This design studio turns cardboard boxes into stools & animal shelters in a bid to reduce waste!

Sustainability is taking over the world, and especially the design world as they come up with solutions, by a storm. You can see it everywhere from architecture to products and one of my favorite categories is packaging design. By innovating the product structure, the design transformed small common objects that are easily forgotten by people into something more useful and meaningful.

Designed as a packaging solution for Pampers, P-Box is an innovative project that can help the diaper brand reduce its packaging waste. The aim was to give more meaning to the cardboard shipping boxes by transforming them into simple (yet special!) things. The online shopping industry is massive and shipping boxes are the largest recyclable waste category – in fact, based on data there are 50 million tons of discarded cardboard boxes became waste in China which is also one of the largest markets and manufacturers for the industry. So P-Box gives these cardboard boxes a new purpose by turning them into innovative objects for daily use. You can turn it into a cat shelter, a lightweight stool that can be flat-packed, use it to store items you only occasionally use like that guests-only dinnerware, and lastly it can also be used as a sustainable alternative to gift bags/wrapping papers.

To transform the box into the mentioned objects, you don’t need any assembly expertise – it is just basic craft knowledge and using the existing material at hand. “Through different topics and concepts, the design did not just meet the basic functionalities for daily uses but also other humanitarian benefits, such as compartmentalizing wastes, giving homeless animals a shelter, etc. This brought an entirely different perception on such an ordinary thing, this huge contrast brought awareness to the public that ‘small actions can make a great difference,” says the team at RONG Design. Too simple? Then there is no excuse to not repurpose your next online order box!

Uncle Iroh approves of this bamboo-inspired tea set!

You already know Uncle Iroh would 100% approve of this simple bamboo tea set, he would probably give you a wise lesson on being like bamboo as he brews his tea! I can already hear his voice saying “Zuko be like bamboo, resilient, flexible, and versatile.”

This tea set will appeal to any minimalist looking to add zen to their kitchen and their life. Designed for a luxury hotel brand located in southern China’s natural treasure—Jintan District, it is a nod to the scenery and bamboo fields. Jintan is known to have some of the best bamboos and high-grade green tea, both these natural gems are blended into this one tea set. “We perfectly interpreted and integrated the bamboo shape with the tea set for tea ceremony. The minimal bamboo-shaped tea set showcases the elegant contour of the product and the features of the tea set as well,” explains the team. It includes a teacup, a teapot, and a tea spoon that can all be stacked on top of each other to create your own bamboo. The little leaf/green shot is a thoughtful detail turned into a spoon that highlights the elegance of bamboo.

The stacking is symbolic of the layers of different steps of a traditional tea brewing process. It gives you a chance to enjoy the gradual progress and appreciate it – as Uncle Iroh would say, the tea is the reward.

Meet the lifestyle products that embody Tumi’s legendary ballistic nylon, wheel and tag design!

With over 40 years of experience in their arsenal, Tumi is one of the most well-known manufacturer of high-end travel suitcases and bags. Named after a Peruvian ceremonial knife used for sacrifices, Tumi possesses a great reputation for the quality, functionality, and durability of their products. In fact, their signature black-on-black ballistic nylon material and handy travel tags have become iconic symbols, allowing people to instantly recognize the brand anywhere! Inspired by their classic designs, Shanghai-based RONG Design decided to focus on the brand’s signature elements and honor them, by recreating them into daily objects that can be used in day to day life. They created a series of products to highlight the transformation of Tumi’s classic products into modern lifestyle pieces.

Deemed ‘Perfecting Yourself’ the collection consists of three products; Life, Path and Strength. These represent the spirit of continuous innovation and improvement that the brand and its products possess. RONG Design focused on Tumi’s three signature elements- the travel tag, the wheel, and their ballistic nylon material. They took Tumi’s travel tag and transformed it into a solar-powered flashlight called ‘Life’. Still retaining the original form of the tag, the new and improved travel tag can be used to light up even the darkest corners. Portable and nifty, it’s the perfect tool when it’s ‘lights out’ time! The second piece in the collection is called ‘Path’. RONG Design adopted the wheels present in all of Tumi’s luggage and created a rolling measurer out of them. Imitating a wheel, ‘Path’ functions as a measurement scale that can be used to calculate the measurements of curved objects. And last but not least is; ‘Strength’. For ‘Strength’ they used TUMI’s black-on-black ballistic nylon to create a wallet. The one-piece wallet showcases the durability and protective element of the ballistic nylon, while also managing to look super smart!

RONG Design has managed to adopt some of the legendary elements of Tumi’s products, and in turn has created a range of modern lifestyle products that are sleek, portable and highly functional!
