Samsung and Jaden Smith Earth Day collab gives birth to stylish and sustainable accessories

Due to their sheer volume, consumer electronics, and especially mobile devices, might be one of the biggest contributors to the Earth’s demise. It is impossible at this point to turn back the clock or even quit cold turkey and give up these modern conveniences, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take steps to mitigate their harmful effects. Some major brands have started switching to more sustainable materials, whether in packaging or in the devices themselves. Those aren’t the only opportunities for improvement, though, and this collaboration between Samsung and artist and designer Jaden Smith demonstrates how mobile accessories can also benefit from sustainable design while still being fashionable and eye-catching as any design can be.

Designer: Samsung x Jaden Smith (MSFTSrep)

Mobile accessories like cases and watch straps might even be bigger offenders when it comes to pollution and carbon emissions because they’re so cheap to make, especially when you use plastic materials. People usually go through them quickly and throw them away without a second thought. It doesn’t have to be like that, of course, but it takes intentional and conscientious actions to change for the better.

Samsung’s 2023 collection of eco-conscious accessories serves as a testament to how you don’t have to sacrifice quality and beauty for sustainability, as some might incorrectly presume. The set utilizes a variety of styles popularized by Jaden Smith’s clothing label, MSFTSrep (“misfits republic”), and showcases a variety of unique designs that express a vibrant and perhaps even rebellious spirit.

The MSFTSrep Trippy Summer Spiral and Wavy Rainbow, for example, bring a splash of color to cases for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Although less flamboyant, the MSFTSrep Classic and Snowprint Galaxy Buds 2 Pro case and Galaxy Watch strap still carry distinct marks that celebrate the owner’s individuality and uniqueness.

The most important aspect of these fashionable accessories, however, is the fact that they use sustainable materials, both in their construction as well as they’re packaging. They use a combination of partially degradable plastic as well as TPU that contains recycled material from Samsung’s own manufacturing process waste. The products are also packaged in recycled paper with card stock printed using vegetable ink. Created to celebrate Earth Day next week, these designs try to send a message that being sustainable is now fashionable, and, fortunately, major brands are finally making it easier to get these products into the hands of the masses.

CASETiFY brings Crocs-like pin charms to add some fun to your phone covers

Because smartphones are almost an extension of our body in that we carry them almost everywhere we go, a lot of people also use them to express their personalities. There are a lot of cases and accessories that you can use now to shout out your fandom or your favorite things but you probably have to constantly change it if you want to show off different aspects of your personality or if you just want different things every few weeks. If you’re a fan of Crocs’ Jibbitz charms accessories, you’ll love these new cases from CASETiFY.

Designer: CASETiFY

The Push-In Cases from CASETiFY use soft-touch silicone that is able to protect your smartphone from falls, shocks, vibrations, etc. It has a MIL-STD-810G certification which is actually a military-grade standard for products that can protect your item from various environmental pressures. It also has raised bezels to protect your screen. So if you’re looking for something that has a comfortable grip, is lightweight but can still be sturdy enough to protect your phone, this is a good option. But obviously, that will not be the main reason for you to choose this case.

The case has around 13-14 dotted pits where you can plug in various charms that match your personality or your mood for that week. You have some cutesy charms like smileys, bears, rainbows, and flowers as well as more specific things like butter on toast, cowboy boots, checkered hearts, yin-yang with hearts, sunny side up eggs, etc. These charms or pins were created by the various “artists, designers, and visionaries” that they partnered with.

You get four basic colors for the Push-In Cases: black, pink, lavender, and cream. Of course, you get simple colors since the pins will be the ones to bring fun and color to your case. There’s also a limited-edition Barbie version that is black but has pre-fitted pink pins, just in time for Barbie-mania to hit us once again with the upcoming movie. For now, it’s only available for iPhones but hopefully, other brands will also be able to join the fun soon.

MOFT elevates mobile life at CES 2023 with new stands and mounts for iPhones and iPads

The tech frenzy in Las Vegas may have finally died down, but the CES dust has far from settled. There are more than a few products and prototypes that can be unpacked beyond our 35 best designs for CES this year. Despite the wide range of consumer electronics and technologies showcased, all of them have the common goal of improving human lives as well as helping our planet heal. That can be as grand as four-seater flying cars that will take commuting to new heights, literally, or something as simple yet as effective as making it easier to use our gadgets today. That kind of meaningful improvement is what MOFT is offering Apple fans with a new set of accessories designed to take their iPad and iPhone use to the next level, almost literally as well.

