The pandemic is still an uncertain battle that can amplify in the future and we cannot leave anything to chance, can we? This prolonged pandemic has made us complacent with the urge to return to our old normal has taken over the panic-inducing scenario that we first battled in 2020. By now, however, we have resigned ourselves to the fact that face masks and shields are here to be a way of life. The face shield has been the first line of defense against COVID-19 for frontline workers, and it will stay that way. Now that we’ve realized how important it actually is, SafeSpace Shield comes into the picture with a face protector that is almost like a second skin, protecting from the pathogens in the environment without any discomfort when worn for extended periods of time.

The core idea of the SafeSpace Shield and the initial development of the product germinated from a random meeting with a Johnson & Johnson executive who wanted a practical solution that didn’t have the irks other face protectors have. SafeSpace Shield created using injection molding process is made to the exact specifications with the full-membrane Airtight Tecoflex Seal that’s lab tested for comfort and longevity of constant use.

To keep the seal tightly in place, the developers have devised a four-point attachment that can be easily adjusted according to ergonomic comfort. To counteract the common side-effect of sealing, the face shield has an anti-fog coating for a clear view of the outside world even if you are breathing out profoundly. The filter carrier keeps the filter tightly snug with the locking mechanism.

Unlike other options on the market that have their own set of advantages and shortcomings – the SafeSpace Shield has all the valued features and does away with the things that have not been liked by users over time. For example, it has the full face view of an open face shield while having a full-face seal of a powered air-purifying respirator. The design is also lightweight, and strap pressure points are well distributed using a four-point attachment around the back of the head and neck. Most of all, the distance of the shield from the face makes them perfect for people who wear glasses. It can be put on while wearing spectacles without any hassle courtesy of the custom eyeglass insert kit that comes with the package.

Grappling with COVID-19 on a regional basis, we have our neighborhood safe and vaccinated. What we lack is the ability to help out the frontline workers battling the pandemic across the world. SafeSpace Shield understands this feeling – to give to make the world a safer space by choosing to donate a shield to a frontline worker in a developing country, at a discounted rate. The project aims to help the world with every step you take – making the protectors of the world safe while they fight the good fight.

It has to be said, the SafeSpace Shield is a mindful solution that we all have been longing for, now that face protection has become an integral part of our daily routine when out in the open. With advanced anti-fogging and comfortable design, the face shield is hard to give a miss. Top that off with the non-obstructive view, and we are talking of a winning product design that will be a staple in everyone’s daily life. Currently, the advanced face shield is up on Kickstarter for an early bird price tag of $249 –saving you $51 on the MSRP. The essential accessory is slated to ship worldwide from March 2022, and now is the time to book one for yourself.

Can we do better than masks in the future? This helmet-inspired PPE sits comfortably on your head and gives you 99.99% pure air

There’s no feeling worse than relaxing the mask mandate only to revisit it again in a couple of months. A full 16 months later, masks still suck, and even the ones with the fans inside them don’t seem to even be half as comfortable as not wearing a mask… so the folks at Seguro decided the best way to design a face mask was to not design one at all.

Meet the Airsafe, a personal wearable air-purifier that models itself on a helmet instead of a face mask. It rests comfortably on your head, with a visor shielding your face on the front, and a purifier sending fresh air in from the back. There’s no elastic strap around your ear, no fabric pressed against your mouth, and no chance of your nose getting pinched because your spectacles and mask don’t go well together. The Airsafe puts you in a protective bubble of sorts, allowing you to go about your day as you breathe fresh air, smile at people, with something as socially acceptable as a helmet on your head.

The Airsafe comes in two variants that address two specific problems. The full-face variant is an alternative to the N95 face mask + face shield. It guards your entire face with a clear visor, along with a padded fabric seal around the lower half of your face to prevent air leakage.

