The 2020 Red Dot Design Concept Awards are open for entries till May 15th!

If there’s one positive element to this global lockdown, it’s that we’re forcing ourselves into a state of isolation where it’s easier to spend more time with your thoughts, tune the world’s buzz out, feel bored, and nurture your brain into thinking of your next big idea… With all this free time on your hands, it’s the perfect moment to begin working on those ideas, realizing them into concepts that you can use either to add a flourish to your portfolio, or to transform your career by sending it for an award.

One of the world’s most prestigious design awards, the Red Dot Design Concept Awards, is currently looking for ideas that can make a difference. The Red Dot Design Concept Awards bring light to innovative and inspirational design concepts. These concepts start with a game-changing idea, and transform into a product visualization. The purpose of the Red Dot Design Concept Award is to scope out these interesting projects and bring them into the limelight, so that one day, they may develop into practical products that change our world. The Award’s 2020 edition is currently open for entries from students, studios, professionals, and companies till the end of its Submission Period on the 15th of May… so if you’ve got a great idea you’d like to work on and have the world look at, get working on it! 01. Tri-Cane by Jordan Lau Tsz Chun
This nifty walking stick can turn into a stool when you need! The Tri-cane considers the needs of the person using it, offering more than just support. The cane’s innovative design allows the handle to open up into a seat, while the cane itself comes with three collapsible legs that open outwards, turning it into a tripod-stool.

02. Harbour Fishbowl by Ma Xiaoqi & Ma Zhe
You know one of those ‘kick myself for not having thought of it first’ ideas? This is a prime example. The function of the Harbour fishbowl is explained in one simple image above. The fishbowl comes with a smaller volume attached to its side. When you want to change the water, tip the bowl over so that the water gently spills out. The water level should gradually recede and the fish should find itself inside the smaller volume in the fishbowl. Now simply pour fresh water in and you’re done. That’s it! The fish doesn’t need to be trapped, baited, and pulled out of its bowl and put into a glass or plastic bag while you change the water in its fishbowl. It simply has its own safe space to reside in while you change the water in the bowl every week or so. So simple, so sensible.

03. Pen Fan by Arman Emami
Created as a cross between a Pantone shade card and a stationery set, the Pen Fan fits 8 different flat-head sketch pens in a small, easy-to-carry set. The flat pens are connected to each other, forming a neat Japanese-fan style layout that displays all the 8 colors for you to pick and choose from. Each individual sketch pen is detachable too, allowing you to snap off and on pens to create a palette of your choice! Stationery-hoarders, you’ve been warned!

04. CPR First Aider by Fang Di, Li Pengcheng & Yu Yuanyi
Slightly more than half of the American population claims to know how to perform CPR. That means there’s roughly a 50% chance that a bystander would know how to resuscitate you. CPR First Aider aims at being able to increase those chances. Not only does it help people who don’t know CPR, it helps people who do know CPR to perform it efficiently. The CPR First Aider is an extensive kit that includes a breathing mask that automatically delivers oxygen while assisting the patient to breathe along with a CPR module that has 4 legs and chest straps to ensure stable, sustained and effective pressure to the patient. An LCD screen on the top guides you through the procedure, while also displaying the patient’s stats blood oxygen concentration and electrocardiogram in real-time. Designed to fold into a compact device, the CPR First Aider could easily be stored anywhere a fire extinguisher could be placed.

05. Barrier-Free Braille Board by Shenzhen Pinlasuo Product Planning
Designed as an upgrade to traditional braille boards or braille slates, the Barrier-Free Braille Board helps you compose text in braille and easily write/punch it down on a piece of paper that’s sandwiched between a base-plate, and an upper plate that contains a sliding guide for punching the alphabets out. Like most braille boards, text on this board is written in reverse, but the Barrier-Free Braille Board has an extra plastic frame to hold the paper in place, so you can flip the paper over periodically to read what you’ve written. The overall design is made to be more ergonomic than off-the-shelf boards, while the sliding punch-plate acts almost like a cursor, letting you know where you’re at in the typing process, if you decide to stop midway.

06. Lightweight Skateboard by Wang He of Hanma Creative
This porous skateboard may seem outwardly fragile, but it’s designed and engineered to be as strong as any other regular skateboard, if not stronger. Designed to be more sturdy and ecologically conscious than wood, the Lightweight Skateboard is die-casted using a magnesium alloy that’s finished using CNC Machining. The high-strength, low-weight skateboard comes with an adjustable wheel-base too, giving it even more of an edge over your regular wooden skateboard!

