So Now Even Dogs Get Their Own Remote Control
If the argument over who gets to hold the remote control never ends in your household, maybe you can settle things down by relinquishing control to your dog. That’s right, “a researcher at in animal computer design at University of Central Lancashire collaborated with pet food brand Wagg to create the world’s first television remote just for dogs.” The device features oversized buttons, and is colored blue and yellow to accommodate your canine’s colourblindness. It’ll let your pooch channel surf while you’re away, and settle arguments when you’re not. It’s currently under development, and Wagg plans to pitch it to tech companies once it’s ready. No word on price or availability.

NEEO Smart Remote Controls All Your Devices
It’s possible to control many devices in your home through your smartphone. But if you’ve ever tried you’ll know it’s somewhat of a fragmented and annoying experience. You have to open one app for your lights. Another for your TV. Yet another for your alarm system. Well, the NEEO Smart Home Automation System hopes to take all those frustrations away by offering you a system that interfaces with everything, and includes a high-density touchscreen remote to navigate the OS. The system consists of two parts, the brain and the remote. The brain is a hockey puck-shaped device with more sensors and emitters than you can throw a stick at: 4 antennas for Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth BLE (low energy), Wi-Fi, 6LowPAN, ZigBee, Thread and Z-Wave protocols, as well as 360° infrared coverage. It stores information on about 30,000 devices, even older televisions, and knows automatically how to interact with them. The Remote features a 291ppi touchscreen (higher density that a Retina iPad), with which you control all your devices without having to switch apps or configure much of anything. “The NEEO remote comes with a unique patent-pending technology which recognizes your hand when you pick it up: sensors in the remote detect your palm to match you with your profile and display your playlists, films, and favorites, instantly.”
Think of NEEO as a universal remote on crack. It sounds pretty awesome, especially if your home is filled with AV equipment that you’re constantly struggling to control. It’ll set you back a $219 pledge on the Kickstarter campaign which is 1,000% funded at the moment. No joking, people are excited about this.

This Star Trek Phaser Doubles As A TV Remote
It’s one thing to buy a novelty replica of a TV prop. It’s quite another to buy a Star Trek Phaser so faithful to the original that it was made by 3D scanning the last remaining prop from the TV series. It’s also fully licensed by CBS, and doubles as a programmable infrared remote with which you can control your TV, iPod docks and many other gadgets. And when it’s not changing channels, this Phaser plays a wide range of original sound effects from the series. It also vibrates and lights up each time it’s “fired”, and features a removable side door to reveal an illuminated dilithium crystal power cell. It’s made from a matte nickel plated die cast, and comes with a museum-quality metal stand, with hidden magnetic catch. The carrying case is made from rugged ABS plastic, printed with a blank name plate ready for you to make it your own. The only thing you might have trouble doing is vaporizing rocks and alien life forms with it, but at £119.95 (roughly $200), we’d say that’s good enough.

Logitech Upgrades Harmony Universal Remotes
On Monday Logitech announced some new upgrades and integration with its universal remotes, bringing control over your Sonos speakers and integrating some new on demand media including Amazon’s new Fire TV.
With the upgrades, users of the Harmony Ultimate and Harmony Smart Control on their smartphones will be able to control the volume, playback and favorite access for their Sonos speakers directly from the remote control or smartphone app. With the Smart Control app (only), users will also be able to use the keyboard or voice command to search for content through streaming media devices including Amazon’s Fire TV, Apple TV and Roku.
The team has also added some ease to the installation of a new universal remote with some automatic detection of your Sonos speakers, Roku devices and even Phillips Hue lights. The Harmony Ultimate runs $349.99 and the Harmony Ultimate Hub that connects to your smart device goes for $99.99, both available now.
