The cancelled Nothing Power (1) was almost the best portable charger on the market

Remember the Apple AirPower? Back in September 2017, Apple announced a wireless charging device with the ability to simultaneously charge up to three devices, including Qi-compatible devices, at high speeds. It was cancelled before it ever saw production, but later on, a different (and equally ambitious) project came to life on the opposite side of the world: the Nothing Power (1) 65W portable wireless charger.

Nothing’s design for a high-speed, portable wireless power bank was a Swiss Army Knife of charging capability; even containing its own internal battery to charge several devices on the go. And yet, it flew a little too close to the sun. Like the AirPower preceding it, the Nothing Power (1) was cancelled internally before it ever saw the light of day.

In a sudden — and rather informative — interview between Nothing Head of Content Heru Prasetyo and Nothing CEO Carl Pei, published on October 24, we now know exactly what happened during the Nothing Power (1) development process that caused its downfall. For what it’s worth, we also now know that it existed in the first place (though some rumors floated around about it in 2021). It’s unfortunate, too, given how useful the translucent, uniquely-shaped charger would have been.

Designer: Nothing

Creating a wireless charging mat and a high-powered 65W charger (like Nothing’s 65W GaN Charger) require two different design approaches; the former needs to be able to support the weight and size of several devices, while the latter needs a bit more bulk to charge at rapid speeds. The Nothing Power (1) tried to be both things at once, and as a result, the heavy plastic casing required to hold the device together became its point of breakage.

Around the halfway point of the interview, Pei explained Nothing’s ultimate decision with an easy-to-follow analogy: “Think about it this way: if you’re in a car, driving somewhere, and you realize you’ve put the wrong location in the GPS, would you keep driving a bit more just to get to your final destination, or would you just do a U-turn to get to where you actually need to be?”

According to Pei, dropping the device would cause it to crack, and the team ultimately decided it wasn’t worth putting more time, effort, and resources into making it work. Another major issue was pricing, as the CEO mentioned it was a challenge figuring out how to balance the cost of production with a price that consumers would pay for.

The admittedly less ambitious Nothing Phone (1) Power (45W) is still set to release on October 30 for an MSRP of $35, though it’s only designed to charge a single Nothing Phone (1) at one time, and it requires a wall outlet to deliver a charge, meaning it isn’t exactly portable. A 45W charger with the power to deliver a 65% charge in 30 minutes is still a win for Phone (1) owners, even though it’s more of an iterative win. It doesn’t sound like the product Nothing originally dreamed of putting into production, but it’s faster than Phone (1) owners are used to, so it’s still worth celebrating.

This MagSafe Wallet + Power Bank + Tracking Device might just be the Ultimate iPhone Accessory ever

The people who say Less Is More clearly didn’t come across the Stympro. A 4-in-1 accessory for your iPhone, this bad-boy is a MagSafe Power Bank, a Wallet, a Phone Stand, and a ‘Find My’ compatible Tracking Device all bundled into one. Quite literally the perfect accessory for your iPhone, the Stympro charges your device, stores your cards, and lets you track your belongings if they ever get stolen. It measures 10mm thick (0.3 inches), weighs 100 grams (3.5 ounces), and also props up your phone if you want to FaceTime hands-free. Pretty neat, eh?

Designer: Stympro Tech

Call me a bit of a pessimist, but I wouldn’t expect Apple to make a gadget like the Stympro. Why? Because it just doesn’t make any business sense. Why sell them a 4-in-1 product when you could sell them 4 individual products, right?! The Stympro does the job of a wallet, a charger, a stand, and an AirTag, all of which together would end up costing you well over $200. The Stympro, on the other hand, is a nifty $79 gadget that packs everything into one convenient design. With a PU leather exterior (it isn’t FineWoven, but that’s alright), the Stympro snaps to the back of your iPhone using the MagSafe protocol. It sports a slot that holds 3 payment cards (just like Apple’s MagSafe wallet), charges your phone thanks to its built-in 2000mAh battery (just like Apple’s now discontinued MagSafe Battery pack), and also has its own Find My feature that lets you track the wallet if it ever goes missing. If that wasn’t enough, the wallet also doubles as a kickstand thanks to a built-in hinge, turning into an easel of sorts to prop your phone up in both landscape as well as portrait modes.