The air you breathe filters in through a HEPA filter at the back, powered by a fan that pushes 99.99% fresh air in through hidden channels directly to your nose and mouth, so you never feel stuffy or suffocated. It creates a clean, safe breathing environment that serves as an alternative to traditional PPE, working well in the pandemic but also serving beyond by allowing you to breathe clean air in polluted cities or even in dusty workshops where you’d commonly wear a mask. The HEPA filters are replaceable, allowing you to swap filters out when they get dirty, and the innovative fabric Gaiterseal around the lower half of your face is removable, washable, and creates an anti-microbial seal that prevents the intrusion of pathogens.

The half-shield Airsafe looks and feels a lot like a half-helmet. The visor doesn’t cover your entire face, but shields just the eyes. Designed more for people with allergies to dust and pollen, the half-shield Airsafe helps provide clean air to you without necessarily creating that air-tight seal around your face.

Both of AirSafe’s variants are made from a plastic outer shell, are padded on the insides, and weigh under 2lbs – so they sit comfortably on your head, allowing you to wear them for hours. An internal battery powers the Airsafe for up to 7 hours on a full charge, and a nifty USB-C port on the back lets you easily charge your mask/helmet. Overall, the Airsafe provides a safer, more comfortable, and future-proof alternative to the face mask. It’s designed and styled to look like a helmet (although fair warning, it isn’t an alternative to a protective helmet), so you can wear it rather comfortably outdoors, or possibly even indoors too – you’ll definitely look more futuristic!

It’s time to ditch the face mask and start imagining a future with sleek transparent face shields

Let’s face it. We’ve had over a year to redesign the face mask and it doesn’t seem like any of them are more comfortable than the last. As people begin getting vaccinated against the virus and mask-mandates begin slowly relaxing, it makes sense to want to stay protected… but it’s time to look beyond that piece of fabric pressed firmly against your nose and mouth. The Blocc debuted in 2020, immediately raising over a million on Kickstarter and Indiegogo as the future of PPE. It was designed to be used in tandem with the face-mask, creating an impenetrable layer against contamination (by primarily preventing you from constantly touching your face). Now, it’s ushering in the future of protective fashion as people either combine it with the face-mask, or use it independently to create a protective shield in front of your face.

Think of the Blocc as a helmet visor sans the helmet, fashionable enough to be worn on its own, and FDA-registered for daily use. Made from scratch-resistant fog-resistant clear polycarbonate, the Blocc is as easy (and as comfortable) as wearing a pair of spectacles, and protects your eyes, nose, and mouth—the main pathways to infection—from direct droplets, sprays, and splashes. Two temple-stems suspend the Blocc by your ears while a nose-bridge allows the visor to rest comfortably against your nose, and roughly an inch away from your face. The face-shield itself is made from the same polymer as actual helmet visors (and even riot gear), and is engineered for crystal-clear, distortion-free visibility, allowing you to see through it with ease. Its tough polycarbonate construction is not only impervious to scratches and scuffs, it’s UVA/UVB and water-resistant too, protecting you in the outdoors no matter whether it’s sunny or rainy. It sits like an invisible force-field around your face, giving you the benefits of a face shield in the form-factor of a stylish fashion accessory.

The Blocc’s curved profile follows the basic shape of your face. This makes sure that your entire face is covered from the front, all while allowing you to see clearly through your peripheral vision. The anti-fog coating on the Blocc ensures the face shield never gets misty with your breath, and the fact that it sits at a distance from your face means you can easily wear a face mask underneath or even spectacles/sunglasses for that matter. The Blocc’s nose bridge is completely detachable, allowing you to wear it with spectacles on. An upper lip on the visor rests on your glasses, keeping it supported, and the temple stems sit on your ear along with your spectacles just the way 3D glasses would at the cinema. A secure and comfortable fit means you can even exercise with the Blocc on your face, and its curved profile helps deflect wind from your eyes while you’re riding a bike or skateboarding.

