This Orchestra Is Playing While Nomming on Uber-Hot Chilies
Playing classical music at a professional level is very demanding. Of course, humans can multi-task at anything if they’re experienced enough, so Chili Klaus devised a devious tasting. He’s usually known for tasting chilies and giving notes on them himself, but this time he’s conducting the Danish National Chamber Orchestra while they eat “the worlds [sic] hottest chili peppers.” The Carolina Reaper is the hottest chili at 2.2 Million Scoville units, which is more than four times hotter than the hottest habañero variant, and about 440 times hotter than a middle of the road jalapeño.
Despite their predicament, the orchestra managed to play very, very admirably. Most people who take up an instrument never sound that good when they are 100% focused, whereas these Danes were clearly in a lot of pain.
Sadly, the Danish National Chamber Orchestra is going to be abolished at the end of the year for reasons that I can’t ascertain with certainty, on account of my not speaking Danish. From what I gathered, it’s a case of money mismanagement, and a great many people are very upset about this. I wish these musicians all the best.

Lincoln Center LOTR Screenings to Have a Live Orchestra!
I have always been a fan of films that have an orchestral soundtrack behind the action on screen. Some films have normal music, and that’s cool, but an orchestra is my favorite. One of the cool things about The Lord of the Rings to me was the soundtrack. If you feel the same way, and live near New York’s Lincoln Center, you have to go see this.
The Lincoln Center is holding a viewing of The Lord of the Rings trilogy with the movies being accompanied by a full orchestra live in the theater. The 21st Century Symphony Orchestra & Chorus will perform the music for the films right there.
Over five days the entire trilogy will be screened twice. Tickets for the event range from $69 to $150 per film, or $240 to $400 for all three films. That isn’t exactly cheap, but this isn’t exactly a normal movie showing. The event doesn’t kick off until next April, so get those travel plans ready, and buy your tickets now.

Disarm is an Orchestra of Instruments Made from Weapons
This is not your typical orchestra. The instruments look especially unusual, and that’s because each of them is made using decommissioned weapons.
They were put together by artist Pedro Reyes in an effort to convert weapons into actual, playable instruments. You might remember Pedro from his previous work, where he built a fully-mechanized orchestra.
Disarm is comprised of eight instruments and was made possible through a collaboration with Cocolab, a media studio in Mexico City, and various musicians.
Their first step was to gather pistols, rifles, and shotguns that were previously used by drug cartels. They were then taken apart and put together once more to create musical instruments that are controlled with the use of computers. The instruments can even be pre-programmed to play music.
Several of the Disarm instruments will be on display at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh on October 5, 2013.

Mailbox for iPhone arrives to keep us on top of Gmail, aims for true inbox zero (video)
Anyone who gets a regular deluge of email knows how tough it is to clear the inbox rather than just hope all those messages will go away. Orchestra thinks its new Mailbox app for the iPhone has a simple solution to the glut: treat email like task management. Along with reducing mail deletion to a single swipe, it lets readers postpone action until the evening, the following day or whenever it's easier to handle. It may come in handy for a few power users as well when it supports multiple accounts and can send push notifications. There are a number of caveats beyond just the iOS-only nature, however -- it supports just Gmail for now, and it doesn't have ways to assign custom labels or select multiple messages at once, like Google's app. When Mailbox is free, however, it's worth a try if your inbox has ever looked more like a monument to neglect than a clean slate.