The Stympro’s stand feature works in landscape and in portrait.

The Stympro comes with a polycarbonate body that has a PU leather clad over it. N52 magnets on the inside allow the Stympro to attach securely to your iPhone, and a microfiber inner lining ensures the accessory doesn’t leave scratches on your phone’s glass back. A 2000mAh inner battery begins charging your phone the second it snaps on, relying on MagSafe for alignment and Qi-charging protocols to deliver 7.5W of wireless power to your device. To charge the Stympro’s inner battery, a USB-C port built into the bottom lets you merely plug it into your phone charger.

Stympro holds anywhere between 1-3 cards

Although designed to attach to your phone, the Stympro’s makers also envisioned a scenario where the 4-in-1 wallet isn’t affixed to the back of your smartphone. In the eventuality that your iPhone and Stympro get separated, a built-in tracker lets you determine the location of your wallet on the iPhone’s Find My app in real-time. A tweeter within the wallet also lets you remotely ‘ring’ your Stympro, allowing you to hear it if it’s in a messy or crowded space and is difficult to spot.

It’s easy to just dub the Stympro as a ‘multifunctional’ wallet, but what it does is just common sense, if you look at it from a consumer lens. It just doesn’t make sense for the four different products (power bank, wallet, stand, tracking device) to exist as independent objects. In fact, isn’t that the very ethos behind the iPhone? When Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, he dubbed it as an “iPod with touch controls, a phone, and a breakthrough internet communications device.” Through constant repetition of this very phrase, Jobs hinted at the fact that what he was talking about wasn’t three separate products – it was one single device, capable of doing multiple things. In all those ways, the Stympro is just that, a cleverly built accessory that handles multiple crucial roles while being the best damn companion your iPhone could ask for.

The Stympro comes in Midnight Black and Orange variants, starting at a discounted price of $79 with global shipping beginning in November of this year.

ROMOSS debuts Massive 40,000mAh Power Bank with 65W Charging for your Phone + Laptop

Armed with a whopping 40,000mAh battery that can charge your phone from 0 to 100 more than 10 times, and a built-in LED light that can run for 8 days on a fully charged battery, this new power bank from ROMOSS really pulls out all stops. Understandably larger than your conventional power bank, the ROMOSS Quick Charge Pro is about the same size as a smart speaker. It comes with a handle that makes it easy to carry around, has two USB-A ports, a Lightning USB-C port, and another bi-directional USB-C port that lets you either charge a fourth device, or charge the power bank itself. The Quick Charge Pro outputs a maximum 65W, and is the second in ROMOSS’ line-up of power banks which also include an Air, Max, and an Ultra that output 30W, 100W, and 200W respectively.

Designer: ROMOSS

A control panel on the top features the Quick Charge Pro’s ports and its two-button interface that let you switch the power bank on or off, and toggle the front-facing light that has three brightness modes. The two USB-A ports let you charge regular devices around you, while the USB-C ports offer much more power output, allowing you to fast-charge phones and tablets, as well as juice your laptop. GizmoChina reports that the power bank can charge “the iPhone 14 Pro (7.3 times), Huawei Mate 50 (6.4 times), MacBook Pro 14 (M1) (2.0 times), and iPad Pro 11 (5.0 times),” making it a hefty-yet-powerful battery-pack to have for the power-hungry.

The bright lamp gives the power bank yet another feature to make up for its large size. The Quick Charge Pro’s 148Wh battery isn’t rated for air-travel, but it’s perfect for camping trips, hikes, night-time backyard shenanigans, drive-in movie dates, or just having around the house during a power outage. The lighting system is bright and works well as a lantern, with three brightness settings and a whopping 8-day life on a fully-charged battery. ROMOSS’ Quick Charge Pro comes in three colors – Clear Water Green, Misty Silver, and Midnight Black, and is currently available only as a China-exclusive for 319 yuan ($43), but here’s hoping for a global release too…

Nothing power bank is the perfect matching accessory you need for your Phone (2)

Going off the mainstream designs comes with its set of rewards but can be a highly risky strategy if things go south. Carl Pie took the leap of faith and went on to implement his life’s philosophy of being transparent to the radical new line of products under the Nothing brand name.