Its most significant achievement, however, is its ability to provide comfort and style ALONG with safety. It ditches the clinical approach for something more voguish, and the stares that you get from people around you will more likely be stares of jealousy than of awkwardness (Don’t be surprised if a few people even ask you where you got your Blocc!) Moreover, the Blocc, much like spectacles or sunglasses, can be worn for hours without feeling any discomfort, and can easily be washed with soapy water and gently wiped down with a soft towel ever so often to keep it clean and germ-free. The Blocc comes in medium and large sizes, and those foldable temple stems make it easy to fold up and carry around in a bag or backpack when you’re not around people. When you step out, just pop the face shield and rest assured that your eyes, nose, and mouth will remain safe behind the clear shield, in its own, transparent, stylish bubble.

The 15 best face mask designs of 2020 to keep you safe and healthy in the new normal of 2021!

With COVID-19 shaking the world apart, wearing a face mask anywhere and everywhere, and at all times has become a way of life. Leaving our homes without a mask or shield puts not only our lives but the lives of those around us at risk as well, not to mention it is now considered a social taboo. So, the design industry has been creating innovative, functional, and not to mention super trendy face mask designs, and we cannot wait to get our hands (or faces) on them!

The LEAF Mask is the world’s first FDA-registered, clear mask to have N99-standard air filtering abilities as well as a self-purifying feature, thanks to a built-in UV-C light. The LEAF wants you to be able to reconnect with your loved ones by staying safe behind the LEAF Transparent Face Mask. In short, you stay safe and you keep others safe, while still understanding their expressions. It enables us to be as close to “normal” as we can be right now. The LEAF’s most defining feature has to be its transparent construction.

Designed in France, the Civility mask sports a design that embraces safety without compromising on aesthetics. Its defining feature is its transparent shield on the front, made from a lightweight, resistant glass that provides a crystal-clear view of your face. Air filters on each side help deliver 98% pure air directly to your mouth and nose, while also allowing exhaled air to pass through so that your mask doesn’t fog up. An innovative TPE ring around the mask ensures an air-tight seal that works universally across multiple face-shapes and even on people with beards.

Designer Fulden Dehneli calls the mask Gādo (ガード) and the sanitizer Ken (剣) because she views these as complementary products that will become necessities in a post-pandemic world. Gādo means ‘guard’ and Ken means ‘sword’ in Japanese which is such a poetic way to describe tools – they guard us and kill the germs! Gādo and Ken were specifically designed for seamless integration into our lives. Gādo combines the benefits of a mask and a face shield with a simple sliding mechanism- a folded textile structure hidden under the shield which enlarges when the shield is slid up. This way you don’t have to constantly wear the traditionally obtrusive face shield but can ‘guard up’ if you’re among people and can’t maintain distance.

The UV Mask comes with a dual filtration system that delivers the cleanest air quality of any existing face-mask. A preliminary replaceable N95 filter blocks 95% of particles like dust, dirt, debris, up to 0.3 microns. Microorganisms smaller than 0.3 microns then enter the UV-C Sterile Vortex, a helix-shaped filter that blasts microorganisms with UV-C light to destroy 99.9% of the remaining 5% on a DNA level, to give you air that isn’t just clean, it’s medical-grade, sterile-clean, bringing total filtration efficiency to 99.99%.

Have you touched your face yet? I almost did… twice, and while that habit is a difficult one to break, the Blocc makes it easier to do so while being able to go about your day. Think of the Blocc as a helmet visor sans the helmet. Made from scratch-resistant fog-resistant clear polycarbonate, the Blocc is as easy (and as comfortable) as wearing a pair of specs. Two temple-stems suspend the Blocc by your ears while a nose-bridge allows the visor to rest comfortably against your nose and roughly an inch away from your face. The Blocc’s material choice makes it practically perfect for a face shield. Made from the same polymer as actual helmet visors (even the ones found in riot gear use PolyCarbonate), the Blocc is perfectly clear, allowing you to see through it with ease, while its resilient physical property prevents it from getting any scratches or scuffs by accident.

