This sleek drone fits in your pocket and transforms uses its magnetic modular design!

The rise of drone photography and videography has opened the door to plenty of technological and design advancements. Likewise, with the rise of social media, drones have seen some major improvements across the board, spanning from obstacle avoidance to camera quality and speed. Adding portability to the list, industrial designer Kendal Toerner conceptualized Xenon Drone, a handheld and modular drone designed for the most rugged of adventures.

Xenon Drone was first designed for the drone videographer looking for a drone that’s as durable as it is portable. Noticing the lack of handheld and high-quality drones on the market, Toerner sought to balance functionality and space. Broken down into three pieces, Xenon Drone is made from recyclable, plant-based thermoplastic and features a magnetic launching pad wedged between two drone modules. To communicate Xenon’s portability and simplicity, Toerner designed the drone to be versatile in its assembly, resulting in three different possible forms for flying and stacking achieved via magnetic connectors.

Getting Xenon Drone out of your hands and into the sky is simple—users need only attach the two drone modules at their center magnetic grooves, connect their propellers, and let it fly. One end of each module contains the chunk of embedded electronic wiring; the other end holds Xenon Drone’s triple-axis gimbal camera and batteries. But, while getting it up in the air is exciting, Toerner didn’t lose sight of the importance of a safe landing. Embedded with ultrasonic sensors, Xenon Drone depends on a magnetic landing wand to guide its safe descent—by raising the magnetic wand, Xenon Drone can land safely no matter where it flies from.

Users can also control Xenon Drone’s route from their smartphones using an elastic joystick controller that can adapt to almost any smartphone. From your smartphone, Xenon Drone’s joystick controller displays the drone’s altitude, distance, and velocity, as well as the haptic joystick and pan controls. In addition, integrated GPS technology and Bluetooth connectivity allow users to locate Xenon Drone wherever it lands.

Broken down into two parts, each module of the Xenon Drone attaches at its magnetic center.

A launching pad was wedged between the two modules to ensure an effective takeoff.

Embedded magnetic springs pluck out to deploy each drone module.

After the two modules connect, propellers are attached before Xenon can take flight.

Users need only attach the two modules and connect their respective propellers.

An elastic joystick controller allows users to choose Xenon’s route.

“By modulating an electromagnetic force on your fingertip, the flat surface of the controller feels just like a joystick. The further from the center, the more resistance. This allows for eyes-off flying, mitigating finger-drifting issues,” Toerner notes.

“Using the onboard transceiver, GPS, and Bluetooth, the exact location of the two drone parts is always known even when they separate.”

“A camera with a triple-axis gimbal allows for optical image stabilization and manual panning. Having both a wide-angle and telephoto lens allows for unique options when capturing adventures.”

“A thermoplastic, layer-based circuit board can be decoupled from its components with a hot liquid solvent, allowing for reuse and recycle of almost every part. Xenon is manufactured using renewable energy, plant-based thermoplastic, (recyclable) metal, and can be fully disassembled because it uses fasteners and a removable thermal adhesive.”

The Tesla Model B is an electric bicycle concept that’s futuristic on the inside and out

If I had to condense Tesla‘s ethos into a single phrase, it would arguably be to bring advanced technologies to the world of automotives to make transportation efficient, safe, and convenient. Whether it’s the electric powertrains, the efficient batteries, the advanced hardware/software, or the fact that Tesla is spearheading the self-driving movement, it’s safe to say that the company has gone above and beyond to change the face of how we get from A to B. In that very vein, the Tesla Model B concept by Kendall Toerner brings Tesla’s advanced approach to the category of bicycles.

The Model B forms a bridge between conventional bicycles and road-vehicles, with a design that, like cars, is designed to be safer, more efficient, and less energy-intensive. The Model B’s sleek frame comes with forward, side-facing, and rear proximity and LiDAR sensors that scan the surroundings to create a protective bubble around the rider, alerting them of any obstacle. Each wheel comes with its own dedicated motor, forming the Model B’s dual-drive system. Spokes on the wheels are replaced by shock-absorbers, helping keep your ride smooth.

The frame of the e-bike also integrates foldout footrests and handlebars. The handlebars don’t independently rotate, but rather detect force, allowing you to turn by simply applying more force on a particular side. The front-wheel turns independently, based on handle force input. The Model B also comes with its own autopilot feature that lets the bike’s own AI take over, using the multiple sensors on its frame as its eyes to maneuver the bicycle safely. A slick dashboard sits flush within the bike’s frame, allowing you to see bike stats as well as set navigation for your own reference, or for the Tesla autopilot. The Model B sports a stormtrooper color combo of white with black accents, although I’d love to see one with a nice hot red paint job!