07. Multifunctional Convenient Shaver by Kong Dezheng
We may be stuck at home for a bit but that shouldn’t stop us from looking good, right? Kong Dezheng’s Multifunctional Convenient Shaver is a one-piece, two-part product that lets you take control of frizzy, unkempt facial hair. The pen-shaped device slides right into your pocket, allowing you to carry it around with you wherever you go. When needed, the pen packs a pair of grooming scissors at one end, and a folding razor at the other, giving you the ability to groom yourself on the go. Quite nifty if you ask me!

09. Painting Stool by Shen Wenjiao
Solving the problem of having to deal with functionally designed collapsible stools that look pretty displeasing when folded, Wenjiao’s Painting Stool transforms… well, into a painting! The printed artwork comes with a wooden frame that opens out into an X, turning the canvas into a comfortable seat. While I wouldn’t want people resting their bums against my artwork, it’s a neat way to take any nice graphic and transform it into a stool you can sit on when you’re running low on furniture, and hang on the wall when you’re done!

10. Code Reel Table by Zinus Inc.
Imagine never being too far from a plug-point. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?! The Code Reel Table fulfills every gadget-lover’s dream of always having a charging point in the vicinity. With a wheelbarrow-esque design and an extension wire that lets you wheel the table anywhere around the house (or even your garden) but still be connected to a plug-point, the Code Reel Table is perfect for working on your laptop from your sofa, or perhaps escorting your Amazon Echo to your kitchen, all while staying plugged in. The table comes with two plug points and five USB ports to power all your gadgets, along with a neat circular surface to either place your tech, or a nice cup of coffee while you’re being productive from one corner of your home! And when you want to return your table to its original place, a button helps you quickly and automatically retract the extension cord!

This survival kit takes care of you and your pet during emergencies!

With climate change rearing its ugly head and sending shockwaves throughout the world, our planet has been experiencing a lot of changes. Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, or even the recent Australian bushfires are beginning to gaining frequency. We’ve been trained to be prepared for such situations, following drills and guidelines, maintaining survival kits for when they’re needed, and more. However, in such strenuous moments, what becomes of our furry friends? Our pets are members of our family, and preparing for their safety during such times is essential. Almost 32% of pets find themselves as strays on the street during such disasters, and pet mortality is supposed to be 40%. For such life-threatening situations, designer Ching Lin Tsai designed Escapet. Escapet is an escape bag, that aims to look after you and your pet’s needs during emergencies.

Escapet is a winner of the Red Dot Award for the year 2019.

Made from Tetoron, an abrasion-resistant, and lightweight polyester fiber, Escapet combines a survival tool kit, and a pet carrier to create a bag equipped to deal with extreme situations. The bag consists of two components, the pet carrier, and the survival kit. Both can be separated and used individually if required.

The survival kit consists of the bare essentials such as water, food, a first aid kit, life-saving, and hygiene tools, and also has sufficient space for your personal belongings.

The second component is the pet carrier, easy-to-fold, and easy-to-store, you can slip your pet into it. It has been equipped with a pocket, which when rolled down, exposes a mesh screen, allowing your pet to stay connected with you and the rest of the world.

The carrier bag and survival kit can be combined together to create a piece of pet furniture, on which your pet can sit and lounge about. In its combined state, Escapet is meant to be carried like a backpack, with your pet and the things you need to survive a high-risk situation, all packed in! The neon orange zipper is meant to increase the chances of being spotted and rescued. However, the detachable pet carrier bag also has functionality in our daily lives, making Escapet a unique design that serves you perfectly during emergencies and even on an ordinary day!

 

Furniture for Instagram-lovers: This side-table is also a photo studio

This conceptual side-display-table comes either from a place of complete vanity or sheer creativity, but nevertheless, the Photo Table definitely feels like an instant must-have. Imagine never having to worry about setting up your mini-studio for a product photo-shoot. Just place it on a table, point some lights through the table’s diffuser-hood, and there you have it….perfect images for posting online. And the best part of it is not having to pack your studio up after you’re done because it goes right back to being a piece of furniture that sits somewhere in the living-room-space of your quirky studio apartment.

Jarra is a self-cooling clay flask that combines pre-refrigeration techniques with a contemporary form

It’s really difficult to imagine a life before electric refrigeration existed, but we humans had our ways of naturally cooling liquids back in the day. Meet Jarra, a modern flask that takes inspiration from naturally-cooling terracotta vessels, while bringing a timely bit of innovation to it. You see, terracotta relies on porosity to help naturally cool water, but these pores can often lead to bacterial growth if not maintained well. Modern clay vessels circumvent this problem by using ceramic glazing to close these pores, but this eventually cancels out the clay’s natural cooling effect.