The BioVYZR is cutting-edge PPE made accessible to common folk like us. The unit comes with an anti-fog visor that extends from your face all the way down, to give you unmatched visibility on the front that doesn’t mist up with your breath. A neoprene vest lets you strap the visor in place, creating a literal safe-space around you, while a fan and air-filter at the back route fresh air to the inside of the space, kind of like a space-suit. The air-filter built into the BioVYZR gives you the purification of an N95 mask, without the suffocating feeling of a cloth strapped to your mouth, and creates positive air pressure within the visor, enabling easy breathing and pushing old air out to let fresh air in.

NASA has designed Pulse, a DIY wearable necklace that warns you when you are about to touch your face. NASA isn’t selling these directly, but Jet Propulsion Laboratory has made the 3D-printed concept available as an open-source project so anyone can make this smart wearable for their own health and safety. It works on a simple mechanism – the necklace has a sensor that detects when the user lifts their hands towards their face and it will vibrate to warn them using power from a common button battery. This vibration is a reminder for the user to not touch their face and soon establishes the muscle memory required to turn this into a new behavioral pattern.

Debuted at CES2020, the Atmōs face-mask from Aō Air is a wearable that provides 50x better air quality than even the best pollution masks. Rather than just being a HEPA filter that sits loosely in front of your nose and mouth, the Atmōs is a miniature air purifier, with multiple stages of air filtration powered by fans within the device that adapt to your breathing to provide as many as 240 liters of clean air per minute. In short, the faster you breathe, the faster the Atmōs delivers clean air to you. The D’fend air purifying system even targets nanoparticles, trapping dust, pollen, or even very fine ash, giving you air that’s 50 times purer than what you’d get with a cloth mask.

The Blanc provides a protective, full-face cover, giving you a tinted visor to look through, and specifically designed air-channels to breathe through. Two high-efficiency SGS-tested HEPA filters make sure the air you breathe is 99.97% pure, trapping any microparticles, microorganisms, and VOCs in the process. The mask itself offers an air-tight seal, while carefully calibrated pathways ensure the air you breathe always passes through a filter, giving you pure air with each breath. Air that you exhale passes out through outlets located at the base of the mask, ensuring your visor never gets fogged up.

Meet the NE-1, an experimental face-helmet that looks like something a bee-keeper would wear but is in-fact protective headgear that’s both safe and comfortable to wear in the pandemic. Developed by Texas-based ValhallaMED, the NE-1 helmet combines the face-shield and mask into a singular device you wear on your head. Fitted with a powered air system and a patent-pending filtration mechanism, the NE-1 routes air-flow to make sure the air you breathe is 95% pure, but without needing an air-tight seal like most conventional masks. Not only does the mask filter the air you inhale AND exhale, but it also comes fitted with coolers that keep you breezy and comfortable outdoors. The cool air, aside from giving you overall comfort, also helps the NE-1’s wide visor from misting or fogging up.

Rolon, an architect, designer, and CEO of his own 3D printing company, realized what a big problem it was breathing polluted air in China, where he had set up his studio. The best mask needed to be comfortable, and effectively circulate purified air so that you could breathe with ease, and your glasses wouldn’t get fogged up. The solution required scaling down an air purifier to something that was small enough to fit on your face. Calling it the ATMOBLUE, Leandro and his team developed an entirely new category of wearables that could actively purify the air of 99.9% of particles, pioneering a technology that made them sort of the Tesla of face-masks, as opposed to the N95 which only filtered 95% of the air. The mask featured “positive air pressure” which helped keep out germs and contaminants by making the air pressure inside the mask greater than the air pressure outside. Built-in fans pushed purified air right into the insides of the mask, allowing you to breathe normally, and one-way outlets got rid of the humid air, so your mouth never felt wet and sweaty. ATMOBLUE was designed as an upgrade to the N95, which almost every Asian wore outdoors. Its fan-operated purification system allowed people to breathe clean air easily (a feature that really helped people with inherent respiratory issues), and a comfortable silicone rim around the mask created a proper airtight seal, so air didn’t leak out – which ensured that you were breathing pure air at all times, and that if you wore glasses, they never fogged up.

