This folding carabiner + knife combination is the perfect companion for your everyday adventures!

Mike Bond’s trove of everyday carry designs has once more been opened and this time around, it can clip to your belt loop or pocket knife as the ultimate daily carry. Celebrated for his Techliners and Para-biners at Ti2 Design, Mike Bond knows pocket essentials. After all, our pockets are prime real estate for everyday carry items and there’s only so much they can fit. It’s a good thing Compano, an everyday carry keychain carabiner folding knife, designed by Mike Bond for CRKT comes with a belt-loop clip so your pockets can stay open for business.

When it comes to pocket knives, size matters – we are talking blades after all. Coming just under 1.5 inches in length, the blade is reinforced with an added layer of carbon for a stronger and more durable edge compared to stainless steel. Stainless steel knives dull blades with added chromium, while high-carbon stainless steel delivers a sharper edge and firmness to the blade, but also falls vulnerable to easy rusting when exposed to moisture. The Compano folding knife leans on a swing mechanism to unfurl the high carbon stainless steel blade, which can regularly be sharpened for everyday maintenance. Bond also integrated a spring-loaded gate from which Compano’s carabiner rebounds to easily hinge up and down. With this added carabiner feature, Bond managed to take the best features from other essential daily-carry products and merge them into a keychain-sized folding knife that readily attaches to your body as you leave your front door.

Compano also features a classic locking mechanism with a slip joint feature that secures the knife in place when either opened or closed. When using the blade, Compano reaches a full length of 4.59 inches and only weighs around 2.20 ounces so whether the knife is used for carving or slicing, the job will always feel manageable. Since this is an everyday carry product, it’s important that it embodies a look and feel that has us instinctually reach for it before leaving the house. With a black stonewash handle and bronze accents around the circular opening and carabiner, Compano has a classic look that will only improve over time with consistent use for a more crafted and sculpted looking pocket knife.

This framed disassembled iPhone 5 makes the perfect gift for any tech-lover

As an industrial designer myself, there’s definitely art in the way products are designed, engineered, and crafted together. More so, when the products are pulled apart so you can marvel at the level of intricacy gone into putting it together. Take the iPhone for example, one of the most iconic products of our time. Ask anyone what they think of the iPhone and a hefty percentage of them will say it looks beautiful for sure (some may use the word expensive too), but nobody knows what it looks like on the inside.

Indie art-studio GRID is creating artpieces from these electronics by revealing their, well, inner beauty. The iPhone 5 Framed Edition has a carefully dismantled, arranged, and labeled unit of the smartphone, showing every single component that comes together to form the iconic smartphone. On either side of the display unit lie the front and back, the Gorilla glass display and the machined Aluminum chassis. In between lie the battery, the main board, the different modules, buttons, even the camera, speaker, and the SIM tray! There’s definitely a certain beauty to the iPhone’s complexity, like looking at a da Vinci painting up close so you can see every single brushstroke, crack in the paint, and the canvas texture. If you’re a tech-lover, futurist, and nerd like me, this is no less than looking at the Mona Lisa! Obviously, the phones come pre-loved (used), so expect minor wear and tear.

This fully functional DIY mini-television is the size of a coin! (And it has its own remote)

Now I’m not really a small-screen person. The idea of watching Netflix on a mobile phone is cringeworthy to me, but there’s something just uniquely charming about the TinyCircuits TinyTV. Designed to be roughly 24 millimeters in width (that’s about the size of a quarter or a dollar coin), the TinyTV is a real, functioning, DIY television that even comes with its own remote control!

The TinyTV comes as a DIY kit that assembles easily in less than 5 minutes with no soldering or special tools required. It runs off a MicroSD card, allowing you to play back up to 5 hours of content (in MP4 format) on the TV’s ridiculously small screen. The TinyTV also comes along with its own TinyRemote with 6 adorable little buttons to power the TV on, change channels, adjust the volume, and even mute the television (I wonder how loud the speakers on the TV are). The TV’s 3D-printed enclosure is designed to resemble old-timey cathode-ray tube tellies from the 70s… and even though it’s printed in white filament, you can easily give it a quick paint-job with some acrylic paints. Don’t use a spray-paint can though, you might just blow the damn thing away!

This rocking-horse inspired cookie cutter comes with a festive twist!

I hope you’ll forgive me for this terrible pun, but OTOTO‘s products are truly ‘deer’ to me! The company, which has established a reputation for making some of the most heartwarming products, does a remarkable job of combining elements of playfulness along with a strong storytelling aspect to create products that are just clever! Take for instance the Sweet Deer – a rocking-horse-inspired cookie cutter. Designed to clearly get children to help with food-prep, the cutter comes in the shape of a reindeer on a rocking base. The rocking base comes with tapered edges that help it cut into dough, allowing kids to cut out cookies while playing with their forest friend! The Sweet Deer is 100% food safe and comes made from High-Quality Silicone. Aside from cutting cookies, it debosses a neat star in the center too, to give the cookie a nice festive touch!

