Disco Ball Helmets: For Dangerous Dance Parties

These unique crash helmets are decorated in the style of a disco ball, handmade and sold by Etsy shop Disco2Disco. Each helmet features a retractable visor and is not VDOT approved for road wear. That’s a shame too, because how else are you supposed to let other motorists know you’re the life of the highway party?

Available in all silver, a combination of silver with some rose gold, or all rose gold, the helmets are available in sizes S – XL and cost around $200. A small price to pay to instantly be the center of attention for any gathering you attend (or crash), particularly any weddings or funerals.

Now it just needs an integrated sound system and orbiting spotlight and you’re a human disco party! And who hasn’t dreamed of being a mobile disco party on two feet? I know as a kid it’s what I always dreamed about being when I grew up. That or a dinosaur.

These Fuzzy Cartoon and Video Game Character Helmet Covers Are Born to Be Wild

Riding a motorcycle: part of the whole image is looking cool. And what’s cooler than a fuzzy Pikachu or Yoda head helmet cover? I can’t think of anything. Granted I don’t ride a motorcycle because I never learned how to ride a bicycle without training wheels, but balance is a tricky thing.

Available from Etsy shop FunnyHelmetCovers, these fuzzy faces are available in a variety of characters from cartoons and video games and range in price from $48 to $70 depending on the complexity of the design. I want one that makes me look like Donkey Kong so it makes sense when I throw barrels at tailgaters.

I’m personally tempted to buy the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Leonardo design, and I don’t even own a motorcycle helmet. Although – I do have an unusually large head. My wife likes to joke me about it, but I tell her it’s so big because there’s so much brain in there. Then we both have a good laugh knowing just how untrue that really is.

LightMode for Motorcycle Helmets: Glow on the Shell

The disco ball motorcycle helmet we spotted a couple of years ago will make you stand out in more ways than one, but you’re screwed if you’re riding in a dark area. Thomas Plywaczewski recently took to Kickstarter to present LightMode, an electroluminescent kit that can make your helmet more visible at night.

LightMode has two do-it-yourself kits. One has both electroluminescent tape and wire while the other only has  electroluminescent wire. Both kits will also come with adhesive, mounting aids and a small controller that runs on two AA batteries. The controller lets you toggle the tape or wire between off, on and blink modes. Thomas will also make instructional videos to help you attach LightMode to your helmet.

The cycling revolution: SKULLY Smart Motorcycle Helmet

Smart-Motorcycle-Helmet

A car has space for smart devices and gadgets, but a motorcycle not so much. Where there’s space, it’s gotta count, and the helmet seems the perfect place for it.

Gadgets & motorcyclists can still potentially happen if the team behind the SKULLY concept have it their way: this is a next-gen smart helmet that does more than protecting the wearer, as it incorporates some of that technology that up until now didn’t seem compatible with bikes, such as rearview cameras and GPS navigation systems.

As of now, the SKULLY is looking to be funded at Indiegogo, where it has already raised the initial pledge of $250,000, and ready to start production. Still, it has 29 days to go, and many features that could possibly be added with more pledges.

Make no mistake: the SKULLY is no cheap toy, as the initial required pledge to actually receive one is $1399 USD, but it has plenty of features to justify that price. From the aforementioned GPS and rear-view cameras to software that allows hands-free calling, integrated audio (yes, on a motorcycle!) and Internet via pairing with your own phone, the SKULLY is meant to replace every other gadget you could possibly need while on the road. Check the video below these lines to learn more.

Official Halo Master Chief Motorcycle Helmet: Safety Evolved

We’ve seen a Master Chief motorcycle helmet before, but that was made by a fan and is not road legal. But start saving Halo fans, because next year NECA will release an official and DOT-approved Master Chief motorcycle helmet. All-weather motorcycle helmet heats and cools your face

Bob Averill, who introduced us to the world of underwater hamster care, had a couple of other projects to show us during our visit to Portland, Oregon, including the All-Weather Motorcycle Helmet. What, you ask, makes a motorcycle helmet "all-weather?" Why, built-in heating and cooling, of course. Averill started with a standard Vega modular helmet, adding an evaporative cooler powered by a solar panel on top. The cooler pulls air from an intake on the helmet's side, sucking up more air at higher speeds and blowing it through a sponge, across the wearer's face. When things get too cold, there's a heater built into the liner, created from a heated mouse pad and powered by a lithium battery. Averill is looking to get the project mass-produced, but that's easier said than done, when it comes to a safety products like this -- and Kickstarter, apparently, isn't playing ball. Check out a video of the helmet after the break.