Inspired by the AIRPOP masks, designer Oliver Perretta created a multifunctional mask. With usability being the keystone of any design, the mask not only filters the air but also acts as an air quality monitor! The quality monitor accurately transmits data to your smartphone, helping you be aware and keep yourself safe.

Ex Apple designer

The idea for a DIY hack came to Paseman around the time when the country was facing a severe shortage of N95 masks, forcing doctors and nurses to wear readily available loosely-fitted surgical masks. Paseman first tried scouting her area for N95 masks, hoping to donate them to medical facilities, and when she couldn’t find any N95 masks available in her vicinity, she decided to create a life-saving lifehack to make standard surgical masks more functional by ensuring a tighter seal/fit. The solution? A simple DIY seal that closes all air gaps around your nose and mouth so there’s no air leakage anywhere caused by a loosely fitted mask. Paseman and Duong’s first iteration of the Fix The Mask solution involved the MacGyverian use of a handful of rubber bands that could be strung together to create a tight brace to secure the mask’s fit. A few iterations later, the two developed a more robust solution by cutting into rubber sheets to create a better, more effective harness. The harness design is available on the Fix The Mask website as a free resource, to allow health professionals and regular citizens to get the most out of their face-gear while remaining safe from the virus.

Speaking of multi-functional designs, we are totally geeking out over this design by Zack Massos and Eitan Adika that merges a reusable face mask with headphones! How do you ask? The answer is bone conduction tech! Dystopian as it may sound, but in a future where wearing masks is the norm, this face mask-headphones hybrid could help you commute and stay connected all while staying safe!

Have we considered how this normalization in the usage of masks will affect the kids? Coming from the complete freedom and joy they are accustomed to being in, this new world with masks and instructions to not touch anything is a scary change. Oliver Perretta wants to make this process more comfortable for the kids by creating this child-friendly mask that lets the kid dress up as their favorite animals and have fun while staying safe!

This astronaut-inspired PPE helmet has an air filter and even its own Bluetooth comms system!

Well, Jetsons didn’t get the flying car right, but they sure as hell nailed the fact that we’d need to wear helmets outdoors!

Meet the NE-1, an experimental face-helmet that looks like something a bee-keeper would wear, but is in-fact protective headgear that’s both safe and comfortable to wear in the pandemic. Developed by Texas-based ValhallaMED, the NE-1 helmet combines the face-shield and mask into a singular device you wear on your head. Not only does the mask filter the air you inhale AND exhale, it comes fitted with coolers that keep you breezy and comfortable outdoors. The cool air, aside from giving you overall comfort, also helps the NE-1’s wide visor from misting or fogging up. The result is similar to wearing an actual bike-helmet. Face-protection and full visibility, albeit with two significant upgrades… clean air, and active powered cooling that lets you wear the helmet for hours.

One would argue that a futuristic, Jetsons-inspired helmet would be incomplete with its own comms system… which is why the NE-1 is outfitted with a Bluetooth audio system that lets you both speak and listen to others while you’ve got the mask on! The mask comes with a flexible neoprene neck-seal and a unique shape, accommodating a wide range of face sizes, and even letting you comfortably wear it with spectacles or sunglasses!

This face shield was designed to be a functional and fashionable barrier between your hands and face

Between the start and the end of this article, you will have touched your face an estimated 3-4 times. Whether it’s to scratch your nose, stroke your chin, or adjust your spectacles, humans are wired to touch their face and it’s just a fundamentally difficult thing to weed that behavior out of our psychology. That’s why we HAVE face shields, to serve as real-world barriers that constantly remind us that it isn’t kosher to be constantly touching our faces when there’s a deadly virus among us.

