Unique tweezer design uses springs to let you easily, painlessly, and safely remove ear hair

Designed to work partly like a pair of tweezers, but also like a tiny epilator that easily grabs and plucks hair, the Nikken Tweezer is so easy to use that you can use it by yourself without any assistance.

The unique pair of tweezers work safely, eliminating the need to go to a hairdresser, or take a pair of scissors to try and groom yourself on your own. They’re easy to operate, and work equally well with ear or nose hairs. Unlike scissors, which are incredibly unsafe when used by yourself, or regular tweezers, which are great at plucking hair that you see, but hard when it’s hair you can’t see, Nikken’s Ear Hair Tweezers sport a key difference. The tweezer’s ends have a tiny spring in between that grabs onto any hair that gets caught in the spring’s spirals, letting you easily grasp multiple small hairs and pull them at once.

On the left: Common tweezers catch hair with one side. On the right: NIKKEN catches ear hair by multiple sides of springs.

The use of a spring is an incredibly clever design detail as it maximizes your gripping area, compared to a regular tweezer. The spring’s spiral shape works in 360°, catching multiple hairs at the same time to do a much more efficient job. Besides, the spring used in Nikken’s tweezers isn’t just a regular spring. Unlike your average spring that sports a round cross-section, Nikken’s spring has a square cross-section, allowing it to hold hairs tighter so they don’t slip out of the tweezer’s grip while pulling. In theory, the tweezers work equally well with tiny hairs in the nose as well as with eyebrow hair too.

The Nikken Tweezer’s design goes further to facilitate easy and safe use. It comes with blunt, rounded ends that are safer against skin, and to ensure that there’s no stray metal edge pointing out, the spring’s spot-welded to the tweezer, giving it a clean, smooth finish around the welding spots. The entire tweezer is also made from stainless steel, ensuring it doesn’t ever catch rust or lose its finish. Using the Nikken Tweezers is easy, intuitive, and faster than using regular tweezers or a scissor, and is much more painless than waxing your ear hair out like in those weirdly viral Instagram and Tik-Tok videos. Once you’re done, the tweezers can easily be cleaned with water and soap, or even sterilized in a pot of hot water before it’s ready to be used again.

Sleek electric q-tip gently cleans out the wax from inside your ear

I’ll just confess over here that I’m terrified of using a Q-tip. The last time I tried using one was back in college – I could feel like my ear needed cleaning, so I picked an earbud up and carefully went at it. I ended up pushing the wax further into my canal, and suddenly I could barely hear out that ear because of the wax blockage. A doctor finally helped me out, and told me something I remember to this day. That Q-tip isn’t meant for in-ear usage. It’s a convenient thing everyone takes for granted, but if you ever pick up a box and actually read the instructions, it specifically states that the Q-tip’s design is made for cleaning AROUND the ear, and not inside it.

WAXOFF takes a much more precise and no-nonsense approach to ear-cleaning. No larger than an electric toothbrush, the WAXOFF is an electric Q-tip that uses a rotating head with a helical pattern that gently scoops and pushes out any wax inside your ear, instead of accidentally pushing it in. Designed for self-use, the WAXOFF is a personal hygiene device that can be used without external supervision. It rotates at a constant speed in one direction, relying on the helical channels to gather and push out any ear-wax. The head’s flexible, soft design allows it to gently slide into any ear, and its simple wax-removal technique is practically foolproof. WAXOFF’s rotating head is replaceable, and can be ejected and swapped out using two push-buttons on the top of the handle. Plus, a single button with the WAXOFF branding lets you toggle it on or off, and a USB-C port on the back lets you charge the device when its battery runs low.

This smart ear inspection gadget uses AI to reduce diagnostic errors by 50%

Ear infections are the second most common illness to be diagnosed in children and also the one with a 50% error rate in diagnosis according to multiple studies including one from the Centre for Disease Control. Designer Joe Slatter wanted to do something to reduce the burden of The Global Burden of Diseases where ear infections rank 5th, so he created Oto!

Most ear examination tools have cameras but Oto, a conceptual medical device, comes with AI camera attachment that helps to minimize diagnostic errors. If the diagnosis is incorrect (something that happens often with ear infections) then the patient can develop antibody resistance when it’s not needed. Because of the AI support, healthcare professionals can record and upload media onto electronic health records. The AI diagnostic support provides precise readings and assists the doctor in getting more accurate results. The AI camera attachment encourages patient interaction while following social distance guidelines as much as possible. Oto features manual focus as well as automatic and comes with a charging base.

Oto doesn’t compromise on its form or function, it is ergonomic and capable of bettering the health diagnosis overall. “Low-fidelity models informed a form that provides a balance of comfort, control, and precision. Mid-fidelity prototypes refined the internal structures and mechanisms before producing an aesthetic model for further testing,” says the designer about the extensive prototyping process to get Oto’s form right. Apart from being one of the smartest medical ear examination devices, Oto is also the sleekest!

This electric q-tip gently cleans the wax from inside your ear

No larger than the size of an electric toothbrush, the Clean focuses on personal hygiene by allowing you to clear your ear canals of dirt and wax. The handheld device comes with a design that allows you to use it on your own, without external supervision. Its silicone body is soft, malleable, non-toxic, and easy to clean, while the rotating head at its tip features a helical pattern that rotates to gently push out any wax inside your ear without hurting you.

The Clean’s unique design makes it more effective than a q-tip. Its rotating head burrows wax away and out of the canal, and makes sure you never accidentally push wax INTO your ear… all while being incredibly easy to clean once used. You can take a wet-wipe to it or even use hot water to sterilize the tip, allowing you to use it multiple times, unlike cotton buds which need to be thrown away after a single use.
