7. Onewheel GT

Our ancestors invented the wheel, Henry Ford put the wheel to great use, and the folks at Onewheel distilled and perfected the idea of motorized transportation. The Onewheel GT basically does what a two or four-wheeled transport device does, but with less. Designed as a motorized skateboard that has just one wheel at its center, the Onewheel GT is perfect for in-city commutes and for leisurely skateboarding. Operated simply by standing on the board and shifting your CG to accelerate or decelerate, the GT comes with a 20mph top speed and up to 32 miles or 51 kilometers of range on a full charge. The GT comes with a bespoke, almost F1 racecar-inspired rounded tire that gives it the handling and maneuverability of a two-wheeler, and you can even choose a treaded tire for riding on uneven terrain like dirt roads. LEDs on the front and the back help you ride comfortably at night, while griptape-lined concave footpads make sure you’re always in control. Speaking of control, each Onewheel GT also pairs along with the Onewheel smartphone app that lets you customize the way your board rides, check your battery status, connect with friends and more.

The Layover is travel-friendly and packs down to the size of your fists. It’s 35% lighter than a pair of Nike Free shoes. You can stuff it in the corner of your suitcase, or clip it onto your backpack, and completely forget its presence! Stuffing the blanket into the attached stuff sack that comes along with it, COULD have been an issue, if the designers hadn’t added 3″ of extra material for easy grip and stuffing.

10. Omega Graphene Integrated Pants

Levi Strauss was credited with inventing denim as a fabric for miners and labourers who needed clothes that could withstand rigorous work without scraping or tearing. Over a hundred years later, denim jeans are still the most popular form of bottomwear… but are they still the most durable? Not quite. Meet the OMEGA pants – full-length pants that are made from actual graphene fabric. Not only are they hundreds of times stronger than denim, they’re practically tear-proof and waterproof, have incredible breathability and thermoregulation properties, are anti-bacterial, and come witha 4-way stretch that gives you more maneuverability to do everything from going to work or climbing mountains. With a design that has the best of all worlds, the OMEGA pants look rather stylish, but also put performance on a pedestal. The pants come with an abundance of pockets, lined with zippers that keep them waterproof. The graphene fabric is abrasion-resistant, protecting itself (and you) from damage, while taped seams ensure the pants never rip or tear. The cloth has a 4-way stretch, is windproof and waterproof, blocks UV light, repels stains, and prevents bacteria growth. My favorite part? The zippers around the knees that let you turn the full-pants into shorts!

This modular single-person car adapts to changing lifestyle, giving increased value to your vehicle

Over a lifetime our personality is molded depending on the lifestyle and the circumstances around us. But when we bring home a car, it stays virtually unchanged, barring some superficial modifications from the after-market accessories and tuning customizations. What if our four-wheeler could also have a dynamic persona that could morph in a jiffy depending on our needs? A vehicle that is ultra-modular at the core right at the time of purchase?

This is CMPN concept by Sungguk Park, who mustered up the compact single-person vehicle as a part of the BA Thesis project. For a debut project, the designer has done a phenomenal job of putting together a modular vehicle that’s compact, is ideal for solo city commuters and doesn’t stop you from exploring the outskirts for an adventure trip on the weekend. The electric car employs the modular structure on the exterior as well as interior to suit the user’s needs – much like your wardrobe where you have the option to go with the flow. The ability to replace and even recycle modules without much hassle is good for the longevity of use of the vehicle – thereby helping in staying abreast with the greater goal of a sustainable future.

According to Sungguk, mobility could be a companion in the process of change in a person’s life. Hence, CMPN is designed keeping in mind users’ changing tastes. Each module is made up of recyclable materials and is more than enough for single people to use every inch of the space efficiently. On the inside, there are no distinct lines between the cargo space and interior space which increases the flexibility of use. When needed the seat can be pushed back to make more space for extra luggage or daily objects. There are charging ports, a modular bookshelf, coffee holder and door pockets to keep all the essentials.

The EV can be controlled with mobile devices too and when in a parked position on the side of a beautiful beach, the steering wheel conceals in the dashboard which can then be used as a full-sized desk. Dashboard cabinets act as rails to install modules such as bookshelves or drawers. On the outside, the uniformity of design means more possibility of adding the desired modules to the front or back. For example, a skateboarder can configure the rear module to have MUV-like space for carrying skateboard, bags and other things. While a professional can have modules in place to make more use of the space on the interior while keeping the exterior minimal. Everything on the CMPN can be configured via the compatible app – something that the automotive future will cherish in a decade’s time!

The Mini CarSharing concept shows how transportation must evolve along with ever-changing cities

The Mini Cooper is ostensibly a proud, Brit-made car designed for the cities… but as cities grow larger, and a growing population adds more pressure on resources, roads, and other infrastructure, transportation needs to evolve. Daniel Pokorný’s Mini City CarSharing concept shows how the tiny humble hatchback can evolve to become an icon of urban commuting.

The goal was to create a fully electric vehicle ideal for car-sharing fleets that could be easily cleaned after every use. The design integrates Mini’s values, combining a minimalist and practical interior with an exterior that highlights contemporary automotive design. Outwardly, it’s unmistakably a Mini. Aside from the fact that the Mini logo is emblazoned across the front, the car boasts of Mini-esque proportions, the signature round headlights, and a design that’s both comfortable yet compact.

The compact car sports large windows to make up for its small size, these quirky proportions lend to the car’s ‘cute’ demeanor, while also providing a nice view to the passengers on the inside. The CarSharing concept comes with an incredibly short bonnet, characterized further by a large air-intake beneath it. Daniel calls this a cognitive element that communicates the electrified nature of the car. With a minimal front overhang, the car’s front is finally made complete with two ring-shaped headlights divided by thin LED stripes, and the Mini logo.

The two-seater hatchback comes with ample boot space for luggage, making it perfect for long commutes or even journeys to and from the airport/station. The rear hatch opens up in two parts, quite like the Mini Rocketman Concept from a decade ago, giving you easy access to the back to add or remove heavy bags. The top even comes with a fin that reads ShareNow, making the car instantly identifiable from a distance… and the roof boasts a transparent design, supported by pillars that resemble the Union Jack, once again hinting at the car’s British origins.

The car’s dashboard is incredibly minimal, with a two-spoke steering wheel, a small digital instrument cluster, and a smartphone dock attached to it. The car immediately recognizes the user based on the smartphone, working almost like an authentication device that then allows the car to customize its settings according to your preferences. Additionally, since the vehicle’s more suited for constant use (given its ride-sharing nature), it features a removable/replaceable battery, so the car doesn’t need any off-time for charging.

This transforming furniture goes from office setup to home chair by easily unzipping the sides!

Remember the hours we spent commuting every day – to the office, to a favorite restaurant or just to see our much-loved sunset spot? Living in Bombay, my memory of trains is a sensory assault – the people standing next to you, the waft of that balmy air as it wedges it was through the bodies, the cacophony of friends greeting each other, railway public service announcements, and the hawkers selling an assortment of objects. Given the year and a half of living in the isolation and quiet of my home furniture, I don’t think I can step into a train without getting shivers. To give you the feeling of working from the office while working from home, designer Andrew Mangelsdorf created the Commute chair.

The name commute chair might give you the idea that it helps you recreate the journey (maybe it’s a variation of floo powder that transports you while sitting in place), it literally helps create a barrier between your home and workspace. Designing a home office is a luxury not everyone can afford – we often convert our bedroom into the workroom and the dining table into a desk for the day. Commute lets you mentally transform yourself by pulling up the partitions of this ingenious chair. The chair also comes with multiple accessories like a swiveling tabletop and a table light – all integrated to create the perfect desk setup in the form of one simple chair. The chair also has USB ports and holds deep pockets to hold all your knick-knacks that you need during work. The chair’s aesthetics are minimal – fitting into your home, while the beige inner fabric acts as a professional backdrop to those endless Zoom calls.

The transforming nature of the chair comes from the metal zipper that holds the chair’s privacy barriers up. Open up the zip – either from one side only or from both sides and fold the excess over the metal arm, creating an impromptu armrest. The commute chair makes commuting from work to home that simple.

Be it your work time or time to relax, we all need a barrier from distractions that surround us. Keeping this in mind, the commute chair becomes essential for your homes even when the pandemic is over – and life, as we know it, returns to the normal we were used to. Personally, I would love to have the commute chair as a reading nook, use the sides to take away any distractions, and lose myself in the wonderful world of books!

Mercedes-Benz’ new electric scooter has a mileage of over 3100 miles – hello zero emissions!

