These cardboard shipping containers transform into castles to serve your cats better!

Cats are described as being a lot of things: catty, being one of them, low maintenance, is another. Cats generally take care of their own and have more fun exploring than playing tug-of-war. While cats get along just fine without the frills of marketing or zany toys from the canine aisle, Cat Person, a direct-to-consumer cat lifestyle brand aims to create solutions that improve the quality of their life and bring some curated games of curiosity to the cat’s world of crunchy paper bags and light-up laser toys.

Cat Person provides ‘whole cat care,’ as they call it, which means they’ve considered everything, even giving the shipping containers a second purpose. The team at Cat Person knows that your cat will inevitably find its way to a cardboard box in the recycling corner, so they’ve made their shipping containers convertible into feline-friendly toys. Cat Person looked to industrial design to make further use of cardboard boxes and found transformation possible in corrugated cardboard and seams. Chris Granneberg, a California-based industrial designer, collaborated with Cat Person to seamlessly turn Cat Person’s cardboard shipping boxes into playhouses fit for felines. Since Cat Person is all about strengthening the bond between cat and person, Granneberg knew he had to design the boxes in such a way that fully embraced that bond. Granneberg constructed a second life for Cat Person’s shipping boxes by implementing a similar building method to that of cardboard castles and pop-up storybooks.

The external shape of Cat Person’s shipping boxes was maintained by taking advantage of all the interior space. Granneberg designed three shipping containers for Cat Person, each forming different structures. The first, which contains initial orders for Cat Person customers, is the trial shipper and that transforms into the Paw Puzzler, a custom mailer box with a perforated corrugate tray that transforms into a shorter box dotted with holes large enough for a toy ball and your cat’s paw. The second shipping container is fitted to ship Cat Person’s most frequently bought store items, reshapes into the Cat Chalet, similar to a cardboard castle formation, with elongated dust flaps that nest together to become a peaked roof. The last shipping container is sized for the larger orders and converts into a Cat Condo much like the Cat Chalet, except the Condo’s elongated dust flaps are used to bend and separate the box into two rooms for cats to crawl between.

The creatives at Cat Person reached out to Granneberg in order to ensure that each box was given the proper attention and care needed to turn them into sustainable playgrounds for cats. By giving the shipping containers dual-purpose, Cat Person and Granneberg gave the common cardboard box a second life. If I know anything about cats though, my guess is that these cardboard castles might take on a third life in the form of scratching posts and chew toys, but as long as it’s not the couch.

A robotic cat toy + surveillance camera to keep your pet safe and entertained for hours!

My roommate’s cat is a bundle of energy. We live in a small apartment, yet somehow we’re never able to find him. We’ll occasionally find him in the oddest places — in a kitchen cabinet, behind a stack of cardboard boxes, and on multiple occasions, on our complex’s balcony. JP’s adventurous spirit is part of his charm, but you can see why my roommate might want a device that can watch over him — or, at least, keep him entertained while she’s out of the house. As it happens, the Ebo Catpal does both.

The Ebo Catpal is a robot companion that serves as both a cat sitter and a favorite toy. It’s essentially a mobile security camera that can follow your pet through the house like a Roomba. Similar to a Roomba, the device has sensors to detect obstacles in the vicinity. It also will automatically return to its charging station when low on battery. The camera’s feed is accessible through a mobile app, similar to many home security systems. It also serves a second purpose … let’s be honest, what owner can resist snapping close-up of their pet’s hijinks? For this reason, the Ebo’s camera records high-resolution footage, which you can save, edit, and post to social media. You can add cute stickers to an image, or even create gifs.

Physically, the Ebo is quite small, about the size of a tennis ball. You might wonder, How will that tiny object keep track of my cat? For those with large homes, this could be a setback. Well, as a workaround, the Ebo aims to attract your pet’s attention. How? By being an irresistible toy. At first glance, the Ebo looks more like a robotic, remote-controlled toy for a pre-schooler. Its spherical body, with heart-shaped pixelated eyes, reminds me of a Tamagotchi, but in real life. (Enabot even sells customizable clip-on “costumes” for the Ebo – as if the device wasn’t cute enough already.) The product is also the perfect size to be knocked around by a cat’s paw. It also comes with every cat’s weakness — a laser pointer. Perhaps your cat will finally capture that elusive red dot.

