Learn How to Solder With This Circuit Board Christmas Tree Kit

Do you know how to solder? I do, but only because I try to repair all my electronics after they break, then end up having to buy new ones anyways after I break them even more. But for those of you who still need some practice (myself included, apparently), there’s this 3D Christmas Tree Soldering Kit (affiliate link). It’s a circuit board Christmas tree you have to assemble and solder yourself, gaining some much-needed experience in the process. And, if you’re like me, set off the smoke alarm at least a half dozen times.

Available in 3- and 7-color models, the STEM kits include everything you need to construct your own 36-light tree, EXCEPT a soldering iron. You have to provide that on your own. And if you don’t have one, DO NOT try to use a lighter and the foil from gum wrappers; you’re not McGyver. Or at least I’m not.

I love fun little DIY projects like this. I feel so accomplished when I complete one, even if they were designed with kids in mind. I might not be a kid in mind, but I am a child at heart. And, okay, my wife says I do have the mind of a 4th grader sometimes. Most of the time, actually.

You Can Control This Family’s Christmas Lights: Twitch Plays Light Op

For many people, Christmas is one of the rare times when they can be with their loved ones. For Ken and Rebecca-Ellen Woods of Fairbanks, Alaska, it’s also an opportunity to connect with virtual visitors from all over the world. Since 2010, they’ve allowed people to control their home’s Christmas lights over the Internet.

Their website has a livestream from the webcam aimed at their house as well as links to toggle groups of lights on and off. Rebecca-Ellen arranges the lights while Ken handles the server that controls the flow of power to the lights. They started with only a single string of lights, adding more and more every year. One thing they took out? The lights inside their house. As you can imagine, having lights flickering at odd hours made it hard for the Woods family to sleep. Fortunately, they don’t have any nearby neighbors, so feel free to play with the switches for as long as you want.

Head to Woods family’s website to join the fun. They don’t charge anything, though they’d appreciate donations to offset their server costs. As of this writing there are 246 people operating the lights, so expect a brief delay before your input is executed. If you’re skeptical, you can send the family an email and they’ll let you have exclusive control of the Christmas tree’s lights for a bit.

Aura Wireless Christmas Lights: Oh Christmas Tree! Thy Lights Are so Untangled

A new lighting system on Kickstarter is going to make decorating Christmas trees much easier. Called Aura, it consists of LED balls that are powered wirelessly by an electromagnetic transmitter, which fits inside or at the base of a Christmas tree.

Aura’s LEDs will last up to 20 years. They come in white or multicolored, while their ball case comes in clear, frosted or crackled. The LED’s Wi-Fi-enabled variant can be toggled, scheduled or set to a timer via a mobile app.

Pledge at least $65 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a 12-pack Aura set as a reward. I hope its inventors can come up with strips of power transmitters so we can be rid of Christmas lights for good.

The Unexpected Magic Of Santa Fe’s Christmastime Lanterns

Take a small paper bag, pour in a couple cups of sand, and stick a tea light in the center: as Christmas lights go, farolitos would seem to rank on the less-impressive side of the scale. There’s an...

Sure, we’d all love the cozy warmth and glowing ambiance of a real fireplace on top of our desks but realistically speaking we’d probably burn the whole place down if we built something like that. So we’re left with a fireplace screen saver in a generic plastic encased LCD monitor. This yule log was not good enough for one crafty Instructables user who turned his screen into a lovely little fireplace complete with a mantle. Check out the “before” shot:

Basically he just bought some pieces of trim molding, cut and painted them, then glued them together to form a frame around his monitor. Then he took it one step further by adding in some red LED Christmas lights BEHIND the monitor to give it a glowing effect. Check out the glowing action below:
