Fan Made Fallout 4 Apple IIc Demo: Fallout ’84

Like millions of other people, chiptune band 8 Bit Weapon can barely wait for Fallout 4. To help the time go by, they made a demo version of the game… for the Apple II.

Yep, their concept looks a lot like Wasteland. Which makes a lot of sense!

8 Bit Weapon made the demo using the Outlaw Editor, an upcoming Java-based open source engine for developing retro games that work on multiple platforms.

Fan Absorbs Capcom’s Powers, Remakes Mega Man in Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker is famous for its players’ punishing – and sometimes unbeatable – levels, but it’s also become a way for fans to pay homage to non-Mario games. Here’s one such example, an approximation of the first Mega Man game by YouTuber KHace.

super_mario_maker_mega_men_nes_remake_by_KHace_1zoom in

Because of Super Mario Maker‘s limitations – block count, lack of actual Robot Masters – KHace couldn’t perfectly recreate the legendary action platformer. But he did a mighty fine job! The music helps sell the remake – it was performed by RushJet1 – but even if you mute KHace’s playthrough below you’ll still recognize the stages. In case you’re wondering how KHace replaced Mario with Mega Man, it’s because Super Mario Maker lets you swap Mario with other Amiibo characters.

KHace added his levels’ IDs on the video’s description. Capcom Man, let Nintendo Man assimilate you so fans can make their dream game themselves with a Mega Man Maker.

Stark Tower Virtual Reality Tour: Headsets Assemble!

Nowadays, video games that don’t involve a lot of interaction are derided as non-games or antigames. And we’ve been spoiled by the ones that both meet this imagined quota of input-output seesaw and have wonderful worlds, taking their beauty for granted. But that’s not the case with virtual reality. With the tech still in its infancy, we’re happy to get just about anything that comes our way. Take Trek Industries’ unofficial VR tour of Tony Stark’s building for instance.

Coming this November – unless Marvel says otherwise – the free “experience” will let Oculus Rift and HTC Vive users roam freely inside the fictional building. Because why the heck not? I’d love to try it. If everything goes as planned, Trek Industries will update the tour with improved buildings and traffic, and add a meet and greet with Iron Man and other Avengers.

Just imagine if that was a pitch for a non-VR video game. They’d be crucified online. And a decade or two from now we’ll vomit hatred to anyone who dares to make a virtual reality app where you can’t see the individual pores on your virtual skin, sending them death threats to pass the time before a holographic tour of Ghüs’ farm is released. Because why the heck not? I’d love to try that.

Super Mario 64 Bob-Omb Battlefield HD Fan Remake: We Give It 7 Out of 120 Stars

Last year we heard of a Super Mario 64 fan who’s trying to remake the game in full HD. Programmer and 3D animator Erik Ross never set out to accomplish such a gargantuan task, but he managed to recreate Super Mario 64‘s first level in 1080p on his own using the Unity Engine.

Erik made the playable replica to demonstrate his Unity-compatible character controller. He initially planned to make just part of Bob-Omb Battlefield, but fortunately for us he got carried away and finished the entire level. He made all of the art and animations except for the ones for Mario, the Goomba and Power Star, which he borrowed from Super Mario Galaxy. Likewise, the sounds and music are mostly from existing Mario games. Be sure to watch his demo video in 1080p if you can.

Erik admits that his replica isn’t 100% accurate, but I don’t think anyone will hold that against him. You can play his replica on your browser – it just needs the Unity Web Player to run – or you can download a self-contained copy for Windows, OS X and Linux from his website.

Fan-made Castlevania Board Game: Whips & Daggers

Last year Redditor Brandon aka XsimonbelmontX made a Fallout-themed Monopoly set as a birthday gift for his wife. He was so touched by the reception that he got online that he was motivated to make another board game. This time he went all out and made an original game, an old school Castlevania adventure RPG.

Brandon’s game features 11 characters from the series, each with their own weapons and abilities. In the game, players have been cursed and will die unless they gather the five parts of Dracula’s body from all over the mansion, put him back together and kill him once again (and again, if needed, as there’s a chance that he’ll resurrect). That’s if the monsters in the mansion don’t kill them first.

Here’s a look at the game’s pieces:

There are so many things to love about Brandon’s game, from the diversity of both the characters and the enemies to the tension induced by the time-based curse and of course the random boss mechanic. Head to Brandon’s Imgur album and Reddit post for more on his game.

Donkey Kong Fan-made Board Game: Barrels & Ladders

The Legend of Zelda is getting an officially licensed Monopoly cross over. But if you’d rather play a board game with Donkey Kong and Jumpman, check out Hernando Melo’s reskin of Chutes and Ladders featuring the 1981 arcade game.

Hernando’s Donkey Kong Barrels & Ladders plays just like the original board game. You just roll a six-sided die and move your Jumpman token up the platforms according to your roll. If you land on the base of a ladder, then you go up to the space where the ladder ends. But if you land on a barrel you have to go back down to the space indicated by its arrow. The first player to get to Pauline wins.

Hernando is selling a high resolution PDF template of the board game for just $1.90 (USD) on his Etsy shop. He recommends that you print the playing area on 11″ x 17″ cardstock. Hernando said he’ll consider selling a ready-to-play version of Barrels & Ladders if there’s enough interest for it.