This air-powered outdoor survival device keeps you enroute, hydrated and safe!

The great outdoors – a treasure we all miss right now and one we must protect when we step out into our new normal in the future. Adventures always happen outside and A1R is an outdoor gadget that was specifically designed to inspire you to enjoy nature, grow with the environment, and gain a new perspective. While it was originally created for intermediate outdoor enthusiasts, it can actually be used by beginners as well and help them fall in love with nature.

A1R Powered Outdoor Gear gives you the tools that let you enjoy your hike or camping trip peacefully because you are equipped with a problem-solving gadget. Personally, I am someone who will panic if I am in a forest and things don’t go as planned so having like this on me is very reassuring as opposed to being left to survive with a map, compass, and my phone (which is probably in single-digit battery levels). A1R is a weatherproof device fueled by renewable energy source, air/wind, that lasts for days and serves the purpose of a navigator, power bank, tracker, water/snow/saltwater purifier, and an emergency beacon. Its basically a sleek and sustainable Jarvis for any camper.

When you feel well-equipped to deal with unplanned events is when you are more willing to take risks – this is where the actual growth happens and the user’s horizons expand not just physically in the outdoors but also as a person. A1R takes into account all elements that should be in an all-rounder survival gadget – it bridges the urban-outdoor gap, is mindful of using sustainable materials, focuses on empowering the user with new experiences and self-actualization. Let’s go on a design adventure to see how this concept was developed and all the features it has to reduce panic and increase peace!

Designer: Kendall Toerner and Alexander Ordonez

A1R Powered Outdoor Tools help outdoor enthusiasts enter the stretch zone, enabling them to discover and push their boundaries. It takes care of the 5 elements that can cause panic when you are on an adventure and gives you one device that works for your physical and digital needs thereby reducing the things you have to carry or keep a track of!

A1R solves the issues one faces during camping or exploring outdoors for days – it is reliable, durable, provides battery instead of draining it, keeps you connected with your group, and most importantly, keeps you hydrated in any situation. It is versatile and flexible to your needs while reducing the number of essentials you have to carry by providing the features in one portable device.

The portable device is made to be handheld and can expand as per your needs. It is ergonomic and fits with the modern, minimal aesthetic, unlike the existing outdoor tech tools. Its capsule-like slim build saves space in your backpack for other essentials.

The 3000 PSI compressed air module powers devices through both electrical and mechanical potential, and is much more reliable and sustainable than batteries because it’s durable, unaffected by cold temperatures or weather, and made of all recyclable materials.

Being powered by air means the downside of batteries are eliminated and as technology advances, every industry should consider using renewable energy sources to create long-lasting products that are also compatible with a sustainable lifestyle.

Use the accompanying pump on long journeys to recharge the power source anywhere at any time. 60 seconds of pumping provides 5 days of water purification, 3 days of navigation, 24 hours of communication, or a full headlamp charge.

You never have to worry about losing your trail, A1R takes into account offline navigation and has a very simple UI to keep it user-friendly because the last thing you need when you are lost is trying to figure out how to use a device that can help you. The aim is to reduce panic and not increase it.

During unprecedented circumstances, we can go without food but clean water is the most crucial essential. A1R lets you purify water anywhere and store up to 12 oz in the appliance and fill up 16 oz bottle one at a time. It works on purifying snow and saltwater too which makes it a versatile gadget to take to any outdoor setting.

The filter is durable and designed to last without needing to be replaced often. It also won’t break in freezing temperatures.

In case of emergencies, A1R enables you to send out a call for help with its beacon feature. It launches a 99% biodegradable balloon with a cellular radio that will have your initial GPS coordinates so first responders can get to your accurate location for help.

Stay connected at all times and find your friends if you are lost. A1R is powered by a supercapacitor and a GPS chip that will help you navigate through an antenna and ultra-low-power transceiver. Just tap and instantly charge the supercapacitor.

The Xenon Adventure Drone is an ultra-portable alternative that aims to make the setup process a cinch so you can do more playing and less assembling. Better yet, it’s simple to store and transport so it will be ready when you are.

The design is made possible by stacking sections that attach magnetically. Just snap the black and white pieces together and the drone will be prepared to fly. A third section acts as both a storage container for the drone and a launching platform that can be held in the hand. As for the control element, it attaches onto any smartphone, augmenting the display with surface haptics that provides a tactile, dynamic, flat surface, replicating a joystick. Here, users can view and control its 3-axis gimbal stabilized camera which unfolds during flight to record 4k video and photos.

The Xenon Adventure Drone is a winner of the 2018 Red Dot Design Concept Award.