The Ebo was designed to make your cat the happiest pet ever. In addition to the robot companion, Enabot also created a cat collar that doubles as a step counter to track its activity. These products encourage your cat’s adventurous spirit by inviting it to play, chase, toss, etc. I can’t decide who would love the Ebo more: my roommate and me, or JP himself.

This modular cat climber was designed to fit in with your existing furniture set!

Furniture design has flourished during this pandemic as we all need something multifunctional, flexible, and space-saving – and it applies to pet furniture too. The latest piece to catch our eye has been the Kyali cat climber by MADE for its almost human furniture-like design because usually, a cat climber would stick out but this one just blends in like a cozy stool!

The climber has a warm inviting vibe because of the woody tones and the soft fabric cushioning that will instantly draw your cats in for a nap. It is a blend of a bed and a dynamic game for your pets. Featuring three shelves or levels, Kyali’s goal was to provide plenty of fun for your feline friends without taking up too much room. It has a modular structure that lets you adjust the shape to create more space for cats to explore or to make it more compact to store.

It keeps the space clutter-free while giving the cats enough surfaces to scratch and hole-some entertainment. The walnut and navy aesthetics give it an evergreen look that works for any interior style. Your cats would be happy and comfy with Kyali while letting you work from home in peace!

This modular cat furniture is designed to be a lounge for you and your pet!

Since everyone is staying home, a lot of our attention has been captured by the furniture around us which has got thinking about how it can be more multifunctional, space-saving, and aesthetic. Furniture design is moving towards a more flexible direction and CatYou in a Circle is a wonderful display of modular pieces that work for both humans and pets.

The set includes a floor sofa and a coffee table that aims to create a relaxing space for cats and their owners to have some downtime. Urban homes are only getting smaller and cat owners are faced with challenges to keep their pets entertained without taking up too much space. During quarantine, it has become more of a lesson as we share our space with them 24/7. The designer administered a questionnaire and after 233 responses it was found one-third of the cat owners living under 50 square meters. The four main problems that the design needed to solve based on their feedback were – not enough hiding space, cat furniture occupies too much living space, renovation is often not an option, and people want to have enough room to bond with their cats during playtime. The goal was to incorporate the behavior of people and cats in one design that worked to create a functional and playful space for both.

People in small living spaces use low furniture (such as rugs, floor chairs) to build intimate relaxing areas while cats prefer covert spaces, but due to the limited space, there are not many places to hide or play. CatYou in a Circle didn’t want to separate the pets from their owners so it is designed to cleverly bring them together while also maintaining boundaries. The hollow armrests and backrest offer cats a playground and hiding territory while the coffee table provides a place to sleep. The woven bamboo texture makes it possible for owners to see their cats even when they are hiding and play with through its holes. The size of holes is different in different parts of the furniture to adapt to the needs of the pet as well as humans. The backrest holes are smaller to make the cats feel more secure. But holes above are bigger so that when people lean on the sofa, they can see through the backrest and find their cats underneath. The armrest holes are bigger to offer more opportunities to interact. But holes above it are smaller to make resting your arms more comfortable. There are also two large holes on each side of armrests that allow the curious cats to pop their heads or hands out.

To make it more comfortable and cozy, fabric cushions are placed at the bottom of the armrests and the coffee table. They are skin-friendly and also absorb smell so it works especially well for smaller homes. The cushions are laundry-friendly and the armrests can be stretched out or pushed back in depending on the space and needs. The bamboo adds a touch of warmth and keeps it airy and visually light. Most cat furniture on the market is focused on either just the pet or just the interior aesthetic for the owners, it is rare to find pet furniture that works for the behavioral and spatial needs of both while still upholding the standards of style. CatYou in a Circle emphasizes the concept of “passive companion”, which leaves an autonomous space for cats. Flexible furniture should be extended to pets as well, after all, our house belongs more to them than it does to us!

