This slim wall cabinet opens into a sleek, modern, functional workspace!

Nils Holger Moorman presents ‘der vorstand’, a slender wall cabinet that transforms into a multifunctional think tank, creating the sense of space whenever users need it. The structure features a back wall on wheels that rolls out with a single pull to reveal a work desk with integrated bookshelves and a top light at the center. The project seeks to provide maximum atmosphere and minimum surface area at the same time.

Unlike any other sleek wall cabinet, ‘der vorstand’ by Moorman can easily unfold into a small, yet convenient workspace. The fold-out ceiling creates a sense of space, affords light, and connects the essentials: the back wall mounted on wheels with its magnetic exterior and the desk at the center. In keeping with the trusted Moorman ordering principle, everything has its designated place: from pens to the books and the binders, while the electronic devices can be charged with hidden cables. In addition, a curtain can be added to the side and the illumination of the ceiling and workspace can be adjusted to the users’ personal preferences.

‘der vorstand’ was initially designed as a submission to a design competition, and since then this winner model has ventured out on its own as an independent room-in-room solution. The first prototype was developed and built by Moorman’s in-house designers following the ideals of lead designer Nils Holger Moorman. Surfaces and materials are reduced to the basics: solid ash wood and light beige linoleum where hands and eyes rest or work in concentration; black surfaces and quiet restraint where nothing should distract the users. Precise details for storing, cabling, and locking the fold-out mechanism convey integrity and guarantee self-assured performance on the executive level.

‘we are in search of furniture creations based on a special idea. Sometimes absurd, sometimes brilliant, sometimes a detail, sometimes a revolution. Typically a minimalist formal language with a high level of experience – but always with a subtle twinkle in the eye’ shares the Moorman team. When the professional slips into the private sphere, then the convertible ‘der vorstand’ piece comes in to maintain order at home. It helps generate a private space according to occupants’ needs and wishes, or otherwise, it closes discreetly and retreats elegantly into the background.

This modular office solution fuses collaboration with privacy to create cubicles ideal for returning back to work!

As parts of the world slowly open their doors back up to the public, offices are steadily following suit– eager to get back to the ‘old normal.’ As we re-enter office buildings and social hubs of which we haven’t been inside for over a year, many are holding tight onto COVID-19 protocols and mandates to ensure the health and wellness of those inside the building. With this in mind, Mexico City-based NOS Design Studio created Hug, a modular office solution that encourages collaboration, but not without the protective barriers and private working zones born out of necessity during the pandemic.

While the topic of normalcy is moot, this upcoming transition into what some might call a post-COVID world carries with it a fusion of design– the maximum occupancy number might be thrown out the window in some areas, but the plastic barriers might not. NOS Design’s Hug is a modular, collaborative office solution with a cubicle-inspired design that allows for face-to-face interaction and maintains privacy via plastic barriers that surround each module. Each individual module that comprises Hug can be put together to form round cubicles using a relatively simple assembly process. A single Hug cubicle is formed by attaching multi-layered panels to the module’s sofa base by using washers and nuts to connect each piece.

The sofa keeps a power unit in its center that functions as a sort of cornerstone for the rest of the module to assemble. Lumbar support panels and cushioned seats with underlying storage units border the power unit to form the cubicle’s bench. Then, a metallic frame rounds the perimeter of the bench, creating an exterior barrier consisting of privacy screens, as well as wooden and fabric panels. Attached to the bottom of each module, four wheels allow for the cubicles to be moved around office spaces wherever workers see fit. Workers can also configure each individual module into a shape that coincides with their specific collaborative process, allowing for modules to connect and grow with other modules to create new office environments.

Each Hug module forms a round cubicle, creating private work zones and protective barriers.

Each module can also function as a collaborative working zone.

Four wheels tread the bottom of Hug to allow movement around the office.

Power units function as each module’s cornerstone, forming the rest of the cubicle around them.

Different configurations can transform office spaces into totally new environments.

Each module consists of a sofa bench, wooden and fabric exterior panels, and a metal frame that adds support and stabilizes the panels.

Each component of Hug is put together using a system of nuts and washers.

Lumbar support panels add cushioned support for workers.

Depending on the office, each module can be customized with different exterior panels, such as wooden, fabric, and plastic panels.

Workers can configure Hug according to the collaborative space needed.

A power unit provides a place for workers to charge their phones and carry drinks, while a swinging table provides working space.

Shelving units and cork panels create spaces for workers to store their supplies and get creative with new ideas.

Beneath the benches, plenty of storage space can be found for bulkier items like briefcases and purses.

These 3D printed modular offices are built from recycled PET plastic for a sustainable workspace solution!

Inspired by the prefabricated cabins and work-from-home solutions coming out of the pandemic, designers across the globe are coming up with their own answers to local office problems. In Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport, warehouses often lack demarcated and comfortable offices for their workers, pushing ArchiTech Company to collaborate with Royal 3D and the Port of Rotterdam Authority and come up with a solution. Finding one in R-IGLO, the new office zones resemble the shape of igloos and are 3D-printed using the waste that comes from Rotterdam’s local ports.