Two temple-stems suspend the Blocc by your ears while a nose-bridge allows the visor to rest comfortably against your nose, and roughly an inch away from your face. It sits like an invisible force-field around your face, acting as a constant reminder to not scratch your eye or dig your nose or do anything that would be deemed just plain unhygienic or nasty.

The Blocc’s curved profile follows the basic shape of your face. This makes sure that your entire face is covered from the front, all while allowing you to see clearly through your peripheral vision. The anti-fog coating on the Blocc ensures the face shield never gets misty with your breath, and the fact that it sits at a distance from your face means you can easily wear a face mask underneath… and spectacles too. The Blocc’s nose bridge is completely detachable, allowing you to wear it with spectacles on. An upper lip on the visor rests on your glasses, keeping it supported, and the temple stems sit on your ear along with your spectacles just the way 3D glasses would at the cinema. A secure and comfortable fit means you can even exercise with the Blocc just fine, and its curved profile allows it to work as a helmet’s curved visor would, deflecting wind from your eyes while you’re riding a bike or skateboarding.

The Blocc’s biggest win, however, is to perfectly strike a balance between safety and style. It ditches the clinical approach for something more voguish, that’ll actually have people asking you where you bought it from, rather than looking at you with awkward stares. It can be worn for hours without causing any strain or skin-pinching caused by elastic bands, and you can easily wear the Blocc multiple times… just wash it under soapy water and dry it with a soft towel before each use. The Blocc comes in medium and large sizes, and those foldable temple stems make it easy to fold up and carry around in a bag or backpack when you’re not around people. When you step out, just pop the face shield and rest assured that your eyes, nose, and mouth will remain safe behind the clear sheild, in its own, transparent, stylish bubble.

Suspended body visors that will keep you social and socially distant

We are all itching to go back to restaurants or maybe just work with friends in a cafe. For many of us take out was a part of everyday life and people would look forward to fine dining dates, be it to celebrate occasions or simply the weekend. Designers and leaders are working on innovative solutions that can help us get back to our routine lives faster while still practicing social distancing. One such brilliant idea is Plex’Eat, a visor-lamp, by Christophe Gernigon!

Earth is reopening bit by bit and the first thing on everyone’s mind is grabbing a bite outside! Plex’Eat was designed for the new normal of dining out. Since we can’t wear masks while eating, Gernigon has created large, lamp-shaped, protective visors that are suspended over the diner’s upper body to keep them safe while enjoying their meal. The hanging shield is made of clear lightweight plexiglass which lets everyone enjoy social interaction without risking their safety. The shape of these upper body-visors also has a curved opening at the back which allows you to move in and out of it with ease – no bending and swerving!

Plex’Eat is easy to clean for the staff in-between service and doesn’t take away from the experience of enjoying a meal outside. In fact, I think this better – no one can spill on you, if you have a friend who spits while talking you can still hang out with them, if you have shocking news you don’t have to wait for them to swallow their food/drink. I vote for Plex’Eats!

Why this mask + shield is different from everything you’ve seen so far

There are a lot of innovative masks that we’re constantly seeing on the internet and it’s ironic because there is a global shortage of PPE for healthcare workers. So why are designers still creating masks? Because the lockdown may end in 8 weeks but the vaccine won’t be ready and therefore we need creative ways for the mass adoption of wearing masks as a part of everyday fashion. This way we stay safe as we enter a ‘new normal’ and leave the surgical masks for the health workers. Now you may ask how is this mask any different from the other cool masks we’ve seen?

Well, this one doubles up as a face shield so that no bacteria enters your eye and comes with an accessory-like sanitizer so you won’t have to search your bags or have an oddly-shaped pocket.