This concrete watch draws design inspiration from WWI’s vintage timepieces & urban architecture

If you visit Taiwan, you’ll find that most of the architecture is built using cement. Then in 2006 the founder of Taiwan-based 22 Design Studio saw Japan’s exquisite, cast-in-place concrete architecture and realized that the material had potential to be moulded creatively and could be used in product design as well. So, 22 Design Studio launched a series of rings and stationary inspired by urban architecture and the latest addition to that range is their Concrete Sector watch!

This minimal watch is also inspired by architecture and urban life, to put it in the studio’s own words, “It is a metropolitan watch designed for urban residents, emphasizing the perfect balance of design, craftsmanship and practicality.” The Concrete Sector watch also draws elements from the battlefields of WWI, specifically the trench watch design which was introduced to be a convenient alternative to the pocket watch the soldiers were carrying. Like their other concrete items, this watch is also crafted using 22 Design Studio’s exclusive concrete curing process which gives it that unique brutalist aesthetic. The technique used is called ‘béton brut’ where the concrete is left unfinished after being cast and this showcases the patterns and seams imprinted on it by the formwork.

The dial’s structured 3D grooves are cut into radial 12 and 60 equal parts. The shadow caused by the cutting is used as the time scale to accurately indicate every minute and second. The concrete grid rises slightly in the “22nd” minute as a slight nod to the studio’s work. The Concrete Sector watch features Swiss Sellita SW200-1 automatic winding movement with a power reserve of 38 hours and comes in a 316L medical grade stainless steel case. It is also water resistant up to 50 meters, scratch-resistant and has an anti-reflective sapphire glass. The sandwich structure is also coated with Super-LumiNova which makes it easy to read time in day and night. This handmade timepiece has contemporary dial with a vintage soul.

This glass orb filled with bio-luminescent plankton is brighter than my future…

If you’ve ever had bioluminescent beaches on your bucket list (I know I have), Pyrofarms’ Bio Orb may just be the closest thing to actually being around those bioluminescent waters. The orb, which comes with its own pouch filled with seawater and living bioluminescent plankton (dinoflagellates, if you’re fancy) that activate when moved. Just place the liquid-filled orb on a window that gets enough sunlight and the plankton get charged through the day. Give them a gentle swirl at night (or in darkness) and they glow with that incredible blue aura, looking like you’ve got galaxies suspended in the glass orb. The orb even comes with its own octopus stand, looking like some Kraken carrying a magical sphere of sorts.

The dinoflagellates are living organisms that follow the circadian clock, like humans, sensing when its night time (past sunset). The closer it gets to midnight, the more they shine. All you need to do is care for them by keeping the Dino in moderate lighting during the day so that the plankton charge themselves with nutrients for your night-light-show!

This portable grill looks just like a classic metal toolbox!

I’m assuming there’s a major overlap between people who love grilling in the outdoors, and people who love DIY projects… and this toolkit-shaped BBQ grill is perhaps the coolest gift you could give those people. Designed to look exactly like the archetypal metal toolkit you’d find in your garage or toolshed, the BBQ Toolbox from SuckUK opens up into a nifty outdoor grill with two grilling platforms. a compartment for resting your grilling tools (skewers, spatulas, whatnot) and two racks for storing your spices, herbs, and condiments.

Perfect for a nice alfresco barbecue, the BBQ Toolbox comes in a handy, portable size, and is made entirely from steel and coated with heat-resistant red paint. An 8×15” main grilling area is large enough to serve up a meal for as many as 4 people. The secondary grill serves as a warming rack, letting you keep food like sliders or hot dog buns warm while you grill up patties and sausages. When you’re done with your meal, lift the main grilling platform to discard your coals and give the entire toolbox a quick wipe-down before folding it up and carrying it back home. I’d advise you to store this bad-boy in your kitchen, though… you don’t want to accidentally carry your screwdriver, hammer, and wrench-set to your barbecue!

Gifts for Designers: Apple’s patents, turned into graphic posters that you can hang on your wall!

As someone who knows a bunch of designers, I’ll attest to the fact that it’s mighty hard finding a creative gift for someone who’s entire job revolves around creativity. Buy them something and there’s a sizeable chance that either they already own it or don’t like it. It’s rare to find something they’ve never seen before… something that takes them by surprise and delight, but you’re in a fair bit of luck if you’re reading this and looking for something to gift a designer friend, relative, colleague, or the person you got in the Secret Santa sweepstakes at work.

