This herb garden was designed with smart monitoring tech & fits inside your kitchen cabinet to save space!

We have all killed a plant or two let’s just admit it. Gardening isn’t for everyone but it is sure nice to have fresh herbs to add to your meals. Imagine making a bomb pizza and realizing you don’t have basil (gasps!). To avoid such catastrophes even those of us without green thumbs do our best to keep herbs in our kitchen. The only drawback is that having five small pots takes up a lot of counter space and also can attract bugs. Leaving herbs out on the window is not an option because they won’t survive extreme weather and maybe birds will get to it before you do. But this herb garden design takes care of all these minor inconveniences while making sure your plants thrive!

The design lets you have access to fresh greenery 365 days a year without sacrificing any counter space or causing a mess. It is compact and works wonderfully for small urban apartments or big suburban houses. What makes this herb garden unique its compactness because it makes it invisible in your kitchen space. Designer Igor Abakumov drew inspiration from his own life experience for this. “My mom is a real culinary virtuoso and she often complains about the lack of specific greens in the store. And then I got the idea to design a home garden that will be built into the kitchen and will delight with greenery all year round,” he explains.

Simply named Home Garden, this nifty design is basically a herb drawer that is built into the kitchen. It comes with an integrated smart system that monitors the moisture and temperature of plants, as well as their freshness and readiness for use. It is 2021, so of course, all of this can be adjusted directly from your phone. Home Garden is one of the entries for the James Dyson Awards 2021.

This modular vertical garden was designed to be a self-watering, self-powered, space saver!

Do you, like me, wake up with an urge to add something in your home to elevate your interior design game since we are spending all our time indoors? I think the top items I gravitate towards are air purifiers (obvious reasons), kitchen essentials, sleep-inducing designs, and plants (special attention to those that need no managing!). I was super intrigued by Moltke which is a modular vertical garden designed for both interior and exterior use. Plants liven your home, purify your air, give you herbs if you choose to have some, and make you seem like an adult who has their life together as much as one can in a pandemic – making Moltke a perfect combination of some of my favorite things without sacrificing space!

There is an increasing need to grow fresh food in small spaces without having to devote too much time or effort. Vertical gardens in the market right now either lack functionality or are super expensive. Moltke was designed to give you an affordable indoor/outdoor garden that fits your aesthetic needs and is self-sufficient. “The main feature of this vertical garden is the ease of use. No prior experience required, just use the pre-planted seed pods and the self-watering system that requires no power – this will keep the plants self-sustained,” says Vintu. Parts of the structure are kept transparent to allow more light for the roots. It works for an indoor setting as well as outdoor because you don’t need any external power supply. The ‘growth light’ in each module ensures that the plants stay healthy even if there isn’t enough natural light.

You can also use the wastewater produced by air conditioning units to refill the water tanks. The mesh net on top makes sure that no debris gets inside your planters especially if it is outdoors. Modularity is becoming crucial in product designs so they can fit with our ever-changing flexible lifestyle. You can add as many units of Moltke as you want, and there are solutions for bigger needs as well like the 3L or 5L custom water tanks that will hold more modules for plants. Moltke gives you the premium planter features without the cost, need for extra electronic equipment, or components that are hard to mount/take up a lot of space. While it is unclear what kind of in-built power supply the design is using, it would be cool to make it solar powered!

These spice shakers embody the literal beauty of seasons and seasoning!

The Four Seasons shakers are quite literally perfection. Capturing four different types of seasoning, and embodying them in snow-globe-esque containers, Qualy Design’s Four Seasons shakers are just simply clever and adorable at the same time. Not only are they well designed, the absolutely witty wordplay makes the product even more lovable!

You’ve got four shakers that embody four different seasons, and hold four different seasonings. Designed for salt, pepper, dried herbs, and chili flakes, the shakers come with plants on the inside that pair well with the seasoning. The salt shaker has a fir tree, making the salt crystals look like snowflakes forming a rich white layer on the floor. The pepper shaker comes with a cactus inside, turning the shaker into an arid desert scene (make sure you use white pepper for proper effect!) For the dried herbs, you’ve got a regular fern, while the herbs look almost like a bed of aromatic grass, and lastly, the chili flakes shaker comes with a barren tree, making the flakes look like shed leaves in autumn. Sheer genius, isn’t it?!

