Repurposed LEGO bricks make up this sleek light that adds fun to any home

A collusion of playfulness, the functionality of a light and the added nostalgia of repurposed LEGO bricks – the Linear LEGO Luminaire ticks all the boxes to be a part of my adult bachelor pad!

Have you ever faced that moment where your love for toys and the need to be an adult clashes? Or when you reach a point that your toys are taking over your home but you have no way to showcase them in a more modern yet functional way? There is one solution here that is sure to fit all my bills! This is the Linear LEGO Luminaire – created originally as a render to poke fun at the existing shortage of aluminium, the LEGO Luminaire and it’s response took the studio by shock!

Designer: ambience + Symphony Lighting

Speaking of the design, the light is made entirely out of repurposed bricks and plates. The light uses an opal diffused LED extrusion to create a diffused illumination that creates a sleek outlet to let the light shine. The light can be used in multiple ways – as a pendent light hanging from the ceiling or even as a standing light that stands tall on the floor.

The lamp has been designed using a symphony of colours that provides a harmonious balance. The lamp is supported by a two-toned, colour matched cables to keep the light in place. This piece is a part of the Symphony range by ambience studio – a range that focuses on strip-based lighting designs. Quirky yet minimalistic, this light creates a kaleidoscope of balanced colour and fun, making it the perfect addition to any home. And for sure, this light adds a bit of fun and promises to become a guaranteed conversation starter every time!

HD projector merges with a ceiling lamp and a built-in smart speaker, creating a space-saving entertainment centre

And now I’m wondering, why didn’t someone think of this before?

Brands have gone crazy innovating and designing projectors: 4k projectors, laser projectors, pocket projectors, short throw projectors, the list is endless. While being through all these variants, I’m not sure why someone didn’t choose the option to embed a projector into a lighting unit in the ceiling so it could project without hindrance? XGIMI for some reason was struck by the idea and the company has churned out the innovative projector, which I’m not sure how convincing it is in performance, but it certainly has me floored by its ceiling-worthy functionality.

Born out of thought above the rest; the XGIMI Magic Lamp is designed to function as a projector, a ceiling light, and a Bluetooth speaker all-in-one. The ceiling-mounted full HD (1,920 x 1,080) DLP projection system has its own 8W Harman Kardon speaker built-in. The smart speaker is compatible with voice assistant, supports Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual X, and helps in creating immersive theatre-esque experiences. Onboard is also a LED room lamp; this dimmable lamp features 176 LED mood lights.

The XGIMI Magic Lamp is currently on sale in China for 7,999 yuan (roughly $1,100). For the ones in Europe willing to shell out their dosh for this interesting ceiling projector; XGIMI is expected to showcase it at the IFA 2022 in Berlin next month. Before you make up your mind, here is a little about the projector’s ability. Capable of a 0.71 transmittance ratio, the Magic Lamp can project a 100-inch picture in 1080p resolution from 1.5 meters away. The projector delivers a very modest 900ANSI lumens of brightness, which should be fine if you have a closed room with little natural light.

XGIMI Magic Lamp for its projection prowess is powered by a MediaTek quad-core processor, and an AI engine supported by 4GB of RAM and 32 gigs of onboard storage. The internal storage ensures you can install a few streaming apps to play content when you want. Even if the XGIMI Magic Lamp is not the best projector, it is a capable multifunction device, which will by virtue of this placement in the ceiling ensure there are no shadows on the screen as people move about in the room!

These hanging lights suspend reminders of Nature’s raw power over your head

Indoor lighting fixtures are often designed in a way that induces feelings of calm or serenity. They’re also often made with luxurious materials and often have very stylish forms. Some even look like designer or art pieces that serve as the visual center of a room. In contrast, this series of light “sculptures” are anything but luxurious but are definitely stylish and beautiful, providing an almost thought-provoking setup hanging above your heads. And it does so utilizing a material that you’d rarely consider as fine material or associate with images of peace, as volcanic rocks are the remnants and reminders of how powerful, destructive, and unpredictable Mother Nature can sometimes be.

Designer: David Pompa

Even among the different kinds of rock, volcanic rock is considered raw and rough, its surface is broken by pores of random sizes and shapes. At the same time, however, it is also one of the most unique byproducts of Nature’s fury, with each of those pores formed by random environmental factors, making each piece and each part of volcanic rock unique and one of a kind. If there was anything that symbolized Nature’s beauty and terror, it would be this kind of rock.

There is also nothing that sparks thinking and interest than contrasting elements arranged in a balanced and beautiful manner, which is exactly what the Meta Parallel Black collection embodies. The completely black fixture contrasts and, in a way, softens the yellow light that comes off the tubes. The volcanic rocks’ rough surface also contrasts and complements the matte aluminum bars that hold the tubes together. Thin black cables suspend the stone and metal assembly, another pair of contrasting and balancing elements.

There are several arrangements of the Meta Parallel black, each with a pair of pillars of volcanic rock light always positioned in parallel to each other. The metal bars that hold the two together, however, bend and fold at right angles, creating an almost abstract arrangement, especially when several Meta Parallel pieces are joined together, all while keeping a sense of symmetry and balance in their formation.

Light and shadow, rough and smooth, rock and metal, parallel and symmetrical, the Meta Parallel brings the balance of contrast to any room. Decorative yet also practical, this beautiful assembly showcases the best of Nature and man, of natural and industrial processes working together to provide not just a lighting fixture but also a very visible representation of the kind of beauty that you can find and make from almost anything, including a rock born out of one of Nature’s most destructive forces.

This sliding ceiling lamp has got us ‘hooked’ on to its flexible, playful, modular design!

Designer Huisu Jo was observings people’s behavior in ‘Dongmyo’ which is a traditional Korean market where everything is used as the ‘most convenient way’. He saw people being resourceful with even scraps and was inspired by the fact that hangers are used as the easiest way to display items. Even in local Indian markets, hangers are used to create a makeshift shelf for the items and sometimes even used to hang lights to show the items laid out below when it is dark. Hook is a lamp that is inspired by these makeshift hacks and has been designed to let users adjust the position of the light according to their needs.

Lights are usually fixed but Hook brings that flexibility to the appliance so it can be aligned with our lifestyle. For example, I want to read in my nook but it is not right under the ceiling light so I have to buy another light or change my reading corner – this may not be convenient in small spaces or for my pocket. But with Hook, I can just slide the light towards my corner and back when I am done. It keeps the floor space free while adding a dynamic element to the otherwise monotonous and boring ceiling lights.

Hook’s aesthetic is minimal and modern. It could have been black and white for a sleek look but I love the pastel blue and bright orange – it adds a pop of color without being too bold and turns the light into a functional accent piece in your home. The clever design also lets you have 2-3 hook lamps so you can disperse or concentrate the light. Simply hook the lamp on to the bar and slide it as per your space and your situation. Hook is modular, flexible, and playful – a refreshing take on hanging ceiling lights!
