Charge your smartphone while you sleep and recharge

If you have trouble sleeping, one of the best things that you can do to help yourself is to place your smartphone or any smart device as far away from you as possible. Of course this is easier said than done but believe me, it makes a difference. But if you would like to really rest and recharge, you know you have to also let your phone rest and recharge, preferably away from you. There are a lot of products out there that would like to help both you and your device power up.

Designer: Wootae Kim

Share Power is a concept for a phone charger that can also be your night light until you fall asleep (well, if you fall asleep easily). At first it looks like a small paper shredder or a UV light sterilizer or a small storage device. But it’s actually a device to charge your smartphone while you’re sleeping. It’s meant to be placed at your bedroom door or anywhere away from you and will also serve as a night light so you can sleep well while your phone recharges.

There is a slot in the middle of the device where you can place your smartphone for charging. Since most mobile phones now are thin enough, it should fit a typical iPhone or Android device, at least in concept. Once you place your phone there, Share Power will also light up for 15 minutes while it’s charging. If you don’t fall asleep by then, you’ll have to make do with the dark. Hopefully, there’s a way to program how long the light will stay on for those of us who might need a little more illumination more than 15 minutes.

They don’t really explain what functions the other parts of the device will bring. There’s a speaker-like grill in the bottom part so we don’t know if there’s also another purpose for the device aside from charging and lighting. But if that’s just what you’re looking for, it should be enough.

Millenium Falcon Wireless Charger: Charge Your Phone In Parsecs

Modeled after Han Solo’s infamous flying bucket of bolts, the Geeknet Star Wars Millennium Falcon Wireless Charger (on sale for $26 at GameStop) is a wireless fast charger capable of juicing up any device with wireless charging capabilities (including Samsung and Apple phones). But can it do it in less than 12 parsecs? It better, or I’m demanding my money back.

The charger has a nice 3D look to it and measures approximately 11″ x 6.5″ x 1.5″, so it isn’t just a boring flat pad. Plus, the Falcon’s thrusters glow blue when your device is fully charged. Obviously, I’m only going to put already-charged devices on it, so it always glows blue because I’m much more into form than actual function.

I have a wireless charger on my bedside table so my phone charges while I sleep, but I always miss getting it on the pad before bed, so I wake up to a phone that’s guaranteed to die sometime during the day. Probably at the worst time possible. If there’s a logical solution to this problem, I sure don’t see it.

3-in-1 charger concept powers up and sanitizes your phone

Sometimes I wish I never knew how many germs my smartphone carries as it is a device I carry with me almost all the time. But here we are with the knowledge that there are more bacteria on our devices than those left in an average toilet. So it’s pretty crucial that we clean our phones regularly, even more than we clean our bathrooms.

The Pulito is a concept device that brands itself as a 3-in-1 charger that only powers up your smartphone, it also charges your supplementary battery and cleans both at the same time. And if you’ve finished disinfecting the devices, the charger can also turn into a mood light. This should be a pretty useful tool, especially for those that are still working from home and can be a valuable part of their work area.

Designer: Cheon Ryong Choi

The design inspiration for the charger is both literal and figurative. The designer says that the motif is from the Pantheon temple in Rome and the Parthenon in Greece. Aside from the structure of the device itself, the idea for the Pulito is to “purify” smartphones which are pretty important to almost all of us, just like the temples were protecting the gods and purifying the people that go into there to worship.

It looks like pretty much any upright charger if you’re using it for its primary purpose of charging the smartphone and a secondary battery. Then when you want to disinfect them, you put in a cover which does all the purifying work. There are some functional buttons on the stand: one to turn it on or off, a button to turn on the mood light which can be adjusted to 1, 2, or 3, a button to start the disinfecting action, and a sleep button that will disinfect it after 30 minutes.

The Pulito concept renders seem to be in pastel colors with the pink one being highlighted. It blends in with any your decorations whether at your desk, living room, even your bathroom, if that’s your theme or motif at home. I wouldn’t mind having one handy at home if only to remind me that I need to regularly clean my smartphone with all the bacteria floating around there. Sure there are UV light cleaners out there but which one can charge your phone as well?

Reduce screen time with this wireless charging dock that shows notifications without disturbing your work mode!

Excessive screen times are wreaking havoc with our lives, and we don’t even realize that. Migo is here to set things right and perceive life as it’s meant to be – being fully present in the current moment!

Gadgets have become an inseparable entity, virtually ruling our lives in most instances. Now that wasn’t the intended purpose for these smart possessions when they were initially invented. However, now that we’ve realized the amount of time spent in front of the screen is affecting other facets of our lives, the attention should be on how to fix it. Apps like Forest already encourage users to focus on the task at hand, but then, the ultimate control lies with the user to go back to unproductive surfing. This juxtaposes with the intent of using such apps and mars the whole purpose.

