DIY 3D Printable Mecha and Sci-Fi Face Masks: Man & Machine, Sanding Extreme

You wouldn’t download a mech, but you would and you can download a mecha’s mask. It’s all thanks to designers like Etsy seller SeberdrA, who offers STL files of masks and other facial cosplay accessories inspired by popular mecha, cyborgs, and other anime, video games, and science fiction characters. Here’s a 3D printed sample from Gundam fan Mecha Gaikotsu:

SeberdrA has a good variety of well-made designs. Here are my favorites from their selection:

As with many 3D printed projects, you’ll have to do a bit of trial and error when printing these designs, especially if you want to wear them. Here’s Mecha Gaikotsu’s video about his experience with one of the mecha masks:

Take an orbital elevator to SeberdrA’s Etsy shop to snag the designs. They usually go for around $20 to $24 (USD) each.

Oppo’s Evangelion phone is surprisingly faithful to the anime

Once in a while, Neon Genesis Evangelion fans get giddy over a special edition phone (or camera) made just for them, and with 2020 marking the 25th anniversary of the anime (not to mention the upcoming movie Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time), t...

Oppo’s Reno Ace 2 has the world’s fastest wireless charging (for now)

While we apparently have 30W wireless charging to look forward to on OnePlus’ next flagship phone, its sister company Oppo pulled a cheeky move earlier today by offering something more appealing. The freshly-announced Reno Ace 2 is the world’s first...

This Japanese VR arcade put me inside ‘Mario Kart’

HolyOOPS Geeky Metal Keycaps: The Bees’ Keys

If you’re looking for a way to customize your computer keyboard, check out HolyOOPS. Based in China, HolyOOPS makes CNC-machined keycaps out of aluminum or titanium. They feature symbols or characters from anime, comics and at least one TV series. Which is probably why they’re a bit low key.

According to the group-buying service Massdrop, which posted all but one of the images below, HolyOOPS’ keycaps are compatible with Cherry MX switches.

HolyOOPS has a Taobao shop where it sells its aluminum keycaps for between ¥160 (~$26 USD) to ¥259 (~$42 USD) each and its titanium keycaps for ¥300 (~$49 USD) each. However, I don’t know if HolyOOPS accepts international orders or how much it’ll set you back for the already pricey accessories. Thankfully as of this writing you can sign up with Massdrop to get the aluminum keycaps for about $28 each. GeekKeys also has the fist and the Bleach mask design for $30 each. HolyOOPS has also posted group buys on Geekhack a few times.

LEGO Evangelion Unit-01: You Can (Not) Top This

We’ve seen the father of this LEGO mech hybrid; now it’s time to meet its mother. It’s a scale model of Evangelion Unit-01 from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Eva Launch!

Japanese LEGO enthusiast Moko says it took him three years to complete this masterpiece. The figure stands nearly 4′ tall and weighs almost 21lbs. Its torso is just a tad too bulky, but honestly I didn’t think you could make something this slim and articulated using LEGO pieces. It even has proper joints! Plus the colors are spot on.

Pentax shows NERV, flashes Japan-only Evangelion-flavored Q10s

Pentax parades Evangelionflavored Q10s

We've seen Neon Genesis Evangelion-branded devices for quite awhile now, and as a testament to the garish-hued series' longevity, Pentax has announced a special edition, show-themed Q10 series of its own. It'll release a mere 1,500 of the models in Evangelion heroine shades, starting with the Eva-01 model shown above at a price of 59,800 Yen ($660 or so). Besides showing your love for '90s anime, that sum will get you a 12.4-megapixel, mirrorless interchangeable shooter capable of Full HD video, while filling out the already-bounteous Q10 color choices from the hue-loving outfit. Stateside fans of the show will likely be disappointed though -- it'll only be sold in Japan, starting in April. Check the source to see the other colors.
