Multifunctional clock moonlights as a security camera when no one is home

Space is a very precious commodity these days, whether it’s a floor, a desk, or any other surface you can place things. We sometimes have to be smarter about the products we buy, often picking things that can serve more than one purpose while occupying the same space. Some things, however, best serve a single purpose only, though that purpose sometimes loses meaning depending on the day. A clock, for example, should only tell the time, but that function becomes meaningless when no one is around to see it anyway. This concept design thus gives the humble desk clock another function when it’s not in use, merging it with another product that ironically loses its purpose when people are actually home.

Designer: Jungmin Park

There are some products that wouldn’t cross paths under normal circumstances, especially when they have seemingly opposite use cases. A clock, for example, is only meaningful when there are people around to actually look at it. In contrast, a home security camera is most useful when there’s no one around. swap is a design concept that tries to smash these two opposite home products together, creating an object that not only saves space but also changes with the owner’s lifestyle in an almost playful manner.

swap almost looks like a toy at first glance, especially with its pastel colors. It even feels like a toy with the way the circular head flips over like a coin, depending on its mode. One side shows a minimalist analog clock face with no second hand or numbers along the ticks. The other side is a nondescript camera that might be similar to common webcams.

The most interesting part of the concept, however, is how smart swap is, or at least tries to be. It can automatically switch between those two modes, showing the clock when you’re at home and switching to a security camera when you’re out. It mostly does so by detecting the location of your phone on the presumption that if it’s out of the house, you’re most likely out as well. Of course, you can also manually switch between modes or lock the device to a specific mode. There will be an audible notification whenever you switch modes, so you won’t be caught off-guard. There’s also an extra feature where you can display a countdown timer to the next schedule on your phone’s calendar app. This timer is displayed on an LED dot matrix on swap’s body.

You might not be entirely convinced of the need for combining clock and camera functions, but swap, fortunately, serves another, though indirect, purpose. Given its aesthetic, it can also be a cute decor for your desk or shelf, so you aren’t exactly losing space if you place this multifunctional product somewhere in your home.

This Apple-inspired conceptual camera is the bridge between DSLR cameras and smartphones

Ever wanted more than a phone camera but less than an advanced camera? This conceptual Apple-esque iCamera perfectly fits that gap! DSLR cameras can be daunting if you are just starting out but if you want to learn beyond the simple point-and-shoot then this camera is the perfect stepping stone into your visual art journey.

Get those professional shots without having to study the manual and watch several YouTube videos, the iCamera aims at breaking down the complexity of advance cameras to make people comfortable with the idea of shooting with a gadget that is not their phone. “It increases your ability and easily leads you to the world of cameras,” says the designer about the gap he wants to bridge with this concept design. The designer wanted to simplify the existing advanced cameras’ user experience by making the body more compact and lighter. The bulk of the lens is reduced but it still includes the revolving functionality to zoom. However, now you can do it comfortably with just a finger. It also aims to make transferring your files easier through cloud-based technologies – that one tedious task every photographer hates to do but has to do. So say goodbye to HD cards, setting up Bluetooth, and keeping a track of multiple accessories that one usually needs to transfer. It charges wirelessly and has a handy flash that attaches magnetically to the body!

The idea revolves around letting you control everything with one hand. The ergonomic form and intuitive design make the process of creativity flow smoothly. The iCamera was envisioned with the latest technology like triple lenses (wide + normal + zoom) and highly calibrated sensors so you don’t have to rely on carrying additional lenses. It also features WiFi connectivity and eSim so you can share your memories from wherever you are. I love the idea of the iCamera, it is the perfect gateway into advanced photography and the right solution for businesses that have creative requirements which can be met without buying unnecessary equipment. This camera is basically Goldilock’s perfect mid-range choice!

This Camera Looks Away When You Get Home

Crowdfunded back in 2015, Angee, the smart camera for your home, was tackling issues we didn’t know we had already – privacy. With the ability to rotate a full 360 degrees, Angee faces away when it realizes that you’re home. This is a fantastic solution to the paranoia of constantly being watched. Even unplugging a smart camera at home isn’t enough – the lens just glaring away, staring at you…no thanks.