As we continue to move towards a cleaner and sustainable future, automakers around the world are doing their best to switch over to electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has spent the past couple of years developing electric mobility concepts and it has finally unveiled its own fully-electric scooter which accelerates our zero-emissions journey – at least for short distances and especially for city dwellers. Longevity is at the core of this e-scooter, it uses high-quality components and materials to give the user a mileage of over 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) which allows for more freedom when it comes to micro-mobility solutions.

Mercedes-Benz has launched this EV in collaboration with a Swiss scooter specialist, Micro, to make this e-scooter sleek, strong, and efficient. It features an electric motor with a maximum 500 W power which allows the scooter to accelerate to a speed 20 km/h (permitted in Germany) while the 7.8 Ah battery gives a range of up to 25 kilometers. This lets users travel with speed, comfort, and security. The kickboard is wide enough to have plenty of room for both feel and has a non-slip coating for more stability. The e-scooter has front + rear suspension and comes with 20 cm diameter rubber wheels that effortlessly handle uneven surfaces like cobblestones making it ideal for short urban commutes.

The electric scooter also features a retractable steering column that is adjustable to the rider’s height making it a popular option in the market. The handlebars are ergonomically designed with the accelerator on the right and brake on the left as well as an integrated bell. It has a rear drum brake and a foot brake on the protective plate for added riding security. The compact scooter also includes front and rear lights along with the side reflectors so the user can ride it in traffic at any time of the day. There is a display in the center that shows the speed, battery level, and riding mode – this is also all synced to the user’s mobile app for the electric scooter.

The best part is that you can fold the Mercedes-Benz e-scooter using a simple mechanism operated with just a press of the foot. To make it more streamlined and easy to carry, the handlebars also fold down. The e-scooter weighs around 29 lbs (13.5 kg) making it portable and convenient. Let’s kickstart our zero-emissions journey with a touch of a luxury automaker!

Microsoft thinks remote workers need a ‘virtual commute’

This Dyson-inspired e-scooter can turn you into an electric vehicle ‘fan’

Dyson is hands down one of the most innovative companies out there. Before Dyson, did you ever follow any company that made vacuums on Instagram? It single-handedly turned vacuums into a status symbol and then ventured into playing the tech fairy godmother while transforming all the other pumpkin household appliances. Dyson has inspired many designers to adapt their style and create some amazing concepts, our recent favorite is the Dyson Moovo – an electric scooter modeled after their signature product designs featuring clean lines.

Electric scooters are soon going to become a preferred mode of transport for city commuters as they are environmentally friendly and easier on the pocket than a Tesla. Moovo’s design incorporates Dyson’s sleek and simplified aesthetics with their powerful engineering into an efficient electric scooter that you would be proud to own. The handlebar integrates the workings of a CPU that lets you control certain features of the scooter through its display like folding the handlebar or visualizing your trip’s data. The screen is anti-reflective so that you can look at the data under any light condition when outside. It features a 300W brushless motor in the front hub with a drum brake in the rear wheel and translucent mudguards to reduce visual weight on both ends. There is an easy control for the throttle along with a brake lever that is also included in the handlebar. Soft plugs guard the ends of the handlebar and absorb impact.

You can also adjust the height according to the rider and the anti-slip surface ensures their comfort + safety. Lock and unlock your scooter with your fingerprint and we won’t be surprised if this moves towards facial recognition in the future. The base features a sliding lock mechanism to detach the battery when needed and a sliding stand to make it stay upright effortlessly. The Dyson Moovo has the power to convert many people into electric scooter fans just as they turned many adults into Monica Gellers who love to clean!

Be socially distant and still use public transport with this driverless tram!

Is anyone else feeling trapped because they are scared to use public transport? I don’t have a car because I have lived in a city all my life, so I could get everywhere using public transport but now with the pandemic going on I have been only going to places that are at a walkable distance and that really limits me. A design studio understood this problem and took it upon themselves to come up with an innovative solution for a crowded city like Hong kong – how can you make people comfortable with public transport again?