After the initial chalk-and-cheese response for the hyped, first-ever earbuds and the smartphone, Nothing has worked on its mistakes and come up with the impressive Nothing Phone (2). Over the period of two years, we’ve seen a lot of Nothing-inspired concepts, and to be frank, all of them seem right in place!

Designer: Subhav

Now, to pair your powerful Nothing Phone (2) with a matching power bank, another concept ignites our expectations from the London-based consumer electronics manufacturer. Just imagine the cool vibe of all your see-through gadgets on the desk or in your backpack while traveling. A power bank is an essential accessory and every time you plug your Nothing Phone (2) into the gadget, that sense of unison is unmatchable.

The transparent aesthetics of the power bank display the innards in their full glory and are illuminated by the array of small warm-toned LEDs on the inside. This lends the accessory a diffused light on all sides for a Cyberpunkish look inside out. Creating a power bank makes even more sense for Nothing, given the usability and the no-frills nature of the product. With countless options on the market, a transparent power bank in Nothing’s product line would be another step in completing their ever-growing ecosystem.

The Anker Nano Power Bank may be the LAST perfect Lightning accessory for your iPhone 14

As Apple is almost certainly going to pivot to the USB-C standard for the iPhone, Anker’s compact power bank for the iPhone 14 stands out as one of the best lightning-port accessories for older iPhones, marking an end of a pretty glorious era.

With 12W charging capabilities, the Anker Nano (as compact as it is), delivers 2x faster charging than standard power banks. Designed to be about as wide as your smartphone, the Nano comes with MFi certification and sports a fold-out lightning connector that lets you plug the power bank directly into the bottom of your phone without requiring any cable. The integrated lightning port makes it perfect for charging your AirPods too, or even your Magic Mouse, should you choose!

Designed to be a compact charger you can carry around and plug right into your iPhone whenever you need some juice, the Anker Nano comes with a design that sort of integrates into the iPhone’s base, providing juice without the inconvenience of a bulky power bank. The 5,000mAh capacity is perfect for its size, and gives your iPhone at least two full charges when you’re low on battery, or a little more than one charge when your battery’s completely at 0%.

The fold-out port is a highlight of this power bank, eliminating the need for a charging cable

The Nano outputs 12W of charging, which measures significantly higher than most 7.5W power banks on the market. Sure, you could grab a MagSafe power bank from Apple, but the Anker Nano’s $29 price tag is incredibly hard to beat (especially compared to the MagSafe charger’s $99 price tag).

The 5,000mAh power bank comes in as many as 5 color options that elegantly complement the iPhone 14’s color variants. The foldable lightning port is a heaven-sent, not just because it eliminates the need for a cable, but also because the port folds flush into the power bank, making it easy to slip into a backpack or bag and carry around everywhere. To charge your Anker Nano, however, you’d need a USB-C cable (although you do get one in the box) which plugs into the Nano’s side.

The presence of a lightning port makes the Nano a wonderful accessory for the iPhone thus far. Come September, Apple will most likely migrate to the USB-C standard, pretty much rendering an entire market of existing products obsolete for newer models. MagSafe charging will still continue to be a thing, but the Anker Nano may just be the last perfect power bank for your iPhone… so if you don’t plan on upgrading to the iPhone 15, grab one now while they’re still hot! Lightning-based accessories may just cease to be a thing soon!

This seemingly real cassette tape is actually a fun power bank in disguise

Power banks or portable batteries are a common part of modern life. While our devices are continually getting more powerful, the batteries inside them haven’t exactly evolved at the same pace. Faster charging and power banks are our stopgap measures until batteries become a lot better without increasing their sizes. Thanks to this situation, the market for portable batteries has grown and thrived, offering people a dizzying number of choices ranging in size, capacity, and features. Of course, there are also different designs as well, but the majority of power banks seem to come in elegant yet drab shades of white, black, and gray. From time to time, however, we do come upon a distinctive-looking design, such as this rather cute power bank that emulates the look of an old-school cassette tape almost perfectly.

