Two-wheeled autonomous robots are designed to keep your premises secure

Having a human patrol the premises that you want to protect is probably the most common security protocol. However, it is still not fool proof and is prone to error and may cost you a lot if you pay an agency or the security personnel directly. Installing security cameras is also another option but can also be expensive. So if you’re going to spend a lot, why not spend it on a robot?

Designer: Ascento

A Zurich-based company has come up with the Ascento Guard, a robot that can patrol your premises autonomously but with more features than your surveillance system. It is a two-wheeled guard that is able to spot intruders, check on doors and windows, monitor the premises, and record property lights. Once it detects an unusual incident, it sends an alarm so a human can go to the area and do what needs to be done. So yes, human intervention is still needed.

The robot comes with thermal and infrared cameras to record and detect incidents, speakers, a microphone, and GPS tracking. It can run at speeds of up to 5 km/hour if fully charged. It has two large wheels and a robot-looking body that seems to have eyes that can stare into your soul. It is equipped with a fall recovery feature so that it can easily move around all kinds of areas and terrains. It can also weather any kind of, well, weather as it is water proof.

As mentioned earlier, there is still a human element needed in case of an incident. So don’t worry that robots like these will eventually replace actual guards. But it is an alternative or a supplement to your security system if needed. I’m still scared that things like these will eventually become our overlords but hopefully companies like these have thought of ways to make sure that the robot uprising will not happen anytime soon.

Safe Tag makes smartphones buying experience in stores convenient without sacrificing security

With the Safe Tag in use, you can walk into a smartphone retail store, pick up a phone of your choice and roam around the store testing it before buying without a store representative stalking you as if you were a thief.

There are a range of strategies and devices used by mobile phone retail stores to address the problem of shoplifting. One of the most prominently used is merchandising security that allows customers to pick and test a new smartphone while keeping it tethered to the display furniture. Some wireless mobile security systems, like the Safe Tag in use at the T-Factory retail store in Mapo-gu, Seoul in South Korea, have presented a workaround for this ugly user experience of anti-theft cables locking devices to the stand.

The Safe Tag for one allows customers to get rid of the shackles of cables holding the smartphones back – limiting the user experience – and allows them to freely pick up and tinker with the phone. The Tag, however, ensures the smartphone in the consumer’s hand is always protected by the wireless cradle that delivers a security alarm and sends location data directly to the store manager. It lets the staff remain assured that the phone will not be stolen and the resulting consumer experience is as smooth as silk.

This wireless security device for displaying mobile phones in stores is fashioned in two parts, the tag and the cradle. While the two, finished in a matte white hue, are designed to work in tandem, they can also pull off the job independently in case the tag is detached from the cradle. Using the Smart Tag is simple, the retailer can connect the tag to the smartphone’s charging pin and dock the tag into its cradle. The charging pin connected to the phone features a sliding hinge to ensure it can rock back and forth to accommodate smartphones of any thickness.

Once installed and placed on the display furniture, the Safe Tag is functional. It transmits a docked phone’s specifics to the linked e-ink display for user convenience and instantly rings a security alarm when a customer detaches the phone or the tag from the cradle. The alarm is accompanied by the location data, both of which are sent directly to the store manager who can then know the whereabouts of the phone. Interestingly, the alarm is also sounded if the phone travels – with the tag – beyond the specified distance from the cradle that features a built-in battery to run wirelessly, if required.

The Safe Tag is useful and effective as an anti-theft mechanism in retail stores for high-value devices like phones and deserves to travel beyond the bounds of South Korea. Though we are hopeful it will happen soon, there is no official word from the makers on this yet.

Security, charging and music in one!

The S-Cradle is a perplexing design that transforms your phone into a reliable security system for 24/7 monitoring. It serves as both a watchdog, charger and Bluetooth speaker for streaming your favorite tunes. The unit itself doesn’t appear to have an integrated camera, so it’s not immediately clear whether or not your phone has to be cradled to monitor with video. Then again, wouldn’t you need your smartphone in-hand to actually monitor what’s going on remotely? While that issue seems to need a bit of tweaking, it’s also equipped with smoke sensors and a motion detector so you can stay alert even without video!

Roambotics Jr. Rrobotic Security Guard Patrols Your Home Autonomously

Roambotics-Jr-robot-security-guard

If you’re fed-up with security systems that remain static in a predictable position, here is a robotic security device that comes with built-in camera and audio sensors and connects with home network or pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device. Developed by Roambotics, this is robot Jr. – a wheeling robot that can patrol your home or office. It also features an embedded machine learning software, to better understand its environment over a period of time.

The autonomous, wheel-shaped robot Jr., gets 360-degree vision. It rolls around constantly scanning the allotted area to make sure all is well. All data collected by the robot is streamed to the cloud and Roambotics network wirelessly. If it senses something fishy, the robotic security guard will inform you via an app or an email.

Thanks to the machine learning software, Jr. can understand the surroundings over time, and develop a map so it can avoid furniture and obstacles (so, you don’t have to use a remote control to steer it around). Featuring cliff detection, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NVIDIA tegra 4 microcontroller, the self-stabilizing robot has a base station with inductive charging. There’s no word on price or availability, beyond “sometime in 2016″.
