Startup Kateeva Aimes at Killing LCD TV Displays

There are few problems harder in technology than bringing a new type of display to market. Since the invention of television and the CRT in the early 1900s, it’s been successfully pulled off twice....

Eyes-on with Panasonic’s new HDTV lineup ahead of CES press conference

Eyeson with Panasonic's new HDTV lineup ahead of CES press conference

Our liveblog of Panasonic's press conference is mere minutes away, but we've already glimpsed some new HDTV models displayed on stage. There looks to be an update to the top-of-the-line WT series of LED sets -- we'd estimate the size as 55 inches. Next to it is a yet-to-be-announced plasma model, almost certainly from the high-end VT series. We're eyeballing it at 65 inches, but we'll know soon whether our estimates are correct -- and hopefully, get the lowdown on specs and availability. Stay tuned!

Update: We had a chance to get up close and personal with the new TVs after the press conference -- you'll find three models in the gallery just below.

Panasonic’s 2013 Q1: things are looking up with a $164 million profit

Panasonic's

Panasonic's financial year runs from summer to summer, so its first-quarter results for 2013 just hit the wire. The figures proudly show that the company has managed to turn around the losses it suffered so badly in the previous period -- with $23 billion in turnover generating a tidy profit of $164 million. While sales dropped by six percent compared to the first three months of the year, it's been reducing fixed costs and restructuring each segment of the business to ensure a return to profit making despite the worsening financial crisis in Europe. The company's even been able to stick some cash into the savings account, tucking $16.6 million into the piggy bank for a rainy day.

NHK & Panasonic Unveil 145″ Ultra High Definition 8K Display: I Sense Another Star Wars Boxset in the Near Future

So you have a kick ass home theater setup, with a 72″ 3D HDTV as its centerpiece. I applaud your fat wallet. But if you want to keep being a great consumer, keep an eye on this new technology: a 145-inch Ultra High Definition plasma display. Either that or this is a picture of a 32″ HDTV and a very small lady.

Made by NHK and Panasonic, the display has a maximum resolution of 7,860 x 4,320, has almost 34 million pixels and other numbers bigger than the ones that your TV has. It also has “a new drive system to stabilize the picture throughout the panel, by scanning several pixels simultaneously in the vertical direction.”

I predict that in a hundred years, Sony will partner with ImprovEverywhere to bring us Liv3Theatr, an Ultra Hyper Mega 26-Hit Combo Finish High Definition Display that looks so real because it is real. Pick a channel and Sony will teleport improv actors behind your display to perform whatever show is on that channel or teleport you to where the show is being held. If you can find the remote.
