This smartphone accessory scans your skin for underlying problems, the hassle-free way

Always worried about your skin’s health? Then this camera-like attachment is exactly what you want.

Skin is the first line of defense that the complex body mechanism has developed to keep all the billions and trillions of external elements from reaching the internal organs. As civilizations progressed forward this largest and most important organ of the body became the most sought after in terms of care. Take the skincare industry for example which is one of the biggest out there and so much money is poured into it for mere looks. In fact, the skincare segment amounted to $18,702 million in 2021, and it is following a growth pattern of 5.01 percent annually.

After all who doesn’t want some me-time, especially with their skincare. Seeing the importance of skincare in daily routine, Borderless Design Consultancy (BDCI) has an interesting take on smartphone accessories that go beyond contemporary use. We’ve seen high-end smartphone camera attachments, medical-related accessories, and other weird gadgets, but this one is actually interesting. Dubbed At Skin, it scans the skin for any signs of skin diseases or cancer DNA for early detection of serious problems. On the skincare front, the gadget scans the skin for tissues and overall healthy signs.

You can attach this cool gadget to your smartphone, placing it just over the primary sensor and the accessory’s hardware does the rest. The device works like a dermascope to detect any skin lesions or melanoma cells at a very early stage so that you can take the precautionary measures ASAP. Since At Skin can be attached to any smartphone’s camera module, hassle-free skincare is actually possible the right way with BDCI’s attachment. The product is still in the prototyping stage and we hope to see it hit the market soon in the future.

Portable Telescope Adds 80X Optical Zoom to Your iPhone 6

Super Spy Ultra High Power Zoom Telescope with Tripod 01

Ever wanted to get into astrophotography, but couldn’t find the perfect smartphone camera for that? Well, that’s maybe because smartphones aren’t really made for that, at least not without an add-on such as this portable telescope.

In the past few years, smartphone cameras have seen a lot of accessories for macro photography and fish-eye lens effects, but no one has ever considered making a telescope that attaches to iPhones for on-the-go telephoto shots. Brando’s Super Spy telescope lens is an iPhone 6 camera accessory that’ll help people take photos at up to 80x optical zoom.

As its name suggests, this lens is not meant entirely for astrophotography, but rather for spying on neighbors, military bases and such. In case it wasn’t obvious enough, the Super Spy telescope lens works out of the box and is a plug-and-play (of sorts) device, being ready to use right after installation.

The Super Spy telescope lens measures 395mm in length when extended, and 88mm in diameter, at its thickest point, but the manufacturer doesn’t disclose the weight of this camera accessory. It can be used without a stand, but I imagine that it is quite hefty and doing so would make your hands tire after a while, so employing the included tripod might be better.

The kit also includes a black case for the iPhone that enables 360-degree shifting, and a velvet pocket, to make sure that the lens is protected from dust. Not sure how it would withstand physical damage, as a velvet pocket couldn’t possibly protect it against that.

All in all, the telescope lens could prove useful for animal observation and traveling, but I can’t possibly imagine anyone using something like this at a concert. The manufacturer, on the other hand, lists this as one of the possible applications of the telescope lens.

This particular model is compatible with the iPhone 6 exclusively, but Brando also makes other models that play nicely with Samsung’s Galaxy line. The telescope lens is available on the Brando’s website for $220, which is quite a steep price for a camera accessory. The manufacturer seems to have taken advantage from this point of view, as the Super Spy telescope lens currently has no competition.

HTC Re Is a Periscope-Like Smartphone-Compatible Handheld Camera

HTC Re Camera 02

It looks like HTC is testing new waters with its handheld Re camera, a device that was quite a surprise for the entire world, given this Taiwanese company’s history.

HTC Re is a standalone camera that’s compatible with both iOS and Android smartphones, so no one can accuse the manufacturer of discriminating anyone. The premise for making this camera is that smartphones are not always as convenient as standalone handheld cameras, and a prime example of that includes underwater photography.

This camera is waterproof, so it can be used while swimming or even when scuba-diving, should you be in the mood for taking pictures then. Having a lot of things in common both with GoPro cameras and with smartphone cameras, HTC Re proves to be a worthy companion when it comes to taking spontaneous pictures (just take care who you’re photographing). Judging by the promotional pictures that were used for the launch of this camera, the HTC Re could become the next best camera for selfies.

One of the most interesting features of HTC Re is that it doesn’t have a power button. Its integrated accelerometer is used for turning on the camera as soon as you pick it up. The 16 MP Sony CMOS sensor can capture 1080p video at 30 fps and slo-mo 720p at 120 fps. According to HTC, Re’s 820mAh battery should last for 1 hour and 40 minutes of video recording in full HD, or just about 1,200 still images. In case you’re not satisfied with the 8GB microSD card the camera comes with, you’re free to get a 128GB card, assuming you are willing to pay that much to extend the capacity.

There are a few problems with the HTC Re camera, though. First of all, this device must have one of the most uninspired names in the history of cameras, and of gadgets, in general. Secondly, it’s small (which sometimes is a good thing, but…) and therefore quite easy to misplace or lose. Not at last, HTC Re costs a whooping $200, which is a bit of a steep price, especially for a product of its kind. My advice is to get a compact camera for that money, as its sensor would produce much better pictures than the HTC Re ever could.

LazeeEye Makes 3D Cameras Out of Regular Smartphones

LazeeEye Prototype

3D camera smartphones haven’t had much success in the past, but maybe a gadget that turns regular smartphones into 3D cameras will be better received by people.

According to Heuristic Labs, the manufacturer of this gadget, LazeeEye is a portmanteau for laser and eye, no matter how much it sounds like a visual disorder. I’d like to think that the company could have picked a better name that doesn’t make people think of health problems. Regardless, it’s the purpose that LazeeEye serves more than its name that interests us. The gadget attaches to 3.5mm jack of iPhones or Android smartphones and with the help of a laser source, a mirror and a spatial modulating element, the phone is able to use a depth estimation algorithm in order to make stereo images.

To achieve this, the add-on module also comes with a stereo vision app that puts the computing hardware of the smartphone to use in order to create 3D images. Heuristic Labs compared its pencil-sized gadget to the likes of Microsoft Kinect and Google Project Tango, probably hoping that the world won’t realize that all of these devices serve different purposes, despite relying on 3D imaging. Project Tango smartphones and tablets, for example, will be used for indoor mapping, something that could make the life of visually impaired people a lot easier. Try doing that with 3D pictures!

The wiggle GIF effect that LazeeEye uses can indeed create the sensation of motion, but at the same time, it could make people sick, provided that they look at such a “3D image” for a bit longer than 2 seconds. The concept is definitely interesting, but I think it should have been advertised in a different manner, and maybe that way it would have been more successful.

Below is a video of the LazeeEye that the company shot just prior to launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Unfortunately, the goal of $250K was not met when the campaign ended this weekend (only $232K were pledged by backers). Given how close they were to getting their project funded, I’m firmly convinced that Heuristic Labs will try again, either on Kickstarter or on some other platform, as this wouldn’t be the first time a company takes a second shot at crowdfunding and being unsuccessful the first time.