Designer: MOFT

Whether it’s for consuming content or creating them, tablets are often used at the desk level, which is the most uncomfortable angle for using them for long periods. While there are a few stands that try to raise the tablet screen to a more ergonomic level, the new MOFT Snap Float Folio easily outclasses them in design and versatility. Inspired by origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, this protective cover can set the iPad as much as 3.6 inches higher, while its four versatile angles let you use the iPad in various ways. Even better, the folio is made of fiberglass from recycled materials and a premium leather-like PU surface that makes it lightweight yet luxurious.

It’s not unusual for people with MacBooks to keep their iPhones nearby, though usually lying on the desk or propped up on a stand below eye level. Either way, switching back and forth between MacBook and iPhone is sure to strain your eyes and neck. The Flip Laptop iPhone Mount easily solves this by making your iPhone seemingly float beside your laptop screen. The mount attaches to the back of a laptop, and its arm can flip out in three different orientations to magnetically hold the iPhone securely. The mount is made from soft faux leather, and the adhesive can be removed without leaving a mark on your laptop’s stylish lid.

Sometimes, your quality of life doesn’t exactly require an ergonomic height but instead focuses on everyday carry convenience. The new Snap Stand Power Set offers this portable flexibility with a battery pack and a stand and wallet, both of which can magnetically attach to an iPhone, either together or alone. The minimalist design and scratch-resistant faux leather give these accessories a luxurious appearance that adds to your iPhone’s prestige, even when they’re riding on the smartphone’s back.

If you’re going to carry your iPhone around, though, you might want to take a gander at MOFT’s new Sling Case. Making you look hip while swinging your iPhone along, the case’s hidden strap connectors let you securely attach an adjustable lanyard of any length. The soft-touch faux leather case is compatible with MagSafe accessories and gives you even more reasons to save yourself the awkwardness of bulging pockets.

This quirky iPhone case embraces architectural art to improve its usability

Common smartphone cases provide the bare minimum protection possible without bulking up the device. Some go beyond the call of duty at the expense of making otherwise thin and slick phones look like miniature tanks. Other provide additional functionality, like batteries, card slots, or even rings for holding the phone more securely. That last one is a bit divisive among smartphone users because while it does offer a more secure grip, it also makes the phone look a bit awkward. That, however, has nothing on this weird-looking protective case for an iPhone that brings an extra grip and a stand in a manner that can only really be considered to be a form of art.

Designer: Bailey Hikawa

At first glance, you might not even recognize this object as a smartphone case, nor would you be able to immediately see the iPhone it snugly cradles inside. It looks more like a tiny shelf for tiny people that turns the iPhone into something like an art project. Although there will be little doubt that this can protect the phone since it manages to keep everything away from its body, some might have reservations about how it actually makes the phone more usable.

The shape of the Geta case wasn’t just plucked out of thin air. Its very name bears the source of its inspiration, that of traditional Japanese sandals that elevate their wearers with “teeth” that protrude from the bottom. In the case of this smartphone case, those teeth also hold the phone up like an angled stand. They also give places for people to insert their fingers when holding the phone.

The space between the extruded fins lets you hold the phone with a lot more confidence than a ring since you can use multiple fingers to keep it in place. Those fins are also angled at the sides so that the phone can rest on them, propping up the display for hands-free viewing. One side is cut differently, though, so it gives a different and lower angle. The fins also let you stand the phone upright in portrait orientation, which is better for video calls.

The Geta case is a rather clever way of using structure and architectural forms to provide these functions, though it admittedly won’t appeal to the majority of smartphone users. Seeing it more as a somewhat outlandish piece of art that also delivers some functionality might make it more palatable. There is even one variant made of clear silicone with fake eyelashes randomly embedded in it. It won’t, however, do anything to help make it fit inside some small bags, not to mention in your pockets.

Mujjo is releasing these eco-friendly + luxurious iPhone 14 cases on the same day as the Apple event

On September 7th, 2022, there’s going to be an Apple event, and it’s a really exciting one since they’re launching the iPhone 14! We’re expecting to see a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 (Max or Plus), and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. And in anticipation of the much-awaited release, Mujjo has already created a collection of luxurious cases for the iPhone 14! The cases are supposed to be the company’s most eco-friendly ones to date. And guess what? They’re set to be released on September 7th as well!

Designer: Mujjo

The cases are created from Ecco Leather, which is now Gold Rated by the Leather Working Group. The beautiful vegetable-tanned leather is produced in the Netherlands and provides a durable finish that will develop a patina over time, making each individual case unique. The interior of the case is lined with the finest Japanese microfibre – which is slim, lightweight, and yet extremely strong. It has a stunning satin-like finish which gives the case a really elegant and luxurious feel.

Based on customer feedback over the years, quite a few updates were made to the design as well. A raised bump around the rear camera provides great protection to the protruding lenses. The base of the iPhone is covered and protected, without obstructing the speakers or the charging port. The leather subtly rises 1mm above the edge of the glass, creating a raised bezel, which ensures abrasive surfaces are kept away from the screen.

