BAGO Glovebox Clip Keeps Bags Standing Upright While Driving

Filed under products I didn’t know I needed but am now questioning how I ever lived without, the BAGO keeps bags standing upright in your car while driving to help prevent spills or damage to their contents. The product consists of a plastic anchor that can be closed in your car’s glovebox and a seatbelt-like strap with a metal spring clamp at the end that can be attached to bags sitting in the passenger side footwell to keep them standing upright. What a time to be alive!

Currently an already-funded Kickstarter project and now on Indiegogo, $22 will get you a BAGO when they’re shipped around May. Will you be purchasing one? Or will you continue to put your groceries in the trunk like a caveperson? Get with the times! Alternatively, you can accidentally leave a grocery bag on the roof of your car, as I did a few weeks ago, and spill everything as you’re backing out of the parking spot. I’ve never seen bananas so bruised before.

And to think, just 30 years ago, human passengers didn’t even have to wear seatbelts. Now even our shopping bags are wearing them! And while this certainly is a problem solver if you’re traveling with an open can of paint or nuclear material, what I really need is something that prevents me from locking my keys in the car because I’m really not sure how I’m getting home from work today.

Put a Wookiee in Your Car with the Chewbelta Chewbacca Bandolier Seatbelt Cover

So you fancy yourself a Han Solo sort, huh? You are a rogue and a scoundrel, but what you lack is a Wookiee co-pilot for your very fast hunk of junk. Well, here is the next best thing the “Chewbelta,” a Chewbacca bandolier seatbelt cover.

Put it on the passenger side of your car so that every passenger becomes your trusted Wookiee sidekick. Maybe give them a bowcaster too. Or wear it yourself and be both pilots while navigating traffic and pretending it’s an asteroid field.

I guess you could also get yourself a life sized wookie and strap it into the passenger seat, that way you can use the carpool lane and have an authentic wookie co-pilot. Grab one today for just $20(USD) over on Amazon.

Just What We Need: This Seatbelt Jolts Drowsy Drivers to Their Senses

Smart Seatbelt

Numerous car accidents are caused by having a sleepy driver at the wheel. Whether they had a particularly long day or are driving long-distance, the risks remain the same. Driving while drowsy endangers those inside the vehicle as well as those outside of it. With this in mind, the Biomechanics Institute in Valencia, Spain have developed a system called Harken to address driver fatigue and sleepiness.

Harken is basically a smart seatbelt made from “smart” textiles with built-in sensors that can measure a person’s heartbeat and respiration. When it detects that the driver is starting to nod off based on the stats, the system triggers an alarm to jolt the driver awake.

The variations in heart and respiratory rate are good indicators of the state of the driver as they are related to fatigue. So, when people go into a state of fatigue or drowsiness, modifications appear in their breathing and heart rate; Harken can monitor those variables and therefore warn the driver before the onset of symptoms of fatigue.

Harken definitely sounds like something we need. What do you think?

Charger On The Seat

Car chargers are so yesterday! How about a charger (USB Slot) integrated into your seatbelt? The idea is restricted to public transportation like busses, but I see so much value in the idea. Intuitively, most of us hang on to our phones and devices. At the most stuff it in our pockets or keep it on our laps. OMG, this is such a brilliant idea, please make it!

Escape Belt Automatically Unlocks Your Seatbelts If Your Car Goes Underwater

When I was growing up, an elderly man had a heart attack at a golf course not far from my house while driving. His car drove into one of the ponds on the property and was submerged for several days before anyone knew he was missing. Ever since then I’ve always wondered what exactly I would do if my car somehow ended up underwater.

One of the same companies that makes technology for self-inflating life vests used on airlines is showing off a new seatbelt system called the Escape Belt. The system has a small salt capsule that dissolves when submerged in water allowing the seatbelt buckle to pop open automatically.

If you’re wondering, its manufacturer, Fijen claims that the self-opening cartridge is robust enough to not open if you spill a drink on the seatbelt buckle. However, the cartridge used to open the belt does have to be replaced every few years. The buckles cost a little under $40 each and the manufacturer says it is looking for supplier partnerships in the automobile industry right now.
