An Automated LEGO Gift-Wrapping Machine: Move Over, Gift Bags

Because wrapping gifts is hard work but building incredibly complicated LEGO machines is a piece of cake, YouTubers TheBrickWall constructed this ‘LEGO Wrapping Factory,’ an automated gift wrapping station built entirely out of LEGO. The machine is capable of scanning a package to determine its dimensions, then cut, wrap and tape the gift in a manner that can only be described as way better than I could ever do.

It’s hard for me to even fathom the amount of ingenuity that goes into a LEGO build like this. I mean I can barely follow the instructions that come with a regular LEGO set, and this doesn’t even come with instructions – you have to figure the whole thing out on your own. For reference, the last time I built a piece of IKEA furniture I had a handful of bolts and an extra leg left over at the end.

Sure, you could build a complicated LEGO machine to do all your gift wrapping for you, or you could wrap presents the same way I’ve been doing for years: kindly asking your mom to do it for you. And if she’s unavailable there’s always plan B: keeping the gift for yourself.

Harry Potter Wrapping Paper Isn’t Just for Wizards

If you have a muggle in your life that is a big Harry Potter fan, here’s the perfect wrapping paper for your Christmas gifts. You’ll pay 15 bucks for two rolls of the stuff though – not exactly cheap when Walmart has five rolls for less than that price.

What Walmart doesn’t have are rolls of paper with the Hogwarts crest or Platform 9 3/4 Hogwarts Express pattern. Neither pattern is overly Christmas themed so if you don’t use it all, it would come in handy for birthdays or other occasions.

Each red and gold roll has 2.7 yards of paper on it; measuring in at 30″ x 96″. Cast a credit card spell and grab some now at ThinkGeek. This is probably better option for most folks than that sausage scented paper.

Jimmy Dean Sausage Scented Gift Wrap: Don’t Shake Your Boxes, Smell ‘Em

Nothing beats the smell of meat wafting up from under the Christmas tree. I’m just guessing that’s true, based on this gift wrap. I have no first-hand knowledge. I’ve never actually had meat under the tree. But if you want to incorporate some new aromas in between the cinnamon and pine of your holiday traditions, check out this wacky gift wrap that smells like Jimmy Dean sausage.

This holiday gift wrap from Jimmy Dean makes Christmas smell like breakfast. But to get yourself some, you have to submit a Jimmy Dean sausage recipe to their Recipe Gift Exchange and request the paper as your reward. You can also get a glass sausage tree ornament, a chef’s apron, or vinyl holiday music record. I’m not sure if those songs are about meat or not.

Jimmy Dean wants to make your holidays joyous and meat-filled. If it were up to Jimmy Dean, we’d leave some links and patties out for Santa instead of milk and cookies. I mean you might as well leave him a cold beer while you’re at it.

Also, I bet your dog eats your presents thinking there’s some tasty sausage inside.

Gift Wrapping and Christmas Tree Decorating Machines Do The Job Quick

Christmas is a magical time of year. Think about it. Some fat guy rides a sleigh led by reindeer – in the sky no less – lands on your roof, slides down your chimney and delivers you presents. For free! I call that magic! But the truth is that it’s not free. It’s a lot of work preparing for this holiday. Just wrapping the gifts and decorating the tree take quite a bit of time and energy. Luckily, Joseph Herscher of Joseph’s Machines has a solution.

Joe is an inventor of useless machines, but this time his machine is pretty handy. You see, Joe has created a solution to easily wrap presents. His invention uses a some notepads, a drill, a bicycle wheel, a roll of tape, and a length of rope. Seriously, that’s it. This will be a real timesaver at Christmas, or any time you need to wrap gifts – or sandwiches. He also demonstrates how a similar rig can help you quickly decorate your tree next year. Just be warned, things can get a little messy.

It takes a little trial and error, but ultimately, he’s able to decorate an entire tree in about 10 seconds.

Eco-Friendly Christmas: Plant Discarded Gift Wrap In Your Garden

Plantable Wrapping Paper

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It also happens to be a season of excessive waste, considering the amount of gift wrap and packaging people discard after unwrapping their presents.

Then along came Eden’s Paper and their plantable gift wrap. It’s eco-friendly wrapping paper that’s made from two layers of recycled paper. The cool thing about it is the fact that it’s got actual seeds embedded within the paper. So not only is it recyclable, but you can also plant the entire thing in your garden instead of discarding it.

The exterior pattern reflects what type of seeds are embedded in the paper. At the moment, there are five to choose from: broccoli, tomato, carrot, onion, and chili.

Eden’s Paper is currently raising funding for the gift wrap on Kickstarter. Back the project, and you can get one sheet of wrapping paper for £5 (about $8).

Meat Gift Wrap: Give the Gift of Unedible Meat

Meat Wrapping Paper

Just imagine the look on people’s faces when you hand them a huge, chunk of meat packed in styro and cellophane. They’ll say the obligatory “thank you’s” but it’ll take them a while to process the fact that you just gave them the present of raw meat. Of course, they’ll eventually figure it out and everyone will have a few laughs. On a side note, you can see the true measure of your friendship with them during those critical moments: will they scoff at your gift, or will they accept it wholeheartedly?

Kidding aside, this Meat Gift Wrap by Gift Couture takes novelty wrappers to the next level. The steak wrapping paper transforms any present into something that resembles class A meat. It also comes with a bunch of extras, like cutting board paper and meat trays to give it a more authentic, straight-from-the-butcher look.

It’s currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where $15 will get you a standard set which includes two sheets of steak paper and a sheet of cutting board paper. For $5 more, you can upgrade to the Grade A set, where you’ll get the standard set plus a sheet of white butcher paper, twine, a meat tray, and two gift labels.
