DJI Mavic Mini review: A tiny drone with big ambitions

What a difference four years make in the world of drones. If you spot someone with an iPhone 6s today, you'd barely flinch. But if you see someone rocking a Phantom 3, it feels quaint thanks to the major advances in size, weight and power. Enter the...

A Minuscule Drone that Packs a Punch

If you’ve had your head in the clouds for the last few years, then you’re probably unaware that last year, when the DJI released the Spark Drone, it blew all of our minds. At a staggering .6 pounds in weight which was just nuts! Albeit the quality was never anywhere close to the Mavic Pro, sure, but it was hardly a burden to carry an extra .6 pounds around with you right? Well the good guys at DJI have gone another step into the future and provided us with the most dynamic three-axis gimbal assisted drone, the Mavic Air, weighing around 1 pound and has the ability to shoot videos in a stunning 4K.

The pictures of this are insane, its minuscule, how on earth can these be jam-packed full of goodness, capture insanely high-quality images and yet be about the same size as a pea. Not to mention it’s brilliantly smart – there are seven additional cameras on the Mavic Air that sense objects during flight, to the front and the rear of the drone, and work it’s own mapping around this to prevent a collision. Having trouble walking through the house without bumping into a door, it’s a shame I don’t have seven cameras. This little guy has a range of up to 2.5 miles and a 21 minute fly time, with a nifty remote to fit into the back pocket when it’s not being occupied by the Mavic Air.

DJI Mavic Air Drone: A 4K, Foldable, Gimbal-stabilized Flying Machine

DJI has officially launched its new Mavic Air drone, and this model brings with it some of the best features of DJI’s Mavic Pro and Spark drones at an affordable price. The DJI Mavic Air has a 1/2.3 inch sensor that will record 4K video at 24 or 30 frames per second. It can also shoot 12 megapixel stills with a wide angle 24mm f2.8 lens. And that’s just the beginning. There’s a lot to like about this new model.

The foldable design takes cues from both the Mavic Pro and the Spark. It will fold up small enough that it can easily fit in a jacket pocket. This version is also much lighter than its predecessors. It’s 41 percent lighter than the Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air has a max speed of up to 42.5 miles per hour against 22 mile per hour winds. It also sports a 2.5 mile visual line of sight range and it comes with a new remote that docks with your smartphone.

Other features include a new ventilation system to prevent overheating, a new 3-axis gimbal casing for the camera for smooth video, a seven-camera obstacle avoidance system, 8GB of onboard storage and a USB-C port. There are also several new shooting modes, one of which lets users take 32 megapixel panoramas, and improved image processing. Naturally due to the size and features, there’s not a ton of air time. It can fly for up to 21 minutes. Not bad considering all of the features here, but we want more.

You can get the Mavic Air in Onyx Black, Arctic White, and Flame Red for $799. Pre-orders start today via DJI’s online store. They will ship on January 28th.