Along with head straps that ensure comfort and fit, it also keeps the mouth visible to keep the window of human expression open, something we crave so deeply and will not take for granted when this ends. Ken is a sanitizer spray bottle that is ergonomically designed to be more portable and accessible than its predecessors.

Dehneli aims to answer the questions that have crossed our minds through her work – What if we have to wear a mask every day from now on? How do we stay protected as we resume our daily routines outside quarantine? Will masks make us feel less friendly when we interact socially? Can I find a sanitizer that doesn’t look like its sitting in the center console of my car for years? Gādo and Ken is your S.H.I.E.L.D (see what I did there?) team when you step back out into the world.

Face Mask designed for a surreal future where wearing PPE is humanity’s new norm

Whether we like it or not, masks are the new normal at least for the foreseeable future. It is now a universal guideline that everyone has to wear a mask when they step out. Designers, architects, fashion brands all over the world are using their software, laser cutters and 3D printers to make mask production faster (mass-k production, get it?) to fight shortages. New York-based designer Joe Doucet envisions the face shield creatively and takes it from being a symbol of our toughest days to a seamless part of our everyday fashion. When asked what influenced him to create the conceptual face shield, it was this question – how do we encourage the mass adoption of an unwanted necessity?

Due to the longterm effects of COVID-19 on our lives, the way we dress and interact will evolve. Till a vaccine is available globally, we will be governed by the laws of social distancing, and wearing PPE is crucial for our safety and of those around us. Studies show that visors & face shields are more effective than surgical masks but happen to be uncomfortable and obtrusive-looking. The ability to adapt and evolve are also the pillars of good design, so Doucet has designed a face shield that people will actually want to wear instead of feeling awkward or conscious about it. Just like everyone, Doucet is also in quarantine and has been learning new 3D design tools, he says “I modeled these in Fusion 360 and rendered in Blender, no photoshoots happening these days.”

The conceptual PPE features a curved form that is see-through and integrates the darker lens of sunglasses. The arms of the visor-sunglass are more comfortable than traditional masks. It covers your eyes as well which is important and not something we get out of the usual face masks. Doucet reimagines the existing face shield to be more minimal and visually appealing so that the product can be accepted into our lives faster. He wanted to make the face shield look more friendly and less alien-looking so that it encourages us to adapt and evolve with how our world is changing while being safe. “It is hoped that improving the basic face shield design will encourage far greater uptake of its usage and help everyone adjust to the “new normal” that awaits us,” says Doucet.

This air purifying face-shield creates a bubble of safety around its wearer

Let’s face it. For the foreseeable future, cinemas, malls, conventions, and concerts are just dead on arrival. Any sort of social phenomenon that requires groups of people in close-quarters is going to be a potential health risk; and while we try to get life back on track soon, we just aren’t equipped with the tools to completely safeguard us or change our behavior patterns. The BioVYZR, as strangely dystopian it may look, might just put us on a fast track to a more social future. More comfortable and definitely more protective than a face-mask, or a face-shield, the BioVYZR creates a ‘bubble of safety’ around you. It doesn’t sit around your nose and mouth like a mask, or guard your eyes like a clear visor… it just encapsulates your entire torso in a hazmat-suit-inspired bubble that keeps you ventilated and safe from airborne pathogens and germs.

There was a time, not too long ago, where wearing a face-mask in public seemed outright strange. The novel coronavirus seems to have shifted the Overton window to a point where wearing a mask isn’t a sign of paranoia, it’s a sign of being a good, compliant, health-conscious, and caring citizen. People at VYZR Technologies, however, realized that the mask, while it was a symbol of showing that you were a responsible citizen, wasn’t entirely protective. Wearing a mask kept your eyes vulnerable, and a face-shield still exposed parts of your face and head where the virus could get onto, before traveling to your hands and then your face after you took your mask off. The BioVYZR just prevents any sort of microorganism from even making it to your torso in the first place. It protects your face, your beard (if you have one like I do), and your hair. It’s as simple to wear as a helmet, and unlike a mask and face-shield, doesn’t feel uncomfortable after hours of wearing.

