This clever nutcracker design was inspired by the shape of a carabiner clip!

There’s a certain charm to the Nutcracker designed by Rudolph Schelling Webermann for Normann Copenhagen, and this charm stems from the fact that the Nutcracker doesn’t really look like a nutcracker.

With its slick, modern design, Webermann’s nutcracker design looks more like a carabiner clip, but it is, in reality, a Class 2 lever that lets you easily crack nuts of varying sizes. The carabiner-shaped nutcracker comes with a closed-loop design and is made with a silicone outer body that’s comfortable to hold as you apply pressure. Metal inserts on the inside of the silicone clip let you place and crack-open nuts of different sizes, and the closed-loop silicone design acts as both a hinge as well as a spring, allowing the Nutcracker to easily break open the toughest of nuts before returning back to its original shape.

This modular power bank was designed to be like sharing a cookie that you can split into two halves!

Picture this: you and your friend are both at a concert, and as we all do, you are recording it so you can relive the moments later. Uh oh, what’s that? The low battery notification comes on and the concert is just about to end so you and your friend need to call your Ubers! But you only have one power bank…now what? Well, just split it like a cookie and each one of you gets half! Both your phones are charging, your concert footage was saved, and you were able to find the right car. Crisis averted with Share the Power! Now while that may be a one-off situation, there are many moments in our life where we literally wish we could split the power bank and charge two devices simultaneously and that is exactly what this concept was designed to do.

Share the Power is a concept design that imagines this tech accessory to be more than just an ordinary power bank – it is the first one that lets you share the energy or, how I like to call it, electrical vibes! It consists of two identical halves that can be used individually as small power banks or clubbed together as one large power bank. So you and your friend will have not have to worry about your mobile devices running out of battery even if you have to part ways. If you are a single user, I would recommend using one half at a time so you have a backup for your power bank too.

Each half has an LED charge status indicator and an integrated USB-C port + cable for charging your devices. The power bank features 4 magnetic connectors to connect the two halves. When both halves are connected, the energy will be evenly distributed through metal contact and therefore only one cable is needed to recharge both halves. The aim is to have intelligent high-speed (i.e. Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0) charging that transfers energy equally between the two modular parts. So go on, discover the world without having to worry about the battery running out for your devices.

A minimal smartwatch that actually helps you unplug from phone notifications!

Imagine this. You are working at your desk, when in a brief lull of productivity, you wonder, What time is it? You press a button on your phone – just to check the time, you swear – and you notice a few notifications as well: a breaking news headline, a text from a friend, a new follower on Instagram, etc. Almost reflexively, you unlock your phone. Just five minutes, you tell yourself. I’ll skim through these alerts and get back to work. Of course, in my case, I blink, and those five minutes have turned into twenty.

Scenario two: you are out for a relaxing, socially-distant hike. The fresh air and natural sunlight are exactly what you need at this moment – a break from your tech-heavy life. What time is it? You wonder. You click your lock screen – just to check, you swear – but then curiosity takes over. This hiking trail is too quiet – boring, to be honest. You want a brief distraction from this peaceful environment…which is how you end up online.

Our attachment to our phones is a difficult one to break. Even though I can limit my screentime by restricting data usage on certain apps, blocking notifications, or setting my phone to Do Not Disturb, these self-imposed measures don’t always work. They don’t stop me from opening social media or playing Candy Crush.

A few weeks ago, I covered a wifi-router concept that gave users the option to disconnect from the internet. In a similar vein, the TIME OFF! watch gives you the ability to mute your smartphone notifications. How does it work? Well, the process is pretty straight-forward. Similar to many smartwatches and Fitbits, the TIME OFF! has a companion app where you can control all the settings. With the app, you can choose which apps and alarms to mute during your “time off” mode. Once you save those settings, you can, at any point, silence those alerts by pressing the red button on your TIME OFF! watch. You don’t even have to pick up your phone.

My favorite aspect of the watch is its simple design. Yanko has featured plenty of minimalistic concepts, but this one is the most minimal watch that I’ve seen. The watch consists of a solid-colored band and a face with a small LED sliver that displays the time. The screen doesn’t even fill the entire watch surface! I love this design choice because it reinforces the product’s mission: to eliminate distractions. The TIME OFF! wants you to be present in your environment, to forget about your email inbox, the news, and the passage of time.

The product uses a textile strap that is also quite versatile. You can wear the TIME OFF! as a watch – and switch out the band for a more fashionable one – but you can also tie it on your belt loop or a bag strap. It’s a simple idea, but one that also contributes to the product’s mission: to remove all the little things that may tempt you to check your phone. Don’t worry about the time, this watch seems to say. It’ll still be here, on your bag if you need it, but you should enjoy this break from the digital world.

Space-Saving Seating

Space can be a limiting factor when it comes to furnishing the interiors of commercial spaces, with communal areas being restricted or seating being placed in walkways causing an inconvenience and proving a hazard. The Landing aims to offer a solution to this space-related problem, and it does so in an unobtrusive and rather ingenious manner.

Landing’s designers recognized that seating doesn’t have to be a permanent feature; occasional and short use leads to the items of furniture being a hindrance rather than a help. Landing consists of two basic sound-absorbent modules: a flat one 60 x 60 cm in size with an element upholstered with 10-mm-thick foam and covered in fabric and an equally large three-dimensional moulded relief element that can be used in three ways depending on the way it’s fitted: as a shelf (with an additional powder-coated steel surface), rotated vertically by 90° as an upright method of creating a zone, providing a screen or a cosy corner for leaning on and turned 180° horizontally to perch on. The modules are placed in assembly frames and can be used in any number of combinations. They improve acoustics, create little corners for chats or phone calls, offer spaces to leave drinks or smartphones and take the strain off people’s feet. The covers come in seven standard colors to tap into more design options and allow Landing to be used as color-coded signage systems.