The leather cases also feature MagSafe and are compatible with all MagSafe accessories. The side buttons have also been redesigned to encourage increased responsiveness. The range of iPhone 14 cases will be compatible with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. It will be available in three stunning color options – Tan, Black, and Monaco Blue. The Tan is a vivid caramel, that perfectly integrates both elegance and playfulness, while the Black makes a solid and powerful statement. The Monaco Blue is a riveting shade of blue with undertones of purple and green.

Mujjo’s range of sustainable and stylish cases has got us even more geared up for the launch of the iPhone 14 family! Oh, and did we mention, that you can add an optional wallet pocket that can hold up to 3 cards?!

This evolved glasses case pulls double duty as a power bank for your phone

Some things have remained unchanged for decades, but that doesn’t mean there’s no more room for improvement.

The number of items we put inside our bags seems to be growing every year to the point that some people are looking for ways to either get rid of some of them or at least combine them. Some things, however, are just indispensable, like the charging case for your earbuds, your emergency power bank for your gadgets, and, if you wear glasses, a protective case for your spectacles. Along with paper notebooks that might also be found inside those bags, those glasses cases haven’t exactly seen any significant improvement in both design and purpose. In fact, most of them are designed to break easily and be thrown away just as easily. One designer, however, realized it’s high time to give this protective accessory an upgrade by merging it with one of the most essential accessories people need these days.

Designer: Khaled Mohamed

Some ideas come like a flash of lightning, while others take a long time to percolate. Still, others tend to take detours, as in the case of this mashup of two important things inside many people’s bags. The first attempt to modernize the glasses case ended up putting an external SSD aimed at workers on the go. It turned out, however, that there was more demand for a more common mobile accessory that could be useful to almost anyone, which is how the Glasses Case Battery Bank plan was finally put into motion.

As the name so clearly states, this product combines a case for glasses with a battery bank. That is indeed more useful for almost everyone because everyone has a phone these days. And while you might not have prescription glasses, there might always be a time when you have to bring sunglasses with you, even the rather expensive kind. Sadly, almost all but the most expensive eyewear have cases that are designed with quality and longevity in mind.

In contrast, this combo aims for both with an added touch of modern convenience. The case will be covered by Italian calfskin leather, prized for its durability and its softness. On the inside, Japanese Ultrasuede will keep your glasses safe and clean while also protecting the power bank with a soft interior. As for that battery pack, it is planned to bear a 4,000 mAh capacity, enough to juice up most phones these days at least once.

If you think that combining a glasses case and a battery bank will create a rather bulky structure, then you’re half right. The design of this accessory seems to be partly inspired by origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. When acting as a glasses case, it takes the form of a prism with the battery bank serving as the solid base. Without the glasses, however, the sides of the case can unfold and wrap around the power bank, creating a more compact form.

The Glasses Case Battery Bank doesn’t exist yet in a form you can buy, though. It will be hitting crowdfunding soon and lures a tempting $99 price tag for early believers of that vision. The product will also be manufactured in the US and Canada, which should at least help reduce the carbon footprint and costs when shipping to backers in North America.

Pagina Collection brings eco-friendly, paper-designed bags, cases

I am not that great of an artist or designer, but every once in a while, I have the urge to create personalized bags and accessories. I mean, I do that in my head of course, not in real life, due to my lack of artistic talent. But for those who would want to add a bit of personalization on their bags, there are not a lot of brands or products that would let them do so. This new line from Italian company Essent’ial is one of the few that can offer this. And even better (or maybe the best part), this collection is made from eco-friendly and washable material.

Designer: Paolo Stefano Gentile

The Pagina Collection includes a backpack, notebooks, pen and accessory cases, all designed like actual paper: lined paper, notebook paper, graph paper. But the design is more than just a nostalgic look at our school supplies. The items are actually made from a special FSC-certified paper which means it has been “harvested in a responsible manner”. The material is eco-friendly, easily washable, and obviously, water-resistant.

The personalization part is a pretty good bonus feature for this collection. Since the design has lines and grids, it’s easy to write or draw on them if you want your bag or cases to have more of a personalized feel. Because of the FSC paper, you can wash the items at 30 degrees with mild soap in case you want to remove your design or you just want to clean them up. But the design can already stand on its own so if you’re like me with no artistic talent, you can just use the bags and cases as it is.

The collection includes a backpack in gray color with white lines with shoulder straps made from 100% regenerated cotton and clip closure. There’s also a notebook case that looks like an actual notebook so if you put a lined notebook inside it, there’s a notebook inception thing kind of going on. There’s also a stationery accessory case that you can use to store scissors, pens, erasers, and other things you may need for school or work. Lastly, there’s a pen case in which you can store your, well, pens. There seem to be different designs for these cases, both lined and grid.

