipped with all amenities. O’Reilly is different because it was created keeping sustainable building practices at its core so as to not disturb the pristine landscape but at the same time let guests be immersed in it.

The campground includes buildings featuring a kitchen, common gathering spaces, a fire pit and more. All the facilities were carefully constructed by consciously choosing to make it environmentally friendly – lightweight structures used sustainably sourced timber, an on site sewer treatment to avoid adding waste to natural water bodies, collecting rain water, having passive solar access, cross ventilation to reduce power consumption, growing and preserving vegetation and more.

Guests will be able to enjoy an authentic camping experience without the hassle of bringing their own equipment (such as safari tents, linen, firewood and food) or pretending to be on an episode of the Survivor. The campground has universal design so it is accessible and inclusive of all groups of people who want to spend time in nature. Guests can choose to stay in glamping safari tents or bring their RVs as the site provides a place for both powered and unpowered vehicles.

O’Reilly’s architectural design was the bridge to help facilitate a deeper connection to the environment and that commitment is seen in every element of the campground – skeletal structure resembles a tree canopy so it can provide shelter while protecting the views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the interior elements are filled with linear structural design details to represent the linear patterns of the surrounding rainforests! The glamping site is an embodiment of a beautiful, respectful and playful relationship between humans and nature.

This modern indoor BBQ grill is inspired by the mechanism of an air purifier!

Missing the BBQ parties during game nights and holidays in quarantine? This conceptual BBQ grill, Campin, makes it possible to still enjoy it indoors (perhaps with fewer people, and if it is just yourself then you won’t even have to share food!) while following the COVID-19 restrictions about outdoor activities and gatherings. BBQ parties are almost a cultural tradition to celebrate events big and small, and while traditionally one has to have a backyard for it, you can now enjoy it thanks to Campin within the comfort of your home without the need for the extra outdoor space – a huge blessing for the urban demographic who is cooped up inside in the pandemic.

It has two core parts – the BBQ bowl at the top and the bottom base. The BBQ bowl has a metal container that houses the whole setup including the intake vent, a charcoal bowl, a grill, and a lid. These pieces are modular and can be separated for easy cleaning and management. There is an LED located under the BBQ bowl that illuminates the lower side and making it look like there is a real fire for the ‘right vibes’.  Campin lets you grill with a charcoal fire by using the specific charcoal bowl for that authentic taste. The smoke is sucked in through the intake vent outside the grill and it is purified and discharged through the filter structure inside the body – the mechanism is similar to an air purifier. The lower part in front of the base includes an outlet to discharge the purified air.

Another thoughtful detail that saves space and reduces mess is the little storage compartment in the bottom – all sauces, seasonings, and dips can be put in here so there is no need for extra counter space or a runner who has to keep going back and forth to the kitchen. Campin can be charged when not in use via the charging port on the rear end of the base making it functional and portable. With this product, you won’t need an invite to a backyard BBQ anymore or have to wait for restrictions to ease up, just fire up that grill and celebrate that you made it through yet another day of 2020.

These transparent wooden hanging tents are built using shipbuilding techniques!

This will sound lame but the Hanging Shelter (Hængende Ly in Danish) is actually the literal meaning of hanging out – you see it? It is a lot more than hammock strung up on trees, in fact, it is a very unique accommodation that has been custom designed using traditional shipbuilding techniques.

The enclosed treehouse is nestled 2.5 meters above the ground that offers 360-degree views of the lush green Genner area in Denmark. The only way to get in and out of the Hanging Shelter is via a basic ladder. The structure is constructed with steam-bent oak which forms the curved walls and floor – something that sets it apart from similar tents and is hard to miss! To give it a height there are eight additional arched wood frames that continue to shape the rounded walls vertically. The design team has used a thin, clear membrane to wrap the entire shelter in so that you are protected from different weather conditions and are still able to soak in all the natural greenery Genner has to offer.

Stedse Architects are known for architectural projects that revolve around “sustainable construction, including climate adaptation, energy-efficient buildings, energy calculations and environmental consulting” – making them worthy of admiration on the design front as well as being a community-conscious company. The Hanging Shelter is crafted by a team of skilled boat builders and engineers who worked with the architects. Both the teams – Stedse and the local builders – have a love for nature and using wood as an element. This made their collaboration successful in highlighting nature, design, and the intricate art of woodworking with a single overnight accommodation that had minimal site impact.

Wood gets a lot of flak when it comes to being used as a sustainable material because people often say “you are killing trees” but that is not how sustainable materials are picked. It is a natural, renewable, and eco-friendly material for building, with a lighter carbon footprint than steel or concrete. Maximizing the usage of wood in residential and commercial construction can remove an estimated 21 million tons of C02 from the atmosphere annually which is equal to taking 4.4 million cars off the road. Companies using wood in construction also follow a cycle to make sure they are not depleting resources faster than they can be renewed – hence many partake in planting trees all the time. Also, residues of wood industries are utilized in either by-product manufacture or fuel and clean bio-energy making it a very clever choice for sustainable construction. The company hopes that the Hanging Shelter can be an example of a project that will “show the potential of using wood as a natural, sustainable, and adaptable building material.”

This trailer expands into a 6 people camper with a big al fresco dining adventure!

It has been over six months of being in pandemic-lockdown for me so forgive my obsession with campers, I am just constantly planning getaways in my head and each trip comes with a different mobile home. The latest addition to my list is the Mobi X camper by Mobi Nomads.

This is a multi-application trailer camper that comes packed with their latest features and customization options. The teardrop-shaped trailer’s most distinctive element is the rooftop tent! Mobi X can host up to six people with enough sleeping places, a toilet, a shower, and a kitchen. Mobi Nomads is a South-African company and has incorporated some of their road trip experiences into the selection of certain features like the trailer’s rear hatch that lifts to reveal a shallow galley, with a swing-away that accesses a large slide-out which brings out a fridge and storage cabinet – how amazing is that?! It also has a drop-down side hatch that exposes a dual-burner stove and work surface complete with large pantry space for utensils and ingredients. Cooking outdoors is a big part of the experience and Mobi makes the most of it! In fact, their standard package already comes stocked with cookware, dishes, utensils, and containers as a part of the standard package.

“Mobi X is an extremely capable and tough camper. It comes fully kitted and ready to camp and has standard features like 15 amp ACDC charger, 2.7 bar water pressure system, 150 lt water tank, water heater, 7 LED lights, heavy-duty roof rack with permanent ladder,” elaborates the team. Mobi X is not like a private-jet-level luxury camper but it is designed for adventure! It is fairly easy to set up, cozy, compact and the next step is for us to make our road trip bucket lists because now I can only think about opening up the tent and making some smores!
