This hybrid camping accessory combines a handheld flashlight with a multi-port power bank!

The M-flashlight is an EDC camping accessory that fuses the function of a flashlight with a rectangular power bank to light your way from waypoint to waypoint, never losing power along the way.

When camping, multifunctional appliances are key to thriving in nature. Nonelectric accessories like multi-tools and hatchets help users prepare for and build fires, pitch tents and chop wood during camping trips. Then, gas-powered and battery-operated appliances help finish the jobs like cooking meals and brewing coffee.

The M-Flashlight from designer Wenhua Xu combines the most practical aspects of camping supplies to create a portable, handheld flashlight that doubles as a power bank to charge up any device that might need some extra power.

Equipped with a 10000mAh high-capacity battery, the M-Flashlight is comprised of a round, miniature flashlight that fuses with a rectangular power bank to charge up devices like smartphones and other electronic appliances. Located at the top of the flashlight, a sliding dial turns the appliance on and off. Then, around the back, users will find the ports for USB, HDMI, and Type C cables.

During camping trips, we might need our smartphones during hiking or road trips to find our location or our next route of action. Considering this, our smartphones must have enough charge to get us there. The M-flashlight ensures the camper in each of us that we’ll never be without direction or light to bring us to our next destination.

Handheld by design, the M-Flashlight is an EDC camping accessory.

The rectangular power bank gives the M-flashlight an unconventional shape.

A sliding toggle operates the power switch.

Conceptualized in two different colors, the M-Flashlight comes in purple and orange tones.

A staggered green roof gives this educational building organic architecture with sustainable building practices!

Envisioned in Indore, India by Sanjay Puri Architects, Prestige University is a mixed-use educational building that combines sustainable building practices with organic architecture.

With plans for a 100-acre university campus in the works, Sanjay Puri Architects completed the designs for the campus’s prospective administrative buildings. Located in Indore, India, Prestige University blends organic architecture with sustainable building practices to take full advantage of the environment’s natural resources and climate. Defined by staggered green terraces that gradually ascend towards a 20-meter high apex, Prestige University strikes a balance between interior function and outdoor comfort.

Inspired by traditional Indian architecture, Sanjay Puri Architects first looked to Indore’s natural climate and local resources to build energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure. Coming from the cavities formed by the top-level green terraces, fractured sunlight and plenty of ventilation pour in through the second-floor ceiling of Prestige University, where the bulk of classrooms are located.

With plenty of access to natural lighting and ventilation, Prestige University found heat mitigation through the site’s 20-meter tall brick screen that works to absorb most of the light and heat that pours down from the sun on the buildings east, west, and south sides. On the exterior level, Sanjay Puri Architects envisioned recreational activities taking place on the multi-tiered green terraces.

Designed to be a mixed-use building, Prestige University will house a library, cafeteria, and multiple seminar halls, amongst other facilities just beneath the rows of green terraces. On the structure’s ground level, students and faculty can find a cafeteria, auditorium, and various administrative offices. Then, in a similar fashion to colosseums’ underground tunnels, Prestige University’s first-floor library rooms are connected by an internal bridge that crosses over the diagonal indoor street.

A transforming and multifunctional television set featuring a retractable screen doubles up as a bookcase!

Giro is a multifunctional television with a retractable display screen that slinks away to transform the TV set into a simple bookshelf.

Living rooms are more like multipurpose rooms. We use our living rooms for everything from watching television to working out, and from eating dinner to doing homework. Taking a traditional living room setup, sometimes it’s not the space, but the single-purpose appliances within the space that limit all of the living room’s potential. South Korea-based designer Park Yoo Jung has developed Giro, a television that transforms its facade according to users’ changing needs.

To help facilitate all that our living rooms can provide, Giro morphs from a conventional smart television into a simple bookcase with the click of a button. Recognized by the Red Dot Design Awards in its Best of the Best category, Giro is the multifunctional living room appliance that creates customizable spaces as your needs change.

For the occasional living room workout between your lunch hour and the night shift, Giro maintains its initial form as a smart television so users can broadcast exercise classes to follow. Of course, Giro operates as an everyday television when needed, projecting movies and television shows chosen from a programmed catalog.

When users would like to transform their Giro television into a screenless bookcase, the rotating projector slinks behind the main platform to remain out of view for evenings spent reading in the armchair or beneath the bay windows. Once the projector screen is retracted, users will find a minimal, yet sturdy bookcase where they place artworks and books on display.