Cats are so smart that they’ve now got their own board-games

All you need to entertain a dog is a stick… A cat, on the other hand, needs something more advanced, like a state-of-the-art laser light. Cats are pretty smart animals. They’re alert, nimble, and have absolutely zero interest for boring toys like chew-sticks or balls. Cats need stimulation, entertainment, and something that’s more of a challenge… which is why the guys at the Cheerble Technology Co. designed a literal board-game for them.

Designed to constantly pique a cat’s curiosity, the Cheerble is a board-and-ball combination that is to cats what pinball is to humans. It features a hyperactive vibrating ball that darts around a board, while your cat constantly follows it as a predator follows its prey. At the heart of the Cheerble board game is its ball, a durable ping-pong ball-shaped device with a synthetic fiber coating that almost looks like an abstract mouse. The ball, with built-in motors and lights, can be set to one of three active settings, causing it to dart around chaotically, grabbing a cat’s attention in the process. Paired along with the ball is the Cheerble board, which comes in two variants, both with corrugated cardboard bases – the same material used to make cat-scratching posts. Owners get to choose between Pool-type boards, which turn your cats into poolmasters, working the table and trying to pot the 8-Ball, and between the Maze-type, which features actual obstacles, and a secondary distracting toy to truly keep your feline friends constantly engaged.

The Cheerble ball comes made from durable PolyCarbonate plastic, which is more than tough enough to take on bounces, drops, and occasional scratching and chewing by the cat. The ball can be activated using the standalone button on its surface, while a MicroUSB on the other end lets you replenish the Cheerble’s battery. Designed by the same people who gave us the Wickedbone, an interactive toy for dogs, the Cheerble board isn’t just an IoT toy for cats… it occupies and engages them, yes, but at the same time, it gives them their daily dose of exercise, while keeping those predator instincts sharper than ever, unlike the claws, which get worked against the scratchable base of the Cheerble board!

A modular cat tree for when your pet is also your co-worker!

Okay, we can all agree there is never enough cat content (barring ‘Cats’ the movie) and we always want to give our pets everything ‘they’ (read: we) dream of. I know people who would buy furniture for their cat than actually getting a coffee table for themselves. And now that we all are spending more time at home with our cats, the territory that was usually theirs for half the day is now a shared space. Your pet is also your co-worker now so it is important to keep them occupied while you focus on work and since most of us live in shared apartments or small flats, it is important that we don’t buy a cat palace but invest in a more space-saving structure like Catssup.

This particular piece of cat furniture is extremely easy to set-up and seamlessly integrates with your current home setting minus the bulkiness of a conventional cat tree. In 2020, it is all about how modular the product is and that applies to pet furniture too. With Catssup you can create a DIY jungle gym by simply clamping the different parts onto existing furniture and changing the set-up whenever ‘you’ (read: your cat) need. The best part is that it doesn’t require any floor space so if you want to lie down and WFH – you absolutely can with the extra room!

The Catssup set includes a Dot Step, a Sleeping Pill, a Space Ball, a Cloud Lounge and a Climbing Tower – I would just like to say that I strongly believe human furniture should also have fun labels like this and maybe we would be more invested in it. The Dot Step is a circular attachment that lets your pet explore vertical places with the Cloud Lounge and Sleeping Pill are resting attachments. The Space Ball and Climbing tower are play pieces to keep your cat entertained, especially during virtual meetings. All you have to do is screw and clamp for rearranging the pieces suited to different functions. The C-clamp is adjustable so it will fit horizontal boards/surfaces easily.

Pet furniture > human furniture.

Pet Treat Launcher

Dogs don’t just like catching balls, they also love catching food in their mouths (except for that one dog in the viral video that’s just terrible at catching food, poor guy). Now you can launch treats in your dog’s general direction with gusto with the Pet Treat Launcher. Just load up a few pet snacks into the chamber, close it, and pull the trigger to catapult that biscuit across the room. Catch it Sparky, catch it (does anyone still name their dog Sparky? or Fido?)

One handy thing is that some dog treats absolutely stink (but the dogs love those the most) and get your fingers smelling all liver and fishy when you dish them out to your buddy. Now you can just load ’em all up at once and dispense them without getting the ol’ stinkfinger. This pet treat shooter is not just for dogs- cats and other animals that want treats can get a shot too. Although your cat will probably ignore the treat for a day or two, just like it ignores you, sorry.