As a stationery and bag/case collector, these are definitely something that I would like to have, even if my student years are way behind me. I do not need to design or personalize them as the designs are pretty good enough. The Pagina Collection can be used by students, kids, grown-ups, or anyone who likes paper-designed items that are eco-friendly.

This retro-inspired battery case turns the back of your phone into an LED light show

People put cases on their phones for protection, extra battery life, or self-expression, so why not have all three in one and turn your phone’s rear into a dynamic light show.

Phone cases are admittedly a bit of a controversial topic among smartphone aficionados. Phones are already designed to be as durable and as beautiful as their manufacturers want them, and some people consider it a heresy to mar a phone’s natural beauty with a case, especially those bulky ones. Others, however, want extra protection for their expensive investments or have found certain cases that appeal to their eyes. The latter group, however, sometimes has a hard time choosing between protection, battery, or beauty, and so STARcase designed something that makes that choice moot.

Designer: STARcase

To put it simply, STARcase is a rugged battery phone case that has an array of LED lights on its back. Each of these features on its own might not be so revolutionary, but having them in one place is an interesting proposition. What makes this particular incarnation of that idea really special, however, is how that LED matrix can be functional as well as aesthetic.

Sure, you can pick a variety of “low-res” animations and icons to display on the phone’s back, but that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. The LED panel can also be used to display notifications, either using an app’s icon or even as old-school scrolling text. STARcase’s creators say you can even play some games on the phone’s back using the dedicated button at the bottom.

The STARcase also has the trappings of a typical battery case, including ruggedness (MIL STD 810G-516.6 spec even) and a 2,500 mAh battery that you can charge together with the phone. You can also set at what battery percentage the phone starts drawing from the case or, alternatively, manually turn charging on and off from the mobile app. That mobile app is the gateway to all of the STARcase features, which pretty much qualifies this as a smart case, unlike your typical battery case.

The freedom of artistic expression and whimsical fun that STARcase offers do come with a price. Although described as “slim,” there is obviously a significant addition to the height and thickness of the phone when wearing this customizable armor. At the moment, STARcase is on pre-order and is compatible only with iPhones, but the Pixel 6 and even the Galaxy S22 are promised to have their turn soon.

The only thing I absolutely hate about the Google Pixel 6 is how ugly its cases are going to be…

Google Pixel 6 Protective Cover Case Alibaba

The Google Pixel 6 is coming… and with it, a barrage of hideous cases that completely destroy its beautiful aesthetic.

Roughly a month ago Jon Prosser claimed he had credible information regarding how the upcoming Google Pixel 6 would look. The images he shared with the world showed a radical new design that had a pretty standout visual detail – an elongated camera bump that covered the entire phone’s width… it was less of a bump and more of a ‘bumper’. My own personal thoughts on the design were mixed, although I have to admit it was refreshing to see Google investing effort into its Pixel range after an extremely lackluster performance last year. I am, however, having second thoughts after seeing the kinds of smartphone cases appearing on websites like Alibaba as we slowly approach the Pixel 6’s launch.

Google Pixel 6 Protective Cover Case Alibaba

You see, that camera belt may be a design feature, but it’s also a major design flaw once you consider that most smartphone users would end up buying protective cases to shield their expensive smartphones from damage. The benefit with almost every smartphone’s camera bump is that its camera exists INSIDE its body, so when case-designers make cases, the simple solution of navigating around the smartphone’s camera bump is to create a cutout there. The case has a rather manageable hole through which the camera peeks through, sort of like a ski-mask. That, however, isn’t possible with the Pixel 6… A look at the image below should explain why.

The fact that the Pixel 6’s camera module extends all the way from the left to the right makes it very difficult to create one single cutout. If one were to simply go about creating a camera hole, you’d essentially have a case that exists in two parts that are barely connected together near the middle. The case becomes a merely decorative product that simply protects the edges of the smartphone, giving no cover to the cameras, which in the case of the Pixel 6, are dangerously exposed. The only way to really overcome this problem and make a proper case would be to design OVER the phone’s wide camera bump, adding another 1-2 millimeters to it and making the bump EVEN LARGER. The cutout would then exist only around the lenses and not the bump itself… as you can see in the image below.

This ‘technical’ solution spells disaster for the Pixel 6’s aesthetics. It exaggerates the phone’s elongated camera bump, turning an elegant detail into an ugly caricature… and the minute you choose an opaque cover over a transparent one, it practically conceals every element of the Pixel 6’s design, making it look like “just another phone”, albeit with a monstrous bump around its camera, exposing a major flaw in Google’s design approach to the Pixel 6 – that smartphone designs exist in a bubble where phone-makers expect you to NOT put protective cases on expensive and fragile phones. Not Okay, Google.