This multifunctional sewing machine uses color detection sensors to print new thread on-demand in any color!

The Sewing Chameleon is a multi-functional sewing machine that prints out thread on-demand in whatever color the user prefers, relying on color detection sensors and built-in ink cartridges.

These days, innovative design for home appliances boils down to convenience. Design that’s multifunctional or customizable has come through across all industries, providing everything from home furniture to stationery with a double function. Realizing the opportunity to turn the sewing machine into a multifunctional product, Minsong Cho designed the Sewing Chameleon, a sewing machine that prints out thread on-demand using built-in ink cartridges and color detection sensors.

The modern home is not about clutter. Everyday products are getting redesigned to fit in better with their environment, making their operation more user-friendly and keeping our living rooms organized. Cho’s Sewing Chameleon was conceived to cut out the hassle that comes with changing the thread in sewing machines when a different color is needed.

With traditional sewing machines, the process of swapping out the old thread for a new thread comes with its own heap of challenges–it takes a while to swap out the threads and even when you do, the new thread often gets stuck inside the machine and frays.

Solving this, Cho’s Sewing Chameleon comes with its own color detection sensors that allow users to create any color thread they’d like. All a user will need is a physical depiction of the color they’d like their thread to be and by placing that near the color detection sensors, the Sewing Chameleon will use its built-in ink cartridges to dye the new thread that color.

In addition to this multifunctional design, Sewing Chameleon comes in a neat, matte black with achromatic accents, giving it an overall look that pairs nicely with most color schemes. Users will also be able to control the Sewing Chameleon’s thread flow, needle speed, pattern, and lighting.

Designer: Minsong Cho

By turning the dial on the Sewing Chameleon, users can adjust the speed of the thread output.

In addition to its dual function s a printer, the Sewing Chameleon comes with a control panel that allows users to control everything from thread flow to lighting.

Coated in matte black, the Sewing Chameleon fits in nicely with any home color scheme.

Minsong Cho spotted the trouble spots of conventional sewing machines and looked to other home appliances like coffee makers and chargers to solve them through design.

This vacuum cleaner designed for small spaces breaks down into 4 parts to save storage space!

H5 is a multifunctional vacuum cleaner designed for small spaces that can break down into four parts that fit into a compact charging bin for easy storage.

While living tiny is all the rage nowadays, it takes some skill to keep small city spaces clean. Especially when you live in an old apartment building or with pets, vacuuming becomes a daily chore. While vacuuming small spaces goes by quickly, storing a bulky vacuum cleaner becomes a nuisance just as quickly. To keep small spaces clean without the pain of storing big cleaning appliances, industrial designer Yipeng Zhu ideated a space-saving multifunctional vacuum cleaner called H5 that shrinks down to almost a ⅓ of its height.

H5 keeps an overall slim build when assembled and when disassembled so it doesn’t take up too much space in storage. When disassembled, H5 breaks down into four parts and fits into one charging case that can easily slip away behind any table or into the closet to free up floor space.

When users would like to use the vacuum, putting H5 together comes just as easily as putting together any other vacuum. The main pipe connects via telescopic tubing where the vacuum head also easily attaches.  Equipped with modular parts, H5 comes with three different vacuum heads that can be switched out for various cleaning needs.

A cylindrical brush is ideal for cleaning up dustballs and stubborn carpet stains. While the other two rectangular heads come in two different sizes to fit into tight corners and behind doors. Even the hose and pipe of H5 take on a narrow, cylindrical build to ensure it can fit underneath the bed and even under the refrigerator to pick up the dust that’s harder to reach with traditional, bulky vacuums.

A solid collection of electrical cleaning appliances is essential for tiny living spaces–especially when you reside in a big city. However, the majority of most electrical appliances are designed for large homes, prioritizing the small technical details over versatility and portability.

H5 is a vacuum cleaner that can tuck away into the smallest of crawlspaces (or literally wherever there’s room) when not in use and whose small assembled size allows it to get to the hardest-to-reach corners of your apartment when cleaning.

Designer: Yipeng Zhu

Intuitive controls and signals outfit H5’s entire build.

H5 comes with three different brush heads to ensure the ideal tool for each cleaning job.

The compact charging case is small enough to tuck away into any corner or closet.

Shrinking down to what seems like a 1/3 of H5’s assembled height, the charging case is an ultimate space-saver.

This multifunctional product has been designed to work as a clothing rack and a treadmill!

