An Eye-Opening Retinal Scanner

zeiss_01

The VISUSCOUT 100 delivers practical, high quality imaging for detection and monitoring of retinal disorders. Examinations are quickly performed and reviewed without needing to move the patient. Even medical staff can operate the device, enabling cost-effective image capture prior to a full examination. With advanced hardware and software, the design allows the professional to detect a myriad of retinal issues by precisely controlling the lenses movement to focus on even extremely small areas. Packed into a small, rugged carrying case, the VISUSCOUT can be conveniently transported and easily fits into any practice setup. Thanks to the camera’s non-mydriatic operation and precise autofocus function, dilation of the eyes is not required. Its battery power provides added flexibility. The optional WiFi functionality enables instant transfer of images to a PC or mobile device.

Intel teases MXC: a 1.6Tbps optical interconnect for servers

Intel teases MXC a 16Tbps, optical interconnect for servers

While we think of optical connections as cutting edge, they're positively decrepit in server rooms; current fiber interconnect technology got its start in the 1980s. Intel may soon drag servers into the modern era with its just-teased MXC format, however. The standard (not pictured here) will combine both silicon photonics and a new form of Corning fiber to link servers at 1.6Tbps -- more than quick enough to eliminate many data bottlenecks. The connectors themselves are smaller, too. Intel won't say more about MXC until the Intel Developer Forum next month in San Francisco, but we already suspect that supercomputer operators will be happy with all that extra bandwidth.

Sony and Panasonic ally to launch next-generation 300GB optical discs

Sony and Panasonic hoping to launch 300GB optical disks by 2015

During the heyday of optical storage we saw a 400GB Blu-Ray flavor (shown above) and even 1TB discs in the lab, but lately such development has waned. Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to move things along, however, saying there's a need for reliable long-term storage that only optical disks can provide. The pair will develop a "next-generation standard for professional-use optical discs," saying that a 300GB flavor could be ready in two years or so. Though geared towards industries like cloud storage and digital cinema at first, the tech could eventually trickle down to consumers, too. Given rapid developments in on-demand streaming and cloud gaming, however, there might be nothing left for us plebes to archive by then.

Optical Heartbeat For Better Diagnosis

The Optical Stethoscope is a nifty piece of technology that acts as assistive device for doctors. Through graphic representation on its knob, it shows doctors the heartbeat, or stomach fluid sounds in waveforms. Basic info like heart rate and pulse is displayed for faster comprehension. The basic idea behind the concept is to aid doctors in making faster and accurate diagnosis.

Medical students who are not yet familiar with the sound of internal organs, will find it easy to use this device, especially in an emergency situation.

Definite Exit

The Triangle Optical Gate Design makes it ample clear which side of the gate can be used to pass through and which cannot. The design employs the use of an intuitive triangle edge on the top and the bottom end of the gates and LEDs help to make them more evident. The gates are the kinds you see at subway stations and can intuitively integrate features like barcode scanners, RFID readers etc.
