This pelican-beak restaurant overlooks a cliff with an absolutely stunning view

It’s probably because I haven’t traveled around a lot in the past year and a half, but Thilina Liyanage‘s renders are looking increasingly realistic and awe-striking… and I can’t blame myself for feeling that rather lost feeling of wanderlust. Sri Lanka-based Liyanage’s been responsible for creating some of the most awe-striking architectural designs that relate beautifully to their surroundings – like a jagged cabin sitting upon a rocky beach, or a goldfish-shaped bar overlooking an ocean. This time, Liyanage’s design gives you a birds-eye view of a valley, while being shaped like a bird’s beak!

The Sky Restaurants, as they’re called, cantilever off the precipice of a mountain, giving you a certain thrill as you dine. Its design takes cues from a pitcher-plant, using a boat-like base that projects from the slope, with a slightly raised roof to protect you from the elements while also giving you a stunning view of the mountainous terrain in front of and below you. Like a lot of Liyanage’s designs, the Sky Restaurant uses curved bamboo pieces, giving it a distinctly tropical feeling that does set up a contrast against the mountains… but then again, look at it from above and it almost looks like fairy-lights strung around the mountain!

Peleg Design’s pelican is the only bird allowed in your kitchen!

I love to cook, but I hate to do the dishes after. The soaking dishes, the wet cloth, the soapy sponge – it is all so damp! Designer Gil Cohen has created Pelix for Peleg Design, a cute kitchen companion that will reduce your internal shrieks and actually lift your mood while doing dishes. This little pelican shaped cloth and sponge holder will be perched on your counter and the only thing that will fly is the time taken to do chores.

Pelix’s bright break is actually a cloth holder, so hang up that dishcloth while the body of the pelican is a cup for your sponge. Pelix makes it easy to keep dish cleaning essentials right where they are needed with its suction cup bottom, but unlike Ross Geller, it can pivot and make your life easier! Usually, we always look for a blind spot in our kitchen that guests cannot see to keep dishcloths and sponges because having them dry right there can ruin the interior aesthetics of your space, however, this handy pelican will fetch many compliments for its form while being super functional.

That is why it is called a pelican, not a pelicant – get it!?

Review: Pelican Protector Case for iPhone 6

protector images from sell sheet.indd
We were sent a Pelican Protector Case for our iPhone 6 for review. The case is available in 6 different color choices, we went with a black one (with blue trim). Out of the box the case is a one-piece case that slips right over the phone very easily. It’s a rubbery material with enough give to let your phone in but also rigid enough to hold it firmly in place. Inside it’s soft so it won’t scratch the back of your phone.

As you can see from our photo, the front side of the case does have a small “lip” that extends upwards around the screen. This is definitely a plus as it protects the phone if you place it face down by keeping the glass screen off the table (and could potentially help in case of face down drops).

The back of the case has an attractive two-tone color scheme with a pair of horizontal raised stripes. The Pelican branding is the same color as the case so while you can tell who made the case, you’re not a walking advertisement. As you can see there are cutouts for the camera lens and flash. We found them large enough that they did not interfere with camera usage in any way.
pelican protector side
From the side view you can see the recessed area for the volume on/off switch. Larger fingers might find it a little tough at times to slip in there to press it (although it’s typically not an often used switch anyway). The case overlays both the volume control switches below that and the power button on the opposite side. Pressing the case to hit these buttons is not really as smooth as we would like but on the other hand it can also prevent you from accidentally hitting it and turning your phone off by mistake. Another cutout so you could press the buttons directly would probably be ideal.
pelican protector bottom
Here’s the bottom of the case. As you can see the case allows access to the port as well as clearings for the microphone, headphone jack, and speaker. The depth of the case made it a little tricky to plug in the lightning cable, we have to kind of guide it in there somewhat carefully.

Overall the case has a really clean look to it and nice feel in the hands. The material is a non-slip grippy type and the slightly rounded edges make it easy to hold. The case is certainly not the slimmest you can buy and it does add a small bit of size to the phone but that’s a tradeoff for padding that will protect your phone in the (likely) event of a drop. It weighs 1.4 ounces which adds minimal weight to the phone. It does not include a screen protector, so that’s something you will need to buy separately if you desire.

Bottom line: very solid case, looks great, will protect your phone.

Note: the case is exclusive to AT&T, you can buy it for $40 on their site here.

Nokia to invest in ‘array’ mobile cameras that use small lenses to capture big images

Nokia plans to invest in a mobile 'array' camera startup called Pelican

If the name Pelican Imaging rings a bell, it's possibly because we covered the company's array imaging camera prototype back in 2011. The technology uses multiple lenses that are relatively tiny in terms of how much space they take up in a mobile device, but which work together to capture an image of the same quality as a much larger camera -- just as array telescopes replace the need for one huge telescope. Now, it appears we weren't the only ones taking an interest, because Nokia's investment wing has revealed to Bloomberg that it's been watching the startup since 2008 and is currently planning to invest in it. Bo Ilsoe, of Nokia Growth Partners, describes Pelican's technology as "on the cusp of being commercialized" -- so who knows? One day, a future Lumia might house 41 megapixels, image stabilization and the voodoo known as plenoptics. In the meantime, there's a video after the break which sort of explains how the technology sucks in enough data to allow for focus to be adjusted after a picture is taken -- a trick which also sounds rather familiar.