Designer Ashwin Suresh wants to fix this with a solution dubbed Migo that takes the smartphone’s screen away from the user’s periphery with a bit of clever invention. The idea here is to dock the phone in a wireless charging accessory that completely encapsulates the screen view. Now, if you thought this would deny the user from accessing any important calls or notifications, then the designer has created the accessory to address that problem. The gadget has its own screen which filters important notifications and shows them up on the display. When the screen is idle it shows the screen usage by the user on all the connected devices.

This subconsciously motivates the user to reduce screen time whenever possible and ultimately adopt a healthier lifestyle. Migo is designed in a way to encourage the user to put the phone away when doing important tasks. The wireless charger has an inclined design so that the weight of the device gently tilts back the dock. Ashwin describes this as a subtle gesture of putting away the phone. For me, the gadget’s simple visual communication helps the end-user have a better understanding of screen usage. That’s important because only when you have a subconscious realization, you take actions to gradually overcome the habit!

This NFC enabled sleep aid device keeps you away from late-night scrolling and improves sleep!

Sleep is personal. Each night, we curate the best conditions for optimal sleep. You might have a preferred meditation app, a favorite essential oil for your trusted aromatherapy diffuser, or the only sleep apnea breathing mask that won’t make you feel like you’re going into combat come morning. Whatever your ideal sleeping conditions call for, we all know how important it is to set the tone for a good night’s rest. Mark Stanisic recently debuted his design, Oblak in order to provide a sleeping bedside device that helps manage nightly routines and promote effective rest.

Oblak is essentially a smart speaker that walks users through their nightly sleep routines. Through the use of smart technology, Oblak introduces each individual user’s optimal bedtime environment ideal for effective rest. Many factors can contribute to sleep deprivation, but in today’s world, the overconsumption of media on our smartphones is perhaps the leading cause. In order to step away from smart technology doing the work for us, Stanisic takes a holistic approach instead, encouraging users through Oblak to make conscious decisions that benefit their sleep patterns. For instance, Oblak uses NFC technology to register when its user is ready for bed.

In order for Oblak to operate, the user simply places their smartphone on the induction charging zone, then through connectivity pairing, an accompanying app will ask if they’re ready for bed. Once ‘Yes’ is selected, NFC technology communicates with the bedroom’s additional smart technology such as lightbulbs and thermostats to transform the bedroom into the ideal environment for good sleep. Stanisic found that optimal sleeping conditions require a room’s average temperature to be set between 18-28℃, that the lighting should emanate warm, red wavelengths, and that ambient sound should provide a low-decibel and stable range of sound to cut through distracting outside noises.

All of these conditions work to provide the ideal environment for effective sleep and once a user tells Oblak that they’re ready for bed, the sleeping bedside device maintains the conditions throughout the night so users can sleep soundly. Lights fade from cool blue to warmer red hues, the thermostat adjusts to find the most suitable temperature, and ambient soundwaves permeate the user’s room, creating a sort of sound bath to get some rest.

Designer: Mark Stanisic

Once Oblak’s user is ready for bed, smart technology adjusts the bedroom’s lighting to provide the ideal environment for a good night’s sleep.

Today’s younger generation spends a lot of time looking at their laptop’s or smartphone’s digital screen, which negatively affects our relationship with sleep.

Oblak’s simple interface and textured surface invite users to power on the sleep aid device and securely place their belongings when ready for bed.

Oblak’s friendly appearance prioritizes the user’s peace of mind by utilizing inviting fabric and layers of translucent surfaces that echo the fogginess that follows a good night’s rest.

Toast the bacteria off of your smartphones!

We all collectively want to roast this pandemic out of existence, it has truly turned us all into Monica Geller with the constant disinfecting and cleaning things. Our phones are actually dirtier than toilet seats and we obviously use it all the time, so considering the rise of the bacteria we should make sure to also sanitize our phones along with our groceries (what a time to be alive). Combining two of Monica Geller’s favorite things, cooking + cleaning, this neat toaster actually is a smart appliance that disinfects your phone.

This conceptual toaster was designed to make disinfecting your phones a little easier and, honestly, more fun! Instead of the usual wipe down, this turns the task into a small interaction with the product that leaves you with a nice feeling instead of “I have to wipe my phone 25 times a day because there is a pandemic”. It aims to make the interaction between products and people more playful. The toaster also charges your phone while disinfecting it which is a nice way to reduce your screen time, I mean your phone is being “toasted” so you can’t take it out till it’s done! While the concept is still being developed, I assume it uses UV light to disinfect and sanitize the phone while wirelessly charging it.

The physical form is that of a minimal, modern toaster – something we recognize and value. While we are on that topic, we could also have a panini press or grill that does the same job for tablets and laptops! It reminds me of how the fresh plates at a restaurant are always warm and that leaves you with a sense of them being clean. That is the very emotion I gather when I imagine using this smartphone toaster to disinfect and charge my phone. Food and technology are evidently my two favorite things and if they are disinfecting, then its a win-win in this crazy world!
