Sony Discontinues the PlayStation Vita

Sony’s handheld, the PlayStation Vita had a good long run. It was no Nintendo 3DS, but it did have many loyal users. But like other handhelds that have come and gone, the time has come to put this one to rest. The PlayStation Vita is now no more, as Sony has discontinued the last two PS Vita models.

It was a long time coming and Sony has been phasing it out for a while. Way back in 2015, they put a halt on first-party games, then later they discontinued physical games. So it was a slow burn into oblivion.

The Vita launched in Japan in December of 2011, but at that time phone and tablet gaming were just becoming popular. The system had its issues, like expensive, proprietary memory cards and it had to compete with Nintendo’s handheld as well, and just could never really overcome these obstacles.

Sony has yet to announce plans for a new handheld, but so for now, the PS4 will have to handle all of your Sony gaming needs. It’s a sad day for those who have devoted time and money to this handheld, but 8 years is a pretty good run for any gaming system.

PlayStation TV Launching October 14 For North America

PlayStation TV box image

Sony’s set-top box that provides instant access to a variety of PlayStation content is headed to North America next month.

October 14 is the North American release of the PlayStation TV. For $99 USD, the Sony gadget is a set-top box where you can play games from the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Classics, the PlayStation 3 (through PS Now), and the PlayStation 4 via Remote Play.

Sony promises “nearly 700 games” will be available to download and play in the United States and Canada when the device launches. Although, some PS Vita titles won’t be able to make the “PS TV compatible” jump due to their use of hardware-specific gameplay, say using the Vita’s back-touch in Tearaway for example.

The list is still ample though, and will feature popular PS Vita titles: God of War Collection, Persona 4 Golden, Killzone Mercenary, and many more. And if you’re looking for a cheap way to dig through the PlayStation’s back catalogue, which consists of both PlayStation One and PlayStation Portable outings, the PS TV should do just nicely.

With PlayStation Now, Sony’s video game streaming service, the PlayStation TV will also be able to play select PlayStation 3 titles, provided, of course, if you have a sturdy and speedy broadband internet connection.

Lastly, if you own a PlayStation 4 (over 10 million worldwide sold say, yes, you probably do), then the PlayStation TV will allow for Remote Play. But instead of staring at a small screen, as with Remote Play on Vita, users can stream and play PS4 games from their main display to another, and control them with a synced DualShock4.

The PlayStation TV, aside from it’s $99 standalone version, will also come available in a system bundle that includes the box itself, a DualShock3 controller, an 8GB memory card, and The LEGO Movie Videogame. Another bundle, exclusive to Walmart retailers, reportedly has Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time instead; both available for $139.99 USD.

Goodbye PSP

Playstation PortableWelp, It was bound to happen sooner or later. It’s been around for 10 years and sold 76 million units, but Sony is saying goodbye to the PSP.

Sony announced today that they were stopping shipments of the PSP by the end of 2014. The last shipment was sent out to North America at the end of January, so once they are gone….they are gone. Japan’s last shipment will be sent at the end of this month and Europe’s will end in the next few months.

The PSP was released back in 2004, and was one of the first handheld devices that could play games, movies and music. 2004 doesn’t seem that long ago until you think that the first iPhone was released 3 years later. Sony set the standard for handheld devices that’s for sure.

If you still want to get a Sony handheld device you can always look into the Playstation Vita, which isn’t selling by leaps and bounds either. But you can still get the PSP. They are still available, so get one while you can and show your kids someday. I wonder if kids in the future will laugh at it like the kids of today laugh at the Atari console?

Sony Launches PS Vita slim for North America

Sony PS Vita Bundle US ReleaseSony launched an updated, slimmer version of the Playstation Vita on Tuesday to North America including the US, as part of a bundle with a copy of Borderlands 2. The Vita Slim had already been released in Japan last year, Europe earlier this year and Europe and has now finally made its way west.

The updated version is 20 percent slimmer and 15 percent lighter than its predecessor and brings an extended battery life with it, as well. The hardware package comes with the Sony PS Vita handheld gaming device, a removable 8GB memory card and a copy of Borderlands 2 from Gearbox Software along with 6 DLC packs (Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty, Collector’s Edition Pack, Mechromancer Character Class, Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage, Psycho Character Class, and the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 1).

Comparing this version side-by-side with the previous model you might notice the display was downgraded from an OLED to LCD, but for us that’s a small item compared to the overall upgrade. The Playstation Vita is available now, only as the bundle, for $199.99.
