Smart shelving system provides versatile storage and partitions in modern offices

One problem that never seems to leave us, especially if you live in a major city – is the lack of space! If you’re an independent millennial who recently moved out of their family home and into their own, then a significant issue you may be dealing with almost every day…is space constraints in your home. And this problem also tends to follow us to our offices – whether commercial or home. Commercial offices are teeming to the brim with hordes of employees, and the furniture they need – desks, chairs, office pods, conference tables, etc. And smart storage solutions for offices are often harder to come by, as compared to those for our homes. One such well-designed storage solution for commercial offices is the Combus Shelving System by Narbutas.

Designer: Narbutas

Designed by office furniture brand Narbutas, the Combus Shelving System is a super smart furniture design that not only provides versatile storage but also offers a way to partition spaces in the office. The Combus system is a pretty crafty one – it features a range of varied shelving types and heights, that can be customized in different finishes, and integrated with accessories such as planter boxes, metal bookends, and felt storage baskets to give each piece a unique and individual look.

The Combus system is available in the traditional “I” shape for shelving, but also in innovative configurations such as “L” and “T” shapes. This makes dividing the office space quite fun and interesting, irrespective if you’re creating private work areas, lounges, or meeting spots for collaborations. The closed shelving options which are higher can be used to provide privacy around areas where employees work and have meetings, while the shorter shelves can be used to partition spaces without completely segregating employees, and their opportunities to converse and connect.

The Combus system is also excellent for meetings since you can attach screens for presentations to its structure, using a metal duct that hides the cable away to provide a clean, decluttered, and wire-free look. Combus was created using recycled materials and can be easily and efficiently disassembled for reuse and adaptation, as and when needed.

This sustainable shelf requires no screws or tools to assemble

Looks can be deceiving, they say, and what might be simple could actually be complicated in reality. A simple desk, for example, might be minimalist on the outside but is hiding complex mechanisms in its drawers. Then again, the most successful and effective simple designs are actually born from sophisticated thinking and, at times, nontrivial concepts and theories. This wooden shelf, for example, is so simple through and through to the point that you might even wonder how it is able to hold its parts together. Fortunately, it does work as advertised, creating a flat-packed piece of furniture that is sustainable at every point, from its creation to its transportation and even to its assembly.

Designer: Carlos Platz

The market is filled with minimalist wooden shelves that can be shipped in a flat-pack and assembled at home. After all, IKEA has become a household name, almost literally, and is overflowing with such pieces of furniture. Unless they are formed from a single piece of material, most furniture is held together using screws, glues, or even pieces of plastic. This creates complexity that is hidden behind simple facades, a complexity that sometimes eats away at the planet little by little as well.

Inspired by the simplicity of alpine joinery and architecture, this wooden shelf throws out all those conventions to arrive at a connection system that is genius in its simplicity. There are no extra parts or materials that join the shelves and the legs together other than the shelves and legs themselves. There isn’t even any kind of adhesive to give you confidence that the shelf won’t just fall apart once you put something heavy. Instead, the shelf relies on shapes and physical to keep everything in its proper place.

Named after the Italian word for “rotation,” Svolta shelving uses pieces of wood that have special cutouts that fit into each other tightly. The shelves have circular cutouts where the legs are supposed to go. The legs, however, aren’t perfectly round but are like wooden rods split in half. The idea is that you insert the legs into the shelves sideways and then rotate them so that the groves match the shelves. With this design, a three-layer shelf with six legs can supposedly be assembled by a single person in just two minutes.

Keeping the design simple has other benefits that go beyond ease of assembly. The furniture can be packed more tightly to reduce packaging waste, and they can be transported easily and more efficiently, further reducing carbon emissions from transporting products. The shelf can also be made from sustainable materials and processes, and Svolta itself is made from European oak and finished with eco-friendly colorless hard oil. Even better, it’s a system that can scale to other types and sizes of shelves, creating a new shelving system that is so simple yet elegant that it feels almost like magic.

A Puzzling Statement Piece

rubika_bookcase_01

On one hand, this design totally stresses me out with flashbacks to a game I NEVER came close to mastering! On the other, there’s no denying the charm of its familiar aesthetic. Inspired by everyone’s favorite 1980s toy, the Rubika bookcase is at once a modern statement piece and a nod to the past.

From afar, it looks like a three-dimensional cube. Take a closer look, however, and you’ll notice that it’s the same width as a traditional bookcase. This mesmerizing visual is created by a thoughtful shift of its cubbies’ shapes in combination with a blend of mixed woods. The result is at once playful and perplexing!

Minimal Design, Maximum Flexibility

lifestyle_01

If you are noncommittal when it comes to displaying artwork or other objects, the Singular wall console shelf lets you change out the framed pieces or objects without nailing all those holes in the wall. Little souvenirs and small framed photos that clutter a tabletop can become a pleasing display when arranged as a collection. Applying a “more using less” philosophy in the design process, a single piece of wood is carefully separated into independent components. No piece discarded, the only lost material is sawdust. The design’s hidden hardware creates a clean, sophisticated look. Users can use one or multiple shelves — mounted horizontally, vertically or staggered — to create a big impact in a room.