Retro Patents’ graphical posters literally put design history on your walls. Taking graphical representations and diagrams from actual patent files available at the US Patent and Trademark Office, Retro Patents turns them into posters you can hang on your wall. Their catalog spans a bunch of products and services, but we have our eye on three of the most recognizable products of our time… the original iPhone, iPod, and the Macintosh computer which put Apple on the map. All three posters feature the patent images taken directly from the open-source files, complete with the patent number, application name, and the holder of the patent. The posters are printed using Epson UltraChrome water based HDR ink-jet technology on Ultra Premium Luster Photo Paper for the finest results, before being framed and shipped.

10 Best pens designed with love for every design + stationery addict!

If you have clicked on this post, you share our deep-seated love for everything stationery – trust me when I say we can fawn over paper clips too! Working every day with product design means we have an eye for attention to detail that is there in the material of the design, of the form of the pen to its finish, we appreciate the effort and long hours put in by the designer. It is this attention to detail that sets an ordinary pen apart from the designer pens we have curated here. Each design here will leave you in awe as well as with a smile as you share our enthusiasm – from the SpaceX inspired pen that ‘lands’ on your desk to those COPIC markers given a new lease of life in a more portable fan-shaped design. The designs in this collection are so essential, they will be elevated from a pen design to an essential EDC that will be the most valued gift you will ever own.
P.S. – This collection will make a really thoughtful Christmas gift for every stationery lover – it’s never too early to start Xmas shopping!

Inspired by the democratization of space travel and how one private company, founded by Elon Musk is leading the charge to make space-travel accessible to all, the Nominal Pen is literally designed to look like a rocket… making it perhaps the most literal take on the ‘space pen’. The pen’s name comes from the term ‘nominal’, often used for when everything’s going smoothly and according to plan. Designed as a celebration of SpaceX’s recent achievements of being the only private company to send humans to the ISS and bring them back (while even retrieving parts of the spaceship to be reused at a later date – something nobody’s ever done), the Nominal Pen models itself on the Falcon series of rockets (the Falcon 9 Block 5 in particular). The pen comes in a similar light+dark metal finish, featuring four retractable legs that open out, allowing it to stand vertically on its own… after all, it would be quite shameful to have to put a rocket-shaped pen in your pen-stand, right? The Nominal Pen’s retractable legs are operated by a twist-to-open mechanism machined right into the pen’s metal body… while the opposite end of the pen features a magnetic crew-capsule that detaches from the rocket-body!

Not technically a pen, the 3Dsimo MultiPro by Petr Duba is the wet dream of every designer/creator who just wants to go wild with creating and not be limited by the availability of prototyping or workshop tools. Designed to cut down on expensive gadgets that otherwise collect dust in your workshop, 3Dsimo MultiPro helps democratize creation, with its pen-shaped tool and detachable head system that works much like a hand-held power tool. Its detachable heads let it instantly transform into a drill machine, an electric screwdriver, a jigsaw, a foam-cutter, soldering iron, heat-etcher/engraver, and even a 3D printing pen (like the 3Doodler).

Celebrated as the most successful fountain pen in crowdfunding history, the Stilform INK is back in its minimal, delightful glory, but with a few tiny tweaks that make it better and more long-lasting. The pen comes in its signature cylindrical design, with two flat edges running length-wise to prevent it from rolling. Its iconic element lies in the magnetic cap, which cleverly self-aligns as it snaps to the pen, thanks to multiple hidden neodymium magnets that make sure the cap fits on the right way. To open the pen, just twist the cap causing the inner magnets to repel each other, and the cap effortlessly comes off to reveal the German-made Peter Bock nib sitting inside.

Created as a cross between a Pantone shade card and a stationery set, the Pen Fan fits 8 different flat-head sketch pens in a small, easy-to-carry set. The flat pens are connected to each other, forming a neat Japanese-fan style layout that displays all 8 colors for you to pick and choose from. Each individual sketch pen is detachable too, allowing you to snap off and on pens to create a palette of your choice! Stationery-hoarders, you’ve been warned.

