Polestar-inspired skateboard with carbon fiber body & translucent aesthetics is made for Gen-Z

Thanks to its versatility, the electric skateboard has become an important personal commuter in urban settings. There are countless electric skateboard options out there that score well for their top speed, load capacity, or the kind of material used. The ones by Backfire, Swagtron, Meepo, or Skatebolt. But the prospect of a Polestar branded skateboard brings a new dimension to the equation.

The inspiration for this concept comes from the many concept skateboard designs that have their own USP. Since Polestar is the rising star in the EV car market with a 125 percent rise in electric car sales in the first half of 2022, the concept artist’s association of the skateboard with the brand makes complete sense.

As per Cheng, the project is personal work and teaching – made as an example for the design workshop at Tatung University 2022. The core idea is to teach the students how to visualize a concept design with 3D modeling.

The electric skateboard gets a lightweight carbon frame in matte colors with contrasting wheels and a platform with perforations for a better grip with any pair of shoes. This will interest skateboarders who like to perform a lot of tricks. Underneath lies the battery which provides the assisted power on inclines or difficult terrain. While the skateboard deck carries a minimalist look, the rear has all multiple ports for charging like the lightning port and USB.

What kind of runtime one can expect from the skateboard is cloaked in mystery, but then, this is just a concept. As seen in some of the renders, the skateboard gives off a translucent vibe which will attract Gen-Z users. Whether it can compete with options like the Behemoth’s all-terrain e-board is unclear, but assessing the ride height and other design cues, this one is tailored for the metropolis.

Just lean forward and this electric skateboard uses in-wheel motors and imu sensors to move for you

I’ve never had a knack for skateboarding, let alone any form of transportation that replaces my feet with tiny wheels. The combination of balancing my two feet on a ten-inch wide board and also kicking off the ground to move forward has never clicked. Nowadays, electric scooters make it easier to remain balanced and they’re making a major comeback in a lot of popular cities and electric skateboards might be on deck. For instance, VLND Design’s electric skateboard concept PLMM, which utilizes the user’s balance for ground movement, relies on intuitive usability so even I could use it.

PLMM accelerates, decelerates, moves in reverse, and changes direction according to the leaning tilt of the rider. By simply leaning forward, PLMM users accelerate the board, and to move backward, riders can slightly lean back and the skateboard adjusts accordingly. The designers wanted to make a skateboard that everyone found easy to use, so the built-in mechanics of the skateboard were manufactured with intuitive motion in mind. Four in-wheel motors equip PLMM with possible speeds up to 25 MPH and direct power that otherwise would come from a conventional vehicle’s gas engine.

In addition to PLMM’s in-wheel motors, the skateboard houses gyroscope and IMU sensors which work to measure the angle of the board’s center of gravity 1,000 times to the second, providing each rider with a controlled sense of balance for smooth riding. Vlnd Design produced PLMM so that moving is easy to both control and navigate – extra leaning is never required, instead riders only have to lean forward ever so slightly for the skateboard’s sensors to register movement. The insides of the PLMM electric skateboard are multilayered with added mechanical protection so that each ride feels effortless and each tilt from the rider will be detected by the integrated sensors even after consistent and long-term use.

I’ve only used a standing electric scooter once and while moving as fast as some of the cars I rode next to was… an experience, the mechanics of the scooter were difficult to understand and made the ride last much longer than expected. Intuitive usability is everything when it comes to the design of electric transportation vehicles like scooters and skateboards. That’s why with Vlnd Design’s PLMM, all you have to do is lean back and let the ride take you away.

Boosted Board isn't the first powered skateboard to grace these pages, but it is the lightest. In its current prototype form, it weighs just 12 pounds, thanks to a high-end Loaded Vanguard longboard, 2,000W brushless electric motor, 100W/h Lithium polymer battery pack and regenerative braking and drivetrain bits. That hardware will move you along at up to 20mph, provide about six miles of range and tackle up to a 15 percent grade. The company is also evaluating different battery chemistries and cell sizes for folks looking for longer range. We were told that the board is capable of much higher speeds, but it's been limited for safety reasons. However, that reservoir of power is put to good use when rolling uphill, as the Boosted Board's got some custom firmware that aims to make cruising up inclines feel the same as riding on flats. Adjusting the speed is accomplished through a custom handheld, thumb-operated throttle that's still in development.

We got to lay our hands (and feet) on one today in San Francisco, and we spoke with Boosted Board's builders, too. The board's lightweight design, with the battery pack and motor components nestled at either end, is quite different from other electric decks we've seen with a massive power pack centered underneath. This design is made possible by that power-dense brushless motor, and it allows the Boosted Board to maintain the flexible feel that regular longboarders know and love. For now, the drivetrain and components are left exposed (as you can see in our gallery) but a more integrated design will go to the Kickstarters who pledged the $1,200 needed to get one when they start shipping next May. We spotted the dudes behind the ZBoard at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier this week, but we weren't content to just ride the electric skateboard up and down the halls of Pier 94. We asked them to take a walk with us to Washington Square Park so we could take the board for a spin in a more realistic setting -- also, any excuse to skip out of work a bit earlier to go skating in the park on a sunny Friday afternoon is hard to turn down. We initially asked them to meet us at one of New York City's many skate parks, but they balked at the suggestion -- after all, it's more of a commuting board than anything else. It's big and fairly heavy, so attempting to go vert with the thing is pretty much out -- grinding and kickflips are likely off the table, too.

Co-creator Geoff Larson told us he managed to get the thing up on two wheels, but that's about the limit of trickery at the moment -- we're sure that'll change pretty quickly, as soon as more boards make their way into the hands of the public. In the meantime, the ZBoard is all about getting around, giving you about 10 miles on a single charge. Larson added that one skater said he planned to use his ZBoard to make the long trip to the skatepark and back, carrying his manual board along for the ride.
