The PhonePad turns your smartphone into a laptop with a 15.6″ touchscreen display

You’ve obviously heard the analogy of your smartphone being a computer you can fit into your pocket. Smartphones have the same components most tablets and laptops have. They connect to the internet, have powerful processors, can multitask, and with their variety of apps, allow you to do everything you possibly could on a laptop… the only distinction being they’re small enough to slide into your pockets. While that’s definitely an achievement, the smartphone’s small size actually is what prevents it from being a full-fledged replacement to your computer. You can’t really enjoy movies on a 5-inch screen, or efficiently make presentations, or read through long documents – these are places where a larger display just helps. The PhonePad gives your smartphone that larger display… and much more.

Designed as a sleek, wired display that’s compatible with any smartphone, tablet, or even laptop, the PhonePad gives you an instant FullHD external display measuring at 15.6-inches, complete with a touchscreen surface. Plug the PhonePad into your smartphone and it instantly scales it up. You can operate your phone using PhonePad’s touchscreen, and enjoy the benefit of a larger display, perfect for watching Netflix or playing Fortnite (or Among Us, whichever suits you). However, the true potential of the PhonePad is in turning your smartphone into a laptop. Given that your iPhone or Android phone already has the processing power and the app-store to let you do everything from attending meetings to typing mails, making spreadsheets, communicating on Slack, and sharing files, the PhonePad completes the laptop experience by giving you a larger screen, along with multiple ports, a headphone jack, and a powerful set of speakers! Just hook the PhonePad up using a USB cable and you have a much larger, latency-free display. You can even hook a wireless keyboard and mouse to your phone and you literally have a laptop running a mobile OS!

Moreover, if you’re a hardcore laptop user, the PhonePad simply upgrades your workflow by giving you a secondary display. Connect it to your laptop and you instantly have a multi-window setup that you can use for work, entertainment, gaming, or a combination of the previous 3. The PhonePad measures a mere 0.2 inches and weighs 0.95 lbs, allowing you to slip it right into your bag or under your arm and carry it wherever you go. It comes with its own cover too that doubles as a stand, allowing you to use the PhonePad in both landscape and portrait orientations! Its universal compatibility makes it even better, giving you the ability to connect it to almost all your devices that support external displays… like your smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, Nintendo Switch, or even your DSLR! Yeah, you heard me!

Google PixelBloc Modular Power-bank lets you stack up external chargers for a bigger battery!

The idea behind the PixelBloc concept is pretty simple. Stack multiple power-banks together and make yourself a massive power-bank with a higher battery-capacity… or just separate them into smaller power-banks that you can use to charge multiple devices at the same time. The PixelBloc’s modular nature allows you to use it any way you see fit, and gives you a flexibility that wasn’t previously known in the external-charger industry.

The PixelBloc is comprised of multiple 2500mAh battery-units that connect together using a USB-C port system. The main bloc, which sits at its base, comes with a USB-C port and two USB-A ports, while subsequent blocs only house the USB-C ports. This means the modules need to be plugged into the main bloc to charge them, creating a foolproof system, and the charger is smart enough to recognize them when they’re plugged in together. The PixelBloc uses sequential charging and discharging, which means when the entire unit is assembled, the main bloc is always recharged first (so you always know which bloc to use when you’re low on power) after which subsequent bloc-units get recharged. When you’re using the entire power-bank to juice up your device, power is pulled from the last bloc first, discharging it from the back to the front and maintaining the system so you’re never left with arbitrarily charged individual bloc-units.

To ensure each bloc is plugged in correctly, the individual power-bricks come with a switch that helps lock the units in place, and an LED to let you know they’re all connected. Whether you’re charging a single device or multiple ones, the PixelBloc has you covered. You can share individual bloc-units with friends too, or carry just as many blocs as you need instead of carrying the entire brick with you. The power-bank has been a singular product in both form and function, with limited capabilities. By turning it modular, the Google PixelBloc gives it an innovative touch (a lot like Project Ara!) and frees it from its boring monolithic form!

The Mother Of All Portable Batteries Can Charge Your iPhone 7 Over 61 Times

If you’re going to buy a relatively bulky power supply, why not go for one with a capacity so huge it could charge your iPhone 7 over 61 times? That’s exactly what the River Mobile Power station is capable of, thanks to its massive 116,000 mAh capacity. Not only does it have a huge capacity, it can also output up to 500W from a array of ports, allowing you to power up to 11 devices simultaneously. What ports does it carry?