Designer: Remax

OK, it isn’t a completely faithful rendition of the well-known medium. It’s rather thick, closer to a Video 8 than a cassette tape, but the markings are all in the right places. Naturally, there are no reels to turn, which would have required a more complex internal design that would make it more inefficient as a portable battery. Accurate imitation shouldn’t get in the way of functionality, especially for a critical accessory such as this.

Regardless of those minor drawbacks, the Remax Powerbank Tape still packs quite a punch when it comes to visual appeal and “wow” factor. Whether it’s the yellow original, the Apple Lightning-equipped red variant, or the new green and yellow update, the cassette tape battery is sure to catch people’s attention, especially once you take it out and plug it into your phone. It even has a transparent case just to complete the illusion of an old-school product.

The Remax Powerbank Tape isn’t lacking in features either, at least on paper. The original model supports both the old micro USB connector and USB-C for input, while only the red has support for Apple Lightning to charge the power bank itself. The newer 2023 model sets itself apart by including two pull-out USB-C cables for output. There’s an assortment of other ports, though, including full-sized USB-A, and in some cases, a small LED flashlight. The location of the ports also depends on which model you buy, and there can be different options, depending on where you’re looking.

That said, you might have second thoughts about investing in this rather adorable blast from the past. Availability is a hit or miss, and you can’t exactly be assured of the quality when it comes to online retailers. There are also some inconsistencies with the specs, like the actual rated capacity of the battery versus its advertised capacity. Given its low average selling price, though, it still makes for an interesting gift, like those short-lived power banks some people give away at events.

This charming origami-inspired cube brings both light and power anywhere you need them

Daytime isn’t the only time you can enjoy the freedom that summer brings. The night can also be a source of adventure, fun, or even relaxation, especially when experienced outdoors and away from your usual abode. Staying outdoors at night, however, can bring up a few anxieties, not least of which is having a convenient light source or, more importantly, a power source for your indispensable gadgets. That often means lugging along some lantern or lamp in addition to a power bank, two things you need to be mindful of and two things you could potentially lose. Consider your worries now calmed with an innovative and sustainable travel companion that will illuminate your darkest nights, save your dying phone, and even protect you from mosquitoes!

MEGAPUFF is easy to open and goes flat pack with a quick twist! The origami design is simple and elegant.

They say that looks can be deceiving, and the MEGAPUFF definitely lives up to that aphorism, but in a very good way. At first glance, the white box looks like a simple yet beautiful paper lantern, not so different from traditional lanterns used in Japanese festivals, except perhaps for its cubical shape. The MEGAPUFF is, of course, quite literally a lantern, but that’s just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of what this is capable of. Because despite its minimalist appearance, it packs quite a lot of features that will make any activity more memorable, day or night, indoor or outdoor, no matter the season.

MEGAPUFF is both a portable lantern and power bank and unlike other combination products, it makes no compromises on either. A 4,000 mAh battery delivers all the power you need to charge up your mobile device through a USB-C port or deliver sufficient light to let you see in the dark of night or the darkness of your room. MEGAPUFF can be juiced up via the same USB-C connection, or you can charge it under the sun, providing you with a sustainable way to enjoy the conveniences of modern life, wherever you might be.

Seven light settings.

The light that MEGAPUFF provides is nothing to scoff at either, reaching a maximum of 300 lumens at its brightest. You won’t blind yourself, of course, especially with seven different settings for different light temperatures and intensities, including warm or bright, low or high, or a combination of both. There’s also a blinking red light setting that you won’t find in any portable lamp. This unexpected feature helps keep you safe in the dark, whether you’re riding a bike or signaling for an emergency. Red light therapy is also cited to help treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but it seems to have the opposite effect on mosquitoes and drives these bloodsuckers away instead.

