Sony hack might have North Korean perpetrators, says FBI

Sony Hack

The FBI has clarified some of the confusing events surrounding the recent hack at Sony Pictures: North Korean hackers were behind it.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said today that the hack & information leak Sony Pictures suffered was the result of a cyber attack by North Korean hackers. Furthermore, these are not independent individuals, but the FBI claims to have enough information to prove the North Korean government themselves were responsible. This was deduced based on the software used for the attacks, malaware that North Korea was known to have used in the past: exactly the same North Korea used against South Korean media, banks and other organizations.

The hackers behind these attacks go by the moniker of “Guardians of Peace”, and made the last month a living hell for Sony as they released financial documents, upcoming movies, and confidential information (salaries, and so on) about employees, actors, and directors. While initially North Korea claimed to have no responsibility, endorsed the hackers by claiming their actions were “a righteous deed”. The motivation seems to be the now infamous Sony Pictures movie “The Interview”, which was to depict an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The movie is, as of now, canceled and won’t see the light of day in order to prevent future attacks. This, obviously, has outraged the American public and a great number of movie-goers along the world.

Sony Pictures Hack Leaks Possible Super Mario Bros. Movie

You’ve probably heard by now that the computer network at Sony Pictures was recently hacked. A business being hacked certainly isn’t a good thing, but one interesting tidbit that came out of the hack was some leaked details that Sony Pictures is working on a Super Mario Bros. movie.

Apparently, the film would be animated, which is fantastic news for anyone unlucky enough to have watched the early ’90s live action Mario Bros. movie. The film is rumorex to be in the very early stages right now with no voice actors attached.

Just because Sony is talking with whoever owns the films rights, doesn’t mean that a movie will be made. Sometimes studios buy the rights to something jut so no one else can make it. It’s also more than a bit odd to think of Sony making a movie based on a Nintendo property. Do you think this is good news or bad? Most video game movies suck, so I’m not sure what to think.

Sonic the Hedgehog Spinning into Theaters with New Movie

I have played more than a few Sonic the Hedgehog games in my day. Honestly though, I have always though of Sonic as a second-tier game hero next to Mario and some other characters in the earlier days of gaming. Regardless, Sony Pictures feels the character is so popular there is a built-in audience for a movie based on Sonic.

Sony has revealed that it will be making a movie that is a hybrid of live action and CGI that will focus on Sonic and presumably the collection (and occasional spilling) of gold rings. The Sonic game franchise has sold 140 million copies since the blue speedster debuted in 1991.

The Sonic the Hedgehog film will be produced by 22 Jump Street producer Neil Moritz. The film is being written by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser. There is no word at this time of when the movie might hit theaters. I don’t really see this working out well for Sega and Sony Pictures. What do you think?