In making R-IGLO, ArchiTech Company joined arms with Royal 3D to create igloo-like workspaces that are made from recycled PET plastic, a material that can be reused plenty of times over. Currently undergoing redevelopment, an important harbor in Rotterdam called M4H is where the team behind R-IGLO sources all the material used during the 3D printing process. Once the materials needed for printing are acquired, the construction of each R-IGLO workspace takes place in M4H as well. The R-IGLO units are built by linking together 3D-printed panels that can later be disassembled, stored, and transported just as easily as they were put together. Since each R-IGLO structure comprises several modules, owners can decrease or increase the size of their R-IGLO by swapping out different sized modules.

R-IGLO was conceived in order to solve the lack of working spaces in Rotterdam’s M4H district, where many of the warehouses require more working zones. Reinforcing the PET plastics with short glass fibers during the 3D printing process, each igloo-like workspace is durable and rigid on the outside and creates soft acoustics on the inside. Better yet, each R-IGLO is printed from a CFAM machine, one of the world’s largest printers, printing the entire igloo-like structure in a mere ten days.

Locally sourced and built inside the warehouses of MFH’s port, R-IGLO is a large-scale 3D printed solution for workspaces.

With a rigid, solid exterior, R-IGLO keeps noise out while the interior provides some soft acoustics.

Each R-IGLO comes in modules so the overall size can be enlargened or reduced according to the worker’s needs.

Printed off CFAM printers, R-IGLO structures can be built in a short matter of ten days.

Coming included with light sockets and interior heating, each R-IGLO represents what the designers call, “a modular turn-key solution.”

This modular desk system for offices creates plenty of different configurations by working just like scrabble!

Like it or not, for many of us, the spaces where we work affect the quality of our work. Whether you’re working on a personal film project for hours on end or endlessly typing in order to meet a deadline, our physical space affects our mental space. This can get a little tricky when we’re working in office spaces simply because there’s more to work with: more space, more furniture, more people. Shift Studio, a design firm based in Monterrey, Mexico devoted to holistic problem-solving, recently debuted a large-scale answer to office design woes, with their modular desk system for workspace environments.

Desko is an adaptive and modular workspace solution for today’s ever-changing and multi-functional offices. Desko’s “desking” system represents a low-SKU-based design, which means it comprises few variant parts, prioritizing a multitude of office arrangements over different single desk variations. Opting for a low-SKU-based design also means that Desko takes up less space in storage and requires fewer parts for assembly and setup. In order to accommodate offices of varying sizes from the small, one-room startup office to larger corporate buildings, Desko’s “desking” system can easily be reduced or added upon depending on an office’s needs. With the ability to acclimate to any given office setup, the makers at Shift Studio say, “The Desko ‘desking’ system is based on the availability of 12 SKUs that enable the creation of 500+ workspace solutions that range from simple desks, to telemarketing solutions, [and from] ‘L’ and ‘H’ shapes to conference tables and virtually any shape.”

In order to attach one table to another table, a removable support metal beam securely fastens one desk with another and so on. Since all the tables are quadrilateral in shape, they latch onto one another much like how we move around in tile-based video games. Each desk also caters to office electronics thanks to the built-in desk hole grommets that allow room for cables and wires to plug into nearby sockets. While the desks generally look pretty uniform, Shift Studio included different surface options to indulge those who prefer warmer wooden desks over glacial steel. These surface options range from prism white, light grey, dark grey, natural oak, urban ash, and imperial walnut. Assembly and setup for Desko won’t involve any drills, hammers, or screwdrivers – all you’ll need are your own two hands, a few nuts and bolts, and some help from coworkers.

These air-ventilated and soundproof modular meeting room are here to improve those laggy Zoom meetings!

Work meetings during the age of COVID-19 have changed. Despite all of the memes about sitting in a meeting that could have been an email, the acute need for collaborative workspaces remains. The value of in-person collaboration has become that much more obvious with the onset of stay-and-work from home orders and teams of designers across the globe have issued solutions that both address and transcend the immediate needs brought on by the pandemic. The creatives at Room, a design firm dedicated to rethinking the modern workplace, developed their own solution for the changing needs of the modern workplace with their latest modular meeting room design.

ROOM’s Meeting Room is a soundproof and air-ventilated external collaborative pod that can be placed almost anywhere in order to provide a meeting space that works for business meetings or presentations that require privacy. Silent fans located in The Meeting Room’s roof provide silent air-ventilation to keep the air fresh and moving for longer work meetings. Built as a prefabricated office pod, The Meeting Room comes equipped with all the office essentials such as a whiteboard, round table, integrated powerbox for charging, and even storage units like shelves and wooden boxes. The Meeting Room can be placed in any setting from preexisting office spaces to crowded spacious coffeeshops and it requires no construction for assembly. Just like those old phone booths, The Meeting Room provides a soundproof space with 27 decibels of outside noise reduction so that it can operate as a private working space or conference room for confidential matters. The Meeting Room’s powerbox comes complete with 3 AC outlets, two USB-A ports, one USB-C port, two CAT6 data ports, 1 HDMI port, and a camera connection for its Jabra’s 180-degree PanaCast. Additionally, the external pod’s lighting can be adjusted for dimming or brightening to fit different types of collaboration such as presentations or brainstorming.

In-person collaboration cannot be replaced by technological developments or virtual workdays, but while some try and figure out the ways by which it can be, adaptive workplace designs like the modular Meeting Room from ROOM offer a physical means for collaboration in the meantime. Outfitted to be a microcosm of the office buildings we’ve grown accustomed to, The Meeting Room delivers the conveniences that come with them and promotes both the economic sensibility and sustainability that comes with thinking modular.