Best of all, MEGAPUFF won’t take up much space in your car or camping gear. Thanks to origami technology, the 6.2×6.2 inch cube collapses down to a 0.75-inch high flat-packed square with a simple twisting motion. You don’t even have to turn the light off before collapsing or expanding the lantern, making it trivial to pack up or set up in a flash. This transforming cube is made from durable and eco-friendly sail cloth, leaving you with no worries about the product’s longevity or its effects on the environment. Whether you’re enjoying the great outdoors or lounging indoors, the MEGAPUFF collapsible lamp and battery will give you both light and power so that you can stop fretting and start enjoying your time.

World’s Fastest Graphene Power Bank Charges Your Phone and Laptop in a Flash

We’ve become so dependent on our electronic devices that it’s not unusual to see or hear people panicking when their phones or laptops get drained without a power outlet in sight. While these devices have gotten more powerful, the batteries powering them haven’t made the same leaps and bounds in advancements. Our only recourse is to minimize their power consumption or try to delay the inevitable with a handy power bank that can only extend your phone’s life once or twice, and often after a long period of waiting. Fortunately, power banks have actually seen significant progress, as demonstrated by the innovative BOLD 2 graphene power bank that boldly goes where no power bank has gone before, quickly charging as many as 6 different devices at the same time, including a power-hungry MacBook to 50% in just 30 minutes!

Designer: Carolina Gutierrez

Despite their portability and convenience, power banks are still limited by the same considerations as most batteries. You have to balance speed, safety, capacity, portability, compatibility, and ease of use all at the same time. It’s quite difficult to check all those boxes, which is why there are so many options and variations of the same product available, but it’s not impossible, as proven by the BOLD 2.

This ultra-fast power bank utilizes lithium polymer graphene composite cells, a technology that’s becoming more popular in these portable batteries, to deliver all that you can ever want in a power bank. Graphene’s unique properties allow it to output more power more efficiently, which ultimately leads to faster charging times. That MacBook is no match for the BOLD 2, letting you charge from 0% to 50% in half an hour, almost as if you were plugged into an outlet. In fact, any laptop that can charge over USB-C will be able to enjoy the same freedom from power sockets, thanks to the 140W USB-C port.

Different devices have different charging needs, of course, and the BOLD 2 has also got you covered. Two 30W USB-C ports would be enough for most phones, drones, and accessories, but there’s also a 100W port for more power-hungry devices like tablets and gaming handhelds. Even better, there’s a MagSafe charger for compatible phones and another specifically for the Apple Watch, so you won’t even have to bother with cables for a quick charge. That’s a combined output of 290W, something no other power bank can boast of, making the BOLD 2 truly the world’s fastest graphene power bank.

The BOLD 2 carries a whopping 27,000 mAh, which means you can charge a MacBook Air twice or an iPhone 14 Pro 8 times. The power bank itself charges at 100W, so it’s plenty fast, and you can even charge it and connected devices at the same time, thanks to pass-through charging technology. Never have to worry about tangled cords or needing multiple sockets when all you need is one outlet to charge them all.

Despite all these features, the BOLD 2 doesn’t compromise on quality or safety. With an aircraft-grade American anodized aluminum body, a fireproof polycarbonate wireless pad, and cutting-edge overheating and overcharging protection, this powerful power bank is made to be durable, safe, and long-lasting. And since it meets TSA/EASA guidelines, it’s the perfect travel companion, even when you’re high up in the air. Whether you’re a digital nomad, a creative on-the-go, a busy parent, or an adventurous traveler, the world’s fastest graphene power bank lets you stop worrying about battery life and start getting into the zone, wherever life or work takes you.

LAYER Design X Samsung’s 10,000mAh power bank explores maximum power in a minimal form

With its ambient, minimalist design that takes cues from nature, the Samsung Battery Pack sits perfectly on your work desk, blending in but standing out as a power bank with a uniquely different aesthetic. Designed in collaboration with LAYER Design, the battery pack boasts an organic shape that exudes a natural essence. Its pebble-like appearance is enveloped in a speckled plastic material that feels soft to the touch, adding a human touch to the device. The rounded shape gets sliced flat at one end, creating a surface for the charging ports. This asymmetrical design fits snugly in the hand, providing an enhanced and ergonomic user experience.