As many would agree, Angee doesn’t exactly do much more than other home security cameras outside of that. But honestly, it’s a much bigger issue being addressed and the fact it was addressed in 2015 means that the folks behind Angee are moving in the right direction. Angee does require an additional device be attached to the front door to determine when it should be actively recording. Probably not the most practical alert system considering Nest and various other home cameras will detect movement automatically. However, that being said, that’s a small price to pay for the luxury of privacy.

A Camera that’s Out of this World

The 1-Ring Moon Levitating Smart Camera is like something out of this world – something like a moon perhaps? This smart camera defies the law of gravity by suspending in mid-air above its base. The Moon floats above the base in a graceful manner, with the ability to capture a rounded 360 degrees of imagery.

The Moon is integrated with an accompanying app – yet is jam-packed with nifty technology and clever features. The Moon can instantly detect any movement in the room and rotate itself to catch the action! Not only this – the accompanying app also alerts you to the action, allowing the user to watch the action live through their smartphone. The Moon comes with a built-in microphone to add a pair of ears to those eyes, helping you when your baby cries or your dog barks. Due to the levitating nature of the Moon, the device can be removed from the base and place in any environment around the house with the use of a cradle – giving the user the ability to adapt the Moon for any room in the house.

What makes the Moon a cut above the rest, is its voice recognition. This helps the Moon recognize who comes home and when they come home. The Moon Levitating Smart Camera is indeed smart – using an integrated IR blaster and Bluetooth, you can also use the Moon to control your other smart devices throughout the house all from inside the app, making it one truly smart device.

Logitech Circle Is Smart Home Monitoring Done Right

Logitech Circle Home Monitoring Camera 00

Home monitoring has become very accessible in the recent past, and since more and more manufacturers include connected cameras in their smart home kits, keeping an eye on your valuables while away is very convenient, not to mention affordable. Logitech’s Circle is a smart camera that keeps an eye on your home when you’re not around.

The second product to be launched under the Swiss hardware manufacturer’s Logi brand (did they just drop ‘tech’ from the name?), Circle is a security camera that, once turned on, connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. It is accompanied by cloud storage for up to 24 hours of recordings, so everything should be OK, assuming that you check the companion app at least once a day. Once it’s connected to your smartphone and you have the companion app installed, you can set up the connection between Logi Circle and the local Wi-Fi network. You can even take the camera with you, but its built-in battery only keeps it running for three hours, or up to 12 hours, in power save mode.

“There’s a new movement in home monitoring,” explained Vincent Borel, director of new ventures at Logitech. “The nature of today’s connected world is changing the way people interact with cameras in the home. Video surveillance is no longer just about security, it’s about staying connected with our homes and loved ones.”

That’s exactly the idea Logitech wants to convey, even in the promotional pictures for this product. We see kids playing around, doing potentially dangerous activities, and the Logi Circle taking the place of the babysitter. Maybe you shouldn’t take the babysitter off the payroll just yet, unless you spend the whole time away from home with the phone in your hand.

Just in case the kids seem to be doing something that could harm them, you can take advantage of the camera’s 2-way audio. Talk to them and listen to what they have to say. This is not really an innovative feature, as it has been done before, including by Xiaomi in it’s Yi Camera. The video will be streamed real-time in HD, while the wide-angle viewing and the 8x zoom will help a lot at seeing the details. At the end of the day, the companion app allows you to see a 30-second clip of the previous 24 hours.

Logi Circle doesn’t feature motion tracking per se, but it does use a video analysis algorithm that can tell when there is significant motion. In other words, if the camera is pointing to your window and there are leaves falling, Circle won’t think much of it.

The Logi Circle app is available for both Android and iOS, and even though there aren’t that many reviews for it, yet, people seem to be happy with its functionality.

Unfortunately, Logi Circle isn’t yet available worldwide and it may take a bit till it finds its way to retailers. For the time being, it can only be purchased from the Logitech website in the U.S. and selected European countries.