We love multifunctional product designs here but I have to admit, I have never thought of a treadmill and a clothing rack in one! But then again, we use our office chairs as an “open closet” so this concept isn’t entirely alien. ‘Walk and Hang’ is a project that functions as a basic treadmill as well as a clothing rack in one sleek design.

Both clothing racks and treadmills are usually an eyesore in any home because they look out of place and are super bulky. One of the key aspects of ‘Walk and Hang’ is its aesthetically pleasing form that looks neither like a treadmill nor like a clothing rack. In fact, it looks like a minimal standing table if I ever saw one inside someone’s house and had to take a wild guess. It rests in a folding table-like form and can be opened fully into a treadmill or only partly at the top for the racks. It saves a lot of floor area indoors, especially if it’s a shared space and even more so after the pandemic where you need more room for a work-from-home setup.

“I tried to satisfy everything of the product’s original function and user’s habits, and solved space problems and considered usability by combining the two products together,” says designer Jinyoung Noh. Since this is a concept, I will let my imagination run wild – clothing racks are often placed where sunlight hits the hardest so clothes dry fast, I would love to see this treadmill be turned into a solar-powered one by capitalizing on that same sunlight. ‘Walk and Hang’ is a slim treadmill and definitely the most beautiful clothing rack I’ve ever seen!

This versatile lounge chair opens up every room with its foldable build and Scandinavian design

Living in small spaces calls for either multifunctional or foldable furniture. When you have the choice to fold up and stow away a lounge chair or use hidden compartments in a bed frame for storage, the space in your bedroom or living area completely opens up. Following the debut of their modular FK Bookcase System, furniture maker Carl Hansen & Søn introduces the Plico Chair, a handcrafted wooden lounge chair that folds into itself for easy storage.

The Plico Chair got its name from the Latin translation, “To fold.” Built using Scandinavian design flairs and minimal ornamentation, the Plico Chair’s frame is crafted from solid oak wood for a natural look and sturdy base. The rear legs of the Plico Chair fall back, allowing a natural recline for the cushion to rest. Upholstered in linen canvas, the cushion also evokes a subtle comfort with organic tones and lasting protection from inevitable wear and tear. A natural leather hide strap extends from the rear legs to the front of a chair to create an armrest propped up with a center wooden peg. Designed to be disassembled for easy storage, the Plico Chair features exposed brass fitting and visible joints, enhancing its already elemental aesthetic.

With such an elegant look and versatile design, Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn describes the chair’s appeal, “The Plico Chair is an extremely versatile piece of furniture – not only in its function of being a foldable lounge chair, but also in its appearance, and it fits elegantly into the living room, the cottage, and the hotel room and lobby. It is a comfortable and cozy chair to sit in with a good book and a cup of coffee.”

Designer: Carl Hansen & Søn

The Plico Chair comes in two forms, one includes a headrest, while the other does not.

Easily disassembled, the Plico Chair fold into itself for easy storage and portability.

The Plico Chair was designed to add an elegant, yet inviting flair to every room.

Leather strap and exposed brass fittings give the Plico Chair an elemental look.

Canvas linen covering gives the Plico Chair a comfortable and durable feel.

This multifunctional coffee table transforms into a sitting bench and more furniture to save you space!

Saving space in tiny homes should be considered a sport. Finding the right furniture and storage organizers can take a while, but the wait is always worth it once the right pieces come along. One way to save space is by choosing multifunctional furniture like the & Chair from Taiwan-based designer Shin Chen, a piece of furniture that blends storage into a coffee table that doubles as a high stool and bench.

Inspired by the shape of the ampersand, & Chair flows into a natural shape, handmade from a collection of sustainable materials like felt and ash wood. & Chair can be positioned in different placements to change its use‒from upright to horizontal, the & Chair changes function as it changes position. When placed upright, the & Chair morphs into a standing coat rack with ample drawer storage, where smaller items like magazines and umbrellas can be stored. Then, users can bring the & Chair down, allowing it to work as a coffee table with storage space made available through a slot-and-rack system, where magazines and coffee table books can be kept. The & Chair can also always work as a bench when placed horizontally, making for an inviting entryway sitting bench where you can tie your shoes or a more discreet seating area for overflow in the living room.

Modeled after the ampersand, the & Chair’s name is symbolic for its multifunctionality, bringing out its chameleonic personality. Designed from warm, natural wood, the & Chair enhances each living space with a hint of abstract Scandinavian design marked by its wooden structure and unique shape that changes with each of its different uses.