Designers: LAYER X Samsung

To reinforce the Samsung Battery Pack’s stone-like design, it comes with a beige, speckled plastic outer housing that has a smooth, matte finish reminiscent of a pebble or polished stone. The battery pack feels great in the hand, thanks to its curved surfaces (like an exaggerated version of Samsung’s own phones which come with rounded edges). The flat surface on the bottom allows the power bank to stand vertically when not in use (although don’t expect it to be stable), and an engraved “10” on the battery pack’s surface lets users quickly identify that the battery pack has a capacity of 10,000 mAh.

The Samsung Battery Pack with a capacity of 10,000 mAh and 25W power output is a high-performance device that offers speedy charging on the go. Equipped with Super Fast Charging technology, it can instantly boost the power of your devices and recharge just as quickly. The Battery Pack is designed with dual-port charging capability, allowing you to charge multiple devices simultaneously, such as your phone and earbuds, for added convenience and less hassle.

“We are proud to have partnered with Samsung since the very beginnings of LAYER. The new Battery Pack is a small part of a larger collaboration, and it is exciting to release the first of many products we are working on,” says Benjamin Hubert, founder of LAYER. “The Samsung Battery Pack is accessible, functional, and simple yet instantly identifiable and memorable, bringing a little bit of joy to the everyday.” The Samsung Battery Pack starts at $34.99 and is available globally in select outlets.

This tiny customizable power bank features swappable modules like a lamp and a replaceable battery

About as small as a BIC lighter, the Buddie is a handy little power bank that has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. Not only does it feature a replaceable Li-ion battery on the inside (so you can swap batteries instead of waiting for the entire power bank to charge), but it also comes with a unique modular architecture, allowing you to swap out the 20W USB-C head for a powerful portable lamp. The Buddie team also plans on launching new modules in the future including a portable fan and razor, giving your power bank new powers!

Designer: Buddie Design

While most power banks are clunky, heavy, monolithic devices, the Buddie sidesteps all those predispositions to just be refreshingly different. Power banks are supposed to be convenient, which is what the Buddie’s design tries to embrace. The power bank comes with a design compact enough to slide right into your pocket, and sports modular accessories that let you use the internal battery for more than just charging devices. Speaking of the internal battery, the Buddie actually lets you swap out the lithium-ion cell on the inside, letting you go from a dead power bank to a fully charged one just by replacing the battery. To facilitate this, the Buddie comes with two Li-ion cells – one that sits inside the power bank, and another that’s kept on reserve for when you need extra juice.

Functionally, the Buddie works just like any other power bank would. It sports a 5000mAh Li-ion battery on the inside capable of outputting up to 20W to fast-charge your phone, earbuds, or even your tablet. A charging module snaps onto one end of the Buddie to help you connect a cable to it, while the other end of the Buddie sports a lid that lets you open it to replace the internal battery.

Where the Buddie shines (both figuratively and literally) is in its modular design that lets you use the internal battery cell for more than just charging gadgets. The charging module on the end of the Buddie can be swapped out for an outdoor lamp module, turning your Buddie into a baton of light that’s perfect for the outdoors as well as the indoors. The 90-lumen light has a color range of 3500-4000K, mimicking the warmth of candlelight, and a run-time of 20 hours on a full battery.

This unique modular design is what truly sets the Buddie apart. While the folks behind Buddie are hoping to expand on this modular ecosystem with different swappable blocks, the idea in itself is quite a game-changer. It gives the power bank some much needed versatility, making it more of a must-have while traveling.

To facilitate the swappable battery system, each Buddie comes with two batteries (one active and one spare) as well as a dedicated charger that lets you keep your battery cells juiced at all times. The charger, which lets you charge even regular AA batteries, comes with a dedicated LED display to let you know charge levels and power consumption levels while plugged in.

The Buddie measures a mere 3.5 inches long and weighs just under 3.5 ounces with the battery inside. Each Buddie comes with two batteries, a charger, a USB-C charging module, and a lamp module. The Buddie team is working on other modules that should launch in the near future. Grab your Buddie bundle for a discounted price of $59, with global shipping as early as July 2023.
