Nissan’s hot ramen serving counter demonstrates no-lurch braking tech in Japanese style

Nissan e-4ORCE Ramen Counter demonstrates the advanced technology set to make the Ariya crossover smooth and comfortable while braking in city traffic.

While driving at good speeds down the city road you need to stop for the red light, the cranky feeling of motion inside the car when the brakes are hit is not very pleasant. The passengers tilt abruptly forward and then backward as the vehicle comes to a standstill. Nissan wants to get over this irk of driving with their e-4ORCE twin motor all-wheel control technology to smoothly manage the braking performance. The tech is all set to debut in the 2023 Ariya electric crossover later this year, but for now, the Japanese automotive giant wants to show off this technology in its unique style.

Designer: Nissan

To demonstrate the level of comfort passengers and the driver will experience while braking, they’ve created an all-electric ramen robot server tray on wheels. Yes, the lip-smacking Japanese noodles served in a bowl are loaded on the miniature drivetrain with the tray on top, replicating the Ariya’s chassis. In the entertaining video released by Nissan, the motorized custom-built server tray delivers the hot bowl of ramen noodles to eager Japanese foodies sitting at the counter. Watch as the chef pours the delicacy into the bowl and places it on top of the tray which then smoothly rides on the countertop.

The absolute smoothness and stability of the technology ensure not even a single drop of the tasty staple is spilled. That’s exactly how the Ariya is going to come to a standstill under braking. According to Ryozo Hiraku, expert leader of Nissan’s powertrain and EV engineering division, the regenerative braking is managed on each of the axles to drastically reduce the pinch and dive. He added; “by taking advantage of e-4ORCE’s precise motor control response, we’re able to control vehicle motion as soon as the brakes are applied, giving all occupants – especially passengers – a stable, smooth ride.”

Nissan Ariya is currently up for reservation in the US at a starting price tag of $45,950 for the single motor trim. The AWD system-equipped version dubbed Platinum+ e-4ORCE will sell for $58,950.

Udon Noodle Inspired Blanket Looks Like a Tentacled Nightmare

Drawing inspiration from the thick udon noodles used in Japanese cuisine, the Udon for Sleeping Noodles Blanket is a “tentacles grid bedding cover,” which are four words I never thought I’d type together, yet here we are. The blanket (if you can even call it that) consists of eight large tentacles, secured at both the top and bottom by a cross strip, and all covered with a fine mesh top. Honestly, I don’t know how I’ve been sleeping under anything else my entire life.

The blanket measures approximately 43″ x 79″ and is perfect for the merperson who’s found themselves marooned on dry land, missing the comforting embrace of an octopus at night. Did I mention it costs $345 from the Japan Trend Shop? Now I’m not saying now would be a good time to learn how to sew and start your own Etsy shop selling similar blankets for $180, but I demand 20% of profits for giving you the idea.

Take a Noodle Bath and Swim with Some Ramen

Don’t you just love ramen noodles? Well, now you can enjoy some instant ramen every time you take a bath. I’m not talking about nuking a package of Nissin or Maruchan and taking them into the tub with you (though you could do that.) I’m talking about these unique bathtub noodles.

Not to be confused with pool noodles, Paper Plane’s Bath Noodles are here to help you feel relaxed and rejuvenated after floating in your bathtub. They’re made using natural oils and exfoliants to help your skin feel delightful after a noodle soak. They come in three “flavors:”  Tangy Thai: lemongrass and hemp, Singapore Spice: tea tree and turmeric, and Vietnamese Fresh: peppermint and poppy. Just drop them in your warm bath, and you’ll be part of a delicious noodle dish. No seasoning packet required.

Sadly, Bath Noodles aren’t available via GrubHub or your local convenience store, so you’ll have to wait a few days to get an order. If you want, you can place your order from Firebox for $13.99 a box – which is enough money to buy roughly 48 packs of Maruchan instant noodles from Target.

Someone Built a Guitar from Ramen Noodles

While I prefer my ramen noodles to be made fresh these days, there were many times back in college when instant ramen was as staple food, due to its incredible ease of cooking and budget pricing. But one thing I never imagined doing with my ramen noodles was turning them into a guitar.

But that’s exactly what Artem Mayer of Copper Guitars did. He used 36 packs of ramen noodles, and covered them in 5 liters of polyester resin, then cut and sanded the structure into a guitar body. He later would add a maple wood neck, and all the necessary hardware to turn it into a working musical instrument. The intro to Artem’s build video is in Russian, but the rest of it is completely self-explanatory:

I love how he made the effort to sprinkle in the ramen seasoning evenly to make it really look like the finished guitar body has that delicious, brothy look.

Postmodern dining with the Japanese art of useless gadgets

The Japanese word "chindogu" covers a delightful range of terrible gadgets. It's about vaguely genius concepts, ruined either in their execution or ambition. If you've seen the baby-floor-mop onesie or the upside-down umbrella for capturing rainwater...

‘Ramen’ses Return Cake: Oodles of Noodles

Threadless is currently holding a contest called Threadcakes – in which bakers submit cake designs inspired by Threadless t-shirts. There are a bunch of awesome and amusing submissions, but my favorite so far has to be this cake.

The cake was inspired by Jerry Maninang’s ‘Ramen’ses Return t-shirt design. The cake not only captures the essence of the amusing t-shirt’s design, but takes it to a whole ‘nother level, IMHO. Also cake is better for you than noodles. Or so I’ve been told.

This intricate vanilla buttermilk cake was made by Jessica Allard, who deserves all the accolades in the world for her amazing noodle cake. Check out all of the work she had to go through in order to create this incredible edible sculpture.

Be sure to check out all of the other delicious submissions in the Threadcakes gallery. I give my second place prize to Death is Random. Though Tea at 2,000 Feet is pretty spectacular too.

Chicken Flavored Ramen Noodle Cake, Just Add Hot Water (or Not)

Instant ramen soup. It’s an amazing geek food, even if those flavor packets will kill you with MSG and sodium. Gamers especially love the stuff, because of it’s easy to make nature. You can make it and barely be distracted from your game. Well, what if I told you that you could have a Ramen noodle cake?

ramen cake 1 620x465magnify

This awesome Ramen noodle cake is nowhere nearly as easy to make, but I bet it is even more delicious than Ramen noodles. It’s chicken flavored of course, because we all know that is the best flavor. And the flavor packet is a nice touch too. As an added bonus, there’s no MSG here. I think.

No water required for this Ramen package. That would be disgusting.

Soup Straw Chopsticks Do Double Duty for Slurping

Noodles don’t taste just as good without the soup. That’s the thing I don’t like about chopsticks. They’re fine for picking up meat and veggies and for cramming noodles into your mouth, but unless you’ve got a soup spoon, then you’re left slurping the soup up from the bowl.

Changing all that are Soup Straws by Julian Lechner.

Chopstick Straws

They’re essentially chopsticks that double as straws, so you can slurp some soup in between mouthfuls of noodles without needing any other utensils. This is made possible by the fact that the chopsticks are hollow and have a couple of holes near the tip, allowing them to function as straws.

Unfortunately, they’re only a concept for now. They certainly don’t seem like they’d be difficult to produce, so maybe one day they’ll actually turn these into a reality.
