NINI AMICI is a new set of small toys made of elmwood. There are only ten pieces, but the toy set is modular, so you can make more toys. It uses a magnetic connector system to attach different parts to make different animals.

Three base bodies can work as the tail, head, or hump. Kids can make most of the known animals, but you can also create new ones depending on the children’s imaginative play. You can call the pieces that connect with magnets as NINIs.

What’s more remarkable about the NINIs are the people who make them. The toys are made in Upper Franconia, Germany in a workshop for people with mental and physical disabilities. They are fairly produced and special because of the special people who make them.

This biodegradable children’s building block game is made entirely from recycled rice husks

Rice Husk Village is a modular toy game made entirely from discarded rice husk waste.

On a yearly basis, around 120 million tons of rice husks are discarded worldwide. The husk is the plant material that covers rice grains, which is ultimately discarded because humans do not digest it. highly resistant to natural degradation, rice husk has a large dry volume due to their low-bulk density and rough surfaces.

Looking at this issue from an environmentalist’s perspective, designer, Subin Cho conceptualized a children’s toy called Rice Husk Village made entirely from rice husk to turn agricultural waste into meaningful products that can ultimately be composted back into the ground.

Cho notes, “Rice husk has large dry volume due to its low bulk density and possesses rough and abrasive surfaces that are highly resistant to natural degradation.” From an environmental perspective, this reveals why rice husks can be difficult to dispose of, but from a designer’s perspective, this plant material is ideal for creating products like the Rice Husk Village.

Constructed and molded from rice husks, the Rice Husk Village is comprised of shaped modules that stack together to form villages. Three different building types allow users to create different city fabrics, from skyscraper-filled skylines to small villages. A four-legged bridge, tree modules, and stairs also come with Rice Husk Village so users can really create their own unique toy village.

Cho’s design also features a balance tray that users can build their villages atop as an interactive game. The game’s initiative is to create a well-balanced, and bustling village fabric from the toys blocks made from rice husks.

If the village topples over to one side on the balance tray, then whoever touched the last block loses, in a similar fashion to the game Jenga. Considering the rice husk modules, the toy blocks are biodegradable and safe for the human body to consume on the off chance your toddler is getting a little chewy.

Children can even add a touch of greenery to their miniature village replicas. 

Once play time is over, the building blocks can be put back into the earth to be composted. 

Similar to the game of Jenga, Rice Husk Village is a stacking game. 

Children will have an array of different modular toy blocks to choose from when constructing their village.

Cardboard pieces come to life with this DIY Robotic kit for kids in collaboration with OPPO

It’s difficult to ideate a future that doesn’t involve technology running the show. It’s the inevitable way forward and some designers are getting creative with ways to gear the youth up for it. Smartphones might seem practically as common for a kid these days as the shoes on their feet. The language of cloud services and smart technology is somehow integrated into many children’s daily life, however, the language of mechanical operation is often lost. Sarah Willemart and Matthieu Muller of Studio Fantasio designed their children’s toy, Animate, with OPPO, the smartphone company, in order to provide younger people with a tangible lesson regarding the development of fine motor skills, kinesthetic learning, and the inner workings of electronic systems.

Animate is a creative kit designed for children between the ages of four and eight who want to bring their imagination to life through technological construction. Animate allows children to become both the creators and players of their very own robotic toys. Animate comes with a plethora of electronic and crafty elements including an ultrasonic sensor to keep track of movement, information, and environment, a microphone, two DC motors, a vibrator that jiggles the robot, a battery-operated LED light that plugs into the easy board, and charges by USB-C cables, a set of connectors that work like gears, nuts, and bolts to attach templates and cardboard components, a methodology booklet, and lastly, cables to plug in all the components.

The ultrasonic sensor, vibrator, and DC motors work to bring the robotic creation to life, mobilize it, and make it more dynamic of a toy for children, heightened each of the five senses. Each electronic element was exaggerated in size and color in order to make the construction process more approachable and exciting for children and also to give the electronic robot some character, making it distinguishable against other children’s toys. Additionally, each of the robot’s components and modules can be switched out for one another in order to enhance and diversify interactions between the creator and the finished cardboard-mechanical toy.

The colorful and wacky design of the electronic components offer familiarity for young users and the designers behind Animate chose to implement the use of cardboard in order to further the product’s approachability. By including the use of cardboard, children will learn about and recognize the potential and accessibility of sustainable design and the zany connectors and cables that run through each final electronic design will keep children engaged for years to come.