Your Own Homegrown Veggie Zone

In today’s society, it’s easy to forget about eating the right things. There’s often a time I’ll find myself making a sandwich and look to the fridge for inspiration, only to be greeted with empty shelves and a packet of ham…bleak. I may be lucky to have a bag of mixed salad leaves which have not held up. With the use of urban gardens, aeroponics, and hydroponics – healthy eating is now more accessible as ever.

The AeroGarden Harvest Touch set out to make sure big city living, with all of the hustle and bustle, doesn’t mean neglecting the importance of a balanced diet. Diet isn’t the only importance regarding urban gardening, it’s a hugely important aspect in the future of sustainable farming.

The overall design for the indoor garden is warm and approachable. The form doesn’t threaten to dominate the interior layout/design of its environment. The indoor garden greets you with a large 360 open view space – which not only gives the impression of the garden taking up less space that one thinks but also giving the user a quick ‘one glance’ update on progress/growth.

AeroGarden’s Harvest Touch was designed to integrate seamlessly into a city dwelling environment, allowing anyone to grow their very own vegetables at home. The system is soil free and harnesses its growth through the use of 100 high power performance LED lights, enough for optimal growing conditions year round while sitting nicely on your countertop. There is an intuitive LCD display to help the user through every step of the way.

The Zero Degree inhaler is a modern twist on the ancient practice of aromatherapy to revitalize body and mind! Unlike slow absorption or ingestion methods, the design utilizes dry inhalation because it’s the quickest way to deliver stimulants directly to the brain. Its pocket-friendly, compact size also makes it a lot more convenient. With just a simple twist, air is able to enter through openings located at the back of the inhaler & flow past its unique blend of herbal extracts. Say Hello to Urb

Urb-Garden brings gardening into small, indoor urban environments in a sculptural and aesthetic way! The unique form is actually the result of a design project focused around safety. Users will find that the pots are at an ergonomic height to prevent back strain and the materials used are thoughtfully chosen to be lightweight or heavy where it matters. Check out the vid to see an extra, interactive feature of this ingenious planter!

The team sought to bring the joy of gardening into indoor urban homes with limited outdoor space. Urb-Garden is a collection of modular pieces that fit together at the concrete bases, creating a continuous row of plants; specifically herbs; that could have as many or as little as the space and user saw fit. The design is minimal in form, however the construction techniques are significantly more complex. The bases and exterior pots are made of fibrous (fiberglass) concrete to ensure the best strength-to-weight ratio, while each stem is made from 8 steam-bent and laminated pieces of Ash which not only has high structural capacity but is also beautiful. As well as this, the weight of the pots allow the stem to gently bend and sway when the user interacts with the pieces which adds a dynamic element to the design. The inner pots, that house the herbs, are made from spun aluminium and are easily removable from the concrete pots. This allows the user to remove the pots at will and put them on their kitchen bench if desired. Urb-Garden is detailed by a red felt base and a red edge on the aluminium pots; a colour chosen to provide an effective contrast with the plants.

Star Wars Death Star Grinder: Weapon of Herb Destruction

The Death Star isn’t all about destroying Alderaan. This space station will destroy herbs with the same massive power. It is the ultimate power in the universe and in your kitchen. Etsy seller Pyroteeze makes these so that you can easily and geekily grind up your herbs when cooking (or getting baked).

Each mini Death Star is made from non toxic polymer clay, and antiqued with a light black acrylic paint. The grinder measures about 2.5 inches across, which is a little smaller than a baseball. Both halves are held shut with a magnet that allows it to roll without falling apart. I also has a spot on the bottom that allows it to sit and not roll everywhere.

It will cost you $22(USD) and is totally worth it. After all, not everyone has a Death Star in their kitchen drawer.