The entire setup runs on a battery that lasts for 8-12 hours on a single charge, and a simple hanging loop built right onto the top of the visor lets you hang it up at home when you’re done using it.

I’ll say this outright… the BioVYZR is a bit of a culture shock, but that’s only because it puts personal comfort and protection above all. There aren’t too many cons to the design, aside from the fact that you can’t really look behind you without completely turning around – something that doesn’t seem like a major drawback in the grander scheme of things. The BioVYZR still does a pretty remarkable job of clearing your entire peripheral view, allowing you to look around, even downwards, without a face mask obstructing your vision or fogging up your glasses. Unlike face masks and shields, the BioVYZR sits resting on your shoulders like a backpack. The adult-size weighs 1250 grams (that’s half the weight of a full-face motorbike helmet), while the child-size tops off at just over 1050 grams, and wearing the BioVYZR doesn’t leave or cause any ‘mask lines’ around your nose and mouth. In fact, it doesn’t even ruffle your hairstyle, if that’s something you’re concerned about. Designed to allow you to be socially active without compromising on safety, the BioVYZR’s design eliminates germs (in the air or on your hands) from getting on your face. Yes, you may look a tad bit overcautious, but that can only be a good thing, right?

BioVYZR: Venture Out & Breathe Easy

The BioVYZR is an innovative Personal Protective Equipment that shields the wearer’s face and filters out the air you breathe. The patent-pending design physically protects you from airborne pathogens, allergens, and pollutants.

With its space-age aesthetic, the BioVYZR 1.0 is a stark departure from other types of Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), a type of PPE traditionally reserved for industrial and healthcare settings. “The problem,” Al-Qaysi, one of the founders, explains, “is that a PAPR can cost around $1,800. The BioVYZRs we’re making will retail for one-tenth of that. The fact that they’re effective, practical, and affordable make our BioVYZRs a game-changer in the field of PPE.”

The BioVYZR’s proprietary structure provides 360-degrees of protection to shield the wearer on all sides. It has a large face shield that offers spectacular optical clarity with an anti-fog surface. Its air purifying system employs a motor-powered fan to draw outside air through two N95 filters. It also filters exiting air to ensure no airborne pathogens get out from under the hood of the BioVYZR.

Another way the BioVYZR offers protection is by blocking the wearer from inadvertently touching their face, protecting their eyes, mouth, and nose from contact with contaminated hands or fomites.

A battery-powered motor fan pushes air into the BioBYZR, creating positive pressure inside the BioVYZR’s hood. This positive pressure pushes out exhaled air from inside through two filtering air vents. Inflowing air passes through a N95 filter to remove up to 95% of particulate matter from the inflowing air. This includes, but is not limited to, aerosol-transmitted pathogens, mist droplets, pollen, dust, soot, and pet dander.

It’s important to keep in mind that if infectious particles are caught in the filters, it is important to take precautions when replacing the filters to avoid contamination. Your BioVYZR will come with detailed instructions on how to safely replace and dispose of used filters.

Even though COVID-19 virions (virus particles) are only .1 microns in diameter, they’re often transmitted through airborne respiratory droplets expelled from the mouth and nose. These infectious droplets can range from 10–100 µm (microns) and will not pass through N95 filters.

When used in a healthcare setting, their medical BioVYZRs have distinct benefits that go beyond superior protection. These include, but are not limited to:

– Not requiring a full face seal to be effective (like masks)
– Preventing inadvertent face touching and cross-contamination
– Not obstructing the face and mouth for better communication
– Facilitating patient interactions and close-proximity care
– They can be worn all day long, inside and out of the hospital
– They come with disposable sterile covers that can be safely donned/doffed
– Their filters can last much longer than N95 masks and require
– Less handling (for replacement)