(2) USB Quickcharge 2.0, (2) USB, (2) USB Type C, (2) AC Outlets, (2) DC Outlets, and (1) 12V Car Port

The thing can power a refrigerator for 10+ hours, for crying out loud. It’s also waterproof and weather proof, withstanding temperatures of -4° to 140° F, making it an ideal camping companion. Also, the battery management system is brilliant:

It’s a “smart” system, that allows RIVER to 1) automatically adjust the power output to the Wattage your device needs, 2) regulate temperature so devices don’t shut down by starting a fan if too hot, and informing you if it’s too cold, and 3) connect individually to each of the 11 output ports so if one were to short circuit or max-out the other 10 would continue charging.

Weighing in at a hefty 11lbs (5kg), it’s definitely not light weight but still isn’t so heavy as to not be portable.

Prices start with a $459 Early Bird pledge and are expected to go up to $699 retail. Shipping starts in June 2017.

WD’s G-Drive USB-C adds storage and power to your laptop

Apple's courageous decision to equip the MacBook with just one USB-C port for charging and external storage forced owners to carry a pricey dongle if they wanted to do both at once. If you're in that camp, or would rather not sacrifice a port on your...

Pokit It Good

Pages have been written about savvy Smartphones and how little their batteries last. Portable charger adaptors are a great answer, but they too need to be well designed to compliment the sleekness of the Smartphones. The Pokit fits in here somewhere … it is an integrated phone charger-adaptor, external battery and storage pocket that is compact and portable.

The one clever feature is that the USB cable sealed inside the fabric pocket can be connected to charge the smart device. No wonder it snapped the Red Dot Award: Design Concept this year!

JUMPR is an External Battery That Can Even Jump Start Your Car

Jumpr External Battery

If you had to choose between JUMPR and another portable external battery, then you should choose JUMPR all the way. Aside from providing some back-up power to your mobile devices when you need it the most, the JUMPR is even powerful enough to jump start your car! So put away those cables for a moment and forget calling a friend for help; with the JUMPR in your dash, your car will be up and running in no time.

Automobiles and motorycles run on 12 Volts. The JUMPR provides 12 Volts of power at peak 300 Amps to ensure that your dead automobile or motorycle battery can be brought back to life. 300 Amps is enough to jumpstart almost all 4-Cylinder and 6-Cylinder engines as well as possibly enough to jump start more depending on type of model.

JUMPR uses lithium polymer battery cells that make it thinner and lighter than most portable power banks. Heck, it only weighs 7 ounces, which makes what it can do all the more impressive.

The JUMPR is available for pre-order from Juno’s website for $89.99.

TYLT PowerPlant External Battery Pack: Never Run out of Juice Again

No matter what smartphone you have, at some point in time, even if you’ve got a 2,300 mAh battery, you’ll end up needing a juice up. While there are plenty of battery cases available, these kinds of products quickly become obsolete once the format of your smartphone changes. That’s one of the reasons why having an external battery makes a lot of sense.

The TYLT PowerPlant has a 5,200 mAh battery, which comes in a nice, rectangular cuboid shape with rounded edges. The PowerPlant comes with an integrated cable, so that you aren’t fumbling around with cables. The downside is that this cable is quite short, so you can’t operate your phone in one hand while keeping the battery in your pocket or  your bag, with a cable trailing out. You’ll need to set your phone down so that it can juice up. Thankfully, the PowerPlant also comes with a microUSB and USB slots, so any cables you have will work with your devices. Charge-ups are pretty fast, too.  One full charge up takes about 2 hours for the iPhone 4S. The pack has got four LEDs telling you the remaining charge, and you can easily get 3 complete charges on a typical smartphone using the battery.

The TYLT PowerPlant comes in three different versions. One for iPhone 4/4S, one for iPhone 5 and one for other smartphones. The last model has got an integrated microUSB cable. Naturally, this battery can also be used for any other mobile devices you have, like tablets. The performance of the battery is certainly good, though it remains to be seen if this will continue over time. Most of these battery packs will suffer as the batteries degrade, but overall, it’s a really interesting device that will definitely help keep you powered up when you are in a bind, and no matter if you change phones or models, you’ll be still able to use it, which isn’t the case in for battery cases.

The only negative is the rubber cover the ports. I almost ripped it out the first time I opened it. It takes a while before you realize which side can be easily opened. The PowerPlant costs between $69.99 to $89.99 (USD).

ASUS teases mystery product on its Facebook page (update: it’s a 3D Blu-ray writer!)

Image

What's this? ASUS is teasing a mystery product shrouded in shadows on its Facebook page. From the looks of it, the piano-black hardware is mounted vertically onto a brushed metal cantilevered stand that just oozes style. Our vague, uninformed reckonings make us wonder if it's not an art-deco styled EeeBox, a desktop PC you'd be ashamed to hide under your desk, or the prettiest router we've ever seen. Either way, we'll keep our eyes peeled and in the meantime, you can cast your own idle speculation into the comments below.

Update: Ah, and here it is: the SBW-06C2X-U 3D Blu-ray writer that supports 6X Blu-ray writing speed! Thanks, Kiran.