Answer: Island! This is a conceptual a double-decker driverless tram designed for the city of Hong Kong to be used in the post-pandemic era. Island is an exemplary blend of industrial design, transportation design, public design, urban mobility, and sustainability. Using public transport is crucial to keep pollution levels low especially when the virus going around attacks your respiratory system first. Making sure that public transport facilitates social distancing was also given the utmost importance during the design process. “We wanted to reimagine public transport in the post-COVID era from a prevention perspective. Especially in the densely populated city of Hong Kong, where social distancing is hard to achieve. The idea of designing a tram is no coincidence: trams are one of the city’s landmarks and the tramways celebrate their 115th anniversary this year. The concept of social distancing, which limits people’s freedom to move and interact became the design challenge and focal point for the new concept,” says the design team as they explained the process and challenges.

The driverless technology optimizes the interior space of the tram, making it easier to manage travel times and increase onboard safety. The design was named Island as the interior of the tram hosts large circular benches that let passengers practice social distancing and sit facing outwards in a radial pattern. The charcoal black walls and wooden floors add a luxurious touch that makes you want to use the public tram and feel comfortable while doing so. Its exterior aesthetic is inspired by the urban landscape of the iconic city that is known for its tall glass buildings. The curved windows and domed top allow plenty of natural light inside during the day while giving an unobstructed glimpse of the views at night while large vertical LEDs provide visibility in all weather conditions. It includes a retractable connector for rapid charging at tram stops. Even the stops have been created to replicate the minimal design with sleek and clean lines. It has been kept open on both sides to allow passengers to maintain more distance, move freely, and have natural ventilation for a healthier environment. Let’s rethink public spaces and use design to make them great (and safe) again!

Segway’s newest flat-pack e-scooter is the answer for sustainable city-commute

When life as we used to know it resumes, the one thing I wish would not change from the pandemic time period is having lesser street traffic. If you live in a city, you can feel the difference in the air, clarity of the sky, reduced noise, and the fact that you aren’t stressed about driving on congested streets! It has shown us that reducing the number of vehicles on the street has a positive impact on our environment which is also better for our health. Realistically, we can’t keep vehicles off the roads but what we can do is adopt energy-efficient alternatives like Segway’s Ninebot KickScooter Air T15 – easier for your commute and easier on the planet!

This award-winning e-scooter was designed keeping in mind the needs of someone commuting daily in a city. Thus it was made portable, lightweight and since it literally folds in half, it is an extremely convenient option. Segway is already a global leader in electric mobility and they are not only upping their tech but also their design game with this scooter. The Ninebot KickScooter Air T15 is seamless, compact, and minimal in its form. The Air T15 team spent over SIX years (nearly 12,500 hours) perfecting its ergonomic design using the lightest yet the most durable material for a sleek and futuristic aesthetic without compromising on reliability and power.

With one click you can fold the scooter into half and the 6-axis sensor embedded in the dashboard will detect the operation mode which will help to turn the power off automatically. Once folded, you can drag it smoothly like a suitcase with wheels. The body is created using an aluminum-magnesium alloy to keep it lightweight yet strong enough to keep up with its performance needs. The material used makes the scooter splash-proof, corrosion-resistant,  and eco-friendly. One of the features that really make it stand out in terms of being energy efficient is the regenerative braking system that turns your e-scooter into a vehicle powered by electricity by using the recycled energy from riding. The wheels are able to transform the energy that is captured during braking into power and to store it in the integrated lithium battery pack.

We love the attention to detail that the design team has showcased through every element in the scooter. The retractable handlebars cooperate with the smooth, linear design, and the use of silica to make them ensure comfort. It also features a bezel-less monitoring dashboard that is intuitive to use and elevates your commute experience with its integrated design. Continuing on the road to better the UI and UX, the team placed the DIP switches on the rear fender for users to power on/off, control the light, and change the riding modes with ease. For a little fun element, the LED light bar on the front has different color settings while adding functionality to the overall design.

Choose from four riding modes based on your needs and environment – Pedestrian Mode, Energy-saving Mode, Standard Mode and Sport Mode with a preset speed limit of 3.7 mph (6 km/h), 6.2 mph (10 km/h), 9.3 mph (15 km/h), and 12.4 mph (20 km/h) respectively. Keeping with the times, Segway’s Ninebot KickScooter Air T15 comes with its own app that is available on iOS and Android with the integration of Bluetooth connectivity, customize LED ambient light colors, live riding stats dashboard, and more. With a scooter this smooth and smart, you can adapt to environmentally-friendly commuting with ease and actually make your journey to sustainable living fun!
