World’s first hubless handmade rollerblade skates are rugged enough to go off-road too

When it comes to crazy two wheeled DIYs, there are only a handful that even come close to YouTuber “The Q” for his out-of-the-box creations. The best part, this relentless DIYer never seizes to amaze us with his eye-popping builds. Whether it’s the square-wheeled bicycle, wheeless bicycle or the airless tires.

Yet again, the inventive genius has leveled-up another means of commuting in the metropolis. An ordinary pair of rollerblade skates get the bump-up to be a capable off-roading set of wheels to tread any uneven terrain that your regular rollerblades just can’t do.

Designer: The Q

The inline skates that the DIYer owns, now graduate to a set of cool looking hubless roller skates encapsulated in a durable frame and chunkier wheels. The build kicks-off with a set of wheels salvaged from a toy car most probably that are sawed from the inside and then smoothened. This makes way for the metal bearings fitted snugly on the inside.

The next phase in this rollerblade inline skates DIY is to cut a steel frame to secure the wheels in place and act as the base for the top of the inline skates to sit on. Everything is secured in place with screws and the final step involves sanding and spray painting it to get a cool look.

Compared to some other extensive DIYs by the man, this one seems slightly easier to make by his standards. This gives keen builders opportunity to make one for themselves or their kids as a weekend project.

One thing I’d like to point out is that the wheels should be pivoting outwards by a small angle to prevent stress on the legs, and also improve the riding balance. One more thing – they’ll look way cooler with a Tron-like theme, don’t you think?

These smart roller skates lend you superhuman walking power using conveyor belt tracks

If you remember Rollkers spotted at CES 2015 – well, the gadget again surprised tech pundits at CES 2023. Created by a French startup that goes by the same name, the walking assistance roller skates are now 8 years in the making and agonizingly close to a production version.

Unlike any usual roller skates, these smart rollers give the user superhuman ability to move (or should I say cruise) at superhuman speed on their feet. The company is working with third-party manufacturers to bring Rollkers to the market at a justified price in the next couple of years, and we are eagerly waiting.

Designer: Rollkers

These smart roller skates can be hooked on and don’t require any practice time to get going. With the embedded smart sensors, they can identify walking motion, running, or when the user is standing. Accordingly, they provide the amount of thrust needed or stopping power to keep the user from going off balance. The conveyer belt tracks on the base of Rollkers move based on the user’s movement – it’s almost like walking and sliding at the same time which is kind of fascinating and weird at the same time. Something like a permanent travelator attached to the feet for effortlessly moving through spaces.

The rubber tracks bend in the middle so that the user can walk with confidence. Everything is synced perfectly for a seamless walking experience – things like walking speed, the direction of motion, or any intention of running. In case the user wants to move fast and swiftly, the motors are set into action and the speed is doubled to around 11 km/h. The two roller skates weigh 4.5 kg each and provide motion input for around 30 minutes on a single charge. For the darker hours of the day, these fancy roller skates come with bright LED lights for better awareness.

While for now, Rollkers seem like a fantasy gadget, don’t be surprised if you see people moving past you on such things in a couple of years’ time. The price could be a deal breaker if they cost anything around $700, so the makers need to bring that down considerably for general adoption by the interested Gen-Z crowd.

Acton R5 Rocket Skates Can Cruise for 5 Miles and Look Weird Doing It

Acton is showing off some cool new skates that are now available to pre-order. Rocket Skates might be a misleading name –  they’re not actually propelled by rockets, and that is probably a good thing. The battery-powered R5 Rocket Skates look a bit like wheelchairs for your feet and are sure to get you noticed.

You clamp them on your feet and they have a battery inside that helps you zip around the city having fun or getting to work. The battery will let you roll around for up to five miles at speeds up to 12 mph, and they take just 90 minutes to charge. Acceleration and braking can be controlled by a remote or an app on iOS and Android devices. That app will also track your route and distance traveled.

As you can see in the video below, they take a little work to get used to, but they look pretty cool in action:

The R5 Rocket Skates will ship sometime this month for $399, making them the most value priced skates in the line to date.

Circular Skates “From The Future”

post-modern-skateboard-640x533

Now that it’s 2015 and it’s clear we won’t be getting in our hoverboards anytime soon, maybe we can start thinking about some other futuristic-looking alternatives to our current skates and rolling boards. The Sidewinding Circular Skates are some people’s idea of what that might look like, except they’re available now… and they’ll make you look like a tool. But hey, we don’t judge:

These are the annular skates that are propelled by leaning side to side, allowing you to skateboard without having to push off the ground. Riders simply place their feet on the two platforms and lean side-to-side to rotate the rubber wheels around the feet, propelling riders forward in a serpentine motion similar to longboard skateboarding. Since the wheels are not connected, riders can easily perform 720° spins and turn on a dime, while stopping is achieved by placing toes on the ground. The wheels are 10″ in diameter, allowing them to traverse short grass and dirt surfaces.

There’s an included rod with which you can join the wheels and stabilize them to make your learning experience easier. And to be honest, we imagine we’d need that rod if we were trying to learn to ride these; “placing our toes on the ground” as a method for stopping sound like a few broken bones waiting to happen. If you like to live dangerously, it’ll cost you $100 to own.
