How The Energy Industry Is Using Data Management to Operate More Efficiently

Today, every industry, including the energy industry, produces an almost inexhaustible supply of data. While other industries may have been quicker to determine how to analyze and leverage that data, however, the energy industry has lagged somewhat behind them. Collecting data may be the first step of data management, but the real value of data is uncovered when it is analyzed and used to draw insights and help predict future performance. As the energy industry, including oil and gas, begins to more fully embrace data management and analytics, it is benefitting the industry in numerous ways. Data can be used…

40 Years of LEGO Minifigures

Can you believe that the LEGO minifigure is officially 40 years old? Humanoid LEGO figures were introduced in 1975, but they had no faces and no moveable limbs, then in 1978 they began to look like the articulated minifigures we have now. Ever since then these yellow figures have remained largely unchanged. They have made minor changes since then of course, with things like hair pieces, double faces, specialized designed, and then even tinier microfigures.

If you want to learn more about the history of these cool figures you can check out an infographic that LEGO posted that takes you through the entire 40 years of LEGO minifigure history. It might teach you a few things that you didn’t know, like how they made a sweet glow-in-the-dark ghost minifig back in 1990.

Since their original release four decades ago, hundreds of millions of kids have played with these figures, and many adults have collected them. To date, LEGO has produced over 4 billion minifigures in more than 8,000 different designs. That’s pretty crazy. I had no idea that there were that many different ones. I bet very few collectors have one from each of those designs, but there are probably a handful of them out there.

Death Star Would Cost All the Money to Run for One Day

I never really put much thought into what it would cost to actually make and operate the things we see in sci-fi movies. Take the Death Star for instance. It never crossed my mind to think about how much it would cost to build. Estimates peg that cost at $852 quadrillion bucks if you are wondering.

As it turns out, the cost of building the Death Star would be a drop in the ocean of money it would take to run the thing on a daily basis. You can check out the infographic below and see more detail, and to find out just how much it would cost to operate.

Ovo Energy got help from real scientists, and they estimate that it would cost £6 octillion (~$7.58 octillion USD) daily to power the Death Star. I don’t even know how many zeros that would be. What we do know is the amount is 30 trillion times more money than there is on all of the Earth. Good going, Darth.

What is the Fastest Ship in the Universe (Infographic)

Infographic Photo

The New Horizons sattelite needed 10 years to reach Pluto from Earth. But how long would it have taken some of the most famous ships we know from fictional works?

According to the calculations, it would have probably been faster to send the Millenium Falcon or the Plant Express ship from Futurama in order to take the pictures from the distant planet.

Alas, they weren’t available to NASA at the time, and so they sent something slower to cover the distance from Earth to the edge and a bit beyond of our Solar System.

What’s the distance? Well, because of Pluto’s orbit, at its furthest it’s 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) from us. When the two planets are at their closest, they’re only 2.66 billion miles (4.28 billion km) apart.

History of the Sony Walkman (Infographic)

If you can believe it, The Sony Walkman has been around for 36 years now. In fact, the player was born on July 1, 1979. In celebration of the Walkman, Sony put together this handy infographic which shows the evolution of the music player.

Its original TPS-L2 incarnation is still its most iconic design, and has turned into quite the collectible these days. But over the years, Sony continued to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of music formats, later releasing a CD Walkman (I remember having to save up for a while to buy the D-20 Discman when it came out), and later with digital players, and even models which are built into headphones.

I’m particularly interested in their new hi-res audio players, which are supposed to sound much better than typical MP3 players. And I wish I had saved my original Walkman so I could listen to my old ’80s mixtapes.