Jarra uses special glazing techniques to still meet safety standards without compromising on the clay’s natural cooling effect. Its slender-neck makes the design ergonomically sound, allowing you to hold and pour it with ease. Coupled with a food-safe aluminum cap, Jarra plays on a duality of old-techniques wrapped in a design that feels suitably modern, giving you a bottle that’s both rustic and new-age, and can almost instantly cool water without requiring any electricity!

The Adjustable Pivot Seesaw helps your child learn while playing!

I was a pretty skinny kid growing up, which roughly translates to “I hated the seesaw growing up”. As a kid who didn’t weigh much, I spent most of my time on the seesaw just suspended in mid-air, as the kids heavier than me held me hostage. It isn’t really my fault I had an incredible metabolism, but back in the day, I’d have really appreciated something like this adjustable pivot seesaw!

The working behind the concept is pretty simple. Shift the pivot on the seesaw and the amount of weight needed to bring it to equilibrium changes too. Make one side longer, and a lighter kid sitting on it will weight as much as the heavier kid on the shorter end. The Adjustable Pivot Seesaw is a great playground toy to tinker with the concept of equilibrium, as kids of different weights play on it. It’s a great toy even for adults who want to enjoy some quality time on the seesaw with their kids!

This luxurious house-boat hopes to help humans survive the rising-sea-level crisis

While our ultimate goal as a species is to prevent sea levels from rising and drowning civilizations, there is a slight concern about how we would survive in this dystopic impending future. Poland-based Wojciech Morsztyn designed the Ocean Community, an ocean-based domestic habitat (I’d call it a yacht, but that wouldn’t really be accurate) that lets humans essentially live and form colonies at sea.

The idea of the Ocean Community vessel is to extend a city’s coastline. By existing not more than 800 meters from the coast of a city, the dwellers of the Ocean Community can easily make their way to the city to access facilities and enjoy a normal city life before heading back to their sea-based home. “The creation of these new structures will serve as fully functional living spaces connected with existing land infrastructure so that new ocean communities become a natural extension of coastal cities”, says Morsztyn, designer of the Ocean Community concept. The vessels will also rely on the abundance of sun, water, and wind to harness energy, helping them live off the coast but also off the electric grid. With two levels and a beautiful panoramic view of the sea (as well as the coastline of the nearby city), the Ocean Community could also be an extension of hotels and resorts, wanting to offer their customers with a novel experience.

This hammer comes with its own finger-guard, pry-tool, and detachable spirit level

It seems like every corner of the Tuk Hammer has a little Easter Egg of functionality. Perhaps one of the most refreshing takes on the tool, the Tuk has a design that’s both eye-catching and multi-functional. For starters, it comes with a steel head on one end for hammering on hard surfaces, and a rubberized head on the opposite side for softer surfaces. Embedded into the Tuk’s T-junction are a vertical and horizontal leveling tool as well as a finger-guard that lets you hammer away without accidentally hitting yourself. The dual-headed hammer even manages to fit a nail prying tool on its upper surface, and lastly, comes with a safety strap that allows the Tuk Hammer to be secured to the user’s wrist, preventing damage and accidents caused by a falling tool when working from a height!

This portable handheld drill comes with an X and Y axis, like a milling machine!

Titled the MODS, this modular drill set is pretty neat for the reason that it’s actually a portable VMC or vertical milling center. It uses a suction system and a lightweight frame to make drilling easier and reduce the strain on your hand as you hold your drill up to the drilling surface. Suction cups allow you to adhere the MODS to practically any surface, while a smart platform aligns the bit to be perpendicular to the drilling surface. That’s all you really need from that point onward! You can easily drill evenly spaced holes in a perfect line, thanks to the MODS’ X and Y axes, without ever really worrying about alignment!

Designed to be compact enough to fit into any space, yet comfortable enough to have you sink right in with your favorite book, the Conch comes with a molded-plywood inner body and a dual-density foam outer body, giving it structure as well as supple softness. The chair’s form conforms to the contours of the body, allowing you to sit comfortably, while also conveniently having a storage unit right under you for everything from books to a cushion to other bric-a-brac. Heck, add a rug inside it and it could even be your pet cat’s den.

Conch’s design combines a dual-purpose approach with an eye-catching design, making it a chair that just invites you to interact with it, sit on it, and marvel at its use of form and hollow space to create something that is doubly functional!