An unusual looking and unusually handy piece of EDC, Noval Bell’s Darter pen comes entirely machined from aluminum and brass. The outer body sits at a remarkable 58mm in height (that’s the same size as an AA battery), and houses inside it a Cross Matrix ballpoint refill. Around the refill also sits the intricately machined sewing kit which cleverly houses 4 needles, a bobbin, 2 spools of thread, and even space for a spare button for good measure. The Cross Matrix ballpoint refill ensures the Darter works spectacularly as a writing instrument, while although the sewing module won’t be something you use often, it’ll be a practical lifesaver when you do end up needing it to stitch the hole in your pockets from your other extravagant purchases!

nuka comprises of an eternal pencil, made of a specialized alloy tip that can oxidize a paper’s surface without a residue, essentially making it run forever (and not need sharpening either). While that, in itself, is pretty marvelous, it comes with nuka’s invincible notebook. The notebook is waterproof, tear-proof, and works wonderfully in conjunction with the nuka pencil. Together, you can take notes practically anywhere, anyhow. Write in the rain, in the snow, upside down, or even in a hurry. nuka’s notebook is capable of being your canvas in practically any scenario without ripping, tearing, or affecting your line-quality. What do you do when the notebook gets over? nuka also comes with a specialized eraser fluid that lets you wipe the entire book clean, leaving not even a trace of your lines and notes. The eraser fluid comes in both spray and wet-wipe form, and wipes the oxidization/lines/notes off the paper, making it brand new, something even water or an eraser can’t do.

Designed by Alasdair MacLaine, Wingback’s Black Steel collection sports three minimal-yet-functional products that are bound to be an unwavering part of your everyday carry. A bullet-sized Key Cache helps you store emergency money on your keychain, while a mechanical pen with its comfortable broad design promises to be the last pen you’ll ever want to use. All of the Black Steel products are precisely lathe-manufactured in the UK using stainless steel, before being coated with a 3um thick surface of the magical Tungsten Carbide using a revolutionary process called magnetron sputtering. The result is a product with a black finish that’s still remarkably shiny, thanks to the steel sitting underneath it. You can even get custom personalized inscriptions laser-engraved onto your products, revealing the shining steel underneath the black coating. Each EDC gear is designed to be perfectly functional as well as aesthetic, with impeccable tolerances, and knurled surfaces that make using the items easy.

The concrete stationery created by 22Studio is no less than art, these are made to last lifelong and passed down as family collectibles through generations. Concrete is used to make this pen because it adds a rich look without making it shiny or fancy – it is simple but makes a bold statement. The solid pen starts as a liquid mixture of different elements and then it allowed to set like stone. The concrete pen is carefully designed and crafted by hand in the studio which gives it its unique personality.

Rather sardonically titled “Not Just Another Black Pencil”, Matteo Ercole’s pencil design is everything a stationery-lover wants. Bringing an avant-garde design to mechanical lead pencils, Ercole’s concept is as luxurious and desirable as most state-of-the-art collector-edition fountain pens are. With a thick, robust metal body, complete with an anodized finish and a matching-tone speckle (just like you’d see in professional camera bodies), Not Just Another Black Pencil is a delight to look at, as the light gently bounces off its satin-finish body, and I imagine it’s a pleasure to grip too, with the cold metal feeling just great against your fingertips.

Touch the SHIRO and it’s like nothing you’ve ever drawn or written with before. The diatomite-material, along with the SHIRO’s wavy texture are a complete tactile experience. The pen derives its name from the Japanese word for waves too, a reference not only to the unique wavy pattern on the pen’s body, but also the origin of the Diatomite material. Almost like holding an incredibly lightweight piece of stone, the SHIRO Drawing Pen feels equal parts light yet solid. The diatomite’s inherently porous nature also makes drawing/writing more comfortable, as the pen’s body absorbs moisture or perspiration on your hands, giving you an easy penning experience. Fitted with a graphite lead on the inside, the SHIRO is perfect for writing, sketching, and drawing plans. Whether it’s as small as a doodle in a notebook or a long as a detailed design sketch, SHIRO pulls you in with its incredible textured design, and keeps you in with its comfortable writing experience.

ATECH’s multifunctional seven-in-one pen is a marvel in itself. What starts off as a handy ballpoint pen goes on to reveal six more of its counterparts. Not only does it function as a ballpoint pen, but as a stylus for your smartphone and other touch screen devices, bottle opener, 2mm mini flat-head screwdriver, 2.5 mm Phillips screwdriver, smartphone stand, and a metric and inch ruler! It provides multiple solutions for your minute everyday problems! Crafted out of aluminum and copper, the tool is durable and easily portable, ensuring you don’t have to carry around your box full of heavy equipment here and there!

I can’t honestly grasp how I don’t have the Fume Marker Pen Stand and Package in my workspace already. Just a simple tinted transparent acrylic cube, the Fume acts as a rather beautiful pen-stand for your alcohol markers (something designers swear by). Its design doesn’t just have them laid out in an interesting format, it even allows you to segregate them by hue into three zones… One for color, one for warm grays, and one for cool grays. Love!
